    Love the M43 cap, I just don't put the cockade or eagle on them. Very useful on a cold Lake Erie coastline winters day.

      Nice. I mostly use mine for re-enacting so add the cockade, but they are good hats to use so I have one without the cockade that I sometimes use when it's cold as well. Interestingly after the war, most ex-Wehrmacht personal used to wear their caps just as a cap until they fell to bits and they then got rid of them and were a common sight post war. M43 was very influential and was the inspiration for many modern caps and the Bundeswehr still use gabardine versions for drill/parade sometimes (obviously with Bundeswehr insignia).

    Elsenau in Poland makes some incredible M43s as well.

    • @thebritishww2man
      @thebritishww2man  11 месяцев назад +1

      Yes, they make very nice, high quality M43 field caps and uniforms. They use original materials, thread, buttons and for extra, even original insignia.
      I wish I could afford to get one and that's the problem I have with Elsenau, the price.
      I was looking at getting an M44 tunic from them and without insignia it was like £300 (when I looked, it might have changed now). For me, unless I become a millionaire, that is just too much for me to spend on a tunic.
      The caps were slightly more reasonable, but still a lot.
      I'm kinda kicking myself as over lockdown, I saw an Elsenau M44 tunic on eBay and it was going for £10, I forgot to bid on it and no one bought it. It was relisted a few months later and went for £150 🤦‍♂️

      Now conterrary to what the comments say below, they have got proper cotton linings. They might feel a bit strange, however I have burn tested them and they most certainly burn, rather than melt which means they are natural fibres.
      I would also suggest that you change the buttons to these after purchasing them as well: www.ebay.co.uk/itm/WWII-German-EM-field-cap-buttons-12mm-12-pcs/362309545596?hash=item545b54ee7c:g:xysAAOSwcSFbObpC

    What do you think of Elsenau caps ?

    • @thebritishww2man
      @thebritishww2man  4 года назад +2

      They look very good! They are well detailed and look pretty much identical to original WW2 ones. They are even made out of 100% wool and 100% linen or cotton for the liner and a 95% cotton 5% rayon thread like the originals. The good thing is they come with some pretty high quality insignia as well. Unfortunately for me they are a bit expensive at the moment as I am trying to save up for the massive Stoneleigh Militaria fare.

      They have proper liners made out of cotton as well, they might look a bit strange but if you wear them a lot or leave them with the liner facing up in the sun, that should help get them to be a better colour.

    Have you thought about not buying cheap, crappy items and buying higher quality items instead? I know they can be expensive but it’s definitely worth it in the long run.

    • @thebritishww2man
      @thebritishww2man  4 года назад +2

      I think that these caps I got here are good quality and a good price. It all comes down to how much I think whatever item is worth
      For me, I see no real point in paying, for example £80+ for an M43 cap, that I'm gonna throw around and use at a reenactment as when it gets damaged beyond repair I'll have to pay a lot to replace it or if it accidentally gets dropped into a fire etc. Also if I have it stolen at an event or I loose it, I'll have to pay out lots to replace it.
      I do try to get high quality items for a low price and I think most of the stuff I have are that. I understand though, expensive stuff can be the best, however I have purchased a second hand Robert Lubestein EREL M43 field cap and imo it is pretty poor compared to his other items. New it would have cost £45, I got it for £20 when I started out. It has a black lining which is padded and makes it really warm at reenactments and when it's hot, it's dangerous to wear.
      Now that compared to these caps which are a 1/4 of the price and not made by a big brand, imo, they are better than it. Now I do think that Robert Lubestein EREL are very good quality on everything else that I've seen from them so far, but my point is that if you pay more, it doesn't automatically mean you've got something that is more accurate.
      But I do understand what you're saying, higher quality usually comes with price, however I try to get some of my stuff second hand that is made by the good manufacturers as I don't think they are worth their original price. Even if you look back to the time, there would be no way that the Wehrmacht would be paying the equivalent in Reichsmarks of £80 now for their M43 caps as if would have bankrupted them.
      Also because of UK legislation, I'm putting priority on building up my deactivated weapons collection before its too late and we are in a situation where they are all welded solid and you can't move any parts which is part of the reason why I have been going for lower priced stuff so that I have more money to get either deacts or original pieces of kit.

    Mil-Tec caps?

    • @thebritishww2man
      @thebritishww2man  Месяц назад

      I don't think so. I'm not 100% sure who Mil-Tech gets their caps from, but I don't think they are from here.
      These caps seem pretty good and I've used them for as long as I can remember.
      I've had one atrocious Mil-Tech M43 and another OK one, but I don't think they are in this video.
      Military Harbour generally do really good everything including M43 field caps from what I've seen; their only problems being that they don't know how to sew buttons on properly as I've had an M40 tunic and great coat that I've had to re-sew a fair few of the buttons after only using them maybe once or twice, their cost and postage times.
