Almost unsubscribed over your horrendous statement about the date window, but realised that on no other channel will I see so perfectly proportioned a wrist.
This might be my favorite 'in-between' Seiko Diver they've released in a while. I 1000% agree about getting rid of pin links on their bracelets and PLEASE add a better on-the-fly macro adj clasp. Add in one of their 8R** movements w/4 or 5 Hz and it's maybe one of the best ever.
For me, the real selling point about the date isn't the placement, it's the execution. It's easy to see the date when you think to yourself "what's today's date?" but it's also very easy to completely ignore it when you're not curious about today's date. It's a genuinely subtle feature.
I’m glad somebody brought up the fact that Seiko no longer put a metal frame around their dates on most models, even their seiko 5 models used to have them, making them look much more aesthetically pleasing with symmetry and a more detailed premium feel. But the 4:30 date window allows perfect symmetry with lume plots, complying with iso diving standards and making the date unassuming for when you are just checking the time.
I own spb143 and I wish I had this one. The date window placement and color is so much better. The black dial instead of gray to me looks so much better. The 453 to me just looks like THE watch to me. Just the most quintessential watch
Oh! I disagree, I have had a spb 143 for 2.5 years and I still love it, the dial, the date window without lume but the only problem is the movement but whatever, I adjust it every six months.
Patek does that on their nautilus lmao. It's funny how people scrutinize specs on a 1k seiko but when it comes to swiss brands where 1k is pocket change, they are willing to tolerate all sorts of bullshit.
@ no watch should have pin and collar. Idc if it’s a $200 Seiko or a $200,000 Patek. It’s 2024, people. Seiko AND Patek are fully in-house. So it wouldn’t cost them a whole lot more to manufacture some screws for their links.
THANK YOU! I completely agree on the border around the 3 o clock date window!!!! If you put a border around the 3 o clock on the SPB143, it would actually be perfect! Not having one makes it look so cheap and almost like it was cut out as an afterthought. Was my biggest gripe owning a 143
Nice review. As an owner of the SPB143, I agree the small lume pip at 3 o'clock next to the date window is not the best. A no date version of this watch would be perfect.
Great watch! And I agree, Evan, that dive clasp needs to go! As a Seikopath with a ton of experience with Seiko dive watches, I absolutely loathe the dive clasp and replace it as soon as I unbox the watch.
I had an SPB143 and it’s a very interesting combination of great design, good polishing, and not so good design elements. I don’t miss it at all. Also, the thickness wasn’t my thing.
430 date is great for symmetry, and the size of the window is just right on this one. Although I secretly prefer the angled date display on the 6r54 (GMT based) movement. The Samurai would probably be a better fit for a chunky wrist like yours.
CLEAN. I can appreciate this design. Personally I need a bit more personality though. Then again one of my favorite divers is the Richard Legrand Odyssea Mark III Oceanfarer from a brand I don't think even lasted a few years so what do I know lol
Love the watch, but its lacking something the 143 has. There is just something about that brushed steel bezel and sunburst grey dial that makes it special.
Dive extension choice is simple. Seiko text says DIVER’S. They decided to be the thing, not approximate the thing. Would love if they’d do an on-the fly adjust clasp to do the job of that unused item. The JDM SBXY063 has a small clasp with a click or two of on-the-fly. Add three-four clicks more and put it on everything. Or do a shorter version of the MM300 ratcheting clasp.
This watch reminds me of my Ball Skindiver Heritage II... also you should totally review a Ball watch! I don't think you've had one on the channel yet. They offer some interesting and relatively unique things like tritium illumination and 904L steel on most offerings.
Seiko do focus a lot on accuracy, they always have, why they made the quartz watch, kinetic and springdrive watches. I some time think seiko is grumpy they are still making mechanical movements after all their technological inventions and break throughs.
Why is it that this type of date window is always described as being at the 4:30 position? Wouldn’t that mean it would be closer to the 6 o’clock index as opposed to being between the 4 and 5 hour markers? If I am mistaken, can someone clarify this for me? Thank you.
Reminds me a lot of the Citizen Fujitsubo that you've previously covered. Between the titanium, diver extension, and significantly lower price (especially during sales), the Citizen seems like the better buy on paper, but there's something about that iconic 62MAS design that makes it a harder choice than it should be.
Guys Ive owned the SPB143 for 3 years now and if u wanna fix the clasp/bracelet issues: I put mine on an Uncle Seiko “z199” reissue strap. It’s perfect and elevates the watch to another level 😎✌🏽….or you just put it on a Tropic strap which I also do and add some lightness among with the vintage Vietnam vibes!
seiko is soo undervalued in the luxury world cause they release so much watches in different categories in different price ranges. That and their QC issues 😂
If I have no heart AND no brain, does that mean I must be the cowardly lion? 🤔😂. At least the date at 4.30 is straight, not tilted at 45 degrees, that’s more than ok 👍. Shame about the painful price. Mind you at the moment I can’t afford $300 for something I don’t need, let alone $1300 😅
Loved the video as always. Really like the look of this watch but it's so hard to justify the price when it comes such horrendous accuracy, and an awful bracelet and clasp but as Seiko has such a cult following I don't see them changing anything anytime soon.
I wonder if this watch is powerful enough to stop me buying a second hand SJE093 (the truest 62MAS recreation). I rather hope so because that SJE093 is eye wateringly expensive.
Pretty much cycled through 10 Seiko prospex divers and landed on the SPB 153. It's my favourite Seiko ever made and it holds its own next to Swiss luxury.
The movement in this watch sucks. ...I owned a SPB143 with the same movement and it kept awful time. I would never pay this kind of money for such an unreliable watch. It looks cool but serves no practical purpose unlike the thing its inspired from and like the guy in the video said...Seiko will just keep pumping this crap out as long as people buy it...they don't care if it works.
A couple corrections: The MAS actually stands for MORE in Spanish. And, fully graduated means that they send out their bezel inserts to college before installing them into the bezel.
The endlinks still having that gap in there...jfc Seiko, get it together. I have chinese watches that are so snug you would need a mini crowbar to get the bracelet off. And they want $1300 for this? FOH
"You can't believe everything you see on the Internet" - Abraham Lincoln
As an owner of the spb143 , i think this is an overall upgrade but I still prefer my sunray grey dial, brushed steel bezel and without the “3 days”.
spb143 owner here as well, the 453 is growing on me....
I love 4:30 date windows, and I cannot lie. And this one is really well-executed.

Date at 4:30 is the best placement. You don’t even notice it.
You can't read it either.
Agreed!
@@tudorserban111 Fair point
FINALLY…a watch company that orientated the date to the horizon at 4:30! It looks so much better than the slanted date there.
4-30 tiny date is stoopid. too small to read. just remove it and thin down the thick watch. diet time.

Yes and instead of $1300 it will be $2500.
Agreed with the date placement. This is one of the most underrated watches ever.
For me, the real selling point about the date isn't the placement, it's the execution. It's easy to see the date when you think to yourself "what's today's date?" but it's also very easy to completely ignore it when you're not curious about today's date. It's a genuinely subtle feature.
This date placement gives me horrors.
Thank you for saying it. The date window on needs a "frame".... this version is cleaner and just blends in.
I’m glad somebody brought up the fact that Seiko no longer put a metal frame around their dates on most models, even their seiko 5 models used to have them, making them look much more aesthetically pleasing with symmetry and a more detailed premium feel. It’s fantastic. The only problem is the accuracy.
Right, especially at $1300.
@ at the price you’re expecting better
So what is fantastic?
A friend of mine has the blue one and it runs at +2secs a day. But I guess is more or less luck, another guy has its own around +6
Pin and collar bracelet on a $1300 watch. Never change, Seiko. Never.Change.
I’m more offended at the aluminum bezel.

Very nice. Impossible to keep track of all the 62mas iterations.

the early release of the 143 had a frame around the date and no lume pip
If i wasnt already waiting for whatever 60th anniversary 62MAS seiko releases in 2025, i would get this
They have to include the diver extension for the watch to meet ISO compliance standards…
I like to think it's (62)17 (M)echanical (A)utomatic (S)elf-dater. Gotta get your hands on an SJE093.

I’m surprised they didn’t use a Hardlex crystal, they love touting its advantages when they put them on $500+ watches lol!

Needs a better movement.
Correction, it needs to be regulated. The movement itself should be fine if they just made the effort to regulate it.
I like the date placement. I cant even read it because I'm old and have a SEVEN INCH WRIST. I just bought the SPB317 and it's getting a lot of wear.
I don't mind the date, but no date would be better
The only problem with watches is that they won't fix your face
But I've heard that girls will go home with you if you have a nice Seiko! 💪
In my experience if you have a nice Rolex girls will take half your home.
Can't see your face if your watch is highly polished and blinging all over the place.
The problem with nice watches is that they won’t fix your bank account.

It's referred to as the 4:30 position because it's between the 4 and 5 hour markers. So instead of saying 4.5 position people say 4:30.
When the time is 4:30, where is the hour hand pointing?
