    I honestly don't know too much about Mr. Gustavo, but I had an absolute blast watching him conduct the John Williams Across the Stars performance. And just from watching that one performance, I can see examples of all the qualities mentioned in this video.

    6:24 My favorite moment. Reminds me of my favorite conductors from when I used to do choir and orchestra. So much fun, such descriptive ways of explaining how to get closer to the desired result. "More band sound. But it's a band not to celebrate, but to go to the (death noise)." "Sorry Shostakovich!" "So beautiful. A little more... ugly. Eh?"

    I think we witness the battle of volume verses substance in the middle of this video (around 4:05 I think), the way he corrects the musicians adds so much substance to those bars, there definitely is a noticable difference in their result and also, at least in my mind, an added substance.

    @cutepossession I'm surprised you said that because I used to think the same until I saw this precise video. The understanding and the attention to slight and minuscule details truly makes a piece beautiful rather than mediocre. The orquestras he works with are highly revered. Although it's true a conductor is nothing without the band, the band would be lost without a good conductor.

    I have the highest regard for Gustavo Dudamel but yes it's true that he has been over rated, at least from what I've heard so far. This shouldn't detract from his amazing talent and hopefully as he gets older he will mature into a truly great conductor. His enthusiasm and clear love of his profession is to be admired by everyone!

    • @padredemishijos12
      @padredemishijos12 8 лет назад +2

      +cameronpaul Overrated? You have not heard enough. Did you hear him at the BBC Proms? You think that the Mahler Resurrection interpretation was overrated? I do think that rarely hyper praise is accurate, and in this case it is justified.

    • @TheVaughan5
      @TheVaughan5 8 лет назад

      Yes, from what I've heard from him I do think he is overrated but that doesn't mean he can't give some very good performances. As I said however, I have the highest regard for him and maybe in time his reputation will be fully justified. To answer your question, no I didn't hear the performance you mention so I'll take your word for it!

    @hugocaracas202 Before Chavez, the families of the musicians had almost no social rights.They lived in a state of material deprevation. They had no voice in the government and little hope.They were hungry, no free health care, and very expensive education. Rampant crime, government corruption and just plain POVERTY. Chavez changed EVERTHING, and Dudamel and the Simon Bolivar Youth Orchestra is a product of the Bolivarian Revolution.That is why the music sounds infinately better than before.

    They're building a false mith. What can this child understand about DSCH Fifth? Listen to Mravinsky, listen to Kondrashin. Shostakovich is the criyng Conscience of the modern age. A violent and introverted apostle. He speaks about dark and horrible truths. Yes of course, Dudamel is gifted. Very gifted. Yes, but too superficial. He don't know, he can't know. This guy must study, study, study, develop himself. (sorry for my english)

    • @Jupiter-T
      @Jupiter-T Год назад

      Hi, I'm curious what you think of Dudamel now, if you're still on RUclips these days. 12 years after you posted your comment, he's definitely not a child anymore (age 42), and he's conducted many different orchestras. He's "calmed down" a bit from his Duracell plus energy, but having seen some of his recent conducting and rehearsal footage on RUclips, I think he's just as good as his younger days if not better.

    • @olmaleo
      @olmaleo Год назад

      @@Jupiter-T It's very curious, because just a month ago, in a conversation, I was "defending" Dudamel because he has evolved a lot... But it has been pointed out to me that his experience with orchestras and his sound consciousness has improved, but he lacks a real culture, not only musical, that makes great conductors "great". Bernstein who reads Goethe and only after much thought conducts Liszt's "Faust" Symphony.

    • @olmaleo
      @olmaleo Год назад

      @@Jupiter-T In summary, it is not Dudamel's fault but of our times, he is a "pop" conductor like Lang Lang, despite being an enormously gifted pianist, is a pop pianist. The superficiality of our times makes this kind of musicians stars and pop stars. For example, I am not opposed to orchestras performing Morricone and John Williams, but when they do so too often and when they are considered "great composers" it is obvious that there is no longer a sense of proportion.

    • @Jupiter-T
      @Jupiter-T Год назад

      @@olmaleo Eh but John Williams IS a great composer. Yes, there are many other composers in our day that are wonderful and deserve as much recognition as Williams. But just because Williams is popular or writes for film doesn't mean he lacks substance. Many famous composers wrote film scores.
      Yes, I would LOVE if orchestras played more obscure composers, not just Beethoven this, Mozart that, etc. But orchestras often are under pressure to put butts in seats, so it's hard for any composer to break in.
      Also, to defend Dudamel, he may explain pieces he's conducting to people in an entertaining manner instead of being dry or serious, but I don't think that means he doesn't have a deep understanding of them. It is possible to be both knowledgeable and fun.
