I’m ceaselessly amazed at how craftsmen like you are able to visualize a piece of art from within a piece of wood that would otherwise be rotting in the woods somewhere. For the longest time, I’ve just been using RUclips to watch you and Matt Jordan. Love and admiration from 🇺🇸.
Wonder how old this piece of wood is??? And you have the vision to turn it into the work of ART. LOVE IT thanks for showing us part of the procedure 😅😅😊😊😮
This is the first time I've seen someone work with Yew like this. I had no idea it had such color variation. I love how you worked with the nature and shape of the wood and didn't try to fill in the voids. The finished piece is so interesting, so beautiful. Thank you for sharing your talent with us.
@@AndyPhillipWoodturning 100% agree. I'm not creative in the slightest and have an odd dislike of earthy tones, but the colours in that wood are unbelievable! Out of interest, how much, typically, would a piece like that sell for? PS This isn't a "muh price" type of question. Having reduced yews several times and knowing how quickly they can go through chains, I can only tip my hat to your chisel sharpening skills. Beautiful end result, I love how you tailor your approach to each piece, but yew is a special wood and it certainly looked fantastic when you'd finished. Thank you for the upload.
ALL heavily GRAINED wood is BEAUTIFUL !!! ............................ROOTS , BURLS so on and so forth !!! The FINISHED PIECE IS FANTASTIC & OUTSTANDING !!!
I cannot say enough just how much I love that piece. The color variations in the wood are so amazing. I'm glad that you didnt use any epoxy or other materials with this piece. The grain is so beautiful on its own
RUclips recommended this to me randomly. As a first time viewer with zero experience or real interest in woodworking, this was interesting enough to keep me for the whole thing. Good job.
As a landscaper I have pulled -by hand- 100s of yew stumps over the years(taxus). The part where you drill the heart out..... it felt like that last root finally gave for me. Thank you! Cathartic!
That root ball produced some interesting optical effects when it was spinning. I love seeing what results one can get from root balls and burls. Stunning piece! I would give it pride of place!

Generally, Mr. Phillip, your videos have given me something to aspire to in my own shop. This one just makes me realize that there are skill levels in turning that it is useless for me to aspire to. 99 ways for that to go wrong for every one that resulted in such success, and yet you make it look easy. Absolutely astonishing craftsmanship in this work, and the wood itself came through with stunning colors and texture. World class work.
Stunning, and the colours are beautiful - the purple and lilac against the creamy white is amazing. Quite scary thought - particularly when using the Forstner bit.
