    YES! It's exausting to hear people dump on music. It ignores the efforts of everything happening around those individuals, and frankly shows their laziness to not hunt for something they enjoy but to complain that somehow the entire generation is doomed to bad music. If your mad at what apeals to the masses, then don't listen to what apeals to the masses. It's such a strange argument.

      Jeremy- absolutely! You know? In 1986 I couldn't understand what people thought was so great about Bon Jovi. But millions loved them, so I set out to find out why. I discovered that pop music is also great, and that has broadened, not narrowed my scope.

    We need to distinguish between pop music and "music" as a whole. The Top 40 vs all that's available. What's your favorite Zulu war chant? What about Mark Isham's Windham Hill releases? Gypsy Jazz? World Music? The average listener's palette is so small that these discussions are essentially irrelevant. Everything is streaming now, so of course there's a lot of "back in my day syndrome" but it has less to do with the music and more to do with the quality of experience. Music recording used to be a somewhat holy rite for musicians that very few people had access to. I don't think it's a delusional need to have my childhood validated as much as being inundated by media 24/4 (most of which my ears don't care for) The commercialization of music is absolutely relentless these days and 20 second blips on tik-tok and clever "placements" now drive the market. So, I don't know if Rick Beato et al always narrate their sentiments perfectly, but I I'm not going to pretend that I don't understand the general message.

    • @hoborec
      @hoborec  День назад +1

      Absolutely! I were never interested in the mainstream music anyways so this "problem" doesn't really touch me. I tend to hate the commercial pop a little less these days though. But there are so many explanations to why that could be.
      I hope you didn't take my "debate piece" video as that I don't recognise all the alternative genres of music. I just wanted to provide some perspective to people who are concerned that the top charting pop music are declining.
      I think all people over a certain age understand that general message. I just got tired of it and rather aim the little "anger" I have towards things that actually matter haha.

    What I miss about todays market is giving bands a huge amount of time and resources to write/record albums. There are obviously many bad examples of records being overdone - but also example albums that would never been made without the patience given to the artists. I like the idea of an album getting on the billboard without having a single on it.
    The album as a thing seems to be dead now, as an artist/band you are encouraged to release singles in shorter intervals. Making an album is a a bad use of resources.
    It would also be interesting to see statistics and trends around organic instruments being used. When was the last time we heard a guitar or drum solo on the radio? Can think of a few at tops. Everything evolves, but trends comes and goes.
    Thanks for a nice episode!

    • @hoborec
      @hoborec  2 дня назад +2

      I get what you mean but it can also be flipped the other way.
      These days you don't need a lot of money to make a really good pre-prod and writing demo. I bet there are tons of records released today that would never have been able to be made in the early days. At the same time back then some artists had super weird record deals where they were obligated to release a certain amount of albums within a specific time, resulting in a lot of crap from otherwise iconic bands.
      To get attention you're right about the album/single situation. Established bands do still release albums successfully. It was never a good idea for a new band to come out and release a full album the first thing. We tried the whole thing with singles with the band I have with my girlfriend. We released one song each month for a full year and got some good attention for it. When all the songs were released we made it in to a physical album and started a whole new release process which was also relatively successful. I think you need to get outside the box a little bit. There's no rule that says you can't release every song of an album as singles before releasing the album =)
      Don't know about solos but organic instruments have come and gone right? Late 90's feels like it had a lot of rock influenced pop. No doubt and stuff like that.

      No you just have to produce your own. I'm 40% completed on a self-produced double album. See 30 years ago it took a few hundred thousand dollars to record a commercial album. Today you can do it at home.

    Apart from the clickbaity title I enjoyed that.
    Music has always been a money game and therefore the current winning "formula" will be copied until people get tired of it and there is a new winning formula.
    Almost every original pop/rock icon we admire today, like e.g. Bowie, Pink Floyd, Sabbath, Prince, Led Zep, Neil Young… you name it, actually all started as underground until their formula got traction.
    I started to get into music in the early 80s with Joy Division, the Cure and Birthday Party / Bad Seeds and literally nobody knew about them except for a few.
    Cure and Bad Seeds play arena shows now. Joy Division are legendary. That still baffles me sometimes. I would never have thought at the time.

    Well, many of us know that pop music has been a polished turd for a long time. We're just sick of the fact that 'pop music' gets forced on us especially in monocultural societies.
    Personally, I now live in China and music is much more diverse. Big scenes in live music - particularly live metal, death metal, punk and thrash. Also K-pop. J-pop, and C-pop can be heard everywhere as well as some western music. Even a lot of trad music and Christmas songs (anytime of the year - if you've never heard Rudolf the Red-Nosed Reindeer at 42 degrees and burning sun you've not had an interesting time. 🙂

    I think the decline in the quality of music started with MTV. Since those days, we have been objectively spiraling downward. Nowadays, there are great exceptions in every genre of music, 100%, but overall, we produce a lot of rubbish, partly because even a 3-year-old can drag and drop some beats and create a song on a laptop.
    Another problem is the lack of interest in music today. We have too many distractions (scrolling through social networks, Netflix, etc.), and art in general has been heavily affected. The best album in the world cannot compete with scrolling on Instagram or TikTok from a dopamine release perspective.

      Anyone can create and release music now. Which is fucking awesome!! The hard thing is to communicate it to people and to get people to care. But is the lack of interest in music really a thing?
      Take Glastonbury Festival for example. They have been around since the 1970s. They have over 200.000 attendees every year. Last year they sold out in about an hour. This year they sold out in under 40 minutes. Apparently 2.5 million people tried to get tickets. Feels like the interest is pretty high.

    Yeah that’s what I’m commenting all the time on Rick Beato’s videos. But if they had compared it to those average pop songs of their time it wouldn’t be any different.

    Thank you for being the voice of reason in this conversation. I enjoy music from many different eras, but I mainly listen to modern metal and honestly the only qualitative changes I've noticed between the different eras have to do with the technical limitations of the time period, which many engineers of the past did their best to overcome. Trends come and go, but good songs stand the test of time and I reckon many modern songs people like Beato bemoan will be classics in 30 years time.
    A thing I would like to add personally is people need to stop constantly using the term "overproduced". The term means "more polished than it should be" and that's not an objective standard. Every artist has their own artistic vision and only they can determine whether the end result is overproduced or not.
    Also love your shirt.

      That's a great addition, and very important! I'm guilty of it myself every now and then tbh. I guess it goes hand in hand with me identifying with making a bit more rough productions and that I like it that way. But depending on who you ask a lot of people would consider my work over produced as well.

    Ya man I agree 100%. I am 42 and I remember how much absolute shit you have to fast-forward/skip over when you bought an album in the 80s/90s. Todays music is quite good, I think people are just spoiled for options and can't decide what's good anymore because the standards are so high. People consider the golden age of music to be the 1950s or 60's but I've dug into that rabbit hole and there's even more bullshit to dig out from that era. It was so expensive to record anything back then that they had to make a lot of compromises on time and quality...so the listener usually only got 1 good song on an album.
    And don't get me started on how bad sounding punk and metal was back then. Todays demos are better than most EP's back then.

    Plus, the really important change is the one Beato et Al has ignored completely: 30 years ago only those who had a record deal even got to record at all! We have 60,000,000 independent releases in 2024. Many are undoubtedly very creative. Many, including my own, reflect a past musical tradition made new. Almost NONE are part of the mainstream music industry which isn't even paying artists anyway. How relevant is that?

    There is one problem with (post-2000s) modern music: compression and loudness. Today's music is too perfect and overly produced. Truth is most music since the 1950s has suffered from poor songwriting and repetitive beats. Yes, there are bad pre-1950s music as well, but not to this extent. On the contrary, there are also great musicians around if you work hard to find them.

    Ulf setting the record straight!
    "What bands did you grow up listening to? Leave your bands in the comments:"
    Grace Will Faaaaall! 🫂
    I think the main difference can be summarized with a quote from Marshall McLuhan: "The medium is the message".
    Blabla the French revolution was not the actual irreversible event. The printing press a couple of years before it was. It was not the texts in the letters. It was that we now could distribute thoughts at an alarming speed, no longer held back by Central Authority in the same manner et. c.
    I grew up watching morning cartoons, VHS tapes, putting Fugees and rock bands on cassette from grandpa's radio. TV still ruled but throughout my life and it has slowly switched to the internet. Kids today won't grow up watching broadcast TV. The rockstar was often broadcasted live and recorded for television, feeding into the participatory culture of grand live shows and live music with performers to be adored and emulated by millions.
    The convenience of digital music production slowly switching affected me in my teens, we started demoing with our multiFX pedals when the (canonically) second wave of Metalcore came around and it was time for me to play music around the age of 15. With every subsequent evolution of "extreme rock" since that point, save for incredibly niche scenes and explorations, has had more and more production trickery first explored by modern production trends associated with Pop, EDM, Rap et. c.
    Knocked Loose playing Jimmy Kimmel now... Hahah... Poppy larping as a plant only to launch a metal band... Pop and Metal has arguably never been this close culturally nor technically.. but demographically it makes sense as metal is recognized as the categorically most popular genre across cultures according to some music experts.
    The computer is taking over.
    And I'm not sour about it honestly... We're having this renaissance of music that's revisiting and morphing sounds of the past with new conventions and realizations of what made previous eras great. I do hope meat space participatory culture makes a comeback though, but I trust the kids of the future to figure that out.

      Fuck you all, Grace will fall!!
      Wow that was an elaborate comment =)
      Yeah I'm also pretty positive to how sub cultures are morphing. I used to be upset about it but then again, as I mention in the video, these cultural expressions are so damn young. Too young for any one to make a claim really. Let it roam free haha.

      @hoborec  День назад +1

      Yes, that is the point. I'm comparing apples to apples. It doesn't prove anything to say that Pink Floyd made better music than Justin Bieber, it's not a fair comparison. I just wanted to show that maybe things aren't acutely becoming so much worse that some tend to feel.

    Congrats you have discovered every era has shite art the gems are mixed in.
    The difference between them and noe is now you don't need to know how to play a single instrument, and y'all will be complaining about ai generated music taking over in 3.2....

      You didn't have to be able to play an instrument in 1985 either. Actually not back in the 60s either. You just let someone else play all the instruments.

    I listened to those youtube videos and all I can think of is how metal kind of does not apply to it.
    Metal has its issues with sounding the same now a days but generally I don't think it applies to what they're talking about.
    At the end of the day the worst part about music... is the people.

    • @hoborec
      @hoborec  2 дня назад

      Oooh interesting. During some periods I’ve had the opposite perception. I got really tired of metal because I thought it all sounded the same. In hindsight it was probably just me getting tired of it.
      I probably just didn’t have the energy to follow the trends haha.
      Over all i think there are way more really good metal bands active now than it was before.
      I agree 50% with your finishing statement. People are both the best and the worst thing with my job.
