    I' m glad for you getting to wonderful historic Brattle Books. I got to the original and planned to return the next month as I loved it, of course, then tragedy struck. This was before you were born, so thankfully, you neednt miss it. And the recent one is much larger.

    Also, HOLD UP. Dostoevsky had short stories?! Here I am, intimidated by all his huge works but wanting to dive in. All the while, this exists! (Forgive my ignorance. I am a product of the Chicago Publik Skool Sistem.)

    You certainly found some nice editions. Your copy of Nicholas & Alexandra suggests to me it is time to reread this great book. Your comments about Constance Garnett were right on - I generally prefer Pevear & Volokhonsky, but was introduced to Dostoevsky and the other Russians by Garnett.

      Thank you! It was so cool being able to see it in person and shop there. I was first introduced to Russian literature in high school with "The Death of Ivan Ilyich" and just kept going from there! As far as the history element goes I read Robert Massie's biography of Catherine the Great and simply was struck by the history of the country and wanted to know more!

    I’ve always found Magarshack dependable for a good read. (I don’t know Russian.) He was Penguin’s go-to translator, though gradually getting supplanted (not _Oblamov_ yet). I think I also have a Dostoevsky biography by him which I have not read; but his _Crime and Punishment, Brothers Karamazov_ and half of _The Idiot_ yes. (Unlike you I’ve probably had my fill of Russian authors for a while. 😂)
    An admirable haul. Does Brattle always put pricetags sideways on the upper left? (I’ve don’t recall that from Steve’s.)

    • @MicahCummins
      @MicahCummins  Год назад +1

      Ah, very interesting, David. I don't know if I have read any translations by Magarshack yet... I will have to scan my shelves and see if I have any of his works. I didn't realize those little price stickers were even on the books until after I filmed! I think Steve must remember to peel them off first, haha.

    Hey Micah, just curious if you’ve read or heard of Karl Schlögel’s book The Soviet Century: Archaeology of a Lost World. It came out this year in English and I saw it at my library recently. I’m not too big on non-fiction so I probably won’t end up reading the whole thing when I check it out but it seems like something you’d really like so I thought I’d put it on your radar. Stay well!
