My heart dropped when Nene fell! I'm so worried about her, she's obviously lost a lot of weight and looks almost skeletal. I hope the zoo will do their very best to make her as comfortable as possible, fighting Annie off at every turn is definitely not helping her. @@CaseyNahan It was two or three days ago, it was shown on another creator's channel. Nene was up on top of a platform, about eight or ten feet off the ground. She then tried to move away from Annie into the ropes, but her grip slipped and she fell onto the concrete.
Nene😞 her right hip seems to be giving her trouble. I wish Shabani would stop Annie from messing with Nene when she doesn’t feel well. She is growing more feeble and they all know that. They know a lot more than we humans know about one another 😢💕
If Shabain cannot stop Annie from bothering Nene then it’s up to the Zoo handlers. They may have to move Annie. I am 70 and love my family and friends but there are times I don’t want to be bothered and want to be left alone.

Its not Annie's fault, these zoo's are keeping the young gorillas in their home group for too long because they don't have anywhere to put them. Same with gentaro, kyo, and all of haoko's daughters.

This was a tough watch. 😢. I know gorillas are highly social, but maybe it’s time to separate Nene from the troop, for her safety. It seems as if she is fine being alone. It’s the others that will have to adjust.
Wouldn't be better if they placed Nene in a separate environment like Fatou? The bullying won't stop because that's how gorillas act, and her body is unusually old, gorillas don't live this long in the wild. She needs special care.
I have said this before and gotten jumped on in the comments. Nene would be just fine being on her own, I think, without the pressure of being lowest ranker in the troop thus open for harassment from Annie. While it would be difficult for the family for a bit after taking Nene to another enclosure, they would adjust, and Nene would get some peace IMO. Fatou is proof that elderly female gorillas can do quite well on their own.

I definitely agree this would be the best option - Nene mostly just wants to be left alone at this point and the other apes do nothing but stress her out. But it's possible the zoo doesn't have the facilities, given they're still keeping Kiyomasa and Shabani together, constantly posturing and fighting for dominance, long after one of them would have been driven off in the wild.

Annie is literally stalking Nene. Given the chance, I’ll wager she would just finish ol’ Nene off and send her to the next life. It’s a cruel world … the animal kingdom. Childhood trauma is long remembered… even with Gorillas it seems. I’m not a big fan of Nene, but it’s hard to watch her decline as well as Annie’s relentless harassment. Godspeed old queen
Realizing the age of Nene and how Annie gets with her and Nene has her pride, she will give to her last breath not to let Annie show her up. Seeing these falls. I had chest pains. My mom heard my gasps and asked what is wrong. My mom is 93 and in excellent shape. Only recently retired after 67 yrs. We watched again. 💔 😥 😔 After fall no.2, the zoo should have had in place some type of getting all out and away from Nene and having her seen be vet. I wish the zoo would separate Annie - put her outside or something to protect Nene. I know why Annie stays after her but this is ridiculous. Are they just going to let Nene fall from a platform and die? Nene seems a bit better but after today, I fear she will be worse than before. The falls on that concrete flooring on old bones already compromised was difficult to watch...😢...her will is there, but the body isn't. Perhaps they can let the others out and let her rest a bit without distractions...this was difficult to see no doubt.
Shabani and Ai would not leave Nene behind whilst they go outside, Shabani wouldn’t even leave her behind when she refused to come out of the basement. One of his jobs as leader of the troop is to keep his family together to protect them all. I do not have the answers on the best way to care for Nene , have to put our trust in the keepers, they know Nene and it has been their care that has enabled Nene to live to a grand old age.

When it comes to this type of situation to keep her safe, the keepers have the power to separate them at least to keep her from being killed before our eyes. I'm sure they have other areas within that structure to house her temporarily until things settle down or she gets help from a veterinary staff. There's separation in zoos for conflicts all the time for all types of animals.

She does not have strength, it looks like the opposite. She is still feisty as ever, but she has fallen a few times in the past few days. That shows exactly how weak she is. Hopefully she will continue to eat and regain her strength.

I think what Annie doing is trying to establish dominance over Nene. For the most part it is working, but Nene shows just how dominant she is by nature when chasing after her and Annie does temporarily back away. Gorillas stalk to show dominance over the one who is supposed to move out of the way because they’re less dominant. I’m sure Nene’s behaviour towards Annie as a child doesn’t help. Nothing like working up a good appetite by telling off a subordinate, right Nene? 😍

The Zoo has invited us into these animals lives. Im sure they care deeply as they are in their lives up close. Seems we are part of this worried nervous family. How can we help our Nene. Much sadness
Sometimes in the animal kingdom family members will "provoke" an ill family member to "snap" them back to normal. I once saw a male cardinal peck his mate on the head until she regained consciousness from flying into a window. It was horrifying to watch but then I understood. I just can't imagine Annie as being vicious. Maybe I am naive but interesting observation. Bless our precious Nene. ❤❤😥❤❤
The fact that, even after that fall, she got up and kept pursuing Annie shows what a tough old gorilla she is. And when Annie looked like she was about to do it again, Nene getting to her feet and yelling (13:05) was enough to drive her off (and somehow Nene went and made that jump again after, apparently just to prove she still could).
Nene shouldn't have to defend herself from Annie all the time. She clearly wanted to go outside. It's dangerous for her inside now, with all the bars and ropes! Falls could be detrimental at her age. Please 🙏🏼 make better provisions for her in the future. ❤

Poor Nene❤️😢, Annie is spoiled brat that needs to be removed from the troop, Shabani is even fearful and submissive to her, she is showing high amounts of aggression and id a danger to Nene, should at least be put in her place or at least moved. I wouldn’t be surprised if Kiyomasa gets seriously injured for defending his mother, shabani has been known To attack anyone that challenges or defends themselves against Annie attacks or harassment.
You don't seem to know very much about this group or gorillas at all. Shabani is not submissive to his daughter. Imagine a silverback being submissive to any female. Lmfao. There are a lot of reasons why things are the way they are between annie and nene, unfortunately that will never change. If they were to remove anyone from the group it would be nene, so they can treat her separately until she either gets better or passes.

It looked like Nene was going to eat a little until Annie showed up. I know that Nene hasn't ever really shown Annie any care or compassion but I really wish that Annie could find it in her heart to show her grandmother a little kindness in her more fragile years. Gorillas know more about gorillas than we humans do. Maybe engaging her, getting her to get angry and chase Annie away is what she needs. I obviously don't know, I'm just wondering. It was good to see a little fight in her and moving about more but it broke my heart & concerned me when she fell. That was a pretty high fall for an old lady whose not feeling well or eating. Lot of discussion about her age , not eating and fading away....lets not forget she had injuries prior to staying on the perch that first day, so I suspect something occurred leading up to this and its not just her age, also having some alone time to rest if others put outside does not equate to being 'isolated' or sedated
Shabani definitely wasn't protective today unfortunately. Very sad to see her fall almost twice. Annie has very negative vibes against Nene. Wish more could be done for Nene. Hopefully they are taking notes. Time will tell very soon with this situation 💔💔💔💔

It's a very harsh law, a few days ago Winston, a 52-year-old silverback from the San Diego Zoo, died. A few days before he had suffered a very severe attack from a young silverback.
If people are going to continue ripping Annie apart in the comments and calling her the worst kind of names, I think the channel should just turn off the comments. Obviously grown adults don’t know how to express their feelings for Nene while not spewing hate for Annie. Who are any of you to be the moral police for what these gorillas do? What I am seeing is Annie provoking a confrontation with Nene, biting her fairly severely, causing her to fall and further injure herself. Nene should be removed from these circumstances and treated for her injuries. If she isn't, I wouldn't be surprised if she died very soon. She shouldn't have to suffer in such conditions.

She is too feeble and in too much pain now, and she gets picked on. It looks to me that she knows she has had enough. She is really struggling. It is heartbreaking, but I allowed my dog to be put to sleep when he was in too much pain.

This!, to me, was the zookeeper's biggest mistake! Had they let the others outside, Nene, would be sitting in front of her favorite window or laying out in the sun, while Anne, might have been playing with Kiyo or Ai and NOT focused on Nene! Keeping them indoors only seemed to make them more anxious and had Annie, looking for trouble! I cannot help but be angry with this new Head Zookeeper! Not only did he make a very poor decision to keep them all inside, but he could not even bring himself to cut up the eggplant and other veggies for Nene! Does he really think she can bite into these very large pieces? I hope, for his sake, that he never gets old and needs dentures! Just bad decisions all around!!!!!😢
Nene did eat yesterday (This video is day before yesterday)... she nearly had a nasty fall from high up but luckily she caught hold of the bar (this is because Annie was chasing and "pranking" her). Shabani, as usual, did a great job as alpha and protector.... although he did try to bring Nene with force at some points. When you see him charging, I believe he's trying to keep the other gorillas away from Nene....as he seems to follow the same pattern each time. I believe this is why Annie had the strange expression with her teeth showing when she first comes up....because she's in the tricky situation of being next to Nene and in front of Shabani... her version of the 'pursed lips' which you'll see Shabani do whenever he is charging. As usual, she has her own style lol

Just the fall in today's video was tragic...while she got up and appeared ok, those bones are going to feel it later...and I agree with others, she needs to be separated and given a chance to heal...otherwise I'm afraid of the inevitable sooner rather than later.
Yes, I think the zoo should temporarily limit Nene’s movements - if there is a room that the other gorillas can easily see into until she eats enough to regain her strength after her bug. That way she has less chance of falling.
It's the hard floor that worries me...she can catch the ropes to help avoid a fall... but falls on concrete is brutal...at least outside is grass and softer surfaces. And it looked like she wanted to go out when she say by the door.

My only comment is Nene 🎉left the animal kingdom when she became a resident of this zoo where they are to take care of her and all animals. They are fed on a schedule given treats visitors money is asked for and received and the animals kingdom doesn't do that the last I recall.

I wish the zoo would separate Annie - put her outside or something to protect Nene. I know why Annie stays after her but this is ridiculous. Are they just going to let Nene fall from a platform and die? Nene seems a bit better but after today, I fear she will be worse than before. The falls on that concrete flooring on old bones already compromised was difficult to watch...😢...her will is there, but the body isn't. Perhaps they can let the others out and let her rest a bit without distractions...this was difficult to see no doubt.

Shabani and Ai would not leave Nene behind whilst they go outside, Shabani wouldn’t even leave her behind when she refused to come out of the basement. One of his jobs as leader of the troop is to keep his family together to protect them all. I do not have the answers on the best way to care for Nene , have to put our trust in the keepers, they know Nene and it has been their care that has enabled Nene to live to a grand old age.

When it comes to this type of situation to keep her safe, the keepers have the power to separate them at least to keep her from being killed before our eyes. I'm sure they have other areas within that structure to house her temporarily until things settle down or she gets help from a veterinary staff. There's separation in zoos for conflicts all the time for all types of animals.
I understand that everyone is stressed watching this situation unfold, but there are a few important things to keep in mind.
First, the zoo staff likely notices these behaviors before we do and is actively monitoring the animals’ health, ensuring the best plan of action for Nene.
Second, separating members of the group can be extremely stressful and, in some cases, may do more harm than good.
Lastly, even though it’s difficult to watch the dynamics between Annie and Nene, and we may think Shabani should act differently, we must remember that these are non-human animals. Despite their intelligence, they still operate within their own social hierarchy, a complex system that can be challenged by other group members.
We’re fortunate to be so invested in these troops thanks to zoos, but in reality, these animals should be in the wild, free from our watchful eyes. It’s important to avoid judging them for not handling situations the way we might expect. After all, they’re simply being what they are-animals.

I think what Annie doing is trying to establish dominance over Nene. For the most part it is working, but Nene shows just how dominant she is by nature when chasing after her and Annie does temporarily back away. Gorillas stalk to show dominance over the one who is supposed to move out of the way because they’re less dominant. I’m sure Nene’s behaviour towards Annie as a child doesn’t help. Nothing like working up a good appetite by telling off a subordinate, right Nene? 😍

Sometimes in the animal kingdom family members will "provoke" an ill family member to "snap" them back to normal. I once saw a male cardinal peck his mate on the head until she regained consciousness from flying into a window. It was horrifying to watch but then I understood. I just can't imagine Annie as being vicious. Maybe I am naive but interesting observation. Bless our precious Nene. ❤❤😥❤❤
The fact that, even after that fall, she got up and kept pursuing Annie shows what a tough old gorilla she is. And when Annie looked like she was about to do it again, Nene getting to her feet and yelling (13:05) was enough to drive her off (and somehow Nene went and made that jump again after, apparently just to prove she still could).

You don't seem to know very much about this group or gorillas at all. Shabani is not submissive to his daughter. Imagine a silverback being submissive to any female. Lmfao. If they were to remove anyone from the group it would be nene, so they can treat her separately until she either gets better or passes.

It looked like Nene was going to eat a little until Annie showed up. I know that Nene hasn't ever really shown Annie any care or compassion but I really wish that Annie could find it in her heart to show her grandmother a little kindness in her more fragile years. Gorillas know more about gorillas than we humans do. Maybe engaging her, getting her to get angry and chase Annie away is what she needs. I obviously don't know, I'm just wondering. It was good to see a little fight in her and moving about more but it broke my heart & concerned me when she fell. That was a pretty high fall for an old lady whose not feeling well or eating. Lot of discussion about her age , not eating and fading away....lets not forget she had injuries prior to staying on the perch that first day, so I suspect something occurred leading up to this and its not just her age, also having some alone time to rest if others put outside does not equate to being 'isolated' or sedated

What I am seeing is Annie provoking a confrontation with Nene, biting her fairly severely, causing her to fall and further injure herself. Nene should be removed from these circumstances and treated for her injuries. If she isn't, I wouldn't be surprised if she died very soon. She shouldn't have to suffer in such conditions.

This!, to me, was the zookeeper's biggest mistake! Had they let the others outside, Nene, would be sitting in front of her favorite window or laying out in the sun, while Anne, might have been playing with Kiyo or Ai and NOT focused on Nene! Keeping them indoors only seemed to make them more anxious and had Annie, looking for trouble! I cannot help but be angry with this new Head Zookeeper! Not only did he make a very poor decision to keep them all inside, but he could not even bring himself to cut up the eggplant and other veggies for Nene! Does he really think she can bite into these very large pieces? I hope, for his sake, that he never gets old and needs dentures! Just bad decisions all around!!!!!😢
Nene did eat yesterday (This video is day before yesterday)... she nearly had a nasty fall from high up but luckily she caught hold of the bar (this is because Annie was chasing and "pranking" her). Shabani, as usual, did a great job as alpha and protector.... although he did try to bring Nene with force at some points. When you see him charging, I believe he's trying to keep the other gorillas away from Nene....as he seems to follow the same pattern each time. I believe this is why Annie had the strange expression with her teeth showing when she first comes up....because she's in the tricky situation of being next to Nene and in front of Shabani... her version of the 'pursed lips' which you'll see Shabani do whenever he is charging. As usual, she has her own style lol
I watched that vid, my heart dropped when she almost fell off the higher bar...😮. Just the fall in today's video was tragic...while she got up and appeared ok, those bones are going to feel it later...and I agree with others, she needs to be separated and given a chance to heal...otherwise I'm afraid of the inevitable sooner rather than later.
Yes, I think the zoo should temporarily limit Nene’s movements - if there is a room that the other gorillas can easily see into until she eats enough to regain her strength after her bug. That way she has less chance of falling.
