Model Behavior: Painting 1/6 Scale Portraits
HTML-код
- Опубликовано: 4 окт 2024
- One daunting aspect of modelmaking is the painting of figure heads and portraits. To get over our fear of ruining a sculpture, we mold and cast a batch of heads to work on. Kayte and Norm each take a sculpt and paint them in quick succession, learning from each practice attempt and refining their workflow.

Thanks for watching!
Been a professional commission painter in the hobby for a min now. Since like 2014. This is a pretty good, easy to understand tutorial for those who wanna try getting their feet wet. There’s a fair amount done wrong here, but there’s a lot that’s done right also. It just takes a lot of practice. Don’t feel discouraged if your first few attempts come out like crap. Like anything, repetition is key, and you won’t get good at anything unless you practice. People like myself have a job in this hobby because most give up too quickly, and then they pay someone like me to paint their stuff. There’s the talent, sure, yes, but I think if people were able to be more patient and understand the learning curve, they’d find they could do a good enough job at this stuff, and maybe even excel. You never know until you try 🤷♂️.
well said. Just discovered this video and your comment. Do you have other great resources online or on youtube to continue to study and learn skin tone painting methods?
please share a video ive always wanted. to see someone that actaully paints the figures we buy work.
A trick I tend to use in painting skin is from my CG work; prime with red.
That's the subsurface scattering colour of skin, and gives it a more natural and less plastic look to how it handles light.
Not sure exactly how well it translates into paint on an opaque surface, but I've gotten into the habit and it seems to come out alright.
Awesome episode, very helpful! Please bring Kayte back for more!
Damn, Norms final head actually looked good with all those subtle color changes in the skin well done he has improved a lot since the first painting series
That's not Norms head, that's the original head they tried to copy.
Finally came around to watch this after seeing catching up with the newer episodes. This was a great one with all of the trial & error documented.
Thanks Tested team!!! 👏🙏♥
I would love to see more of these. I hope you'll do more of these in the near future
Norms final is actually great! Great job!
What do you mean - the one head laying in front of the 4 heads on wooden sticks?! That's not Norms head. As she says at 31:40 that's the original head they tried to copy. Same with Jeff Bridges' head on the right.
Nice to see that the experimental process led to (what I understand to be) the conventional process, which is to start with a darker undertone and build up lihter colours on that. That process has the added benefit of getting all the dark colours in the crevices and corners, with lighter colours staying on the outer surfaces where you'd expect highlights.
Trying to nail the "correct" skin tone right off the bat leaves you with that flat dull appearance. Starting with a shade that's too dark and finishing with a shade that's too light gets that spectrum of depth that looks much better.
it's so great to see how Norm's painting has improved since the first videos with Frank.
I love this video!
It's so refreshing to watch people who actually know the correct techniques and rules for paint use.
You'd be surprised how much people don't know and yet so many RUclips people act like their giving instructions.
It's maddening.
I also enjoyed watching the air brush action. I've recently pulled mine out again, maybe I'll dabble in some character painting again. ♡♡
I would suggest using a dropper or pipette to get small amounts of paint. This is more controllable than pouring.
A good way to approach painting faces is using grey primer and using white paint and spray over the grey from the top on about a 45 degrees downward. that way you will get that muted tone in the shadows. I would then use a red/brown shadow color and spray from below. Then pick up your skin color and lightly spray over the whole thing. After that, take a fine brush use your shadow color to paint in the wrinkles and eye sockets and lips.
Easy way to paint a face with great results

That looks like something Tony Stark made to escape Alcatraz.
I started painting 1/6 heads around 6 years ago when I just couldn't find anyone who would paint a figure for me, and nowadays I not only take commissions and make it a small side gig, but I also teach people how to paint since I know a lot of people desperately wants to dip their toes into painting and never know where to start.
You’ll like this guy then ruclips.net/video/XRUFtcB8Q8E/видео.html
There's a lot of tiny holes in your castings. Try using baby powder in the moulds, it eliminates most of the bubbles on the surface!
I love your show myth busters now I found this OMG
I somehow missed this video while I was a premium member 🤔 but now I can watch for free at 2x 😁
When I have to paint fleshtones I reach for foundation (like the make up) that generally gets me right in the ball park, slap on a clear coat and start shading.
Great lesson/video but why not list the equipment and supplied used (for those of us who would like to give it a shot but have no idea where to start) in terms of what we need?
Im not sure why we keep watching him, when shes the one who is teaching and knows more what shes doing. What is the purpose of the video, are we supposed to be watching their faces talking or the painting? The camera is just sitting on them talking and the camera is more worried with trying to fit both of them in shot, Why? There are barely any close ups to what they are doing, which is the whole reason to why we are watching. You guys need more over the shoulder shots of what shes doing as shes doing it. Then occasionally check in with him if you want. Also the audio levels are way to low.
Justsomeguy I agree, at this point I usually click off videos when I see that Norm is in them because it seems like every video he’s in doesn’t actually focus on the project except for the ones Adam does where Norm isn’t the main one presenting. No offence to the guy but he seems so disingenuous and uninterested in what’s happening most of the time.
You DO NOT have to use lacquer paint for miniatures. ALWAYS acrylic all day long...
Why? According to whom? You paint however you want it, as long as the results are good.
I prime them in light gray or even white, and then it's all about VERY translucent layering (for a hot toys look, other people prefer more solid colors... and that's fine, but not me!). I use literally a drop of paint or two and fill the whole airbrush cup with water, then I spray that very lightly (almost nothing) cause you don't wan't any puddles, and then I use my hair dryer at hand very gently, and I repeat that over and over again so that I slowly build the color in the angle that I want (like usually the nose and forehead get less paint and the chin, bottom of the nose and eyes get more colored after spraying layers from below). The skin marks, moles and so on are added inbetween layers with the same 90% watery paint, only in red, blue, purple... It takes time but the end result is better since you go so slowly you are in control at all times and you're able to change the shade of color halfway through or sharpen the skin marks, or hide them, and so on. I'm not gonna say I get Hot Toys quality results but I'm getting pretty good! And once I'm finished, I coat the head with matt varnish spray and I put a bit of 2 parts epoxy resin glue on the eyes for deepness and brightness. Use an old brush for that and keep it for that specific task. You can use gloss varnish too but it doesn't give it as much deepness to their look cause varnish is more flat, more of a thin layer compared to a thicker layer of resin glue. For reference: ruclips.net/video/0_mkknAVBW4/видео.html although I think he uses tamiya paints (I find them too delicate for this but if you prefer them... they'll stick better than the watery vallejo mix).
The thumbnail looks like Kratos cake pops
Thumbnail pic reminded me of Kratos
Me dolio el alma :( al ver cuanta pintura se uso, para una superfcie tan pequeña, mas es un excelente video con muy buena tecnicas!!
That's how I am with painting I can't just have a straight color on a face or body it has to have different shades of colors to make the face look real at least my skin is diffrent tones in diffrent area's on my face.
Norm should watch Adam Savage’s Tested youtube channel. Adam went over adding the dark paint to the light paint to get the correct shade in a previous episode.
I love Bob Ross quotes.
I just watched a Citadel tutorial that taught me more than this .
I think some of these are from Trevor Grove, or at least they look very similar! His stuff is badass.
Now try painting the heads of wargaming miniatures. 😉
Yea 1/6 is no where near tiny. Try 15mm
I almost think bigger heads are harder because you can fit more detail into them, and it's closer to reality than something tiny, sure it might be harder to get the brush into the right places on miniatures but that's not what it's all about
@@rasmus9311 I think you're right. Not that I've painted anything larger than normal miniatures, but it is something that Ive been wanting to try for some time.
Toothpicks work great for eyes and lips
What’s with the. Trypophobic nightmare holes in the head sculpts?
I present to you, Tony Stark as a burn victim - Norm Chan. But seriously, I give him credit for trying, it's not my thing either. Kate and others make it look easy.
the audio is a bit low sadly
would you use a pink wash to get that red flush in the face ?
Was wondering if it was just me for the audio. I tend to keep my settings on the quiet side, but even with YT's volume at max could barely hear what Norm was saying half the time. Someone messed up the leveling for sure.
Love the video
She's GOOD!
It's only a mistake if you don't learn from it, otherwise it is a lesson.
Not to sound thirsty or anything, but she is adorable! Very informative video too. I learned alot. Thanks!
crawler, Can I use clear coat to protect from dirt and easy clean up?
I have a 1/6th scale Arnold Schwarzenegger (body and younger head) and a 1/6th female (with blond medium long hair) both over silicone body with posable metal skeleton and some stands and weapons for posing them for pics for reference material. It's gets you great shapes and shadows of muscles. You can pose them on all kinds of ways, make a photo, screw around with levels in Photoshop, print those, put on a lightbox, and draw over that.
I use 1/12th scale grey plastic ones to screw around with to see what pose i like most, and then i do it with the 1/6th scale for real, so they don't get bent too much and don't wear out as fast.
The 1/12th ones are cheap as fuck, the 1/6th one not so much.
I am planning to pose Arnold in close to his classic pose and then draw him as Colossus, which is gonna be a pain with all the chrome muscle shine.
But i don't want to think about doing this. I see those heads, it's not easy.
I paint Warhammer 40K miniatures, including Forge World stuff, but not at that level, and for bigger stuff i do use an airbrush with loads of masking tape for digital camo print and fading hexagons for a stealth effect etc.
But as much as possible, i will give them all helmets. Because not having helmets doesn't make sense and it's easier to paint :D
i looked on hot toys and they dont sell head scuplts alone. ebay does but i dont know witch vender is good to buy from. Also if your serais about painting skin tones and characters well id consider buying the book PYGMALION while it seems the book mostly teaches to paint female models the techniques are next level. Am I the only one who cant hear Norm through the mike in this video?
Man those are better then hot toys.
Mic volume levels too low. What's with the black speckling on some of the heads-
PageMonster those are bubbles in the resin; when they mix it they introduce bubble
those are huge i biggest scale i have is 28mm most of what i paint is in 15mm
I have never been so early to anything!!!
good morning, sorry in this video what paint brand the lady uses to paint the heads, thanks
8:39 Anyone else think hand-painted Robert Downey Jr. looks like David Bowie?
Sort of.
I'd love to know where they got the tamiya lacquer paints? As far as I know the usual U.S supply lines for Asian hobby supplies don't sell them yet.
You can find them on amazon no problem
Great technique Vid... I wish you both would name the colors that youre using, AS you use them. "This is Sunburn tan for my first coat of flesh" etc.. She is just zipping along with some cool colors but not saying what those specific colors are. That's kinda important... Just sayin.
Norm, "What does skin look like?!"
Me, "Well that ain't it Norm, that ain't it." 😂
Try using a green as the base tone for human skin.
Lower and lower volume.
Right? I'm taking the time to look through all my volume settings (system, monitor, etc.) thinking I have something going bad on me. Nope, ends up being this video.
Why isn’t this captioned? There’s obviously a lot of important information here but i can’t follow along.
Is it just my or does anybody else think Kayte reminds you of the actress that plays Caitlyn snow in the flash tv series?
I don't get how the manufacturer can make so nice detailed mouldings but totally fack them up like that?
I'd kill for a lesson from a painter like kayte.
I have experience with "tiny heads" 😢
@Frances S. Brotherton can you share the full link instead a shortlink please?
It’s Obadiah, I thought it was kratos
Seen the thumbnail and thought it was that scene in The walking dead.
My Boss also model maker
she is adorable :)
Jeff bridges head looks like kratos
Wanna paint tiny heads, try warhammer.
That’s not Jeff bridges that’s Triple H
save yourselves the hassle, they sell 1/6 unpainted resin heads for 10 bucks on eBay. I kitbash and paint my own heads in 1/6th for military figures...we are the Rodney Dangerfield's of the modeling world. we get no respect....lol.
Yeah first liker and second viewer
Does the thunbnail remind anyone else of the walking dead?
Too soon
I thought it was obdiah stain from iron man 1
DeuceDrop is this the new Rick Rolled🤔
do this in 1/35th scale then get back to me.For flesh tones you always go dark to light. theres a reason your heads look so monotone.
Hehe Rubber Downey Junior
so from all of this we have discovered that............. norm cant hold a paint brush!
Bro boooooooooooooorrrrrrriiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiinnnnnng!!!!!
Norm is almost ready for Kindergarten.
1:22 - So, instead of watching how those people do it right, we're going to watch how to do it badly? Yep, definitely "premium" content.
I keep trying to like Norm, but I don't understand why he's got his job. No artistic or technical talents I can see, and even less charisma. Meh.
She's not quite Kari Byron, but Kate is a bona fide cutie. Adam Savage always has adorable redheads around him.
They ended up looking like a 7 year old painted them.
