Accordion Crimes by Annie Proulx Book Discussion
I’ve read a bunch of those. Anything David McCullough is terrific. Currently reading the British are Coming by Atkinson. John Adams is my favorite book about one of my favorite founding fathers. I seem to never get enough of reading about the Revolutionary War and Colonial America.
I found my twin. We look so alike 😂
Micah, I am a friend of your mom’s from B4NP. Tell her to email me. Tell her all our conversations on B4NP disappeared along with her email. I love your RUclips! -Molly
Oooft. My first science fiction too and boy this was a difficult read. I feel like i lost a lot, i dont have a lot of imagination so heavy description is hard. Loved the themes though.
Thanks for wonderful description. I think, unlike Chekhov’s earlier works, which often portrayed women as passive recipients of male desire, “A Calamity” presents a female protagonist with active agency, whose desires significantly influence the narrative’s progression.
Hi Micah I thought I had read all of Forster's novels but watching the film this week on RUclips I realised I hadn't read 'Where Angels Fear To Tread' even though I had a copy! The film really didn't work for me although it was brilliantly done I have a feeling they thought they would be able to flesh out the book with the action and photography but they were not successful and I felt the end product didn't really make much sense I felt the same about the Merchant Ivory adaptation of 'Maurice' which is a much better film but still has weaknesses which are not in the original novel If you read the novel of 'Maurice' the film makes much more sense It made me read 'Where Angels Fear To Tread' this week and I found the reason the film is slightly baffling is because the novel is too! It explained a lot when I watched your review to hear it was his first book What's incredible about Forster is that even when the story is thin he holds you with the beauty of his writing With all it's perculiarities it's still a book worth reading Thanks for the great review 👍🏻
Micah you’re back! So glad to see you posting again you’ve been missed. Hope all has been well….looking forward to seeing more videos and reading recommendations. 👏
Thanks for sharing your library Micah. Don’t apologize for not “ locking into” the Goldfinch, I had the same problem and couldn’t finish it. I’m not sure it’s worth a second try. On the positive side I agree that the Gentleman from Moscow was great reading experience. Like you I read it at the time of Covid which could definitely help me relate. Great work on your presentations.
Omg!!! I love Emma🎉🎉🎉🎉 I'm currently reading The Return of the Native, loving it so far!
Added several of these to my list. Great video thanks. I’m finishing up a People’s History and it’s a big book-but very good. In fiction realm, I highly recommend “A Terrible Country” by Keith Gessen. Thought it did a really nice job depicting somewhat modern (circa 2009?) Russia.
Ty for this video ❤ Doing a class reading and this really helped me 😊
The Big Burn was great!
Thank you for this, I had a dream about this play and I needed a synopsis and this helped
Bro you are so cute, and your passion for reading is inspiring. Love the channel, keep it up!
Just about over halfway through The Apology of Socrates - Criton by Plato. Dusting off the classics to prepare for going back to uni
Good to see you, Micah! I haven't heard of HW Brands before - that American West history looks fascinating. So does the Grand Canyon book! The Big Burn was excellent. The other Teddy Roosevelt book I loved was River of Doubt. Some great books coming up for you!
In relation to the Gold Rush book, do you know the song Gold Rush Brides by the band 10,000 Manics? If not look for the MTV RUclips video where Natalie Merchant, the lead singer, begins by reading from women’s journals that inspired the song. The book she’s reading draws from the collection of primary source documents called Women’s Diaries of the Western Journey, edited by Lilian Schlissel. It’s really a remarkable and important document of early America, Western Expansion and the overlooked experiences of women’s lives during that time. It’s also some of the first and most important writing by women in America and in my mind is equal in importance to the Slave Narratives, in unlocking history not adequately covered by most patriarchal tellings. It’s really gut wrenching stuff that gives you a window into another time and experience. The song does a phenomenal job of distilling the essence of the collection into a poem like overview.
So good to see you again, Micah :)
I love that bookshelf set up. I just found your channel but look forward to more content.
Fun video--looking forward to your reviews of these. Theodore Roosevelt is fascinating.
Great bunch of books you've picked there, along the lines of my favorite genre, pioneers of 1850-ish era, I never get tired of reading about all those people📚📚
Have you read Bury My Heart At Wounded Knee by Dee Brown? I’m not usually into American history but I listened to a podcast about Custer and the subsequent wounded knee massacre and found the whole story extremely tragic but interesting
I just finished Wilderness Warrior a few days ago. It's a fantastic book. I encourage you to look into Brinkley's subsequent books: "Rightful Heritage" (covering the FDR years) and "Silent Spring Revolution" covering JFK, Rachel Carson, LBJ, Richard Nixon, and the Great Environmental Awakening. Brinkley's books are all great and well worth the time invested in reading them.
Ooh. I feel a Roosevelt reading binge coming on. Definitely, need to get my health in order like he did. Maybe hire a boxing coach...maybe...just read about it...
hah! nice rabbit hole you've gone down! I also meant to ask- have you checked out the new kindle line released last week? Do you plan to buy any of the models?
Maybe controversial but I'm currently reading it and I don't know if I'll finish. Personally I think the story is fine but for what it is, it's very long and I get the feeling that Clarke was like, afraid of writing too little so she wrote too much
Getting new books is always exciting!!!❤
I haven’t read any Brands yet, but I imagine he’s quite stylishly composed on the page. His talks are delightful
He most certainly is! I just started “Dreams of El Dorado” yesterday and I have really been enjoying it so far.
Wonderful book haul, Micah. I hope you enjoy these new treasures. 😊
Thank you, Pat! ☺️
A nice haul indeed. I'll have to keep my eyes open for some H.W. Brands books on my next book hunt.
Thanks! Wishing you luck on your search!
Yeah, Micah. H.W. Brandsis one of my favorites also . Interestly,, I haven't read one of the books you listed. However, Traitor to his Class has been on my reading list for some time. I'll be interested in your thoughts on it. I've read several books on FDR. Always has been one of my favorite Presidents. BTW, Brands just recently a new book called " America First" its about the political battle between FDR and Charles Lindbergh over whether America should get involved in WWII.
Oh , it is you buying my shopping cart books at Thrift afterwall .... -_-
Uh oh… sorry about that. 🫣
Congrats!!!
Thank you!
Brands is such an interesting writer. He picks interesting subjects, doesn’t he? I attended a talk he gave at a local History Center fundraiser in York PA of all places. 🥰.
Wow, so the book is fairly different than the movie. Almost sounds like the movie is much better since the other characters are more prominent also his dad even tho he isn’t on screen all that much. Love the movie.
I'd like to read about westward expansion at some point.
I’m hopeful that “Dreams of El Dorado” will cover that element as I want to read up on it as well!
You can’t go wrong with a book haul!
Thanks, Sarah! I completely agree. :)
Todd here. Nice video Micah! I've picked up a couple books on the american west this year from one of my local used bookstores. I also want to see this new western saga movie by Kevin Costner titled Horizon. Have you hear about it? I saw a couple history titles I was interested in at Barnes & Noble. A new book by Dan Jones on Henry V and a book on the American Revolution titled Liberty is Sweet. I hope you have a nice Autumn!
I've only read Dreams of El Dorado: A History of the American West by Brands. I found his writing to be very accessible so I would definitely read more by him. I think you'll like this book.
That’s a great book haul! I haven’t read anything by H W Brands yet, but this convinced me to look into it. If you had to recommend just one of his books, which would it be? Happy reading!
Your enthusiasm is off the charts! Enjoy reading all your great books and happy autumn!
Thank you! I’m definitely excited about this batch! Happy autumn to you!
Thank you very much, you have been captivating and very interesting!!
I appreciate that, thank you!
