Making a simple route in LittleNavMap, and replicating it in the PMDG Boeing 737 in Flight Simulator

  • A subscriber to the channel - and a newcomer to flight simulation in general - asked if I could walk through programming a route into LittleNavMap, and then setup the same route in the Boeing 737 FMS - just to show the absolute basics. This video doesn't get into performance, cruise levels, airways, or anything like that - just the basic departure, destination, SID, STAR, runway choice, and some simple modification of the route.

    I'm going to re-iterate - this video DOES NOT go through correct procedures, or the full story. I'm ONLY showing how to program the bones of a route in. In the real world you would be looking at altitudes, airways, and so on. Indeed - if flying for an airline the entire route would be dictated to you in an operational flight plan - which Simbrief can simulate for you. Anyway. Just heading off the legion of internet police that will land on this video and say "you didn't do this, or consider that" :)

      No complaints from here - that was an excellent overview of a few of the basic LNM functions. I think you're the only Sim Pilot that I've seen that uses it, which is a shame as it's a brilliant tool and should be more widely known. Once you learn the basics it's invaluable, and can be as simple or as complex as you want.

    Thanks for your work, Jonathan. I love your instructional videos. As someone mentioned earlier you are a great teacher. You get right to the key issue and make it easy to understand. I downloaded little nav map a few days ago after watching your videos, and have become quite fond of its features. I purchased a 737-600 a while back and am tickled that I recently was able to figure out their tutorial flight with success. One thing that's flummoxed me is entering little nav map's flight plan into the 737. When I copy the flight plan into notepad and begin entering it into the FMC, sometimes the names of SIDS/STARS are slightly different and don't appear in the FMC. It seems little nav map is more up to date than the FMC in the 737. I see a lot of discussion out there about this but I'm trying to figure out how to solve without having to buy into Navigraph or something along those lines. Keep up the Great Work, Sir.

    • @jonbeckett
      @jonbeckett  Год назад

      There is no easy way of solving it without navigraph. Before I had a navigraph subscription (and I may ditch navigraph at some point), I would just choose a similar SID or STAR if I didn't have it - or tell ATC I would need vectors.

    Thanks for that once again you nailed it, especially for a beginner. Your lessons on Little Nav Map have turned me from not enjoying it to just loving the program. I know some people want to run before they crawl, I believe what you showed was just perfect for someone starting out with the program.

    Hey something even faster on the second row of the top rows of icons the 7th one with the + gives you a box simply type in KRDU space KATL gives you a faster flight plan. If you know your route you can type it in. Lots of times I do the Departure and Arrival then 10th icon with the Magic Wand at LNM can make a complete plan depending on your selection in the box that comes up. Then you can add a Arrival and Dep to that.

    • @jonbeckett
      @jonbeckett  Год назад

      Yes - I worried that the video was already getting really long. There's a really good benefit to writing a route by hand too - you can choose airways.

    Nice job! I am actually going to try this procedure for the Zibo 737-800 in X-Plane 12. I will let you know my result. Unfortunately, the binary system has not able us to safe the plan and introduce it exactly as designed directly within the FMC! 😥 Thank you and regards. Just landed and all went perfectly well.

    • @stu3tristan9x9
      @stu3tristan9x9 Год назад +1

      Yes you can but it will not export the Departure and Arrival procedures you have to enter those in yourself from the FMC, What I do is to develop the departure and arrival like Johnathon did but not put in the Departure and Arrival Procedures in LNM at this stage. I then use LNM to determine and to see what Departures and Arrival Procedures I can use in the FMC and enter those accordingly

    How do I know what direction the wind is coming from? I'm talking about the parts where you said read the wind on the NOAA which I understood but I can't seem to understand how to know the direction. Sorry if it's a dumb question.

    • @jonbeckett
      @jonbeckett  9 месяцев назад

      When you see the METAR for an airport (hover the mouse over it in LittleNavMap), it will look something like this:
      TJIG 311351Z 10008KT 10SM HZ SCT030 SCT070 31/26 A3000
      The first part is the ICAO code of the airport
      The second part is the date and time
      The third part is the wind speed and direction - in this case 100 degrees, 8 knots.
      Wind is always written as the direction it's coming from - not the direction it's going.

    I've input this exact plan following your video to the smallest detail. I am able to engage LNav VNav and autopilot. Once i take off the AP takes control, but the flight veers farther south and never turns west to approach KATL.. just keeps flying south. Any idea what I've done wrong?

    Can I send the route straight from LNM to the FMC in 737-600 ?

    • @jonbeckett
      @jonbeckett  Год назад

      You can export the route from LNM as an FMS file - which you have to save in the appropriate folder within the filesystem. When you've done that, the 737 will see it as a company route. I'm sure if you google for it, you'll find the folder path :)

      In the file menu, explort the plan as a PLN file. Then in the simulator, while on the world map screen, click "More" at the bottom, then load the PLN file.
