i wish you could explain this without the use of added music , it adds nothing of value, its distracting
Boy you're not kidding - unnecessary and, whatever was playing was particularly annoying.
you can just mute the video and read the captions...
Unfortunately this gas cylinder on Amazon is no longer "around $15" today's price is $23.99... but still way cheaper than a new chair! Thanks for sharing the know-how!!!
Yeah a lot of things are more expensive now. Thx for watching!
Before I replace the cylinder, on my chair, it feels as though the lever is not connected to anything at all. Could this be a non-cylinder issue?
Likely the cylinder
@@thebumpchannel It was the cylinder. Replaced and working like new! Thanks.
@@gerryc3112 awesome
First, they are not universal. You better measure the body length before you order (here is a video how: ruclips.net/video/7Hvb4gdI_j0/видео.html). Second, the black part is not actually the cylinder, it's a casing for the outside part of the piston. The casing can have different diameters, so it's not smart to remove it from the chair's base. Moreover, reusing the existing casing makes the replacement much easier. You don't need a mallet or anything, just remove a small clip at the bottom of the casing, and it will come off.
Great info. Thx!
Thanks, I just saved my favorite chair! Your technique worked fine, with one change. The rubber mallet didn't remove the base. I've had the chair for about 10 years, so everything was pretty well seated. So I turned the chair upside down, and tapped the cylinder with a regular hammer, using a block of wood in between to spread the load. That worked great. I did have to sort of hang the chair, by putting the base on a couple of 2x4's that I had placed across two trash bins to hold them about 4ft. off the floor.
Awesome. Way to improvise. Glad to help!
I don't consider myself very knowledgeable nor talented fixing things. But this video hit the mark perfectly for me. I followed it to fix one of my office chairs, and found it rather simple and easy to accomplish. Thanks so much! 👍
I appreciate the comment! Thx for watching!
Do be warned, this will only work if your base is made of cheap plastic. Decent plastic or metal won't work. You'd need to remove a clip at the bottom of the base to remove it, and then dethatch the gas cylinder from there.
Thx for the tip and thx for watching!
Great video and instructions! Thank you,so much! We all need to wake up to the waste of our disposable culture and return to repairing rather than replacing. I'm reupolstering and replacing the hydraulic lift, too. Thanks to you for helping to make it possible.
Glad to help! Good luck with the repairs!
Simple, to the point and you helped me salvage my chair. Thanks a bunch for this great video!
Glad it helped! Appreciate the comment!
I need to place my gas lift cylinder...THANKS!!!! This was very helpful!
Glad to help. Hope yours went smoothly!
@@thebumpchannel what happened if the gas lift pole fell all the way down and the chair won’t go up nor down. Like my chair’s gas lift fell all the way down and it’s hard to move my chair. Can you help me please!
Sounds like cylinder needs replaced.
Thank you so much for this video! My chair has been sinking for months and it's been driving me crazy! Your instructions were perfect and easy to follow. Thank you!!!
Glad it helped!
You said fix from sinking chair. You showed how to take it apart. I thought you were going to show how to get it back working or refill the Cylinder
You fix by replacing the worn cylinder
Thank you for making this! I bought the replacement part but I cannot, for the life of me, get the chair base off. Any suggestions?
It can be a pain? Any luck?
My current chair isn't even a year old and the hydraulic is already completely fucked. Thanks for your guide, I'm about to leave a scathing review on my terrible chair's Amazon page.
Oh what a surprise, the chair isn't listed any more. I have fallen for yet another Amazon scam.
Thx for watching and thanks for the comment! Good luck!
4 hours later, much WD40, a mallet and a piece of wood and I still can’t separate the parts 🤦♀️
that stink. good luck. try penetrating oil
I have that exact chair! I've had it for over 10 years now and reupholstered and replaced the casters. I'm looking to replace the entire chair but having difficulty finding it online. Can you tell me where you got the chair and what model if you can find it? Thanks!
Pretty sure I just picked it up a one of the big box retailers like Office Depot
I looked at this video several times..I must have missed something...seemed like the cylinder was removed and put back..without doing anything to it...! How's that gonna help?
Cylinder was replaced with a new one. Thx for watching
You are best!, I have this problem for years. I have probably thrown out over 80 chairs, because I didn’t know that they could be fixed. Thank you, so so much.
You are welcome! Glad to help! Thx for the comment.
that's a lotta chairs my god !
@@ilovepineapple6393 Yeah, 80 chairs?? Holy hell, I have my chair for more than 10 years now and only recently this problem started being somewhat frequent, it sinks once in a few days so I'm considering trying to fix it.
Yeah replacing the cylinder is really economical and a good fix for a year or two. You don't even have to be that careful with the old cylinder considering we are just going to get rid of it.
Pls HELP me! My chair was making noise and didn't have sinking problem so I sprayed wd40 everywhere. Now my chair started to sink but just 1-2 inch (3-5cm) it has been few days still didn't change.
Not sure why that would cause to sink. Sounds like cylinder is leaking now.
@@thebumpchannel there is nothing leaking though. is there liquid inside them or gas. but if it was either of them why after 4 days still sinks just a little but not all the way down.
maybe it contains a solvent? and messed the piston.
He basically replaces it, I was looking for a way to fix the existing one rather than replace it.
Cheaper than a new chair. I believe you can service the cylinder based on the the cylinder itself.
I'm on the pipe wrench part. . . It's not working. I even put a 5 ft breaker bar on the pipe wrench handle, and applied the force of god to it. Something isn't right.
Good luck. I would let the liquid wrench soak and reapply. Thx for watching and thanks for the comment!
Thatn you for getting to the point quickly and NOT making me listen to a bunch of sekf promotions amd meaningless deiatls.
Appreciate the comment! Thx for watching!
Pipe wrench! Perfect tool for the job! Thanks for sharing!
Happy to help. Love the feedback! Thanks for the comment!
What if you don't have a pipe wrench?
Great video. Going to try and save my chair. So am I assuming correctly that end of the cylinder that is connected to the chair itself is press-fit into place as well as the other end?
Yes its just a press fit. Good luck!
Ridiculous ‘music’ while trying to listen to directions. Please remove the sounds that may be music.
Haha. Was trying to drown out the awful echoing audio. Thx for the comment!
If you don't need the height adjustment you can do the simple elegant fix I made: ruclips.net/video/5fS7NQbLAlA/видео.html

i cant believe there is no retaining pin or screw this is crazy
also i just lowered my desk all the way and my arms line up the same on my mouse and keyboard again

Liquid wrench was a good idea. Thanks!
You bet! Glad you enjoyed it and appreciate the comment!
Sweet. Didnt know the cylinders were universal. Good to know.
Thx for watching!
My chair sinks once in a while. Might have to replace the cylinder
Same. It's worse and more frequent over time. Beyond annoying, especially if you are tall.
Any idea how to make the cylinder always be extended to it's max length? Like pouring some kind of glue on to it or plumbers putty or something? I never need it to lowered...like ever. I know next to nothing about gas cylinders though.
Cut a piece of pvc. Several videos show that trick
@@thebumpchannel Thank you! I wouldn't have thought of that, but it makes sense!
Sorry. The video didn't come close to helping me at all. No matter how much I tried - or which way I tried (ccwise & cwise) the top end of the gas cylinder would not shift. Nor could I knock the base off easily - I had to take the spring clip out of the end and tap it off that way ... Now I have to find a professional someone who can separate the gas cylinder shaft from the seat base!! 😖Oh well ...such is life with all of its best intentions 😵💫
Sorry to hear...good luck!
@@thebumpchannel Thnx, Bump. Took me a while to work out how to separate the piston shaft from the seat mounting ... so I had two bits to "fix" - the piston casing still in the feet and the piston shaft from the seat mounting. I unscrewed the seat mounting completely from the seat, but try as I might I could not dislodge the piston shaft from the fitting - tried all kinds of wrenches, a small vice and even heat = nada.
In the end, I took it to a car repair shop who had a big vice - they clamped it up solidly and hit it with a lump hammer just a couple of times ... and off it came!! Yaaaayy!!
I separated the piston shaft from the feet by balancing the piston shaft end on a block of wood and tapping it with a wooden drift and finally it too came away.
Popped in the new piston and here I am writing to you on a chair that has been repurposed for just $15.93 (£11.95) as opposed to £100+ ($133) minimum!! For a desk chair that is nowhere near as good as the one that I have just repaired!
Just wanted to say that your video gave me the knowledge and the confidence I needed to be able to do the job. Thanks to you, I knew what I had to do and in the end, together, we got it done and I am very grateful to you for that. Keep up the good work on youTube ... we lesser mortals sure need your knowledge!! 👍😊 And thanks again. 🥳
@@johnbeavis5027 awesome! Thx for the update.
Tried this. Cracked the bottom of the chair where the piston attaches trying to get the old cylinder out. Oh well.
Sorry to hear that.
@@thebumpchannel Cheap metal. I also should have waited with the Liquid Wrench longer than I did before I started torqueing on it with a pipe wrench.
I appreciate your video. Like you, I'd rather fix before replacement. But they make these things so cheap nowadays. I still have the Ethan Allen desk chair from my youth over 50 yrs ago....still going strong but uncomfortable as heck.
Thanks again!
Tried everything suggested but still no luck getting the cylinder to part company with the chair, I think you have to be a Sumo wrestler or something to have the necessary strength. Thanks anyway.
Sorry to hear that. May try adding some additional leverage/length to the plumbers wrench.
@@thebumpchannel Thanks for your reply. I managed to remove the cylinder by taking your advice about using WD40 and leaving it for 30 minutes then I used a heavy hammer to hit it all around the base of the cylinder then the plumber's wrench turned straight away and it came off and the rest was easy. Thanks for your help.
@@glendawinston9252 awesome glad it worked
I am having issues with getting the wheel part off the cylinder... Mine is chrome silver not plastic so.... I put some lubricant on it and will let that sit for a bit.. and try again later.

What is the purpose of the damn music. Just frustrating to try to tune out the music and hear what is being said. Geez!
Literally the exact chair I have, and the first video in the search results. Excellent detail. Thank you!!
Awesome! Thank you for the comment and good luck with the repair!
Your poor flooring
Haha. That base did go flying off there. Luckily it's cheap and lightweight...kids do way more damage, lol
Man I was so desperated with my dxracer Tank series. 4 years no problem but suddenly he would sink. I had another hydraulic but the old one wouldnt go out. WD40 helped. Thanks alot from Germany !

This was great and will save my daughter a couple bucks on a new chair! We also have a hydraulic cylinder that is stuck in the UP position and can't be manually put back into place. Any suggestions?
Thx for comment. Removal should work just the same.

Got some liquid wrench on it
Thanks! This helped a bunch custom heavy duty all metal base chair worked the same way.... just needed a lil persuasion to come off
Awesome! Glad it helped. Thx for the comment!
he used a new cylinder right? not the same one?
Yes. Link is in video description.
Thank you, that was very helpful! I was more brutal, just whacked it with a small sledge hammer, no lubricant 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Nice! Glad to help. My base is cheap plastic.. would be afraid of breaking
I have a chair, made circa 1978 that my 400pound+ son broke the spider base. I got the bottom of the cylinder out of the 'dead' spider without too much trouble. However, the top of the cylinder in the tilt mechanism of the seat has defied removal. I have used Blaster penetrating oil, WD-40 Penetrating oil, applied a propane torch to the thing, put it in a big bench vice and attacked it from above with both penetrating oil sprays and a punch whacked with a 2.5 pound sledge. Sprayed the expletive deleted thing with AeroKroil super bearing removal hyper penetrating oil all, put a 4 ft cheater on my monkey wrench and nothing as caused the upper end of the cylinder to budge a micron.
Having said all that, your video is pretty good. Sometimes you have to remove the clip from the cylinder base, suspend the thing in a big machinist's vice and whack the hell out of the bottom of the cylinder to get it to release. Let your penetrating oil/fluid set over night if you have to. As the saying goes: Use a bigger hammer. I like the 2.5 pound mini-Mjollnir myself to "educate" things.
If you have any ideas on how to break loose the top of my gas cylinder I'd appreciate it.
Sounds like you given it a good try. I would keep applying the penetrating oil over a couple days and use a big plumbers wrench with a breaker bar for extra leverage.
@@thebumpchannel Thanks. I'll look into a bigger wrench (and hammer).
I've got the same problem as you Kurt. The top of the cylinder is giving me fits. My next step is going to upgrade from WD40 to Blaster penetrating oil. If that doesn't work I'm getting out the propane torch. Wish me luck.
@@theBRT1955 I gave up and just replaced the frame and cylinder. Torched the thing, used Aerokroil pentrating oil over several days, worked up to a 4 ft cheater on the pipe wrench. It never budged a micron. Bought a length of quarter inch thick 3" wide steel and made a fitting to attach the seat back rest to the new seat base. I got whooped by the stuck cylinder, but the chair is now useable and adjustable. Good luck with your stubborn 'beastie'.
@@SteinerHaus after 4 or 5 doses of PB Blaster over a period of about three weeks and with the help of my son (who has squat lifted 405 -just to paint the picture for you), we finally achieved success. It was really just waiting for the chemical to seep in and do its work. But like your experience, the first few times we tried, it didn't budge "a micron". So, the chair is back up in my happy wife's office and all's well. Thanks for your wishes of good luck - that may have helped more than either of us know. Have a great day!
Wow! Thank you. I was about to go to Staples to get a new chair and saw this video. Great upload. It is no frills, simple and to the point and really helpful. Very much appreciated.

@@thebumpchannel great video btw. I was able to fix my chair after learning some stuff from your video.
@@lorddevil863 Awesome I appreciate the feedback!
I watched one vide just to refresh my mind. I did one of these 15 -20 years ago and was hoping my memory worked. As i worked on the chair several other videos came up. This was the first that recommended spraying with a lubricant, and we all know WD40 is the spray of most. I'd already done that, but this was the first of about four videos that suggested the lubricant. That was the key to making the job easier!
Glad it helped! Thanks for the comment!

the 30 minutes wait is the key. or wait to a clear view of lubricant drip to the paper towel below.
Spot on. Letting the lubricant get in there frees it up. Thx for the comment.
The oil is a great idea and knowing how long to leave it, Thank you
You bet! Please give the video a thumbs up! It really helps me out!
Heaven forbid the companies who make the chairs build something the dish fail inside a year...
Failed in 1YR? That's rough. Got about 5 out of mine, but don't use the chair every day though. Just nights and weekends, for home office.
Thanks for video. My problem is that the chair sinks OK but because of where I use it I want it to stay in the sunk position. I've tried moving one of the levers up and down but to no effect. There is a second handle but it just seems stuck. There is also a screw turn device - tried screwing this both ways but to no effect also. Do you have any suggestion?
Once in the lowered position it should not rise on its own without activating the gas cylinder release and taking weight off of the chair. It should stay lowered.
The music is very distracting
Sorry. Thx for watching

Reinstalling is not fixing

Was going to buy a new chair. you saved me like $150+. Apreciate it bud.
No problem. Thx for watching and I appreciate the comment!
That's funny man. I'd been thinking about doing it. Unfortunately even a few months of use has basically friction welded the damn thing together. I've had the piston replaced like 3 times. They only last a month before they begin to fail. Kinda want to see if i can seal it in the highest position so it cant move down anymore. See, my base is made of steel. So it really seizes up and gets stuck. I think i had to hammer on mine for a good 40 minutes last time I had to remove it.
Yeah you may want to just add a piece of PVC to keep extended. Several videos on that out there. The cylinders should last years, not months.
@@thebumpchannel Good suggestion. I did the same thing. But instead of PVC, I used a Steel Pipe Socket.
Gonna give it a try

I am looking forward to trying this. I have several of this type of chair in my home. Two of which I bought from Office Depot/Office Max over 25 years ago. They are very comfortable. However, they started sinking. Secondly, on the black one, the one I use much more often, the seat loosened from the pneumatic cylinder dumping me, a senior citizen to the floor. The chair itself is in prime condition. I see no compelling reason why it cannot be repaired. Most of the new office chairs I see today are just plain junk. I would rather attempt a repair than replace an otherwise perfectly good chair.
Good luck with repairs! Thx for watching and thx for the comment!
