    I love my granulating watercolors, I probably use those more than any I have. The colored pencil was an awesome idea. I think I would use it more than the fluid.
    I love to watch the vultures fly, they just glide and swoop….ahhh. I have a thing for crows….not because I’m an old crow (I am), but they are cool birds and very smart. This was a great video as always Pete. 👍

    The W&N Granulating Medium can be a bit tricky and often misses the mark because folks dont use it correctly...You used it the correct method!!! Amazon just had a great sale on the Medium and I was able to grab a few more bottles! Another technique is to use a granulating paint ie Lunar Black by DS and mix it with another non granulating paint to create a totally new granulating paint! Or you can mix Ultramarine Blue with another non granulating paint to create a new color! Again thank you so much Pete! You Rock! ...Rus from Pennsylvania 🤓🖌🎨❤️

      I believe “Mars Black” is the name the other brands use for that granulating black. Also, cobalt colors granulate and I believe if they are mixed with the “smooth” colors they will granulate the batch but I’ve never actually tried it.

    • @IllustrationsByPete

      I used to use the lunar black but I found it made a lot of the lighter colors look dirty. I do enjoy mixing other granulating colors into non-granulating colors. Glad I could help. 👍🏻

    Good lesson on making non-granulating paints granulate! As a kid, when drawing and coloring dragons, the last step was always to take the page and a contrasting color out to the sidewalk and put it down so you could slide a crayon along the dragon’s skin to make it pebbly. Fun stuff, pebbles and granulations!😅

    These birds are great. I'm a farmer and they alert me to a problem in my fields. There's either an animal in distress or a death happening when you see them circling around your pasture. They're our sanitation department of nature. They're also tough as nails. Imagine the bacteria they eat without getting sick! There's probably something useful in their blood that we could use if we don't already.
    I love granulation and by golly I do have a dog! 😂

    I _love_ birds and I'm a big fan of the corvid family (crows, ravens, magpies) personally, and was talking to someone about them just last week and they mentioned how raptors are used to keep like rodents and small animals from getting on the tarmac at airports and I was like raptors? HUH? I had never known that was a term used for the bird of prey species in that way lol but I do love owls and falcons as well and find them fascinating. I would love to do falconry at some point in my life cause I think it's one of the coolest things ever.
    I also forgot to mention that at the previous home I lived in, our house butt up against a canyon. Like we had the backyard and beyond it was a canyon and so we had glass fencing around the yard so we could see the canyon and city view even beyond that. ANYWAYS one day we had a turkey vulture land on our glass fencing and I was shocked out how large they are, like so much bigger than you think when you see them flying around. especially when it took off from the glass, the wingspan was massive. Such a rad thing to witness up close in the wild lol

    • @IllustrationsByPete
      @IllustrationsByPete  6 месяцев назад +1

      I enjoy corvids as well. They have such big personalities and they can be very funny sometimes. A lot of farmers use the raptors to scare off other birds and rodents from their crops. Even if they don't use them a lot doing that right before the harvest saves a lot of animal lives because so many make their homes in crop fields. You have to try falconry. It is my favorite thing to do outside of art and music. If I had more time to dedicate to it I would get my license. Unfortunately for now, I'll need to go to flying events. 👍🏻

    This was cool and I appreciate your experimentation with granulation. I just love granulating colors and have spent far too much $ on DS Primetek paints. Now that I see I can make it myself with a colored pencil, that is just fantastic! And I’ve used granulation medium before, but it never seemed to work. However, the artist I was following said to brush it on top of your other paints, NOT to use it as water like you did here. So effective! Thanks Pete, and the video of the vulture was cool. My first time finding your channel, I plan on watching many more!

    Organic non-granulating paints with very small particle size may give 'anti-granulation' texture, that is, travel up the hills of the paper texture, opposite to settling down in the valleys. This happens if you soak your arches torchon paper in water and paint wet on wet with pigments like quinacridones, perylenes or indanthrone blue (never tried it with phthalos, but it should also work). If the wash stays wet long enough, and starts drying on tops of the hills, they pull water from the body of the paper with some pigment particles, and the very tops of the paper texture dry with dark dots.

    Mix with another granulating paint: there’s a reason a certain super-granulating company uses a LOT of PY159 (volcano yellow; a bit less granulating version is winsor Newton, lemon yellow deep (I think that’s the PY159). I try and make my own dupes of paints like Rockwell Paint’s “Charms” series..stunning paints with a much too high shipping to the US (from Canada). It’s currently almost 7am, I’ve been up all night playing with new paints and pigments (I mull some of my own 😁), some of which I got specifically to try and get Rockwell’s Charms 3, Blue Iris…PV23, PV19 & PB36. I keep trying…but trying to find the right PV19 & PB36 is proving to be a BIT of a challenge. Going to nap whilst my latest attempts dry; but I think the much more granulating PB36 I got yesterday is doing the trick!
    Also, just fyi, there are some EXCELLENT, VERY affordable handmade paints, many of which are granulating, on Etsy. In fact that’s the other reason I was up…got my new goodies from Kourtney at KOZ Paints! All I’ve done so far are swatches and a mixing chart; but I’m hoping to put them to good use later today, finishing a portrait of my precious Dr Kitty Leela…it ain’t JUST doggy slaves who love granulation and separation! Her Highness is calling me…she wants her moosic back on for our nap. 😁

    Maybe it is my art style but i am not really into granulating colours, if it granulate it is ok but i dont really seek it out. I did got some granulating paint to try but haven't try them yet. Thank you for the techniques. Living in Belize i am usually limited with the type of sketchbooks so i learn to do bookbinding to make the sketchbook i want with the paper i want. @@IllustrationsByPete paint making is fun and it is take very long to make especially if you are doing it by hand like i did. One colour can took me 4 hours to make but finer pigments can take up an hour or two. Paint making gave me a greater understanding of watercolour paints and appreciation. most of my color mixes end up being granulating because I have about half granulating half not granulating colors I make. When you mix one with the other it will granulate even better. If you want a super easy way just add mars/lunar/whatever brand you want to go with black. the mars/lunar etc planatary name type black will granulate.
