And regarding your past remark on reluctance of commenting on the radar features because OPFOR is watching, you can comment on any of the game-implemented radar features, just not your actual experience or actual documentation. There were several cases when tank crew members were posting closed documentation on the game forums (ironically, a Russian game forums) to prove their point in an internet catfight, and these people got in trouble. But there's nothing wrong in discussing how _game_ radar works.
Almost every military pilot that has tried DCS said, the air feels a little thick and you lose energy too fast. Did you ever get your rudder pedals working?
That’s really nice seeing a real F16 pilot trying DCS, and like it. But, sorry, a need to make you a question… what kind of head tracking are you using??? It looks really smooth, and comfortable. Many thanks for this video. Great hug!
Based on the way he is moving I'm guessing its Tobii 5, at least something similar. It's what I use so the responsiveness and everything looks similar to mine. People give it mixed reviews, especially for DCS but I like it. Especially since I don't need to wear anything on my head for it. I will say thought that I use FaceTrackNoIR to tune it instead of the native software.
Oh snap. I actually thought Falcon BMS might have been the simulator being evaluated here due to the title. There may be some snarky comments incoming. I am a DCS player myself. But warning for ya Ryan, while Falcon BMS might have more advanced avionics replication for the F-16, it is not user friendly software to set up. Unless you’re a solid PC user guy, it will take some solid effort to get where you want with it.
I'm not sure if the "BMS user friendliness or lack of" part is valid anymore. It still has it's quirks, but once the Alternative Launcher became official BMS launcher it shouldn't be much more difficult to set it up than DCS. In fact it might be even easier, because contrary to DCS bare minimum approach, AL provides some sane defaults for most common flight sticks out there.
@@6XENO9 gonna call BS on this claim. I've tried to fly BMS substantially since 4.32 (+4 or so versions) attempting to use the alternative launcher when available, and use the other various new tooling to set it up and it still remains something that's never come close to fully working for me. The best I've gotten was the utter basic flight controls, and questionable if the throttle-idle-AB behavior was acceptably mapped. I see that the tool is supposed to be able to do it in some easy way, but it never quite works and behaves I need it to. I've read the READMEs. Controls are not saving most of the time, and they never are close to sane defaults for my very popular flight sim hardware (CM3, WW-F16 EX, CougarMFDs). For reference, "almost there" is nowhere if you have a full HOTAS + pedals. At the end of the day, you have to scan through just about every thing ensuring certain other devices are not bound to something silly. I'm a software engineer with hobbies in video and photo editing, so complex software is not a thing for me. BMS tooling is a mess and a joke compared to DCS. I shouldn't have to damn near know exactly how BMS is coded to set it up and use it sanely.
Can you do a dog fight? Or would that make you use like classified stratagies? Do you have to censor yourself? Watching you play this is awesome. I always wonder the differences from reality.
You sir, earned a sub. Thank you very much for this vid, and also sharing some insight about formation flying. I always struggled with it in DCS, but i will try your advice. I love the Viper and Eagle.
Another f-16 sim game to look at is BMS. It is a 20+ year passion project mod for the old school game falcon 4.0. It's often on sale for $3.49 ($6 full price so not bad at all regardless). The f-16 is fully modeled/detailed and has multiple fully realized blocks of f-16s. The one downfall is the graphics aren't as good- BUT! This year they aim to release a huge patch that updates all materials and graphics along with a fully realized/detailed f-15C (for free). Worth a look!
Since they added VR to BMS, I haven't touched DCS. The dynamic campaign is still incredible 20+ years later. It's also more in-depth in many areas (like it has a functional ATC, unlike DCS).
@@theoldweaponstroop7441 I'm just starting to get into it. My buddy and I were laughing that it cost us $3.49 lmao I am really looking forward to their progress this year. Might be a serious shift in the war sim world. The people involved deserve it.
If you want to make your f-16 act like it should in your hotas response go to your axis control settings and with roll and pitch slightly work in negative curvature like start with -10 roll -5 pitch rudder is preference i personally dont have pedals but run a negative -3 on my rudders
Hey Max, you should look at your headtracking software and set the sensitivity a bit higher. It looks like you are using the default settings which mean you move your head a lot, and the camera in the game only moves a bit.
Oh Man!!! I'm so glad you gave props to John Boyd! I'm actually developing a TV Series and/or Feature based on the book by Robert Coram, BOYD: THE FIGHTER PILOT WHO CHANGED the ART OF WAR, to which I acquired the rights to. I'm calling it FIGHTER MAFIA. I already wrote the pilot episode and currently pitching to the studios. The feature adaptation is a little more challenging, as his story is so epic. It's hard to compact all of his significant accomplishments. But it can be done. Thanks so much for all of your amazing insight. F-16 is one of my favs.
Yeah... might wanna check the other side of the story on John Boyd before spending too much on production based only on that book. LazerPig's analysis is perhaps a good start. I'm certainly no expert but what I do know is that he was at best a controversial figure.
@@grievesy83 Yes - I've done exhaustive research on Boyd from different perspectives. The book by Coram is only a starting point and serves to add value to the project from an IP perspective.
@@marcosantiago6818 I find it surprising that a person who has conducted extensive research into Boyd talks about him or the Fighter Mafia in positive terms. Pierre Sprey in particular was nothing short of a fraud, claiming to have designed the A-10 (amongst other aircraft) when in fact he had absolutely nothing to do with it. Boyd claimed to have designed the F-15, when in actual fact he proposed a ‘red bird’ alternative to the ‘blue bird’ program where absolutely none of his design changes were adopted. The F-15 then became the most successful air-to-air platform in NATO. And the OODA loop is over complicated garbage. The Reformers were self-aggrandising crackpots who’s ideas were stupid and virtually never implemented on any aircraft. Near as I can find (admittedly without doing much research and heavily relying on others who hopefully have), the only references to Boyd or Sprey or any of that lot having ‘designed’ a fighter aircraft are Coram’s book, which was essentially a PR piece by and for the Reformers. There are no references to back their ‘design’ claims outside of their close circle of mates.
@@grievesy83 Boyd was a very controversial figure. Yes - he has as many detractors as he has supporters. Name one biographical character in life and in cinema who does not inspire debate on the facts, merits, or character, and I'll show you a three-dollar bill. I think you may have missed the point and presume to know the story I'm telling. Even the materials that I've collected from Air Force archives, as well as Boyd's efficiency reports that are part of the dozen or so boxes of research at Quantico, are not all in alignment. I'm telling a story based on interviews with certain principals, and authors who wrote about him and his work, including Coram himself,, as well as my own research in aviation history - from WWII through Vietnam and beyond, in order to place his story in context. So although I respect your option, you presume to know the story I'm telling without even knowing my point of view or the types of creative license that I'll be taking as part of the telling. It's a little more complicated than what you presume. And that's what makes a compelling story.
@@marcosantiago6818 Albert Einstein comes to mind. I did presume to know the story you would tell but, to be fair, that’s only because you described it yourself: “… props to John Boyd”, “his significant achievements” and acquiring the rights to Coram’s one-sided puff piece on which your production will be “based” (quotations are your words, not mine). You didn’t describe a production using Coram’s book as one of many reference materials, even if that is what you are ultimately doing. I genuinely hope the principals that you interview are not just Reformer fanbois, but include people who were actually involved in the design and development of the aircraft. Red Bird vs Blue Bird is a case in point. As I said earlier: I’m relying heavily on others here. I don’t know a lot about these guys, but the analyses I have heard are very convincing in their criticisms.
F-16 is probably the next one I’m going to get. Squadron I’m with is carrier based and primarily flies F-18, but there are a few that have been wanting to do the Viper on some off days.
Did they change the flight characteristcs on the f-16 recently? If you get slow like 250-350 it has a lot of trouble gaining energy again even when you unload the jet to 3g's. you basically have to go 1g just to get it to start gaining again which you cant do in a dogfight. Also noticed that when i dogfight in the servers that it can not out rate most things f-18, f-15 even when im 450kts pulling 9g's. I see them pull lead, i jink, they get slow, i keep my rate up but they get there speed back immediately and are able to try to take another shot. It just doesnt seem right. And the dogfight radar lock only locks when i put the cross directly over the target, which sucks.
Thank you for your service. I was in VF 111 sundowners f14 squadron many moons ago as a parachute rigger. I am working on my airshow demonstration in dcs world with the viper. When performing the 8 point roll, I am having problems with the nose sinking down in the middle of it (especially in the 4 point spot). Do you use some rudder deflection to the up hill to help prevent this?
Wondering what's up with the F-16 model, or DCS's physics model, as your not alone in bitching that the F-16 turns and rolls too slowly, can't achieve the angles and G's, bleeds energy too quickly. Is the air too dense (p), or have they tapped in an erroneous set of drag coefficients (Cd)? Any chance you can pester the like of Mover (C.E.Lemoine), Gonsky, and that merry crew, and try and spot the obvious mistake? Mover, in his latest F-16 vs F-18 video, around 32:20, suggested a Demo Clean F-16 isn't too far off what he's used to.

Yes! Keep the DCS content coming!
Would love to see you have a take on Growling Sidewinder in a dogfight with the DCS F16-C. That would be very entertaining I imagine.
probably very similarly to when GS flew against Até. in that one, Até hadn't really used DCS before, was using the mouse to look around or something on his laptop, and GS got the first round. after that it wasn't much competition, GS struggled from then on.
I’ve always loved the F-16. I know it’s not the most advanced or maneuverable but I still love it
I want to try this game so bad with VR with the Yaw seat. I want the feel as close as possible. I have no idea on how to fly but looks like so much fun.
I enjoy your videos a lot. Thanks for making them for us mortals.
that's was awesome mister....ooohh man i'll watch most of your videos with pleasure...i like how you put your head on the seat...i don't know why,but i think its better to handle the force
You should dogfight growling sidewinder sir!
Good stuff, can you compare this Block 50 F110-GE-129 beauty, in a clean setup how's his energy retention compares with a real one? Like for example in an horizontal STR maneuver near deck or 10k feet.
I like the action and your commentary. You have my like and comment, sir.
Just remember this is not exactly a 'review' per se, just commenting on the action.
Impressive reflexes man, great job
I think you should definitely try Falcon BMS v4.37. Wayyy better sim for F16
Heyya! That tip on PIO is golden! Thank you ☺️
That’s really nice seeing a real F16 pilot trying DCS, and like it.
Love that you are using Tobii Eye Tracker! I love mine!
Your gunnery skills are certainly a lot better than me Sir! Nice video! Stay safe - blue skies!
Worth a look!
oh interesting.. I was having a look on it 2 years ago... if it gets some decent modernisation done, it might be very interesting.
Would be great to see you do a team up with either "Growling Sidewinder" or "Longshot".
Great stuff, subscribed. Thank you for sharing your knowledge, looking forward for more videos!
Awesome content as usual, really fun to watch your expert insights. Keep up the great work and God Bless.
Look cool, sound cool, be effective.
Max Afterburner motto
@@marcosantiago6818
Albert Einstein comes to mind.
Excellent man spreading! Give those balls some air!
F-16 is probably the next one I’m going to get. Squadron I’m with is carrier based and primarily flies F-18, but there are a few that have been wanting to do the Viper on some off days.
Awesome that your getting on DCS
I hear fighter pilots talk about fighting in the phone booth. Would love to see that somehow
How do pilots control the wheels to move a fighter jet on the ground?
They turn on nose wheel steering and use the rudder controls.
@@co-opgamercouple7689 thanks I always thought you guys used a small wheel you spin. So fascinating.
Dear Sir, splendid stuff. Many thanks indeed for your passion and support. Kind regards, Nick
Very nice. The F-16 will always be my favorite jet fighter.
Just wondering if someone can give a newb advice on the complete setup: throttle, joystick, and anything else needed?
yeah I have a video coming up on that soon, cheers
HI, have you ever tried Falcon BMS?
Thank you for your service. I was in VF 111 sundowners f14 squadron many moons ago as a parachute rigger. I am working on my airshow demonstration in dcs world with the viper. When performing the 8 point roll, I am having problems with the nose sinking down in the middle of it (especially in the 4 point spot). Do you use some rudder deflection to the up hill to help prevent this?
It's only a matter of time until there's a dogfight vid with Growling Sidewinder :)
Time for the GS server!! It’s crazy in there, best guys at BVR in the world (IMHO)👍👍
Nice Video... i am actually learning flying in DCS with the Viper. I learned how to start/shut down and land the jet. I am working like learning by doing and its worth the time. i actualy got all Jet Modules, like F-14/15/16/18 Mirrage, A-10 etc. I have no idea how much years it will take to fly all those jets 🤣
Winwing makes a sweet viper throttle!
there's a comedian named Bill Engvall that got to fly with the Thunderbirds. he told the story during one of his specials a long time ago. you should definitely check it out, i promise you'll laugh
@growlingsidewinder needs to take notes on the gunnery. 😂
Your delivery was spot on! Brilliant commentary there. As far as gameplay goes, you cheated. You're a REAL FIGHTER PILOT! 😂 Cheers! 🤟
This was a bummer. What I really wanted to watch is how you get in the control zone
am i the only one who wants to see Max and Growling Sidewinder face off? i think it'd make for a hellacious video.
Thanks for the Tips!
You bet!
Spectacular content. You should consider flying or a duel with Growling Sidewinder of Grim Reapers ✈
Will someone please help me with this question!?! I was at the war of 1812 memorial celebration in Baltimore. And before the blue angels performed a single F15 came out and performed. It was 90% gray. With blue and yellow paint on the tips of the ontrol surfaces.
I can't find any info on this plane!!! Can someone please tell me where I can find more info on this plane??
Ty
Rick
Would love to see you fly the F-16 in MSFS as well. I believe it's not as accurate or as well simulated based on what others have said, but I do think it'd be interesting to see your overall take on at least some of the positives.
Why don’t you get TrackIR for head tracking? Try it!!
For sure, maybe even switch to VR. Thanks!
He's using it. His curves just aren't set up right.
I prefer VR but it's hard to use if you stream obv. I think he has a VR headset too..
@@MaxAfterburnerusa Well, they both have their pros and cons, you might like TrackIR because it give you natural head movement in full degrees. -even if you move towards your HUD/MFD’s etc. it comes with a small camera and clip which …clips to a a baseball cap 🧢 give it a shot
@@_Jake.From.Statefarm_ I don’t think he is. Also, based upon his reply.
@@Av-vd3wk He uses FaceTrackNoIR, face tracking with his camera I suspect..
It's probably different flying the Viper with a stick that moves so much.
Not with the 4xM82s and long jammer Neo. Cant roll it to the max nor turn hard that way. Jett that out and compare. Even to me it seems that 16 bleeds energy faster and builds later or its just a perspective thing. Some people would appreciate DCS perf comparison to RL. I think its underrated a bit. Give us some MP matches when ready just use alt name there cos everyone will swarm you as bees to the honey. Sense up that head sensor too. You'll need it.
This is an awesome vid.! Love the growing channel. That loadout was nuts. How do ya'll train for the added weight of specific loadouts like this so you know how the bird performs with varying weights. Is it rather noticeable? Curious if they just load you up with inert ordnance.
What we really want to know is please, is the turn rate and turn radius up to spec.
Are you gonna check out the F-15E when it comes out
Ryan, hi! Could you please give us your feedback regarding the F-16 flight model in DCS and BMS? Which one is more realistic? In DCS, it drains energy very quickly when maneuvering at >5G, and in BMS it is more maneuverable and holds energy better. P.S. Thank you very much for your hard work and amazing content! I always watch your videos with great pleasure!
I can't wait till you get ur hands on the f15 e
Any chance your store can deliver to the UK? Would love to grab a T-shirt!
Great video @Max, are you using some sort of face tracking to look around the cockpit? cheers 👍
Do you have a certain curve setup on your joystick to help with formation flying / precision? It's something I'm struggling to be smooth with currently. Is your joystick base the thrustmaster warthog or another brand? Thanks.
I'm a DCS addict-I enjoy watching a pro fly it-I realize-I'm not a pro.
How would a Viper compare to a F-35 in a 1 on 1 dogfight?
Would love to see some fight collabs.
SWEET Sixteen..my little sweet sixteen....F16.....ALMOST 50 AND STILL NO OTHERS MATCH HER!!!
Super realistic sim. Enjoyed it.
Hey Bro. I am curious... You having cockpit experience in F16, is the throttle and stick so far off to the side? I thought they are placed much closer. You are the SME on your rig and jet experience. Would like your experience on this matter.
Do US fighter pilots use flight simulators in training, similar to how Airline Passenger Pilots do ?
