Messing things up is how the greatest inventions were made: velcro, chewing gum, that weird drawing I made that for some reason everyone likes. Throw all the wrenches!

I have used Canson Heritage in the past and it was wonderful paper. With all of the botanicals I’m doing, I’m trying to stick with Arches for now as long as I can find decent deals on them (or good coupons), but Canson Heritage is definitely great for botanical work too (in my opinion). The only Legion watercolor paper I can find anywhere is the black paper - which is really fun to work with, especially metallic watercolor and gouache - but I sure miss the Legion cotton watercolor paper and it’s what I cut my teeth on when learning watercolor from Jenna Rainey.
Great video as always Pete!!! You brighten my Mondays. Many blessings to you!

Thank you, Kristie! I'll be talking about this in an upcoming video, Lizzie Steel is a botanical artist who swears by Fluid 100. I've used it and it works great for laying in details and then doing a wash over the top and still retaining the details. You have to get the Fluid 100 though not just the regular Fluid pulp paper. Legion is one of my favorite papers. It's one of the best for blending on the paper. Amazon and Dick Blick usually have it in stock.

Some manufacturers change the way they make their materials, and the quality or properties of the paper change. Like Fabriano Artistico Extra White Hot Pressed 100% cotton paper. That's why update videos are important. Another example is Prismacolor colored pencils: their quality declined when manufacturing moved abroad.

that makes since about the paper. i find myself using a different paper depending on what i want to paint. i even have a bit of pulp paper for some things. i don't do alot of lifting but i did notice masking fluid/tape can be a problem with fluid100 and it's my favorite paper XD my second is the cellular paper by windsor and newton. my beef with the water pens is a lack of control, always too much water or too little. i do use one for painting away from the studio. i find it odd that people ignore watercolor pencils. as a picture not to much but i use it instead of a pencil so the drawing outline disappears while i paint instead of having to erase. i am the only person i know who dose this.

Well....you can't say that anymore, now you do. Lol. Yes, using a water color pencil is very smart. I either use a watercolor pencil or a very light water soluble graphite, only if it doesn't matter if it dulls the color a little. You are ahead of the crowd if you understand using the right paper for the right job is important. I have a video where I talk about this more with an example coming out in 2 weeks. I understand the frustration of using a water brush but I think I've been using them so much for so long I don't even notice anymore. I can usually tell how the brush will react based on the fullness of the reservoir just behind the brush. Occasionally it fools me but that happens with my watercolor brushes also. Thank you for your insight!

Those "do this, not that" videos make me turn into a child. I'm going to do this and I'll make it work no matter what because you said it won't.

Thanks! But its true that with certain papers one can spoil the work very easily unless used in a very simplistic manner. I loved working with 'mediocre' watercolor paper, but when i needed to get past a certain point, RUclips videos helped a huge deal. More so as they are painting on them and its such a huge help. Of course i follow up on my own as well...
Loved your painting and the process...❤

Thank you for sharing! I agree, I used to go to RUclips a lot to see the right way to use things. A little less now than I used to but I still do it. 🙂

Thanks for the review! Yeah, I agree with your opinion. I prefer paper that textured enough for watercolor and works well with colored pencil. Apparently, canson montval works well with my style. Considering it is a "lower grade" according to consensus than its sibling 'Moulin D Roy' and 'Heritage', I don't really mind due to its price point tho! I still work with Heritage or Waterford for predominantly watercolor works, but hey whatever floats your boat I guees!

Hello Hazim! Thank you for your input. I have not been able to get along with Canson Montval but maybe I just received a bad book. A lot of people like it. I'll have to try again. I like a lot of different brands for different things but I don't think I have a go to right now. I want to try Waterford soon also.

Oh, this piece turned out great! I need to try 300 pound paper. I will try Canson. As always the narration is so much fun. 😃👍

Thank you, Linda! Give it a try, a lot of people love it once they get used to it but it is an adjustment. 🙂
