Where I live, about 10 days ago, the temperature dropped to minus 20 degrees Fahrenheit, which killed many EVs as they could not be charged. Would this Macan be able to handle such low temperature?
EV manufacturers are working to solve this issue, however i doubt this Porche will be able to do it effectively unless they've got crazy new battery tech to fix it. Largely the easiest way to fix this is by warming the battery (similar to warming an ICE).
20 degrees does not kill the EV unless you were already at 10-15% residual charge. Key is to keep it topped off in the winter time. 30-40% loss of range is a real winter time issue.
367 mile EV range sounds about right for over a week worth of commuting. But let's be honest those are the inflated range test distances almost nobody in the real world would be able to achieve. I'd give it 325 at best, but still great for charging maybe 4 times a month.
@@mcsike7264 20k of that is just the Porshe badge lol Even still, the top spec of each is $95k to $68k So can't call it cheap And this could arguably compete with the X
Nice. My Genesis GV60 sport plus was about the same price as the Macan 4. The genesis is a bit smaller, a bit faster but about 100 miles behind on range. That 4 model will sell well I should think. I like the look of the turbo.
@@Saddex still won’t be usable for winter road trips. I’ve had multiple friends think their battery was full. After 2 days being garaged in the cold it’s not. The system says they have 250 miles but it runs out after 125. We need 700 mile range for EVs to be practical beyond commuting cars.
@@arcadialive4265 do they have a heat pump? If not, yes, a 50% range loss is probably going to happen in well below freezing temps. With heat pump, 30-40% is more realistic below freezing. Highway range is of course going to be even less vs WLTP but that applies to ICE vehicles too. For a lot of people it will probably be adequate, though ideally the summer range should probably be in excess of 450 miles to be considered practical across the board in Europe. The distances are relatively short and winters mild. In the EU, one of the planned provisions of the Euro 7 standard, mandatory winter range tests, was unfortunately scrapped. That was stupid because it would provide a lot of certainty instead of having to assume about a third less at freezing which is average loss demonstrated in tests. More without a heat pump and at colder temps.
@@Saddex they are great daily driver cars. Just get questionable for road trips. And yes, I googled the model just to make sure. They do have heat pumps. I have been told the worst they got was 125 mile range, when it said much higher on the gauge. I also guess the car can also drain while turned off during cold weather
@@arcadialive4265 mine loses about 1% every 2 days at -10 C or below. Though yeah, probably I assume it's a combination of things, including temps in that range. Although since the trend is for batteries to get larger capacities with higher energy density, the range loss in winter should get proportionally smaller to some extent, as the energy used to heat the cabin per unit of time won't change and it takes much less energy to keep the cabin warm vs heating it up from cold even when driving a longer distance. Unless though you precondition the cabin while plugged in but then the overall loss should be even smaller proportionally. I generally don't believe in telling people what to do, though another option available to lower consumption is to use heated seats and steering vs the fans that could be considered. Though yeah, for winter roadtripping EVs leave a bit to be desired even if I believe 700 miles WLTP probably is a bit overkill. 500 is probably going to be the sweet spot for the majority of people.

Great summary, I love this and feels like Porsche got it right with the Macan, most notably on the entry level price - I thought it’d be way more expensive. Looking forward to seeing the real world range on this, which I suspect will only increase in difference from the Model Y (which range is highly overstated).
Err, the entry level Macan, which has pretty woeful performance... with a very modest splattering of options, £80K!!! Same as I paid for range topping Macan GTS. The 'turbo' which in itself is a joke to give it that title, £100k before options. You think Porsche have got it right? Jesus wept. The Macan's USP as a premium compact SUV was the price and what you got for your money, not now.
TBH, if you want an electric Porsche, this makes a whole lot more sense than the Taycan. The Macan 4 has bigger battery and a WAY more range than a base Taycan, while costing 10+k less. You can upgrade the Taycan with a bigger battery, but it'll still have less kwh, and still have much less range. Lots of reports about Taycan's losing so much value on the 2nd hand market, well this will only make it worst.
Not forgetting the Porche options trick. So now I believe I have the plan. Let a few people buy these with some great optional extras. Say 90k. Wait 6 years and go to British car auctions and buy one for 27k and then flip it for 30k. Most of the lease companies dump their Suvs their after 6 years when they are getting close to worthless. Or better still buy a Byd Suv after 6 years for 14k. Ok. All clear now.

@@tor-Norge Minus 20 degrees. Reread my comment.

367 miles in warm weather. Probably 157 in cold.
Heat pump is standard equipment in this, so expect around 30% less or about 257 in winter. The less powerful variant should make around 266 in winter.
Porsche is going to regret going all electric soon, sales are going to take dive in the future, ask anyone who owns an ICE powered Porsche if they would trade theirs to get this crap, the answer including myself is hell no
