*Go to 01:44 for actual solution. Before that I explain methods that don't work before explaining my method.*
In this quick Tutorial, I will show you how to reduce an AutoCAD .dwg file that is extremely large when it shouldn't be.
Often people try and use PURGE command and AUDIT but still find the file is large, even when there is nothing in it!.
The first part of the Video I show you what doesn't work, then I show you a method to fix the large .dwg File size.

I've tried this and it works. However, I've also tried an even more simple approach! Basically I'm using ACAD 2018 and for years in I've also was saved to 2000 format to ensure everyone sharing the dwg can open it. I've recently found out if you save to the exact format you are using i.e. 2018 the file size reduces by huge amounts! For example, A project I'm working on, the file gradually increased to over 62mb whilst saving it in ACAD 2000 format. I SAVED AS the exact same file with ACAD 2018 and it automatically dropped to 9.3mb! Tried the SAVE AS again with ACAD 2000 format and back up to 60mb. Simple lesson learnt.
Thank you, Smarts way better than other guys
Thank you very much. I was looking for a long time to find the solution. In Autocad 2010 you could make the original dwg edit copy and then edit paste to another dwg. But not in 2012 and after
Thank you so much it worked. If your file became larger after dxfout. Do dxfout again on the new dxf file. Then save overwrite your original file.Happened to me.It worked.
You are my master of ACAD !!!
Great video but it couldn't solve my issue so, I released "Autocad SuperPurge Command"
Yeah, i saw your video on this topic.
Are you kidding telling that and won´t giving a link?
Another probably easier way to try is to select the objects and save them out as a 'WBLOCK' one step and works most times.
Command: purge enter check the purge all then command: audit then type y enter 50 percent of ur dwg. File will reduced thats the proper cleaning of files
I will try that Right now... Amazing
Very nice, I went from 10mb to 1mb
TY
This really helped me out alot! thank you!!!
Hi Mark, great, I'm glad this video helped you. It's always nice to read positive comments on my videos.
Hey Andrew, i needed to do this again to a drawing and worked like a bomb! keeping in favorites ha ha ha
Wow, its works.. Thank you Andrew, you're Awesome. im really frustated looking for solution, but this is legit solution.
Excellent Andrew, thanks a lot
Thanks Mohamed for you comment, I hope it fixed your issue
Sometimes it is useful, the problem is with this command/method is, remove all inserted objects such like.jped .png and etcetera.
thank you for such a helpful video
I'm having the problem of trying to make the pdf plotted file from AutoCAD to be smaller, because it's taking forever to print some of the pages. It's really frustrating!
Thanks a lot. It help me to reduce my workmate crap file from 6MB to 81K
thanks for all
thanks for your comment
holy moly it works..thank bro.
how come when i try DXFOUT, it rise to a staggering 74MB from 8MB?
Hi Reuizi, if you continue to DXFOUT again and again say 4 or more times, does it get bigger each time? Sometimes when you first DXFOUT it gets bigger before it gets smaller. If you are still having troubles, you can email me your file and I can have a look if you want. Email is contact@thirdistudio.com.au
since when i directly DXFOUT , the dxf file is error, so i try making it a new block dwg,
.
from 8MB -> WBOCK -> 6MB -> DXF -> 27MB -> DXF -> 14MB -> save to cad -> Purge + Audit -> 149KB ARRGHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
so did it work then? If it got down to 149kb sounds like it did.
the problem start when the DXF file cannot be open (it got error saying something about missing style?), and the file is 74MB.
i watch other video of why cannot copy paste to other dwg , becos its all the same symptom of this huge file , i try to block it first, then follow your procedure, and DXF file can be open this time
anyway, thank you soo much, i try to put DGNpurge , nothing happen becos its using 3rd party application that im not soo expert on, your method is the best by using whats already in the system :D
This worked for me i had a 40 MB file after first dxf it became 240 MB the second dxf became 145 MB and the final file was reduced to 5.5 MB only
glad this worked for you too, great end result for file size., thank you for your comment.
@@AwesomeAndrew thank you for saving my work
omg this works, thank you!!
thanks andrew , i tried it for an autocad structural detailing big file, this problem i face it every day with most of my cad files , but it didnt work for me , after i saved my first dxf file , i tried to open it but it give me a blank new page without any drawings on it .. idont know the proplem , i tried to save a general autocad file , but it didnt work also , do you know where is the proplem ?.. thank you any way for your help .
will it effect the real figure or dimensions or any changes between real drawing vs dxf file
Thanks a lot! really help!, at 1st saving to dxf my file gets larger like 4x, then after another dfxout, it still larger than my orginal file size, after purging all the 2nd dxf, and saving itt as dwg file it is now only 10% of its original file size!,
Glad to hear it worked for you
Any suggestions on what I may have done wrong? Was trying to reduce a 25MB file but the dxf became 10x as big as that. I tried opening the dxf file to purge but there was nothing to purge. Thoughts?
Hi Aaron. I have seen this happen before on a file, but that was quite some time ago so I can't recall what the issue was.
Do you know if the file you are trying to reduce was created in AutoCAD or another program? It might help to know what software it was created in if not AutoCAD.
With the purge command, did you use the standard purge where a window pops up and you have a list of things to choose from?
If so, try this. At the Command Prompt
Type -PURGE (you want the minus symbol at the start of the word)
Then type: R (then press enter)
Then type: (just press enter key)
They type: N (then press enter)
Type -PURGE again
Then type: Z (then press enter)
Type -PURGE again
Then type: E (then press enter)
Now type AUDIT (then press enter)
Then type: Y (then press enter)
Then Type -PURGE
Then type: A
Then type: (just press enter key)
Then type: N (then press enter)
Now try following this video again and see if it helps. Good Luck
I have the same problem: ARK-CAD originated --> Aoutocad *.dwg : DWG is 9500 KB and dfx file becomes 49 500 KB :D
thanx for this video this video only for 2d drawing, do you have any idea for 3d
When I trying to save the files as dxf it's going to be very big size
THANKS
How to undo like that, andrew ? thanx before.
this is black magic!
sorry it did not work for me. My dxf bloated more than dwg and again second time stay big. Thanks anyway
amazing!
unbelievable, but I'll try.....
Well, I tried this in AutoCAD 2017. My file went from 22mb up to 95mb as a dxf file...
Does this method work for reducing 3D model sizes?
in my case, from 25MB.. when I dxfout, it becomes 190MB... super weird
same here
Thanks a lot
Lol my 45MB dwg turns into a 300MB dxf file...
hi andrew great videos they seem to have helped me so far im making a mip panels for a 737 and having trouble cutting depths for lines and it doesnt move from pint to piont.if noticed some of the cad files i have downloaded the out line cuts are blue but there are red doted lines everywhere none of mine have this and dont understand what these are for as im a newbie at this regard marc
hi Marc, sorry for the late reply, I didn't see your comment until now. I'm not familiar with what you are doing with the panels as my back ground is in architectural drafting. If you want to send me a CAD file you are talking about I can have a look at it to try and understand what you mean about the lines. my email is contact@thirdistudio.com.au
I went from 40 MB to 152 KB just by copying my drawing into a new file.
i did another video on that too as an alternative method.
I've done this, bringing to larger
Hi Mostafa, not sure exactly why that is happening, but I would suggest trying the command AUDIT on the drawing to see if there are any errors. If so, after the AUDIT command has fixed the errors, run the PURGE command and get rid of everything you can
UNABLE TO SAVE
HOW TO FIX THIS
I tried it but I took FATAL ERROR. Do you know why?
Alper Kutalmış Çiftçi its hard to say what caused the fatal error. Could be the drawing itself or the autocad version you are using with that particular file. You could try to test this method using a different file and see what happens
Thank you Awesome:)
made mine larger.
I like thanks you sir
SUPPERB.....
hii when i do the some but my file size is increase what i do ?
Sometimes the file gets bigger before it gets smaller. If it still doesn't work, you can send the file to me to see if I can work out what the problem is. Email: contact@thirdistudio.com.au
Andrew the dxf file gets bigger in my case. Tried saving in to dxf thrice. Any solution so far?
Hi Bashir, are you able to send me your file and then I can have a look at it for you Email: contact@thirdistudio.com.au
hi andrew, I'm using autocad 2010.. in a case when copy clipboard from another file to my main sheet it contains something from newer version of autocad. when i save it the file sizes just so really exploded l, it touch 182mb. pls help me, thanks for your help you are amazing
i have try the tutorial video do, audit then purge, but my files large now is 2gb :(
Hi Rizal,
First thing that comes to mind is that your AutoCAD version may be saving to an earlier version than 2010.
I AutoCAD, type OPTIONS at the command prompt. A window will own with tab names. The 3rd tab from the left should read "Open and Save", click on that tab (should be next to Display tab)
The top left there shouls be a drop down box that says "Save As" and in the box will have an AutoCAD version listed as the default saving version.
Tell me what version is the default, but also left click the drop down box and make sure AutoCAD 2010 is selected.
Then click Apply button at bottom of window, then click OK button. Now save your drawing and let me know if the file sized reduced?
Hi Andrew
I have the same problem as Rizal. My drawings increase if I follow your video tutorial. I am using version 2018.
