    Maybe I missed it but I didn't spot any of the Porsche triangle P markings on the parts in the b-roll. What I did notice are a lot of VW AG markings. No surprise there as the front suspension is clearly Audi's typical four link arrangement. The drive units marked as VW AG is another hint that this is a Porsche rework of Audi's homework. So, the same formula as always for the Macan which indicates that it is a successful program.

    • @pan4632
      @pan4632 Год назад

      Out of spec reviews said that when he interviewed the Audi engineers for Q6 e tron, they claimed they did the vast majority of the engineering on the platform compared to Porsche. Predictably, the Porsche engineers claim that isn't the case.

    • @LZ6U
      @LZ6U Год назад +1

      Porsche deserves some credit for taking an Audi platform and giving it a more sporting character. Porsche has been making cars from Audi parts since the 70's, VW parts since day 1. Porsche's volume products have been re-engineered VW or Audi parts. The 914, 924/944, Cayenne, and Macan have gone a long way to keep Porsche alive. Porsche's Boxster borrowed a gearbox from the boring Audi B/C platforms.
      To make the Macan a differentiated product, I'm certain Porsche's calibration targets were different from Audi's. Porsche worked on marketing, styling, systems calibration/optimization. The hard points as they are known are quite certainly Audi. The Macan is reciprocity for the e-tron GT. Try to find an Audi logo on the parts used in assembly of the e-tron GT. Under the e-tron GT all you'll find are Porsche logos.

I also have owned and currently own several other cars including other Porsches. I personally like engine noise so this car is not for me. I also frequently take long road trips and have no patience for changing on the go. However, I’m sure this will be a good seller for Porsche. Personally I think the whole gas vs EV argument is silly. Both have their purpose and pros and cons. We have a Jaguar I-PACE EV as our daily driver. This replaced a pretty good ICE daily (older panamera turbo), and I can honestly say the Jag is better in every single way. I don’t miss the panamera one bit. With the Jag, there’s no automatic transmission to get confused around town, never getting into a hot or cold car with preconditioning, there’s insane instant torque, the smoothness and refinement is unmatched (not only because no engine noise but also because the 1000 pound battery insulates you from road noise), use of space (small on the outside and big on the inside because no engine), low center of gravity, perfectly even weight distribution, and even though on paper the panamera was faster 0-60, in real life around town it’s not even close - the Jag would be gone before the panamera would even get into the right gear. We bought our Jag used CPO, and yes we’ve lost money on its value - but the same would have been true of the panamera or a Jaguar f-pace ICE suv. All luxury cars / daily driver values are dropping right now. EVs may be dropping quicker, but you also spend less on fuel and maintenance to make up for it. The only maintenance on our Jag in two years is a cabin air filter. Having said all of that, we also have two sports cars (manual transmission c7 corvette stingray and an older Mini Cooper JCW), and I have no desire for either of those to be electric. The whole point of those cars is a visceral, loud, connected experience with a manual transmission. I know there is a Boxster EV coming soon and I’m sure it’ll be great, but I have no interest, even as a current EV owner. Sports cars should be gas powered and manual IMO. So as I said, each has their purpose. I don’t see myself going back to gas for daily driver, and I don’t see myself ever giving up gas for sports cars.

      You seem to be sidestepping the problem. If you buy and promote EV ownership of any variety, you are indirectly bringing about the end of the thing you say you want to keep. Maybe enjoy your fancy golf cart quietly because when you do it loudly like you did here it just adds fuel to the mandate fire.

Gets 40mpg in an awd vehicle with lots of room and I do what little service it needs. In 10 years (she does NOT like change or gizmos), we’ll reassess.

      Well said. I wonder if it´s going to be possible for Manufacturers like Porsche to build both in the future, EV for Macan, Taycan, Cayenne etc. and then ICE for Carrera, Cayman etc. or if it is too expensive for companies to offer both technologies. Unfortunately the sports car market is very small and many brands currently subsidize their sports cars with regular, more usable vehicles. Developing a completely different engine technology and platform just for the sports segment could be too expensive

      Yeah I tell these whingy folks, buy whatever drivetrain you want. Do you want an internal combustion drive train. Buy it - be happy. You want an electric drive train, go buy that and be happy. Neither is wrong and stop trying to make someone think that they’re wrong for liking what they like or spending their money how they see fit.

Given the amount of raucous, grousing and near foaming from the mouth anger from some of those who absolutely adore internal combustion drivetrains about how much they hate electric drivetrains and “how they all suck and are toasters with “no soul” whatever the hell thar means - I think it’s perfectly fair that someone with an EV viewpoint provide their ration and reasoned explanation. We all enjoy balance and parity - but this barely puts a finger on the scale compared to the endless mouth and finger vomit EVDTs drivers have listen to and read.

    Amazing that you guys got to do an in-depth interview with one of the engineers and Carwow can only put out a video telling the audience what they know about it; that speaks volumes to the amount of trust you've built and how comfortable the manufacturers are with knowing that you aren't going to misrepresent them (WHILE being honest to the viewers, and as you've both stated before, being honest with the viewers while maintaining a good relationship with the manufacturer is a _very_ difficult thing to do).

    I know the answer is just "Because we have to change the least things from the gas version" but I'd love to know if these companies have plans to do more with hub motors, especially now that we are seeing lighter and lighter powerful motors with things like axial flux motors coming into the lime light so there are less worries or tradeoffs with unsprung weight. It feels like a really great chance to for once significantly lower the weight of these vehicles while making the interiors more spacious, so that is one of the bigger EV changes Im waiting to happen.
    I feel as if this whole thing of having body mounted motors is really just a thing while we are in this transition phase. No doubt the future EV sportscars that will feel the best will switch to this to add lightness.

    • @air-headedaviator1805
      @air-headedaviator1805 Год назад +3

      The immediate compromise of hub motors is them being exposed to the elements. Not just moisture and dust but rocks, curbs. Wheels and suspension live in the extremes of the drive, and having your powertrain there is risky.

    • @TheBCninja
      @TheBCninja Год назад

      It won't matter how light they get. Slapping on another 45-100 pounds per wheel wrecks the driving dynamics. Now, having them inboard and that light is incredible and I'm all here for making these things lighter.

      @@air-headedaviator1805 I hear you, but its been done, and it turns out that this isnt actually that much of an issue. See the Rimac Nevera for instance or the Aptera.

    • @BeefIngot
