Soup to Nuts on Glue blocks. Tips you can use. And a Special announcement on upcoming Makin' Shavin's. Join me on Wednesday evenings for Makin Shavin's Live from the shop.
Thank you for another great video that took some of the mystery out of glue blocks. I've used them for a couple of years ... now I know how to use them correctly. Thanks again.
This here Southern boy thought your pronunciation of “tenon” was PERFECT! It was your pronunciation of all the other words you used I had trouble with!!! 😂🤣😂🤪 PS - Thank you for this excellent video! I learned a lot.
Hi Cap, I have grown to appreciate your videos immensely. I am a pretty serious woodturner and though I have taught woodworking, I have no interest in producing videos (pictures are difficult enough). Anyway, thank you for your light approach to turning and sharing your obvious skills. Dan Campbell
Thanks Capt, I've been wondering about the best glue block set up, glad you did a video on it. I just made up some OB shine juice for the handles I'm making for your detailing duo can't wait for them to get here. And thanks for hooking me up with the Sarge, just sent him another 25 freedom pens. I'll be tuning in Wed.
I really enjoy the videos, thanks Capt ed. I was reading about folding sandpaper out rough side out to prevent slipping what ya think. This was in a wood turners course Guttenberg project read for free.
Hi Capt'n.. I enjoy your videoes all the way over here in N.Z. Just a throw away... My understanding here is that the pairing is mortise and tenon... And socket and spigot. Having a tenon and a socket is like having an area of one metre by eighteen inches.
lmfao you are so funny. you make watching videos good . not like some others . really like the oh hell coat hanger . thanks for the great video was looking for resin bowls but found you and i did subscribe
Hey, Cap, your Glue Block Placement Guiding Device, Mark 2, looks amazingly similar to the Behind Desk Computer Wire Extraction Device I bought from a guy for $14.95. People told me I paid entirely too much, but it was invaluable (Yes, some actually thought I paid that much for a piece of hanger...LOL) Thanks for the great advice on glue blocks!
Hey there Cap'n, how's it going? well I was fortunate enough to get a lathe, Central machine from Harbor Freight, variable speed, with stand and reversible head along with a cheap set of gouges, all thanks to the misses. The lathe was 17% off, plus I had an additional 20% off coupon, so the lathe, gouges and a couple of small items all cost under $300.00. With this said, I need some learnin' and you're probably gonna get sick of seeing my name under "comments", cuz I'ma gonna be buggin'. Well Thanks for the vids and all the help, keep turnnin' and see ya soon. =)
Greetings from across the pond where its raining and cold. Thanks for the ray of sunshine in your presentation on glue blocks - made it really straight forward and useful. Keep up the good work - Gerald Crowley. ps any chance of your tips email
Capt Eddie, A very nice video with fantastic explanations. One question, what glue do you use? CA glue (thin, med or thick), Hot Glue or Wood Glue (using paper/glue/paper)? Thanks
Thanks for the great videos CapnEddie. I wonder about wood species used for the glue block. I assume that same wood as the project wood is best, but other than that, is hardwood glueblock better than softwood or visa versa or what? Can you enlighten a newbie turner.
I use hot glue for all waste blocks myself and it works great. but the key word here is HOT. If a person plugs in the glue gun and tries to apply glue just as soon as it starts flowing, that is not hot enough and it will separate if you get a snag. . I know when mine is hot because the glue will actually start flowing from the tip without pressure on the trigger and it looks and flows a lot like honey. Each gun is a bit different so it does take a bit of trial and error.
Hey Cap. As always, loved the video. I've got a question though. Unless I'm mistaken, you used a spindle roughing gouge to true up your glue block - which has a faceplate orientation. Isn't that to be avoided?
What adhesive do you recommend? You mentioned CA, but my thought were that it would be too brittle? I was always under the thought to use hot glue. If it was to come off it would be gradual, giving you some time to turn off the lathe....or duck. Your thoughts?
As crnicholls has said, the glue needs to be HOT. I'm not a big fan of it myself. CA is faster, easier and plenty strong, provided you have enough contact surface. If it's a really big piece, use wood glue (Titebond 1 or 3 are my favorites). As for taking longer to come loose if the glue fails, it's no slower to happen than with CA or anything else. One thing to remember in the event of glue failure, under 1000rpm the wood falls, over 1000rpm and it's air-borne, regardless of size.
new to channel. In 2012 i was getting remarried welding and Fabing some high in machines run a mill and lathe for years then i wanted a new hobby wood turning. 2024 found a small wood lathes, bought basic tools, wood turning is addictive as meth making i bet i eat sleep turning wood how do i hold this. did i use the wrong tool. drive your Neiborhood after a storm with a chain saw . is that not sick like a crack addict wood turning is up there with fishing sun out go fishing to cold to go fishing turn wood our just turn wood at home no gas for the truck or boat or bait lol caution people if you just got married run away from wood turning unless you buy your wife a nicer lathe than yours. lol thank you CAP EDDIE
Hey Cap'n, Where can I get that same zip up smock or shirt you got. I see others with them but don't where I can Get one, Thanks and keep on making great videos!!
Eddie, Great work on the videos... I'm hooked. One of the shows talked about the Henry Taylor "texturizing" tools and you said the actual wheels can be purchased from Grainger. Do you have a part/page number ? Thanks
Just found your videos. As a newbie to lathe work, I found the glue blocks issue quite informative. Does anybody make relatively low cost turning tools? I got a 4 pc.starter set from Buck tools ($60) but looking for specific tools such as a 3/8" bowl gouge.
Capt. What are your thoughts on using Hot Glue via those electric hot glue guns? Do they work and provide a strong enough glued surface for hollow turning on say goblets and other small objects? Appreciate your thoughts!! As always, Thanks!!
Eddie, does them cutters fit Sorby Turnmaster? That's the one with the ends that you screw on. I have a couple with a round and a square. I'd like to use it with your carbide if it will fit. Planning on getting many things on your website. Great idea's.
Hello Eddy, I,am a starter with woodturning so, i have a question about glue blocks . What kind of glue you use with these blocks. Glue tape or wood glue? When you use woodglue the block surface Will damage i think......
I do enjoy your videos as I'm learning the basics. The instant glue is a stumper though, All of Woodcraft CA glues doesn't use a spray hardener, although they sell Titebond spray hardener. Huh? And none of Titebond's CA glue mentions a spray hardener. Is this a spoof? I've been spoofed before in New Orleans and I remember it well, and well, you're not that far.
Uhhh, I forgot to ask my question! I am not a big fan of CA glue (I find it is relatively brittle and I invariably make a mess in using it. I was wondering if you have considered hot melt glue? I know many turners use it and I have too, on occasion. Thanks, Dan Campbell
I am not sure you will be able to help me with this issue I bought an Atlas lathe with a couple of faceplates my problem in the faceplates are 1x8tpi and the lathe is 1x10tpi and not having much luck finding a tap to even make one out of wood any help? would I be able to get a good tap by just drilling and forcing a treat right onto my lathe shaft without grooving notches on my lathe threads. or if you know of any 1x10tpi faceplates available
Capt. Eddie...I've never had much luck with CA holding on to anything...Several other turners use hot glue and you seem to not be a advocate of it...why? I really enjoy your face plate/glue block video but wonder if I can safely use other glues rather than CA... Am I doing something wrong with the CA or can I safely use hot glue...??? Thanks for all you do for us 'Newbies'... :>)
You always put a good message out with a good sense of humor!
OK Cp, that's for me tomorrow. Thanks, Stewart, south west Australia.
I enjoyed watching this turning video more than any I have watched. You are having fun and its contagious!
Thank you for another great video that took some of the mystery out of glue blocks. I've used them for a couple of years ... now I know how to use them correctly. Thanks again.
It's great to learn something while watch your videos, but heck I'd watch them just for the entertainment value:-)
This here Southern boy thought your pronunciation of “tenon” was PERFECT! It was your pronunciation of all the other words you used I had trouble with!!! 😂🤣😂🤪 PS - Thank you for this excellent video! I learned a lot.
Nice ideas! I didn't know to put so much thought into a glue block, but all your points make sense. Nice video.
i always learn something from your videos. Keep up the great work Cap'n!
Always enjoy your videos, and learn a lot, thanks
Now we know who named all of the tools. Your awesome capt. Thanks Bob
Thanks for the very helpful tip on glue blocks. Also, I really enjoy your sense of humor! I hope you’re doing well,
Love the humor and great technique!
Had french toast for breakfast and then lessons from the Cap'n. What a great Sunday morning and I still have all day to make some shavings!
Thankyou from a complete beginner(Australia) You are my man!!! Looking forward to making my glue blocks.Cheers
Laser placement dead center device. I have to say I laughed at that. Very educational and fun. Thanks. Oh and the mark II I may have one.

It's not a spoof, all CA's can be used with or without accelerator.
aye, me too. Dunno whether I will still be awake.

Hey Cap'n! Thanks for another good video!
How's the tally for Freedom Pens looking?
The Wednesday evening is on UStream Tv. USTREAM.com Look for Makin Shavins

How much time do you think that you will get at 1000 RPM, one or two revolutions?
I don't trust it.
Did he call it a style center?

I knew there were other uses for that device.
Cap'n Eddie, do you still sell cutters?
Is that spindle or bowl roughing gouge?
Oops. Never showed us how to glue it to the bowl blank. Never showed us what types of glue to use.
What is CA?
what is CA?
