  • In this video we have a look at a 2008 Jeep Wrangler that has codes P0038 and P0052 stored in it. The other shop has already replaced the O2 sensors and the problem remains! Let's see if we can track this down in a timely fashion. -Enjoy!

      Astro tools has "NANO' impact sockets! #78211,78215 fahforget about those over sized sockets, but they look like the bolt through sockets on my bostich set

      when you used your Scam tool ODB II reader . have you used this one or even reviewed it ? Its a EBAY unit ...     My dad's friend, a longtime mechanic / shopowner, gave me sage advice when I opened my own shop in the 1970s. He said never trust another mechanic's work. That was the first place I'd look when diagnosing a problem. It paid off many times. You do great work Eric.

    I can't believe and don't understand for the life of me why that ground location was engineered where it was. What a great video...very informative and helpful. It's a plus to all automotive repair seeing the time that's spent tracking down a pesky wiring issue and the so called mistakes along the way. Its nice to see you didn't edit them out because it helps the public understand the reason a simple ground wiring issue isn't simple at all. I've got a jeep patriot with the same problem...thank you very much.

    I hate soldering/welding overhead. Great resolution on the broken ground. I was wondering where I would extend them to. Drilling out a ring terminal is awful. Thanks for the video.

    Eric, all the "mechanics" who watch your videos would say "stop your whining and apologizing" and please keep your videos as real as they seem. Every job I did had at least one "dummy" comment to myself. If you were perfect I wouldn't watch you. Great solution by the way.

    Brother thanks a ton for this video, you saved me thousands!!! I had all o2 high heat codes plus egr wire issues. My ac condenser also stopped working and Jeep replaced the TIPM ($1400 + charge). After checking my wires again for the o2s, I noticed Jeep ran a ground from the condenser to the body.... I then knew I had to have a ground issue somewhere. I tested the sensor wires for ground and nothing. I checked the g104 and it appeared to be good but I still couldn’t get a tone on my multimeter. I took the cable off and bam! I notice the cable was broken and not making a connection. Anyhow, I’ll be contacting Jeep to say WTF on the full TIPM charge and the rigged ground bypass... in the end cleared all codes and good so far. Thanks again

    One thing that i've learned about circuit high codes, is that they usually mean an open in the circuit somewhere, whether it is an actual break in a wire , or a pushed out terminal, or, as i've seen more commonly, connectors not completely seated together. Gotta give you props for doing a thorough investigation, that is what Chrysler does say in the service info. I've found and fixed stuff like this, and am disappointed by the hacks that are too lazy to do the job right. They're the ones that give the rest of us a black eye. Also, i knew before you looked it up that the G104 was in the engine compartment. That's Chrysler's numbering schema, one is in the front, two is in the middle (cabin), and three is in the rear.

    I wish I could find a mechanic like you around here. The shop I take my BMW to wanted $970 to change out 2 pre-cat o2 sensors. Only one of them was bad and you can see both of them in the engine bay right in front of your face. 5 minute fix but they wanted to charge 3 hours and $300 per sensor. No way. Excellent video Eric - you are a REAL mechanic, not a "parts changer" like some other shops.

    No need to apologize. What's important is that you clearly stated the corrections. As for showing us a different method of testing, at least I appreciate demonstrating the use of old style equipment as not all of us have a Power Probe.

    Eric. Nice to see the practical use of the Power Probe. I do NOT think your approach of checking the circuit from the PCM connector was wrong at all and indeed, after the fix, you were able to confirm ALL 4 Circuits in seconds as they were right next to each other. That method also checked the WHOLE Circuit from the PCM, through the device to ground and was much faster than tracking down each connector under the Vehicle. As for the Power Probe, using it made sure as you say that you always had a good, consistent, and the SAME ground for all your tests. Very helpful when under a rusty vehicle. That tool in the right hands with a good understanding of it's capabilities and design could save a ton of time. Keep using it often, but also the simpler tools for those without it. BRAVO!

    Eric, you are so much better than the average "mechanic" there is just no comparison. You are absolute top tier. Wish I had somebody with a quarter of your skills in my shop. What you saw with the misdiagnosis and cross threaded part is pretty much typical of the work I see in the field. Most of these guys now are so weak on diagnosis all they do is throw parts at the job. And I this case, they couldn't even do that right. Never apologize for not using the fastest method of diagnosis. Remember the other guys couldn't do it at all. Love these diagnostic videos, I always learn something.

I just get down on myself a little because I have a diagnostic routine and when I stray from it I feel like I waste time and leave a bad example to those trying to learn with out going down rabbit holes and getting side tracked. Just try to find the fastest and easiest way to a problem.

    most shops don't repair wiring issues, they swap parts if it doesn't work, they send you off to a wiring repair place. it's always been that way around here

    OUTSTANDING video! I am not being sarcastic. This video shows the frustrations of troubleshooting AND the troubleshooting was accurate. My daughter's jeep is doing the same exact thing. W those wires that close to a heat source, I can see how it baked the wires. ... great video!!!

    I was always taught by my father to turn the bolt CC into the threaded casting until you feel and hear the " CLICK". Then turn the bolt CW, threading it in every time. People get in such a darn hurry. Good video Doctor O.

    Don't beat yourself up about how you attacked this problem, you did a good job. Grounds Grounds! Automotive system grounds are the root of so many problems. Factory engineers just keep making the same mistakes with ground systems. I looked at that wiring diagram and saw it has a full time ground to the heater 02 circuit, I instantly said CHECK the GROUNDS.

    You started where I thought you should based on the information provided. I even anticipated you needed a PIN to check the ohms. I think I've been watching your videos too much. But they're good and they help me think and keep my brain active in my old age! The information you were provided was they swap the O2 sensors more than once and ended up putting in the old ones. I was thinking of wiring right away. I'm at 11:15 into this video. I can't wait to see how this turns out! The suspense is killing me!

    It's a shame these other shops are so inept as to screw shit up then dump it on you, it's just not right man. I feel bad for you Eric. I can see where it would be extremely frustrating. At least you were able to fix it. It's also too bad for the owner of the vehicle having to pay for all the F ups. Thanks for the video.

    I can't help thinking that the other ground wires in G104 are also knocking on death's door. I would have advised the customer to re-do all of those grounds, not just the broken ones. And the reason Eric was frustrated at the start was he was trying to fix both problems at once. It is much easier to concentrate on one problem. It is very likely that once you fix the one problem the other will also be fixed.

    You’re too hard on yourself! That was a great video and will help others avoid using swaptronics and the parts canon. Your video proves you should always check your power and grounds first before loading the canon! How the other shop missed it floors me! I’m no mechanic but you always check your power, control, and grounds. Thanks for the video!

    I have been chasing a p0158 o2 2/2 dtc for a while and this video led me to my solution. I went through the service manual on my Grand Cherokee and all the testing I thought it was a broken wire (harness disappeared under transmission). I soldered in a new signal wire to o2, no help. Then after your video boom corroded ground and wires at the fender. The wires were all covered with green corrosion. Vinegar and a tooth brush later and I am going to pass inspection!!! Thanks for the help.

    Love Hannah's comment "should have caught it on camera". Chrysler/Fiat and at one time Daimler/Chrysler aka as Mercedes. They're all junk, but as you would say "it pays the bills". I wonder what else didn't work when there were 6 grounds that you repaired.

    I always love these guys who know you're a mechanic's mechanic. I'll even give this particular shop kudos (of a sort) for sending you something they messed up knowing you'd pick up on it. Please tell me they owned up to it and didn't pawn it off as "it was that way when we got it." Thanks Eric. I always have a hard time figuring out whether it's more fun to see the fix or watch you own the diagnosis process.

    I can honestly say this is the best video I've ever seen on RUclips for auto repair. Why? Because it's REAL LIFE for most of us! We're all struggling to understand things that are at least in part kind of beyond our understanding. I found this video while trying to learn what a "good" o2 sensor even is.       Diagnosed an o2 circuit earlier today and found corrosion on some of the pcm terminals.

      Justin is right on the money. Maybe you missed a step in your usual preliminary Troubleshooting and Diag routine. But you have no idea how many viewers learned something from that.
      I watch ALL your videos and i rarely come away thinking anything other than it was time well spent. In 98% of your videos i learn something new or am enlightened to a better, quicker, and more common sense way to approach diagnosing issues with my own autos.
      And sometimes those pesky "Rabbit Holes" end up being a very valuable learning experience.... even if it's just learning what not to do next time.

    The ground locations on wiring diagram show upstream and down stream have separate ground locations,so fixing that one ground location on lh side of engine area fixed both upstream and down stream o2 grounding issues.great video.i learned alot..

    Dont be disappointed with your proceedures. You do whats right for yourself and its good to see your train of thought.
    There are so many O2 sensors and wires with a very confusing numbering system plus you are making a video so its no wonder confusion sets in. The main thing is you sorted the problem and made an interesting and honest video :)

      The only way you can find a good mechanic is through reference from someone who knows a little bit about cars or trial and error with your vehicle. That gets expensive

    If it was my care and I ever needed to replace that o2 sensor and the result of the stripped threads caused the need to have to replace the whole converter someone needs to be accountable. But knowing them they would make up some excuse saying that the cat doesn't work anymore and needs to be replaced. Just kind of a helpless feeling that really gets my blood boiling. Fantastic job as always Eric. Always enjoy watching and learning from you. Thanks!.

    21:30 nothing worse than being stuck behind a Caddilac Converter! I see why you make notes for yourself, I got confused between all the Driver's side bank 2 sensor 1 Passenger's side bank 1 sensor 2😂 top video Eric!

      I'm about to go chase my tail/battle with Allfailtel (aka Procrastinate/get sidetracked) on an SS Commodore (your version of a Pontiac G8 GT 6.0) with no A/C Radio Fan Demister etc, No Bi Control Comms work(with Autel)
      I honestly don't know how you do it Eric(find the time), I've spent so so long editing & uploading just a few videos in the last week, I take my hat off to you!!!

    sweet video. what you seen from other shops is why i fix my own. i ever find one that does it right like you i'd never touch a wrench tried quite a few over the years. keep up the great videos.

    Even the best of us get bunged up sometimes when we rely on other's work. Makes it hard to trust others sometimes, so when you get a trustworthy friend it makes them all the more valuable.

      the little shop I work at gets all kinds of "we can't fix that" from other shops in the
      area. It seems like all the "old" mechanics are gone. We have people coming in to
      get their points installed, and their dwell set. I had a guy yesterday who had his '61
      F100 towed to the shop because he couldn't get his starter installed. Hell, I'm 58yo
      I've literally forgotten more than I know...

    Thanks for making these videos. I used to slap my mechanic across the face with a stack of cash to get things done, but it feels great to fix your vehicle, even if just the little things.

    Had p0031 0037 0051 0057 pop up after state inspection. Never fails, every time I go to a service station, they always trigger some bs. In my case, it's my heater core which I'll be replacing soon. I cleared it but came right back. Definitely getting this heater core done asap!

    Not really loosing fuel economy but I’ll be checking the ground
    Dealer said the sensor is bad but I’ll check the ground out

    Don't beat yourself up brother. We all do things like this from time to time. the trick is owning it and moving forward to the ultimate issue and getting it fixed. If it is any consolation, I now know one of the problem areas on Wranglers to look for ground issues (thanks for that). Keep on truckin my friend...

    Great video, needed this help, I’ve changed out injectors thinking this was issue with misfire! Going to get the old ohm and run some numbers and diagrams, ugh lol!
