  • In 1945, Japan launched thousands of hydrogen-filled balloons carrying bombs across the Pacific Ocean, hoping to cause damage and panic in the United States. One of these balloons landed in Box Elder County, Utah, where it was spotted by a rancher who called the sheriff. The sheriff, Warren Hyde, was a brave and bold cowboy who chased the balloon on foot and grabbed its ropes, risking his life to prevent it from exploding. He held on to the balloon for an hour until the FBI arrived and took it away for analysis. This is the incredible story of how a Utah sheriff stopped a Japanese balloon bomb attack with his bare hands.

I can picture the fear of the sheriff floating across the canyon.
