Great video - it helped me to better understand the workings of the controller. I agree that the shutdown window should be larger than 30 minutes - 2 to 4 hours (configurable) would be nice.
Yes. Submit customer feedback with this request. I’ve submitted it 3 times with different emails so far 😁 if we all do this they will consider a feature update.
I like the way you left trial & error in the video as you figured out the operation on screen- very helpful. Thank you. Have you come across a good video tutorial on the process after your ride is over to get the overlays into your video editor of choice?
Thanks! 😊 I haven’t personally searched for the overlay tutorials but I can possibly put something together. I have lots of footage captured using remote during my trips. But from reading I understand that you need to do it from the Mimo app.
@7:10 I guess they fixed this since on my cam with the latest firmware (10th of jan) that message is longer and says "... within 30 min to wake up camera, or press to enable SnapShot when camera is powered off" . So I would assume that pressing the record button on the remote will wake the camera and start shooting just like it would if pressing record on the camera itself. Even after 30 minutes. I am still waiting for my remote so I haven't tested this yet, but that's how I understand that info.
@@ninerpeak do let us know how it worked :) I tried now with the camera and indeed it resumes filming via snapshot even after 4 hours or so of sleeping. Hopefully it will have the same behavior via the remote too.
@@ninerpeak yeah ... I've been spamming the DJI forums on each topic that's related to the remote, with the request to allow the camera to NOT go off after 30 minutes. That seems to be the issue actually. After 30 minutes of sleep, the camera turns itself completely off to save battery. And they should allow users to set this value, from 30 minutes all the way down to never. Maybe if more of us voice our opinion on the forums they will listen and put it in a future firmware update.
I'm thinking that the reason the remote shuts down the Bluetooth connection after 30 minutes, is to conserve the battery life on the remote. As others have suggested, a simple fix would be, to simply reestablish the connection briefly between the remote and the camera, sometime before it hits the 30-minute time limit.
You are right. It’s to conserve battery. One can turn on the car every 30 mins to keep the connection alive. I just wish they let users control the idle duration. I always carry the battery case with me and wouldn’t mind draining more juice with 2 hr idle connection time.
@paweljonca-art, buttons on the remote are way better than the camera itself. Also Iole buttons on the cage the camera comes with. Helps feel buttons when using gloves.
This doesn’t work if the camera has been off for over 30 mins. I just tried holding the record button. But yes it turns on the camera if it is within 30 mins. Great information!
I think I will wait for a version of the remote that will make use of the 50 mW Ant+ dongle that is attached to the Osmo Action 4 should that compatibility option arise. That would use much less power at the expensive of range but that would meet your needs on the motorcycle.
Didn’t even know the Ant+ dongle existed :) It will be amazing if they are able to start and stop two cameras like GoPro does. Apart from this negative I absolutely love the camera. It is consistent. Doesn’t fail. And gotta love the boot time. It helps me when riding to quick capture something that I see, like a scenic opening in the mountains. Thanks for taking time to comment. It was helpful.
What is the maximum distance between camera and remote controller? I would like to place the camera near a badger sett and trigger recording from 30 yards.
They made a remote for the Osmo 2 and 4, but not the 3 lol. My hero 5 with remote does this exact same thing, but I’m not sure how long it will let the camera sleep before shutting off the remote or camera. I’ll have to test it.
This remote works just like the legendary Sony FDR X3000 but the remote with Live View. You can still power the camera from the remote even after 24 hours or longer than that.
Thank you! It doesn’t drop the connection but the only issue is that the camera Bluetooth shuts down after 30mins of not using it. The. You have to turn on both the camera and remote again. It connects quick but I wish that the duration was longer than 30 mins.
I’m not sure how the settings work because mine wakes up the camera and the 30 minute timer in the settings is turned off. After it’s connected if the camera times out after the default 5 minutes, or I turn it off manually, it can be turned back on without instantly recording by pressing the link button on the side. But I have literally just taken it out of the box about 20 minutes ago. Correct me if I’m wrong but if your concern is that it’s going to disconnect in the 30 minute timeframe, couldn’t you just quickly click the side button to give it a five minute wake up every 20 minutes or so? And for whatever it’s worth, if you click the side button quickly five times, it switches to a different mode and reads out a bunch of gps information.
The issue is, if you leave the camera turned off for over certain time the Bluetooth remote cannot wake it up which is annoying. GoPro does this for several hours when Osmo only allows 30 mins which is too short. It could be firmware update because there was no timer setting to keep Bluetooth connection alive when camera was turned off. When riding motorcycles I don’t want to play with pressing multiple buttons. I am looking for one press solution where the cameras just start recording. GoPro has been doing this for years, I was hoping DJI can add that feature as software update and let users manage the battery expectations. Because of this issue I don’t really use the remote anymore while riding. Only for specific applications. Thanks for sharing the GPS information trick. Will try it out.

Hi I haven’t tested it with continues recording but have used it intermittently as I ride and it lasts me a couple of days. I’d say between 8-10 hours of standby and record time combined.
Hi you have mentioned that you would be getting two cameras to test the GPS remote control sinking both of them. I've currently got two osmo Action 4 and the remote but can't figure out how to pair both at the same time!?
Yes it is not a straightforward process. Very disappointed at DJI for this. I recorded the process but cannot seem to find my video files. I’ll make a new one in a day or so and will upload it.
How was the Range test for diff mounting points? My GoPro is very unreliable controlling a GP10 or Max on the back of the top box of the bike facing back (I cannot see it there behind me) - same if I mount the Max on a long stick. This seems better?
No range issues with this one. It doesn’t matter where camera is on the bike. Remote works perfectly. My only issue is controlling multicams. GoPro does that the best.
You shouldn't say start recording and shut down as you do this on the remote. It's confusing for the viewer as the camera will operate when it hears those commands.
Thanks for the test. I'm still trying to understand the remote wake function. From your test, after switching off the OA4 using the remote. Then later, switching off the remote and on again, the remote wake of OA4 will not function unless I manually switch on the OA4 power button. Can you confirm if this is correct? Thanks bro!
The remote connects back even if it was turned off as long as the synced camera was not turned off over 20 mins. The camera turning off after 20 mins is what kills the connection. I bet they do it to give more battery life. There should’ve been an option on OA4 to extend the connection up to 2 or more hours and let users choose.
Would love if they give users a choice to drain battery. Especially with the new denser battery they released with 5 Pro. Submit a complaint. If every person who watched this video did that, DJI will pay attention 😄
Hey! Thanks!! Yes I have two cameras but they only can start/stop recording with remote if both cameras are on. Which is useful in some cases but not when I’m riding. It’s a disappointment. So I use remote only for the camera looking at me but use record button for the helmet cam.
Honestly? I think that remote is a HUGE fail. First of all, it shouldn't be needed in order to access the GPS data from the camera. That's just dumb and obviously a money grab. Considering the remote's primary function is to start/stop camera recordings, $125 for this very basic device is absofreakinlutely ricockulous. I would like to access the GPS data from my Action 4, but I can't see myself paying that much money for this device just for that option. I totally understand how useful the remote is for someone that rides, but I don't really do anything to where I would actually need the remote. At any rate, this video helped to solidify my decision to NOT purchase the remote... at least not for the asking price for it.
Thanks for taking time to write👍👍. Also I am glad that the video helped you make a decision. Yes my primary function is to use it while riding so I don’t have to take my hand off the handlebar. I seriously hope that DJI will improve the remote with more features. I’d like a way to start all calls at once and stop at once from off state and back to off state when recording is done. Also the sleep timer for Bluetooth is too short. Hoping for the best 🤞 Btw I paid $80 USD
Just curious regarding the 30 minute Bluetooth connection…. if you were to record a 15 second clip after 25 minutes does the countdown resume for another 30 minutes, or will it still shutdown after another 5 minutes? Was wondering if there was a way to refresh the connection without restarting the camera. Great video by the way; thanks for showcasing this product; I’m considering getting one too.
Hi, the 30 min timer resets every time the camera shuts down so if you record 15 seconds at 25th minute. You will reset the Bluetooth connection timer for another 30 mins. I have been trying to figure out if there’s a way to extend it another 30 mins by pressing any button on the remote but it seems to be a camera config. The camera shuts down its own Bluetooth and the remote goes to connecting screen.
Have been looking around but unable to get any information about how how long you can record for with the remote before it needs to be recharged? Do you have any rough estimates from your usage so far?
I have been on a day long ride with this remote yet but not a multiday. The remote lasted whole day. I can say for sure that it can go for a few days with decent record time but it is no match to the GoPro remote. My GoPro remote would last me for a month before I ever have to charge. I think it’s mainly because this remote has a backlight. They should add an option to just turn it off. That’ll dramatically increase the battery life.
My action 4 camera automatically turn off its display while recording after 10 minutes or so, can this remote waking up my action display if that happen?
Camera display turn off setting is different than camera sleep setting. This remote can wake up Action 4 camera for up to 20 mins after the last use. After 20 mins the camera just turns off.
I use my action 4 on an airplane mounted to the rear wing. The wifi connection via my iphone is just out of range in the cockpit but if I hold my phone behind me it barely connects. Does anyone know if the Action 4 remote has better range then an iphone connection!???
That is so cool! Yes, I found the range on Bluetooth remote better and reliable than my iPhone connection at distance. Please post like to your video you are creating some cool content.
Does it sync your gps data when you use the remote? GoPro has ditched the gps in the 12 because hardly anyone uses it but the reason is almost everyone uses quick capture so the gps never gets initialized. Does this remote keep your gps signal the whole time and then auto sync to your recordings? That’s really the only reason I’d want it.
well that puts a new GoPro out the window for me , I never realised they removed the GPS from the new 12 , definitely made my mind up now to go for the Action 4 and a remote .
@@uptowndisco2 yea I get why GoPro removed it since no one used it but like I said that’s because you’d have to turn on and leave your camera on while you started and stopped recording which would kill the battery. So instead most use quick capture for instant on and record but then the gps doesn’t sync. I agree it’s still dumb to remove and it would screw with one use for me which is track driving events where programs like Harry’s lap timer or race chrono use the gps to auto sync with your lap information. I think Dji method of keeping it in the remote is smarter though, it can stay linked to the gps and the camera doesn’t need to stay on burning up the battery. Won’t be surprised if there’s a new GoPro remote in the works.
DJI stays idle for weeks. I took two long over night rides 3 weeks apart where I used it a lot and never manually turned it off (it auto shuts after some time) but I had to charge it towards the end of my second ride while I was riding. I think if there was a way to turn off the backlight the battery will last longer. GoPro one doesn’t have a back light. The light actually helped me in low light situations when I wanted to see the shooting mode.
Yes it can. But in that mode you cannot wake up cameras and shut them down from the remote. You have to have both cameras on in order to control both simultaneously.
I can post a pic of what I have. Be on the lookout. Consider subscribing so you won’t miss it 😊I’ll post. It’s a big list but gets most of the stuff done. I’ve been visiting the dealership for periodic maintenance though since the bike is still in 3 year warranty.
Hi I haven't tested it with continues recording but have used it intermittently as I ride and it lasts me a couple of days. I'd say between 8-10 hours of standby and record time combined.
I bought the Osmo Action 2, 3, and 4 and went right back to my GoPros. GoPro is just way better and I use drones and cameras on all of my travels even around the world. The Action 4 is usually left behind now and I feel I wasted my money on it. I always carry at least three GoPros and at least two DJI drones everywhere.
Splash proof. Use it all the time on motorcycle even during rain. Have dipped it in water accidentally no issues. I won’t put it under water for longer periods like while swimming.
I got more than 10 hrs so far. But I do find it annoying that it doesn’t last as long as the GoPro one does. Which feels like forever 😄 I didn’t test the range but it should be same as other Bluetooth 4 devices.
@@ninerpeak It doesn’t have to last, and without knowing your Timezone, the time of day would be incorrect, but at least you wouldn’t need a seperate device to keep track of the battery life of everything.
The remote is terrible. If I need GPS I just break out one of my GoPros like my 9, 10, or 11 and I usually have two 12s and the GoPro Max so no need for this anyway.
Yes, Mimo app can wirelessly control one camera at a time. Not ideal for my application as I don’t want to operate cellphone for camera control when riding a motorcycle 😊
@@ninerpeak I was not thinking for a motorcycle. But you have your Cellphone up as it is on your motorcycle. Press a button on your Cell or This Remote. Same difference. Just one you already own and do not have to pay extra for. Unless your one of the people that are getting rid of your cell phone. Which seems to be trend now.
The biggest benefit of having a physical button is I don’t have to look at it to press it. I can feel it with my thumb while I focus on the road. The phone is for navigation. With screen there are several steps. First I’ll have to switch the app from navigation to Mimo. Then wait for it to connect to the camera then see where the record button is. That’s way too many steps to get distracted while riding or driving. 😊
@@ninerpeak I never used the phone as navigation. But I see that can be a thing too. I talking not for riding. And the simplness of just being able to feel the button is a good point. Im talking if some one just walking. But has the camera in a spot they can not easly reach. Like the top of their head. But, I see they are about the same. Simpler on the wrist. Phone added benefit you can watch the camera on the screen. So depends on the situation. Thanks for the response. I got it now.
Yep agree with you, different situation needs different solution. Speaking of controlling with phone, they should add multipoint support to control two cameras at the same time to Mimo. If there’s a way, I don’t know how to.
Love the DJI remote along with the Mic 2. I wanted the GPS data so I could get my practice lap times. I needed a separate software program to get what I wanted but it works great. This is a link to my latest video to see how I'm using the GPS data and the Mic 2 is inside my helmet. Thanks for your video it was awesome. ruclips.net/video/DkfxqMkOyFg/видео.html

Очень полезное видео, именно то, что я искал!)
Glad the video helped. Thanks! 😊
what is the max. distance between remote and camera?
It’s the Bluetooth range for 4.2. So about 80ft on paper. But I’ve used it max 20-25 ft without issues.
@@ninerpeak Thanks😀
I use my action 4 on an airplane mounted to the rear wing. The wifi connection via my iphone is just out of range in the cockpit but if I hold my phone behind me it barely connects. Does anyone know if the Action 4 remote has better range then an iphone connection!???
That is so cool! Yes, I found the range on Bluetooth remote better and reliable than my iPhone connection at distance.
Please post like to your video you are creating some cool content.
Can it be for capturing photo also?
Yes it can change modes and captures photos as well
Does it sync your gps data when you use the remote? GoPro has ditched the gps in the 12 because hardly anyone uses it but the reason is almost everyone uses quick capture so the gps never gets initialized. Does this remote keep your gps signal the whole time and then auto sync to your recordings? That’s really the only reason I’d want it.
Yes gps data works perfectly. The only way I could figure is to use Mimo app to overlay the information.
well that puts a new GoPro out the window for me , I never realised they removed the GPS from the new 12 , definitely made my mind up now to go for the Action 4 and a remote .
How long does the remote control battery last? GoPro more weeks. Dji?
DJI stays idle for weeks. I took two long over night rides 3 weeks apart where I used it a lot and never manually turned it off (it auto shuts after some time) but I had to charge it towards the end of my second ride while I was riding.
I think if there was a way to turn off the backlight the battery will last longer. GoPro one doesn’t have a back light. The light actually helped me in low light situations when I wanted to see the shooting mode.
Thank you. Would the battery last 8 hours with a lot of use?
Yes that happens to be the case for me. I’ve recorded every half an hour throughout the day for avg 10 hrs ride.
can it pair and control two action 4 cams simultaneously?
Yes it can. But in that mode you cannot wake up cameras and shut them down from the remote. You have to have both cameras on in order to control both simultaneously.
I love dji products
That makes it two of us 👍 truly superior products.
@@ninerpeak what tools do you recommend for maintenance on your bike? What sockets? I have a 2022 1250rt
I can post a pic of what I have. Be on the lookout. Consider subscribing so you won’t miss it 😊I’ll post. It’s a big list but gets most of the stuff done. I’ve been visiting the dealership for periodic maintenance though since the bike is still in 3 year warranty.
@@ninerpeak I subscribed a while ago. mines is under warranty but I still want to do oil changes an all on my own.
Much appreciated 🙏😊
How many hours of operation does the remote control last?
Hi I haven't tested it with continues recording but have used it intermittently as I ride and it lasts me a couple of days. I'd say between 8-10 hours of standby and record time combined.
@@ninerpeak Yes, I would only take about 60 minutes of recordings in a day with standby. 1 day would be enough for me. Thanks from Germany
can you connect more than one action camera?
Yes you can but you cannot start stop recording more than one camera from turned off state. Multiple cam setup works when all cameras are turned on.
Hola, ¿es compatible con Action 3?
Gracias
Hello, unfortunately it is only compatible with Action 4. Not compatible with Action 3. Action 2 remote is compatible with Action 3.
Very disappointed that I can't see the framing on the remote!
Yes, that would’ve been nice when you’re away from the camera and can’t see either of screens clearly.
I bought the Osmo Action 2, 3, and 4 and went right back to my GoPros. GoPro is just way better and I use drones and cameras on all of my travels even around the world. The Action 4 is usually left behind now and I feel I wasted my money on it. I always carry at least three GoPros and at least two DJI drones everywhere.
gopro is just way better because ...
From How far away can you use it?
They say it’s up to 70m I haven’t used it from that far though.
thanks
I just use my phone and the mimo app for remote operation.
True for many other applications for me as well. Just not when riding.
спасибо за обзор
You’re welcome. Glad the video helped.
Is it waterproof?
Splash proof. Use it all the time on motorcycle even during rain. Have dipped it in water accidentally no issues. I won’t put it under water for longer periods like while swimming.
to bad it doesn't work with the action3. I have a feeling DJI did this on purpose... because I can't see any reason it wouldn't work with the 3
Agreed. No new feature yet that sets this one significantly apart from the previous remote.
It has gps
Does it waterproof ?
Splash proof
What is the battery life of the remote and the working range ?
Thank you
I got more than 10 hrs so far. But I do find it annoying that it doesn’t last as long as the GoPro one does. Which feels like forever 😄 I didn’t test the range but it should be same as other Bluetooth 4 devices.
It looks like a watch and has a GPS. You’d think it would be pretty obvious to print the goddamn time on the screen.
😆 they could’ve added that as a feature. The battery life on these is doubtful though. Not sure if it’ll last whole day even if it just shows time.
I don’t really care for the remote. I haven’t tried my Apple Watch yet but maybe I’ll try it soon
Were you able to try Apple Watch?
Can you not do the same on your Cell Phone?
This is a link
to my latest video to see how I'm using the GPS data and the Mic 2 is inside my helmet. Thanks for your video it was awesome. ruclips.net/video/DkfxqMkOyFg/видео.html
I helmet I use lav mic so I won’t need to turn two things on. But for off ride videos I use Mic2 with DJI4. Absolutely love it.
I’ll take a look at your video to see the helmet setup.
