Refreshing to hear an honest opinion on any Seiko especially one that's supposed to be higher end. Even though I've been a fan of Seiko since my teens, I'm really underwhelmed by them recently. They have good designs, but when you get down to the details it all falls apart. Terrible feel on the bezels on their dive watches, bad bracelets and clasps, poor movement accuracy ratings, questionable QC, and the higher prices have really destroyed the value proposition as well.

@@dino3162 I'm curious which watch specifically you liked for the bezel because I kind of suspect that there's variability in the action even for the same model, which sort of goes back to the QC comment. So Seiko heard everyone saying how much they love on-the-fly, adjustable clasps, and someone at Seiko thought, "I know what the next trend will be!" Then they designed a clasp with 0 adjustments. Whoever made that decision needs to be fired.
I couldn’t agree more. I own about 8 Seiko watches and this one cost to most and it’s the only one I regret buying. The bracelet is just not substantial enough to support the watch head. Plus of all my Seikos, imagine the feeling I had when at the dealer, after purchasing the watch, I noticed the ever so slight misalignment of the dial!
The $2500 price on this watch makes zero Sense. For $2000 (or $1.5k street price) you can buy the Hamilton Intra-matic chrono in either manual wind or auto. Want an aviation inspired chrono? Check the Longines Avigation Bigeye out for less than this Seiko. A dress chrono? How about the Junghans Max Bill Chronoscope, a beautiful minimalist piece in the Bauhaus style. All of these watches have better movements out of Switzerland, better finishing and are more wearable, each at 40mm.
Another fantastic video, thank you. Pretty much sums up my feelings on many Seiko models; if you're going to stay to play in the above $1000 field, you better bring better bracelets and definitely more accurate movements. I myself will not settle for a -15,+25 a day movement, especially when many brands are doing better for less.
The Seiko Speedtimers are best in their Quartz versions. Half the price. More accurate than your Rolex. Less weight. Solar. Everyone knows the Speedtimer Quartz is what u get if want a great affordable chrono.

I've got a chrono with a 12-hour subdial, and will sometimes use it as you describe when I bring it to different time zones. It's a neat, underappreciated perk of 12-hour subdials (provided you have the patience and presence of mind to start it at exactly the right moment... which I usually don't.)
Love the honesty. This is truly how I’ve felt about almost all Seikos: cheap bracelets, poor movements, bad quality control, and awkward designs. This one is designed pretty well from a looks perspective, but for $2,500 you can get a Monta Oceanking or Skyquest Pepsi GMT. That’s insane.
@@GeniusInventor-dj5zc No way! You read my mind. Great minds… 😂 I forgot about the PRX Chrono, but yes, this is an even more affordable option. If we’re talking Tissot chronos, I love the looks of the Heritage 1973 and the Telemeter 1938. It’s crazy, but in just 2019, I picked up an Omega Speedmaster Professional “First Omega in Space”, used but in perfect condition, 3 years old with 2 years left on the warranty for only $2800, just $300 more than this. At that same time, Speedmaster Racings could be had for around $2300.
@@SlCKB0Y-sb1kg I saw your post too actually and you made very good points. I like the tissot herritage 1948 but I’ve heard mixed reviews on the movement. My favorite chronograph that ticks all the boxes for me that I’ve seen recently is the nivada chronosport 38mm which retails at $2380, a whole $100 cheaper than this seiko, and I believe the nivada chronosport blows this seiko out of the water and nobody really talks about it.
got my 39mm with the white dial on the 3-link "Bader" bracelet watch on MAMACOO 3 weeks ago and am loving it to pieces. Absolute fantastic watch that wears super comfortable on my 6.75 inch wrist. Chose the 3-link over the 5-link bracelet for the toolless quick adjustment. Way more comfortable than my Longines Hydroconquest 41 mm.
Everything you say about this watch is valid. I still liked the look of it enough to buy it, and it was my gateway drug into chronographs. Looking at it from the “I want a chronograph” angle, it was half the price of the next chronograph I liked. I don’t think I’ll keep it forever, but until a Tag Glassbox becomes more affordable to me, it will have a place in the collection. And yes, my oily arm has subdued the squeak.
I have an SRQ049 and I’m very happy with it. I think it’s a very fair value for the price. It’s well made, comfortable, I like the date location as it preserves the overall symmetry of the dial. It could use more power reserve, and they are generally more accurate than the specs. Money doesn’t go as far as it used to. To each his own.
I own the watch, got it pre-owned at 1900 and value for money at that price point is unmatched. The clasp, yep, it sucks, needs adjustments due to top heaviness, similar to my SLA023 (SLA023 gets a better fit though on bracelet). I put this one on a gray canvas aftermarket and it is perfect. "I bought a seiko for the bracelet", said by no one, ever. Everything else about this watch pre-owned is a score (never buy a Seiko new, just wait three months after release and save 30%). And that is the story of Seiko.... Don't knock it till you've tried it. Kind of like watching You're Terrific....
Please let this be the start of the You’re Terriffic Villain Arc. The people need high quality reviews that unceremoniously shit on overpriced poorly designed slop watches. 🙏
Seikos are THICK. Nearly all of them are hockey pucks, even for their simple movements. Yeah they're bulletproof, but they're not even any more accurate. This also goes for Grand Seiko.
Automatic chronograph seems like a tough combination to get right, just because of the size and weight. You can get significant reductions in size by going manual or quartz, solving some other problems, too...
The weight and the height of the watch was the things that I saw would be problems after I got past how good it looks. Hopefully they try again because it is such a great looking watch.
My favorite 2024 is the Prospex Limited Edition 1965 Recreation European Exclusive in Gradation Island Blue. The dial is stunning and the contrast when on a white strap is to die for. I will get my hands on one from MAMACOO
Thanks for this video, it convinced me to actually buy it because if THAT is what you are complaining about, then my worst fears dissipated. Another seiko banger.
I think thing that is not often mentioned about Seiko, is just how good they are with proportions. Even their weirdest designs never feel ‘off’ in one way or another. In my opinion, they’re as good as Rolex, Omega or any of their Swiss counterparts in this regard.
28,800 bph, 45 hour power reserve, vertical clutch and column wheel, the alternative is a valjoux 7750 or swiss equivalent that is a similar weight and thickness but likely costlier. The spec is +25 /-10 per day. As a watch reviewer did the example you have in person run at +25, +0 or -10 seconds? We can all read a website. What matters is how well it is regulated and performs in real life, not what the extreme mechanical tolerances are.
Yes!!! Many chronograph watches are top heavy, throwing off the entire wearing experience! Iam looking at you Longines! Will placing this watch on a leather strap help?
I've recently began my obsession as a watch collector. And i must say- out of all the luxury brands I've been researching, for me the MAMACOO's watches are the most intriguing.
For $2500, the shortcomings of this watch are inexcusable. It’s gorgeous, but … Zero microadjust? +25 seconds? Pins and collars? That loose, jangly bracelet? No thanks.
When the reviewer begins a video by saying how he loves the brand, you know what will happen next. (Great critical content. No bashing, just a good balance between factual and subjective informations. I appreciate that!)
Great video and points. I got rid of my Alpinist GMT due to its top heaviness/feel on the wrist. This watch looks like another prime example of Seiko charging too much for a watch that almost gets it right.
The dial on this one is not one bit better than the dials on the much cheaper solar versions. 2500? What a joke. And one more thing - a thickness of 14.6 mm is a lot even for an automatic chronograph. I won't even mention the bracelet. Seiko have lost their way several years ago and they are still wandering around in the dark. Hard pass.
Also adjusting the chronograph time while Setting the actual time is one of the most „it’s not a bug, it‘s a feature“ish things I have heard in a long time .. and I work in IT 😅
The Patek 5208 Grand Complication Minute Repeater Chronograph has the same quirk where hacking the seconds will also adjust the chrono time. Well, adjusting the time when the chrono is running - I don't believe it has hacking seconds.
2.5k for a Seiko?? Who is throwing their money away on these? It's unreal anybody is. 1k would be a more appropriate price and I'd still pick another brand!
The 8r48 does have a vertical clutch and a column wheel. I can see that the watch has a bad weight distribution and a bad bracelet, but the movement isn't that bad. Although the claimed accuracy is below average
Nivada recently came out with their chronosport 38mm with better finishing, bracelet, and movement retailing at $2,380, a whole $100+ cheaper than this seiko, and nobody is talking about it
Completely agree with this brand. Bought a seiko 5 GMT. Returned it the same day I put it on my wrist. Felt like cheap plastic on my wrist. Something you would find out of a cereal box promotion. For the price point of these watches, the quality and material is severely overvalued Look into Seikos sister brand ORIENT, amazing watches, elegant, amazing dials for over half the price
Own it, love it. Purchased it for much less than retail, and Seiko always inflates it’s daily accuracy - the example I have runs within +/- 5. Can attest to the top heaviness, but compared to the Marinemaster 300, this automatic Speedtimer is svelte.
It is a great looking watch, but way too big for my barely 6" wrists 😢. I do, however, have a vintage 36mm speedtimer with the 7a38 quartz movement. 😊 fingers crossed seiko will think about us smaller wrist enthusiasts when it comes to their higher end mechanical pieces 🤞
@@ms.bunniesarecute2287 Totally get that! My wrist is a bit above average, fortunately or not I still can’t decide?! I do really like the newer Pogue-inspired version, and the movement is fantastic.
I'd go so far as to say that the only Seiko automatic movements worth considering are the 4S15, 9S65, or the cheapest possible NH35 you can get off Aliexpress. Otherwise the 6R and 4R movements are all just upscaled 7S26's, seemingly with no attempt at improving accuracy, and not worth the awkward $500 - $2,000 price tag Seiko is asking. At that price I'd much rather get an ETA2824/SW200/Miyota9015 watch or go HAQ (which is the route I went). Go big (Grand Seiko) or go home (cheapest possible Aliexpress NH35 homage).
I really wish Seiko would put clasps with enough micro adjust in their watches. I have one of the cheaper speedtimers and the thing I like about it least is the two holes of micro adjust. That makes it very difficult to get a good fit with. That watch is stunning though, i know the specifications may not make up to the price, but at the end of the day watches are about design and that has a great design.
This mechanical chronograph movement is pale in comparison to that of the old and most reliable Seiko quartz 7T92 movement which will set you back 150 bucks. As a matter of fact, no other chronograph movement be it mechanical or quartz can match it.
It's so funny, despite your criticism, watching this video makes me want this watch. At a discount though. I just really like the look, and the weight and power reserve just aren't deal breakers for me.
I think the wearing experience might be a quirk of the movement design, I've tried on a Knot with the NE88 and it was very top heavy and bobbly. It could just be that watches with these movements need wider and better bracelets to just feel properly situated. As it stands, not a great amount of temptation for this one
I’m one of those that still likes it. I don’t care about chronometer accuracy so much or power reserve. That is a beautiful watch. Better looking then the Daytona.
Many of the negative aspects that you mention are in many of the new models of Seiko. I brought the accuracy issue to one of the sales persons of the boutique in Frankfurt and he was struggling to justify such a bad accuracy in a 2k+ watch. If you go Seiko, better go quartz.
@@YoureTerrific This is strange because my 903 cost me a bit under 3,000EUR. I agree that it's substantially higher than 2,500USD but nowhere to be 1,500USD higher.
That's a shame, because I very much like the watch aesthetically. It wasn't at the top of my list or anything though. I wish it was, because things like white Speedmasters and TAG Heuer Glassbox Carrera Skippers aren't sadly much more expensive. I appreciate the detailed review, as usual.
$2.5K is a lot for this. I'm not sure why Seiko is putting watches into this price bracket. Wouldn't it make sense for them to release something under Grand Seiko instead?
3:32 honestly all modern Seiko automatics are like this. The SARB033 that everyone likes - I had a SARB035 before and that thing was unbelievably (unacceptably) top heavy. I also had several vintage King Seikos and those are FAR more well-balanced and pleasant to wear on the wrist. This wouldn't be an issue except the comparable Hamiltons Khaki or Tissot Gentleman or any other generic Swatch group automatic watch at that price with a superior ETA2824 or Powermatic 80 are way more balanced on the wrist.
I wanted to like this but the overall dimensions are just too large for my liking, I went with the microbrand Pitzmann III which uses the same 8r48 Seiko movement and very happy with it 👍🏽
This is the pitfall of reasonably priced chronographs, where you typically pay extra for that chronograph functionality, as it means the watch isnt cheap but still has the corner cutting of a cheap watch. And thats before you look at servicing costs, where Sea-Gull powered watches its easy to just replace the movement and luxury watches its worth paying for the service, this mid-category falls between the two ends - too expensive for a quick fix and not expensive enough to be worth the cost to service. Its one reason I only own one automatic chronograph.....
I absolutely love watches, the high end watch brands are out of my budget but the MAMACOO has literally an almost duplicate of every single watch on the market . Always a great but no matter your budget.
Great video, but the 8R48/NE88 movement doesn't deserve to be put down that way. It's a great modern movement even when compared with other more expensive automatic chronograph movements out there. It is one of the few modern automatic chronograph movements that are designed from the ground up. It has great spec, thin/small profile, good reliability, and a low price. It is a much needed competitor for the 7750/SW510 a at a very competitive price level.
+25/-15 secs a day at the $3k price point is genuinely laughable
My £20 Casio is objectively far, far superior!
And subjectively better looking too haha.

Seiko have lost their way several years ago and they are still wandering around in the dark. Hard pass.
Also adjusting the chronograph time while Setting the actual time is one of the most „it’s not a bug, it‘s a feature“ish things I have heard in a long time .. and I work in IT 😅
I like the watch I got from MAMACOO. That rubber strap combo looks really cool! Been wearing it since last year and love every minute of it.
The Patek 5208 Grand Complication Minute Repeater Chronograph has the same quirk where hacking the seconds will also adjust the chrono time. Well, adjusting the time when the chrono is running - I don't believe it has hacking seconds.
AMZWATCH has set a new standard for replica watches. Their craftsmanship is impeccable. Its hard to tell the difference from the originals
2.5k for a Seiko?? Who is throwing their money away on these? It's unreal anybody is. 1k would be a more appropriate price and I'd still pick another brand!
Peasant
There are Seikos at this price that I do recommend. The older Marinemaster, for example.
Me, I’d save up a little more money and just invest in a grand seiko at that point with 2.5K.
not my cup of tea, but if you can get a discount (20%) i think its worth it
The 8r48 does have a vertical clutch and a column wheel. I can see that the watch has a bad weight distribution and a bad bracelet, but the movement isn't that bad.
Although the claimed accuracy is below average
The dial is terrific! Make this in quartz, slim out the case and sell it for $1000. I'd buy two.
Yo do realize that mech a quartz mov costs $20?
Nivada recently came out with their chronosport 38mm with better finishing, bracelet, and movement retailing at $2,380, a whole $100+ cheaper than this seiko, and nobody is talking about it
Completely agree with this brand. Bought a seiko 5 GMT. Returned it the same day I put it on my wrist. Felt like cheap plastic on my wrist. Something you would find out of a cereal box promotion. For the price point of these watches, the quality and material is severely overvalued
Look into Seikos sister brand ORIENT, amazing watches, elegant, amazing dials for over half the price
It is very attractive though. Perhaps a nice rubber or leather rally style strap would hold it in place better.
“The price you pay for being poor” I don’t know many poor people who walk around with a 2500 dollar watch on.
Thanks. Good stuff as always. What alternative would you consider at the same/similar price point?
New release longines
I THOUGHT you were going to say when you hack the time while running the chronograph you can actually time something in the future. But you didn't.
I have never owned a watch on a bracelet. Straps are where it’s at. So much better looking
I do not enjoy oysters (except the perpetual kind), but I effing love chronographs with color-coded chrono hands!
Seiko needs a reality check with these prices.
Many of the negative aspects that you mention are in many of the new models of Seiko. I brought the accuracy issue to one of the sales persons of the boutique in Frankfurt and he was struggling to justify such a bad accuracy in a 2k+ watch. If you go Seiko, better go quartz.
Agree 100%, especially when a Sinn 903 St II can be had at roughly the same price.
I see those at $1,500 more.
@@YoureTerrific This is strange because my 903 cost me a bit under 3,000EUR. I agree that it's substantially higher than 2,500USD but nowhere to be 1,500USD higher.
Lol, not anymore.
The accuracy is bad, especially for the price
$2.5K is a lot for this. I'm not sure why Seiko is putting watches into this price bracket. Wouldn't it make sense for them to release something under Grand Seiko instead?
Nice transition at 5:27. What’s your wrist size again?
3:32 honestly all modern Seiko automatics are like this. The SARB033 that everyone likes - I had a SARB035 before and that thing was unbelievably (unacceptably) top heavy. I also had several vintage King Seikos and those are FAR more well-balanced and pleasant to wear on the wrist. This wouldn't be an issue except the comparable Hamiltons Khaki or Tissot Gentleman or any other generic Swatch group automatic watch at that price with a superior ETA2824 or Powermatic 80 are way more balanced on the wrist.
I wanted to like this but the overall dimensions are just too large for my liking, I went with the microbrand Pitzmann III which uses the same 8r48 Seiko movement and very happy with it 👍🏽
I believe no man can say no to MAMACOO's watches
Seiko hasn't been on my radar since they cancelled the SARB.
I also brig shame to my ancestors every day.
Especially for being an Asian
IWC Pilot's Chronograph 41 is 14.5mm thick..and is 7.6K on leather strap. So the thickness isn't the price of being poor.
Anything under $30k is for poor people.
That was a joke.
@YoureTerrific well played good sir.
Who’s idea was to glue pencil erasers on that thing?
That was an excellent honest very helpful video! Thx man
I absolutely love watches, the high end watch brands are out of my budget but the MAMACOO has literally an almost duplicate of every single watch on the market . Always a great but no matter your budget.
“There is no adjustment system on this bracelet. No sliding, no popping, no locking, no popping and locking…and…it squeaks.” 😳🥴😅
Watch reviewers don't have a clue about movements. They rather complain about clasps.
