As a major fan of the source material, this movie hit everything I wanted from a Doctor Sleep adaptation and improved upon what I disliked about The Shining adaptation, that movie feels full of cold cynicism whereas the book is a Shakespearean ghost tragedy, Flanagan somehow toes the line between both with characters and moments I’m never gonna forget.
Probably the best King adaptation of modern day.

The recast Halloran was amazing. So damn good. We did basically go on a guided tour of the overlook for the third act but it felt earned at least. It almost felt like an action movie at some points which may have been more of a detriment if I didn't buy the character motivations as much as I did. Great great movie. Pulled it off like blade runner 2049

I thought it was great, a touch long, but the ideas were fascinating, and everything was well done. Kate the Hat was amazing.
      Spoilers>
My biggest problem was the hunters didn't feel as threatening after Abra kicked Kate's arse. I felt she should have struggle more, barely escaping, to add more tension later on. Danny said he didn't think they could take Kate, but Abra basically did it first try, not even knowing what she was doing. I did wonder if Abra would become the bad guy at the end, as she seemed quite unaffected by some of the things she did. Overall, I enjoyed it, it was a worthy sequel, but I think it could have been even better.

@@bigneon_glitter He was incredible. My companion wasn't sure if it was the same guy (she'd only seen the Shining a couple of times, and didn't know who Scatman was). I did think it would have been awesome if they could have got Jack Nicholson to ADR his character's lines, as Henry Thomas' voice just lacked a little something. Still, they did a great job of getting replacements for the Shining's cast.

I just finished watching Doctor Sleep. Loved it. Ive read the novel and the movie ends on a different note. But its more of what King wanted the end of Kubrick's Shining movie to be.
Dont watch Dark Fate. Its basically T1 and T2 storyline. It wanted to use the past movies to create a fresh storyline. But its not fresh! Same ol thing.
Doctor Sleep gets it right. You can hearken back to an original classic. But dont have the same storyline. Just use bits and pieces here and there.

The gold room scene is so good. The camera angle makes it so believable. Ewan knocked it out. I think I love this movie more than Kubricks. I felt so affected by the many things these characters go through and also some revisit horrible traumas. Flanagan really makes you feel sad for characters who are in a horror setting.

  • @Thewhitequeen0

I feel like people constantly misunderstand King when it comes to what issues he had with the Shining, but what's funny is that this movie (based on his words) delivers on what he felt Kubrick's Shining didn't, which is the emotion. When you look past the spectacle of 'psychics vs psychic vampires in a haunted house', there's actually a lot of emotional moments in the movie, especially when it comes to Danny's relationships with his parents. I even teared up near the end due to a certain scene he had with Wendy.

I wonder what would have happened if (spoilers) Danny drank the Whiskey. Kinda wanted to see him embody Jack and take over...even though he basically did. Somehow...I think him becoming so was unearned though. They just had a few too many cameos too many times at the end imo. Less is more. And him saying "Shine on" was not just cheesy but kinda dumb. Why would she intentionally find others when they are most likely dangerous? She should just live her life out peacefully and smart...and become the ultimate lawyer or something.
I also disagree with the de-aging filter. I thought Carrie Fisher and Tarkin looked spot on, and I thought Will Smith did in Gemini Man trailers (gotta watch next), and Sarah/John Connor in Terminator Dark Fate, even though I wasn't convinced the new "John Connor" was the new savior simply by saying, "we need to fight back" in one flashfoward scene-Come on! They didn't even need to change Skynet since that was simply one possible future, but they did so just so the new lead can annoy us with her banther.

Ahhh nooooo, I really didn't enjoy it. Fair play to all involved, they did technically make a very good film but there's no getting around the fact that I can't abide Stephen King's writing. The only reason I like The Shining is because Kubrick threw much of it out. Really wanted to like it too.

Dan, seriously, read the book, as well. I read The Shining and Doctor Sleep back to back, and the sequel compliments the first book so well. The antagonists are fleshed out a lot, and they are very terrifying as villains. I personally think that the book Doctor Sleep is even better than The Shining (if The Shining is The Terminator, then Doctor Sleep is Terminator 2), and it explores the shining much more and gives it a good amount of lore.

in the book, the Overlook burns completely to the ground and there is some camping ground there now, where they go in the finale of Doctor Sleep. They explain that the spirits are still there, as it was not actually the hotel that was haunted. It makes sense to have the movie back at the hotel, since it puts more emphasis on the past traumas he needs to address.

The Overlook and the ghosts from it feature very heavily in the book. But the big detraction is that the Overlook doesn't actually exist anymore in the book. It was leveled and there's like a campground on it. In the book they have to go back to where the hotel used to be, though. So it's just a matter of the hotel still standing that's the main difference.

  • @MrRomanweb
    @MrRomanweb 5 лет назад

Well, the Overlook was burned down in the original novel. In Dr. Sleep, there's a campground inhabited by the True Knot that's built on what used to be the Overlook. And that's where the final act takes place in the book. So in way, they do go back to the Overlook as its portrayed in the film Dr. Sleep.

I just saw the movie and I loved. Just wanted to say about the "member this" aspect of the 3rd act, I agree that he goes heavy on the call backs but since the movie is 2h30 long and considering all that came before I think it is deserved. We basically had a full, original and satisfying movie before that and the return to the hotel does feel appropriately weighty and meaningful because of the journey that preceded it. So I must say I really enjoyed all the call-backs because I was so invested in the story and the characters.

If you've read Doctor Sleep, they absolutely nailed the novel. I loved the movie. Other than the third act, which obviously has to be changed, it's about as close to the book as you could get... they excised a few of the plot elements for simplicity (like the measles infecting the True Knot), but it was so good. I actually wish it was 30 minutes longer to further expand on the True Knot, but I know that's just as a fan of the book... it would be hard for a non-reader to sit through the extra material, as the movie is already long.

Finally just saw Doctor Sleep and NOW I get what Dan was talking about with the third act paying tribute to things in The (BOOK) Shining that were missing from The (MOVIE) Shining. Rewatching this review after seeing the movie, and seeing Roth say the first half pays tribute to the book while the second half pays tribute to Kubrick's film I was thinking "What movie were you watching...?" The third act of Doctor Sleep is a fantastic homage to the themes and feelings Stephen King was trying to convey in the book that Stanley Kubrick completely left out of his movie.
I'm with Dan, as a fan of The Shining, both the book AND the movie, I REALLY enjoyed Doctor Sleep. 😁

I personally prefer Dan as a reviewer over Roth as he's able to consistently remain objective and unbiased when talking about a film. Roth sometimes states opinion as fact whereas Dan is always careful to reiterate that it's his personal opinion which inevitably may differ from others. I think it's probably just an issue with language usage.

Expected nothing from Doctor Sleep after the lame IT movies. Blown away. A proper & worthy sequel. One of the best films of the year & best King adaptations. Pleasant surprise.

Yes they do go back to the overlook in the book, However it burned down so it's where or almost where it stood....

I really enjoyed this film (saw it last night). I love when Roth and Dan review films. Carl Lumbly looks very much like Scatman Crothers. And yes, that Iowa death scene was brutal.

The Shining is a four star movie. Doctor Sleep is a three star movie. Love them both.

The overlook is gone in the book but the spot that it was built on is used by the true knot as their campground while they find there next victim

I've seen it as well and totally agree with their take. It really sucks you in, in a way that few movies do these days, has great characters and arcs, and actually adds emotional depth to the characters from The Shining movie in a way that feels natural. The villains were extremely interesting: almost like Pennywise, but instead of an alien demon who hunts due to his nature, they were developed human characters who actually CHOOSE to be like Pennywise, which I found much scarier. The pacing might be a bit slow for some, but it's a sequel to the Shining, so you should know what you're getting into. Definitely an extremely well-crafted movie on many different levels.

You said it bro! Finally a movie that advances in a new direction with new characters but not at the detriment of the old ones à la "The Last Jedi" and the last Terminator. Danny and Abra's relationship is cool. Danny does have a big role to play throughout! I do think though the final showdown could have been bigger because everything leading up to it is so intense and well thought out. SPOILERS !!!! I would have let more characters from the True Knot survive to the end to balance Finale at the :Overlook.

Wow! This movie sounds really good! Before it comes to my theater (it’s supposed to very soon) I’ll go watch Kubrick’s The Shining, which I’ve actually never seen.
