    Lots of W40 and some hammering on the side of the cylinder. Then, hammering the base. That worked for me, in a old office chair.

    Thank you so much Sir!!! I'm a 72 yo woman and YOU made it possible for me to change my own chair parts! Are you married??? ;)))

    The gas chamber, has >10at pressure remaining.
    Hitting with a heavy hammer, increases the risk of not being ample to present your next video......

    Yeah...I wish it had been that easy. I had to wedge a crowbar in place and wack it with a 4lb sledgehammer repeatedly before I could work it out with a vise grip. I've had the chair for 10+ years so it was wedged in pretty good haha! Of note, I also had to use the sledgehammer to get it off the base. I went from rubber mallet, to carpenter hammer, to sledgehammer on both pieces: so things escalated lol. I was practically stunned when the dang thing finally gave way.

      Yes, getting it out with a vise grip will always be difficult and a rubber mallot has too much bounce to be effective.I'm glad you got it out though. There's nothing like having the right tool to do the job.

      I think that I will just graduate to the sledge hammer. Very awkward project.

    Seems so easy, but I keep hammering my chair and no parts comes out. Will try to leave the wd40 for few days. Anyway, thanks for the time for making this useful video.

      Using a steel hammer? If so, you may need to borrow a long pipe wrench.

    My chair springs up when you get off of it and falls down when you sit on it? Is the valve possibly stuck on it?

    I seriously had to hacksaw my gas lift to pieces-and then I still had to hit it with a mallet.

    I like the little tool you used but I suggest you consider using a large plastic mallet or use a scrap of wood to protect the metal surfaces from getting scarred by the hammer. If the cylinder is still functional you can use it on another chair. Sometimes we just need to change to a different length cylinder for proper height. Also you should adjust the height periodically to keep all the parts lubed. If it stays in one position for many years it can get locked.

    Great. Sir. Can you please post if it is necessary that we should replace the can attached to the base, or simply change the cylinder part.

    I'm about to assemble a new chair. Is there anything I can do to the gas lift before fitting it so in a few years time (hopefully several years) when if fails removing it will be easier?

      I would would suggest applying a little "Never Size" grease to the tapered ends of the cylinder.

    • @johngardner1685
      @johngardner1685 5 лет назад

      Me I smeared some oil. A light coat of lithium grease would probably work better. And I did it at both ends.

    I cant get the part attached to the wheels to let go

      That was the hard part for me too. On the other end using a pipe wrench and a hammer (on the wrench handle) made pretty quick work. On the base end I put a piece of flat metal on the end of the gas lift. A flat pry bar works. supporting the base on the corner edge of an outdoor plastic garbage can and beat it out. And I had hit it hard multiple times. Bigger hammers help, mine was 32 oz dead blow but 48 would have been better. Don't be shy about it. Also I did use WD-40 and let it soak overnight. Alternately call the Avengers and get Thor to use either hammer :-)

    Im betting if the cylinder is older that this thing wouldnt work at all. A huge waste of money.

  • @cdavis625

    So this was somewhat effective on my Aeron: I had to soak the joint in wd40, then beat the shit out of it with this thing. At the end, I put a 36" pipe wrench on it and turned it out of the hole. It was in there VERY solidly.

      To be fair, this chair is 4+ years old and the cylinder was original.

    I would like to use this tool on my Haworth X99, but the cylinder seems to have seized at the lowest position. I can't get it to move up or down (and barely to rotate). I only have 3/4" of clearance between the lift mechanism and the cylinder hub, so I can't even fit a pipe wrench in there. I tried popping off the clip and washer at the bottom of the column, but the chair base doesn't budge. Any ideas?

    • @swivelchairparts
      @swivelchairparts  8 лет назад

      The chair base has to come off.Try harder. Support base near center upsidedown & hammer the column out. Take to auto repair that has a press to push it out.

    • @swivelchairparts
      @swivelchairparts  8 лет назад

      With the clip, washer off the leg base might need twisting and turning while pulling in order to remove it. IF you remove it, it will give you plenty of space for a wrench.
      Good luck.
