Hey Dayyan, I would actually not sterilize the wood. Microbial activity, specifically that of fungus, is very important. Wood decaying fungus--often categorized into white rot, brown rot, and soft rot--break down polymeres and allow the wood to be palatable for the isopods. Enzymes they produce deconstruct the cellulose, hemicellulose, and (in the case of white rot) the lignin, which provide immense nutritional value to the isopods. Soaking the wood for 48 hours or more, quarantining for at least a week (I do so for as long as possible), then repeating the soaking process is a great way to get rid of the macro life. The main concerns are: (1) predatory creatures like centipedes, mites, and spiders; (2) creatures that will compete with the isopods like other species and millipedes; and (3) pathogens. The first soaking ensures that number one and two are killed, the second soaking makes sure that, in the rare scenario osmosis didn't get to the eggs, newly hatched critters are killed, and the quarantining makes sure any pathogens don't make it (note: the risk for pathogens in very small). It probably doesn't matter that much though, have a good one :)
Thanks so much for sharing such an insightful comment! I really appreciate you taking the time! Yes, exactly, I worry about the mites and other potential problematic hitchhikers but I'll be sure to try this out instead next time!
@@Reptiliatus You can also freeze the wood as many fungus', especially those climatized to the weather of the north, undergo dormancy or can survive in the form of spores and sclerotia. Though I have not tried it myself, I've seen others do so and (after some time) the wood had become slightly warm to the touch, a sign of decomposition.
❤❤❤ I don’t care what isopods you show 😊 I’m just so happy that you’re finally showing them again ❤️❤️❤️ it was the isopods that led me to your channel. This was a beautiful video and I would rather have a 10 minute video often than an hour long video ones a year 😏☺️ love isopods 💖
I know you mention bat guano in your video and how worm castings is a close substitute, but I highly recommend getting your hands on some powdered bat guano to sprinkle into their encolosures. I keep rubber duckies (and white duckies) too and I've watched a couple videos saying that using bat guano can speed up their reproduction rates / how quickly they establish and my rubber duckies keep making babies for me (on my 4th gen now after keeping them for 8 months or so) :) btw I love your videos, keep up the great work
@@thebrookster1 I don't add perlite to mine. my mix contains organic top soil, coco coir (just for moisture and aeration theres no nutrition in it), calcium carbonate powder, compost, a bit of sand, sphagnum moss, and bat guano for cubaris sp
@cara9648, Well, I guess it IS a thing... I found stuff like this: Sowbugs are distinct in that they have two prominent tail like appendages (uropods) and cannot roll into a ball. Pill bugs on the other hand, can roll up into a ball and have no visible appendages besides antennae. This behavior has earned them the common name “roly-pollies”.
ISOPODS!!! First time commenting hello! Admiring them vicariously(edit: vicarious not precarious 😂 maybe the fact I'm tempted to keep them again makes it dangerous?) through high-quality videos from creators like yourself! Thank you sir! My parents(I'm a working adult but their apartment their rules...) had me get rid of all my cultures, 5 shoebox-sized bins, sometime last year and I've missed them since. Retaliating by getting LOTS of isopod plushies... They're all adorable in my eyes, but I do put the Cubaris sp. "Red Panda King" I had up there for biased reasons. QOTD: Porcellio scaber "Lava" or Porcellio werneri, the former because that specific morph was one of my newest additions before I lost my 'pods... While roly-polys are cool, I also love ones that don't conglobate like those! Otherwise go with your favorite(s)!
I actually started watching your videos around the time when you had put those videos out because I do remember watching them and I always really enjoyed watching them. I like seeing all the little different variations of the different species. I definitely like the magic potions, I don't remember if that's a kind you've kept b4 tho but they're definitely one of my favs along with the rubber duckies!
More isopods! After watching this video makes me want to get back into the hobby. I had several species that I traded for my leachie. My favorite were the chocolate zebras and clowns. Those set ups you made in this video was intense and such beautiful pieces.
Haha, I'll do my best, friend! They are super cool! Ooo yeah, those are great isopods! Thank you! I almost hope they don't last long in them because of running out of room from breeding 😜! Well see how that goes!
I just started my journey with rubber duckies as well! Funny cause i watched ur past videos for info and here u are making more content! Right on time to help me with my journey lol
Of course we'd love an isopod tour! I only have two species, kept together- Armadillidium vulgare and some Trichorina tomentosa. The Pillbugs are tough as NAILS and a great intro. the Dwarf Whites live more under the soil so they work as a good team with the Pillbugs to clean in the bioactive snake enclosure, but most of my isopods live together in their Culture tank habitat with lots of leaves, soil, flake soil and a chunk of cork, and a lil peace garden of a tiny buddha and a little fake tree- just to make it nice for me to look at. The Pillbugs are mad for protein. They like dried bugs & shrimp, snake sheds, quality fish flakes, and will strip down an entire pinkie in 48 hours. They get fed springtail diet and veggies too.
So glad you got back into Isopods! Please do an isopod tour! There are so many new isos in the hobby now, I seen all your other isopod videos (they are part of the reasons why I have over 30 species now) :) I have a soft spot for giant spanish porcellios so I will have to say one of those, have you seen the new hoffmannseggii morphs (orange and whiteouts, they look amazing!)
I actually JUST watched your very long isopod tour video because I bought some Cubaris sp, I have the papayas. I'm battling mold in my new set up and it's stressing me out. So this video is sooo helpful. The video I really need is how often and what to feed and just general weekly care for isopods. Thank you for thr content Dion! You're awesome!
Yes please do another isopods tour! I have Panda Kings and Dairy Cows! Panda Kings are going to go in my today tokay enclosure when i redo it. The Dairy Cows are just for fun.
recently saw you isopod tour videos! loved the porcelio ghost (?) flat, white, spine is yellow. Don't ask if we like isopods, just make a 10h tour! ISO-TOUR ISO-TOUR ISO-TOUR!!!
It'd be awesome to see the isopod tours come back, I remember when I first found your channel you were doing them, and that's what sparked my intrest in keeping exotic isopod species.
Sinds I got terminal cancer I had to sell my arboreal pit viper collection and lost a 25yr long hobby part . I got pair hognose there amazing and safe to keep the year/around that I'll live with chemo very heavy 5 chemos . So I love panda kind while and thought let's start a small collection of cubaris isopods and I love them. They are ok if im few days sick, there safe ,and some are wanted Sinds bio active is popular now. I think for some situations these are a great pet that are fun to look at and I went from existing as many would think to boring. Isopods are not boring at all there very active ,cute ,and interesting. I'm glad they give me bit back my hobby in a safe and cool way . 😂❤
I've always been into all critters. My own collection (while much smaller) is diverse, like yours. I keep reptiles, amphibians, invertebrates, and even a couple of mammals. All of that is a long way of saying that I'm into watching it all, and more isopod vids would be welcome. These days, I get particularly excited for follow up videos (I like seeing how enclosures grow in over time), so that has my vote (regardless of the species in the enclosure). Thanks for showing off your Cubaris sp.! :)
I’m sorry I didn’t see any links for getting isopods.. could you tell me where you get them? You said you got them from Dave but I was wondering how to get to his site
Thanks for the video, man! Love it. You should totally do a whole deep dive video of all your isopod setups. On a sidenote, did you also put the limestone in the oven?
Yes, please. Isopods!!! Some months ago I watched your old videos on them. GREAT I'm going to ask again...do you know of Galaxy Frogs? I'm obsessed with them...
Qotd: I've watched all of your isopod tours, my favorite of yours (and the one im very lucky to have now was Reductoniscus tuberculatis), they're just so werid. tiny, grain of sand sized spikeballs. also, as much as i love rubber duckies, the #1 cutest is definitely the pak chongs, just such a cute little thing!
Hi Reptiliatus - I want to get more specific info when it comes to cubaris sp Questions: 1. Given there's enough space in the bin with good amount of nutrients, humidity, half dry, half moist - can cubaris sp like Rubber Ducky and White Ducky live together? BumbleBee and Cappuccino? Red Panda and Penguin? 2. Considering the size, will cubaris sp attack other cubaris sp? Or it's only about the food where competition might take place? 3. Any suggestion of cubaris sp that can live together? Not for the purpose of interbreeding or morphing, but want to see if cubaris sp have harmony in the ecosystem. Thank you!
I added some isopodes to my geckos new bio active terrarium, but I should definitely look more into it. He's old and seems happier. But, idk.if any of them made it. I like the idea of adding the calcium straight into the soil.
Considering that lime stone comes from seashells that have been compressed for thousands of years do you think that adding fused seashells that were strunk by lightning would be adequate for a rubber ducky enclosure? I have some that I gathered the last time I was at the beach.
I accidentally got some dwarf whites in with my rubber ducky and found that while the rubber duckies roam up top, the dwarf whites were further down in the substrate. Also, place them in a dark spot and leave them be. They will multiples like crazy. Mine out grew their enclosure and then I accidentally killed a big chunk moving them to a bigger container
I've had a springtail culture and have split them into a new container. Would like to ask for potential reasons why they just don't thrive? The original one seems alright but the population does not explode like yours, while the newer one isn't doing well at all. I'm thinking that temperature could be a factor since it could go above 30C during the day? Any advice?
I just ordered a 10ct of rubber ducky isopods and have a terrarium set up for them already. It includes a moisture gradient, sphagnum moss, star moss, thread moss, a rock cave, decaying wood and leaves, and bark hides. We are leaving for 2 weeks near the 4th of July and I was wondering if it will be OK to leave them since the set up has many food options. My main concern is the moisture level. I currently have a lid that is completely screen. Should I make one out of plastic with holes in it so moisture is retained better?
Also, what isopods are good for what envierment, and will your reptile keep the population in check, do the relly coll different types do well in a bioactive enclshuore (with reptile inside).I don't want the house over run with 1:40 isopods so I'm not shore about bioactive setups so could you shine some light the whole bioactive/isopod subject?
I cant decide which ones to get rubber ducky or white ducky? white duckys are gonna be 30 euro more for me than normal rubber duckies, any advice? Also I wanna see them often

Good luck man! I hope you have success with the duckies this time around.
