Forget the past, kill it if you have to... that was the Taliban and ISIS' motto when they were blowing up acheological sites in the Middle East and also the Godwinated One's when he was having books burned in 1930s Germany. So if you are saying that, then you might want to think about what company that puts you in. Embrace the past, celebrate it, and work with its legacy to build on it.
IcyScythe because lots of people will see it regardless. Sometimes Disney just needs to take the creative approach, spend more time and effort to make better movies. Its a good thing Marvel and Kevin Figie were already making the MCU when Disney bought it. Otherwise it would be as incoherent as this trilogy.
I think there was a story in the news in late 2017 where JJ said he was going to be pitching his Episode 9 to Lucasfilm. If there had been a plan for this trilogy that meeting would not need to happen.
“Kill the past!” For the love of Space Jesus, it was the villain who said that! And he couldn’t let go of the past. As soon as he saw Luke, he dropped the ball for a tactical win because he could’t let go of the past. Let the past inform, but don’t be beholden to it.
I feel like The Mandalorian has done a good job of building characters... I mean, I feel more connected to a guy in a helmet whose face the audience hasnt seen yet, than I do with any of these characters from these new films.
Couldn't have said it better. The last two movies didn't seem to be heading anywhere nor have any general theme so I don't have any expectations for this one.
No character development? Really? These are far from perfect films but I 💯 was invested in these characters. JJ did a great job of doing that with force awakens for me. I really enjoyed this film. It was fun. Basically only issue is that JJ should have done whole thing so it was more consistent.
A half hour non spoiler review?!? Dan stated his opinion so strongly and to the point, after Roth giving a nuanced long train of thought, I just laughed out loud.
So basically they should’ve just let JJ Abrams make the entire trilogy. Regardless of it being bad or not this way it would’ve at least been connected somewhat
Haven’t seen this yet so I will reserve judgment , but from the little I’ve heard so far the census so far appears to be what I was most concerned about going in .
milo bans I don’t know what you were concerned about of course, but I know what I was concerned about among with most of people I know and.... yep. “Yikes” pretty much sums it up.
The RUclips algorithm just recommended this show and I couldn't be happier. I've never heard of these guys but I'm def. going to subscribe. They have really good chemistry (but you all already know that). Glad to be here to watch their reviews.
this triliogy felt like the game of telephone. Kathleen Kennedy tells a story to JJ Abrams and he makes Force Awakens, then it goes to Rian Johnson where you get Last Jedi. Once JJ Abrams gets the Last Jedi, he's got to decide what to do with it.
TLJ was an objectively horrible film that split the fan base and which TROS will thankfully retcon. It will make Luke’s behavior more understandable. Only the predictable societal malcontents liked it, because - like them - it was inherently subversive and destructive in nature. It seems the subversive malcontents like these reviewers didn’t like it because it was actually Star Wars and not a nihilistic revelatory exposition of personal disenchantment like TLJ was. Just about every reviewer you read who hates the finale loved TLJ. This is good news.
No you are right. I haven't seen TROS but I like TFA and TLJ. I am a sequel trilogy fan but I completely agree with you. It's very clear Disney didn't have a 3 movie plan and it suffers because of it. These movies are good to me individually but as a whole story.... It's a mess!
@@BlackLightning47 - At the end of the day, I knew the flaws with TFA. The Last Jedi destroyed every narrative thread it could. For no purpose other than to do it. After hearing about Papa Palps coming back...I just have one question. So Anakin didn't bring balance to the force? I guess the first SIX movies were just subverting our expectations too? For forty years? I am sorry, they keep saying this is a nine chapter story. If that is the case, I already would have taken the book series to the Salvation Army donation center. I hope the new one brings you joy and a satisfying ending to the new trilogy. I have zero hope that this will accomplish anything other than to destroy even more of the established story to stroke our nostalgia for more money. To be honest, I am torn on whether I will even bother seeing it at the 5 dollar Saturday morning cinema. Have a good one sir.
@@Possiblyabandaid I honestly don't fault you for this. I'm actually kinda nervous and not excited about Episode 9 either. It's a mess as I said. TFA and TLJ are basically two different Star Wars films. That's what happens when you get two VERY different directors for a 3 part story. Individually I think they are decent stories. But I understand the hate for them. Again as a whole it's bad. Really bad. And from what I hear about TROS it's gonna be worse.
@@Capt.Schlieffen Honestly it's the performances. I'm a huge Adam Driver / Kylo Ren fan. I like his performance and character in this new trilogy. But I like everyone's performance in the movies. Luke and Rey were great. I will say they don't give some people time to develop and just be on screen tho. I would have like to see Finn more in TLJ. And they basically wasted him with that dumb Canto scene. I didn't like that. But the themes and story from a solo movie perspective is why I enjoy Last Jedi. It touched on some things about the Force and the lore that I liked. But again it's not a perfect movie.
And who's fault is that with all the hyperbolic negative backlash? Fans were so ready to rip the movie apart that anyone who liked the movie is according to them is a 'shill'. The trilogy was going along fine from Force Awakens, but now...
@@Laiser Lol no it wasn't. This movie was shit because the Last Jedi threw away what the Force Awakens was building towards. It's simple. Gotta love that ACTUAL shills like you will find any reason to blame the fans, instead of the actual people in charge.
@@Jealod24 The Mandalorian is doing just fine and has the exact same fanbase. So no, the random assholes on the internet didn't cause the movie to fail. The movie caused the movie to fail.
The Mandalorian shows how to do fan service and yet do satisfying storytelling. It could be the equivalent of two or three movies. Not coincidentally, the writer is Jon Favreau who had as much responsibility in starting the MCU as Kevin Feige. It is obvious that Favreau is a fan of Star Wars and understood what Star Wars fans wanted and yet was able go in new and satisfying directions. He understands character development and using special effects to support that development.
At the end of Last Jedi, Rey, a Star Wars fan that got inspired narratively and character wise by Luke, asks Luke not to lose hope. Luke retorts, look at fucking Kylo Ren, look at the toxicity of the Star Wars fan base. A fan base that bullied the kid from phantom menace out of acting because they didn’t like him. A fan base that sent death threats and bullied George Lucas. A fan base that bullied, through racism, Boyega and the Asian actress. A fan base that loses their collective shit over fucking Mediclorians (however it’s spelled). Luke has given up and regrets his legend for it has brought hate rather than hope and vitriol rather than love. Rey says no. Rey says, your legend made me. That little girl that loves dressing and swinging her lightsaber was her. The little girl that grew up and now other new young fans look up to. Rey convinces Luke that his legend is worth it and that it matters and that he should continue to live up for that legend. Luke agrees and makes himself a new legend. The movie ends with a boy, a nobody, looking up to the starts embracing the force and looking up for the day he inherits a new story. It’s the last Jedi perfect? No. Is it stupid at times? Yes. But it’s still one of the best Star Wars movies. It’s the movie the franchise deserved and it needed. The franchise was absurdly stale, and it did the same thing that COD and Assassins Creed continue to do: repeat and do nothing. You, “fans”, couldn’t resist to be idiots and bullies. Good job. Take a class and learn literature analysis, film studies, and writing cuz you clearly don’t know writing.
The Force Awakens - Meh, I felt nothing The Last Jedi - Meh, I felt nothing The Rise of Skywalker - I don't care already even before if I am going to see it. Jumanji wins again.
The thoroughness of this review without spoilers is a testament to the intellect and integrity of Dan and Roth. Two of the finest cultural analysts working in media today, no hyperbole. No joke.
just watch Blindwave absolutely loving it lol. (they are a yt channel that LOVES Star Wars to crazy degrees and will never be negative about anything about it)
In the past the studio had more influence, so when TFA and TLJ came out, upsetting the studio was an element some of them took in account specially the big ones, but after TLJ, and the really bad way LucasFilm KK address the backlash of TLJ made some YT channels to be more careful of blatantly shilling, so what we a seeing its what should have happened after TLJ a thoughtful critique
nikosvault Roadmap for the prequels was brilliant but the execution sucked. Had they used George’s ideas and let other directors/writers execute them it would’ve been the perfect storm...
Crazy because SJ and Collider both destroyed this movie and they are typically referred to as the "shill" reviewers. I guess it was REALLY REALLY that bad then.
@@conorleddy8085 i mean, when your opinion consistently lines up with someone elses and they have an opinion it is somewhat likely that it'll match up with your opinion. I think its pretty reasonable
I usually agree with Dan on movies. I respectfully disagree this time. I enjoyed it very much. Yes, it was a bit fan service at times. But I liked it. But we all like different things.
3:55 a multi-billion dollar franchise is not a place to have a meta “conversation.” This is not an art school thesis. Wtf was Disney thinking putting such different directors to make a mad-lip version of a trilogy??!!!
@@travisspazz1624 Seriously. I'm HOPING Dan is being hyperbolic... but he doesn't seem like the type to exaggerate. Guess I'll find out for myself this weekend!
Ok never mind. He qualified the statement-it’s not the worst in terms of DIALOGUE, but in terms of story. I still think that the first prequel is REALLY bad in terms of story structure/creative ideas AND in terms of dialogue. Second two are better in terms of story but the writing is TERRIBLE. And tonally they’re all a mess. It’s like politics but it’s for kids but it’s poop jokes but it’s pod racing but it’s...what again? Anyway.
NOMO FOMO sequels and prequels screw them both. The original trilogy is lightning in a bottle, trying to recapture that magic has been the greatest downfall.
For me The Last Jedi is worst. Rise of Skywalker doesn't make sense from the very beginning and that's because The Last Jedi departed from what was set in The Force Awakens...
Ironic, The Mandalorians did in fact have Wars in the Extended universe and won several battles. Especially, in the Old republic trilogy when Revan and the Jedi Order stopped the Mandalorians rampage
Konghiphop I liked The Last Jedi. I hated The Force Awakens. We were hyped with a super secretive script only to get a rehash of A New Hope? Disappointment doesn’t adequately describe what I felt while watching it in theaters.
Konghiphop the issue with these movies is too many damn characters to give everyone a story. Last Jedi’s flaw is the Finn/Rose mission. Initial saga is more focused.
I was going to go to sleep, but this review popped up and I can't resist watching a long, Dan and Roth review even if it's not necessarily a positive review. I love watching this duo talk about movies anytime.
These reviews are starting to sound a bit like Justice League to me. Overcompensation for previous movie's divisiveness and a lot of empty fanservice. Hopefully I will end up liking it tomorrow night, but I'm pessimistic at this point
I hope you're right. However, for all of its flaws BvS was still a watchable movie, TLJ is not. Justice League was actually a fairly decent movie, and I'm hoping the same for this.
"The same studio put out Avengers Endgame this year" Mmmh not really. Marvel Studios and Lucasfilm are different. Yes they are both under the Disney umbrella, but they are not Disney movie from a creative standpoint. Disney doesnt' hire cast, crew, writers and directors for MS and LF. People that work at MS and LF do. Sure they might have some common orders ("no smoking" "finish the saga") but creatively? They are on their own. Feige didn't manage anything for Star Wars and neither did KK for Marvel.
simonegreco - valid point. Overall though? The success or failure is ultimately on Disney. They are the distributor. Luckily the people (who know) will separate it but in the books? It’s the same studio as Endgame.
@@MichaelTerndrup I haven't seen TROS yet, and I don't think AE is bad Also your question is kinda stupid...two movies made by different people can both suck for indipendent reasons
@@Whizkidd2025 But distribution has nothing to do with the creative process. The just give some vague indications (sometimes), get the movies, release them and get the money. If they wanted to make them known as Disney movies they would put the Disney logo
I'm glad I watched this before seeing the movie. Probably helped my viewing experience greatly. Dan and Roth are easily my favorite reviewers to watch and listen to and I'm always delighted when they are both there for a review.
To be fair, Dan dislikes a lot of stuff that the average person can still enjoy. Jurassic World is my second favorite movie in that franchise. Fallen Kingdom is also my LEAST favorite movie in that franchise. Some movies are very well produced and simple, not a cinematic masterpiece, but very enjoyable. Fallen Kingdom does NOT follow the formula set out by Jurassic World either, that franchise actually shares a lot of the same problems as the new Star Wars trilogy. It'll be interesting to see what happens with JW3 and if the parallel continues to the end.
Ryan Kowalski You mean where characters A and D and together, with no sign of characters B and C, and no explanation why D is with A instead of with C, and in a location that means nothing to any of the characters, especially X and Y, but is only there because it’s significant to the audience? That final shot? Spoilers, I guess.
Had they chosen to keep Snoke alive and reveal him as Plageuis, I feel like the trilogy could have been much stronger, while simultaneously linking the entire saga in a more satisfying manner
"I can't imagine the pressure, of having to finish a trilogy, and satisfy the fans..." Nope, and neither can anyone at Disney. **Highfives George Lucus** Congratz George not only did you make 4billion dollars, but you managed to make the real fans of star wars, all love your prequal trilogy, because now there is something so much worse. I feel like this was planned.
I am sorry but... I tried rewatching the prequels recently. My God, they are AWFUL. Overly CGI’d that doesn’t age well. Horrible acting in front of endless green screens, over the top action, light Sabre duels that look like choreographed dance scenes, pod racing, jar jar, etc etc. I couldn’t finish a single one. They are horrible.
It's only pleasing everyone because nobody knows anything about it. Give it a 2 or 3 more seasons and people will start bitching about character arcs, lore, etc. Knowing this fanbase, that's almost certainly going to happen. But who knows, I could be wrong. Maybe Faverau can pull it off.

Yours is the second review I'm watching (I waited to first see the movie) and the one I watched before yours is a third the length which is literally the only reason it went first. this triliogy felt like the game of telephone. Kathleen Kennedy tells a story to JJ Abrams and he makes Force Awakens, then it goes to Rian Johnson where you get Last Jedi. Once JJ Abrams gets the Last Jedi, he's got to decide what to do with it.
Dan went straight to the point

GuzziHero same. Instant fan
Dan is OFFENDED by this movie and it’s hilarious
TLJ was an objectively horrible film that split the fan base and which TROS will thankfully retcon. It will make Luke’s behavior more understandable.
Only the predictable societal malcontents liked it, because - like them - it was inherently subversive and destructive in nature.
It seems the subversive malcontents like these reviewers didn’t like it because it was actually Star Wars and not a nihilistic revelatory exposition of personal disenchantment like TLJ was.
Just about every reviewer you read who hates the finale loved TLJ.
This is good news.
@B Sa You might say it's a bad Star Wars narrative. But a badly made movie? No.
Dan's offended, but not quite to the level Joe was with "Dark Phoenix" during that Honest Trailers Commentary.

They should have probably had a plan for the story instead of going in without one
Yes, a controversial statement, I know.
@@BlackLightning47 what do you like about TLJ? i just rewatched it for the 3rd time, it gets worse every time for me.

@@Jealod24 I wonder why... couldn't be that the Last Jedi reverted everything JJ planned... that can't be it.
@@Laiser Lol no it wasn't. This movie was shit because the Last Jedi threw away what the Force Awakens was building towards. It's simple. Gotta love that ACTUAL shills like you will find any reason to blame the fans, instead of the actual people in charge.

Sounds like GoT Season 8. Bad, bad fan service, story threads go nowhere, tone is messed up and an overall disappointment.
The Mandalorian shows how to do fan service and yet do satisfying storytelling. It could be the equivalent of two or three movies. Not coincidentally, the writer is
Jon Favreau who had as much responsibility in starting the MCU as Kevin Feige. It is obvious that Favreau is a fan of Star Wars and understood what Star Wars fans wanted and yet was able go in new and satisfying directions. He understands character development and using special effects to support that development.
Yes!
Wow a half an hour long review. Should be fun
Rian Johnson sent three main characters on a half-hour long trip to some casino world that had zero affect on the plot. That is all.
Yet he's regarded so "bold and different" lol that was trash
All to make some stupid point about capitalism. In a star wars movie
Roth did a lot of explaining for Mr. Rian Johnson

Because it's easier to criticize Star Wars after The Last Jedi
Yep.

George Lucas DID gave them a road map. Disney chose to ignore it.

"The same studio put out Avengers Endgame this year"
Mmmh not really.

Boom roasted.
"But the final shot of the movie was so good" is the main argument I'm hearing from reviewers who are giving the movie a pass.
Ryan Kowalski You mean where characters A and D and together, with no sign of characters B and C, and no explanation why D is with A instead of with C, and in a location that means nothing to any of the characters, especially X and Y, but is only there because it’s significant to the audience?
