      @rennleisaber3371 3 года назад

      @@SIRO_GLYDER i know this is forever and a half now but yeah, roly pollies are a cute nickname we give to isopods because, at least in my area, they curl up into their little balls. they're very cute and plentiful in my yard! i always love doing gardening or cleaning because there's always a hundred that scatter lol
      also, they have names like pillbugs and sowbugs, but that apparently refers to the variation of the isopods. the former refers to the roly pollies/isopods that can curl up into a ball (ex. armadillidium species), while the latter are the type of isopod that cannot roll up and have a flatter appearance (ex. porcellio scabers)

    This is inspiring. I have salty isopods (I'm a reefer), but my son sparked my interest in terrestrial isopods recently. We're going to practice with some guys from the yard before trying some other species. I can see this becoming a full blown addiction and taking up space in my fish room...

      @@pascal590 lots of reef isopods are good guys. Munnid isopods and most sphaeromatids are algae grazers. They're good food for your fish, too. They are ubiquitous and can hitchhike on anything wet you put in your tank. Live rock, algae, frags, even a snail or hermit crab.

    Hi! I have a short story to tell you. I became interested in invertebrates a couple of years ago and started by having spiders as pets. One day I found a woodlouse spider and started feeding her with isopods from my garden. I looked for care videos of this spider on RUclips, but instead found your firsts videos about your isopod collection. Now, few months later I have like ten enclosures of isopods that I have found only in my backyard. I don’t offer the spider my isopods anymore... 😉 I really enjoyed your video, although I had to watch in parts.

    Thanks for this great video!!! My kids were so freaked out when I pulled earthworms, baby centipedes & isopods out from under a cut log in our yard yesterday here in the Pacific Northwest. As soon as they saw they were harmless and pretty cute crawling around on my fingers they got much less scared, happy to show them examples of isopods besides the grey ones that live here in Western Washington. 🏞️

We found them half hollowed out and couldnt figure out what was happening. Luckily the biggest survived.

    In the UK, the common name for the local species of isopods is "Wood Lice" (possibly the US as well?)
    But they're so commonplace that they've resulted in a plethora of regional common names. In Wiltshire (South-West England) they're called variously "Chucky Pigs" and a host of other names.

    • @taleandclawrock2606
      @taleandclawrock2606 4 года назад

      Hey, wasps will leave you alone, just dont disturb them or their nests, slow movements and they will usually fly away. Dont let unecessary fear restrict your life! A bear or wolf maybe reason for hiding indoors,but not a wasp. 💚
      You can attract isopods by putting some carrot pieces on damp ground in shady area, with a piece of bark or old pot or such over the top, with some little gaps for entry. Check it after a few days, or a week, scoop up carrots and surrounding soil into a round container with sides at least a few inches depth. Then you can sit in good light, with magnifying glass or zokm camera on smart phone, and check out what little creatures live in your garden. You can scoop out little isopods individually with a spoon to transfer to your preprepared enclosure. Enjoy😍

    Hello, can you tell me which Isopod prefer dry enviroments?

    • @thembofriendsimp
      @thembofriendsimp 5 лет назад

      All isopods need moisture because they are crustaceans
      In general Armadillidium species need less moisture than others

    Thanks, I enjoyed the entire video. I'm new to the isopods. I have a collection of High Expression Hawaiian Mourning Gecko I picked up in Hawaii 4 yrs. ago. Now I'm in need of some Springtails and Isopods. Do you have any available? How much? And as I saw throughout your video enough that will survive because I am still learning. I was thinking of Springtails, Porcellio laevis "Dairy Cow because they seem to thrive. What about the Porcellio Expansus (White), Porcellio laevis (Orange), survival rate. Plus how are your Rubber ducky isopods doing?

    Absolutely awesome. I bought Porcellio laevis dairy cows and the Porcellio laevis whites and only found out from your video I basically bought the same isopods twice lol.
    But the whites are doing better than the dairy cows lol.
    Any advice on what to get for a burrowing humidity liking amphibians? I have barred tiger salamanders and since the dairy cows are protein driven I am kind of worried about them biting at my Sals when they are buried for a long time

      Wonderful! I don't recommend keeping anything larger than dwarf whites or N. cristatus with amphibians. P. scaber and P. laevis are very aggressive and capable of attacking them.

    I've seen a number of videos like this where people use containers with holes drilled along the top edge for ventilation. I've also seen most people recommend springtails as companions for the isopods, but since the springtails are so much smaller, isn't there a large risk of them escaping from the ventilation holes in these setups?

    i only keep the white african isopods, but there are so much more interesting ones! *-*
    thanks for showing us

    Hey! Was wondering for Porcellio Werneri how moist is the enclosure? Some say they like a more dry environment with ventilation while yours seems to have a more moist environment WITH a lot of ventilation. Any tips? Also have you used high calcium cricket diet as a staple before?

    Maybe some of the problems that you have with certain species is that you don't have enough of them because maybe they are too expensive a piece or something. Isopods look very social. They hang out together. I'm sure they are happier when they surrounded by a of their congenital cousins, they are the funniest.

      Thank you for the suggestion. Definitely something worth considering!

      Isopods brains have only 4 components; that being said it doesn’t have room for “social interactions.”Therefore they run over there selves and show no awareness, thus not needing to be interactive. They are not humans, nor are they mammals. Rarely any other animals show IN NEED of interactions, thus making your hypothesis irrelevant.

    at 57:30 - did you ever determine if they were scaber orange dalmations? I have a brand new (to me) colony and these look the same. The original owner said they were powder blue crosses, but after putting them in Discord the consensus is they're orange dalmations. If so, what kind of luck, if any, did you have crossing them with others? Thank you! brand new to the hobby here.

    what's in the soil mix ?

    • @Reptiliatus
      @Reptiliatus  3 года назад

      Merci! It’s peat moss, some sand, horticultural charcoal (not much) to help drainage and purify the soil of toxins, spaghnum moss, black earth, coco chunks or orchid bark topped with lots of leaf litter! Hope this helps!
