I have 2 w6v2d4 from 2002 . I replaced the surround on both and they sound just as awesome as the day I purchased them. In my opinion the w6v2 was the best SOUNDING sub of all time.

Hello from Birmingham. I attempted my 1st speaker rebuilt last year, a 12w7. I am just now testing it via a. 40hz tone off RUclips using maybe 50w. I hear a slight buzzing sound. However if I press ever-so-slightly down on the spiders first outer roll, it stops buzzing. I'm a oldie in the 12v biz, but a newbie to your channel here on RUclips and must be honest with ya, i didn't use not 1 clamp when I glued the spider to the basket. I replaced the pinched coil ( magnet shift from plate ), spider, foam surround & opted for a stick on JL logo for the lost original one. Any immediate thoughts? Thanks in advance ~~
Just sounds like it's slightly mis-aligned. I'd recommend a total recone or just a top assembly replacement since the parts aren't available.
Hey, I was driving with normal volume settings and the sub literally just went loud by itself and then stopped working. Any idea as to what's going on? Legit started ringing in my left ear whilst the speakers stayed the same volume

To fix the shift is $65 plus $25 return shipping. That's just the motor. You'd have to cut the spider though too get the assembly out and then remove the frame's bolts.

Salvage / harvest that coil and cap for one. Then decide if you want to keep it a 10 or change it to a 12 or 15"

Nada. That's a myth. It's just a horsepower thing. JL is a ricer and Sundown would be American Heavy Metal. They can both have 500Hp, so they'll both fight gravity the same way, same performance.

How come after the refoam on the w7 , the silver ring is very hard to push down on the new foam ? That’ll cause the aluminum clamp ring to be hard to put on . It’s obvious that the new foam will be a little thicker because it’s new . Therefore I will have to find another way of getting this ring to slide all the way down . Have you run across this issue ?
I use a pair of lineman pliers to massage the ring into place. Then you start with one end of the aluminum clamp and work your way around with a mallet

Are you able to repair a JL10w6v3. Speaker looks great, suddenly stopped working as I was driving but no smell or anything just stopped after going over a bump. I looked at the speaker and looks 10/10 but terminals show no reading with multi reader. I’m from Vegas and saw this video

I guess I got lucky and found why my coil shorted with no damage to the naked eye on the physical appearance of the woofer. And learning that JL will take in my repair with a new warranty. I had it for 3 years, and I forgot how expensive just the speaker was. I will subscribe and support your channel!! Just because you’re a great channel!!!
The JL box has slid when I hit a bump. The woofer was facing the trunk liner just enough were when I was pushing it with the bass. And made the whole sub get out alignment. We found a 3 tiny marks on the bottom rubber. For anyone else here’s a tip Velcro your box or hard mount it so it doesn’t happen to you!!!

I would have loved to hear his A B comparison sound review going from a sealed W7 to a ported custom sub. Yes the sound should be different but the amount of extra output going ported should be drastic
Well, you'd have to add EQ to the sealed box for it to replicate what the ported box will be. It also depends on what frequency you tune the box at. You can tune it high for more SPL but since SQ is subjective, it's very tough to compare. Both are fine depending on your application. If you can do ported, do ported. If you don't have room or don't want a port... like in a marine application, then just go sealed and use the EQ or DSP to get the sound you want.
That box Doug made for the W7 in the f150 was a beast. And me being a fan of your channel since you came to me i still havent found a something I can work on. Im an I.t guy so I build computers so of course I would like to recone a sub but just still havent found one

Hey you say you would suggest having a sub with twice the power of your amp because it's never gunna stress the subwoofer.
But would it not be easy to stress your Amp? I got rp1500.1 and SVR15 on 2ohm and my Amp gets very hot. IMO these skar amps have poor heat dissipating abilities
Create an environment that's more comfortable for the amp

The problem is common with my friends too who have Amps in better places.
And my door speaker Amp that is in floor right under my AC vent to keep it cool cuz it gets super hot.
My question really is, are amps not as easily stressed out as subs?
Should a good Amp be able to run at max power and settings for long periods without getting super hot and needing a break?
the only reason my sub Amp gets hot is cuz poor placement and ventilation.
But my door speaker amp, should it be getting hot running max power; or is this a sign that I've got it wired wrong (too low ohm)

I get voltage drops at high volume according to my volt meter I hooked to my car battery. Been saving up for a HO alt... soo expensive tho.. only one I can find for my car is GP and it's 6hundred sumthin dollars

That's because they're not worth recone. Just buy new ones, better ones for $100 each.

ive got 2 of the p2's in a bassworx sealed box from back in the day on my gm 7200m. pushing 360w rms in 2ohm to both my subs that can do 400w rms together. tuned for 40-55hz

I did not shim it. I’ve had the sub for over 9 years. I watched a few videos on the re-foam diy. How can I shim it without taking it all apart?

@@donmige81 It is and the sub can become mis-aligned. But JL cheats by using a former that doesn't clink around in the gap just in case it is mis-aligned.

@@woofwoof3934 The right way to do it is to disassemble the subwoofer, prep and re-attach the top plate and then recone / repair the driver.

Sound quality is about accuracy and presentation. Dont think sq woofers won't do spl. If you know what your doing you can make anything loud. I have r12s on a Memphis 600w monoblick. Transient hit over 1k easy at 35hz. My sq setup is louder than some entry level spl systems. I easy do over 130db from 30 to 20k. Yes I have an rta with a calibrated mic. Good sq subs will be really loud. But there not designed for spl abuse usually.

For the price of this thing (almost $2000 new), and its 'incredible' surround technology, the fact that the most common problem is the surround failing is a big disappointment and the main reason I would never get this subwoofer even though it looks like the dream subwoofer. And yes, surrounds do fail on subwoofers, but this one particular subwoofer and it's unique surround failing a lot can't be a coincidence.
You definitely are looking out for the people who can't but will try to feed there musical basshead beasT..

I think folks get confused with the price tag of that woofer being now a 1400 woofer = sound quality but the skar evl 12 to me has way better sq and has held up longer on the slash v1 1000 than the w7 by far if anything to me its an spl woofer and,paf, peaky as fu$k

You’re more likely to damage your speaker by underpowering it than over powering it. Unless absurdly overpowering it and playing it like an idiot of course. But extra wattage = extra headroom. When you underpowered a speaker, you introduce clipping. Clipping = damage.
Not true. It's ALWAYS over powering it that kills it.
Name a sub that has better sound quality than the w7. I've had the 12 and 13.5 and they both sound great.
