So many! All the Bobby Womack material he's played on and Produced!
I.G.Y of course! Masterpiece
Too many! Recently Sturgil Simpson
I second and third Donald Fagen
Everyone is saying Donald Fagen for good reason
Legendary to say the least. Such an incredible catalog to go from, shows his versatility as a professional. Fantastic to look forward to!
Thanks ever so much for the great question!
@@Producelikeapro Cheers !
@@RC32Smiths01 thanks ever so much!
I absolutely love his stories! I'm so inspired!
Agreed! Amazing!
A Gadson track is always in my daily practice playlist.
Very well said!
Wow what a treat!
The man is 83 and still doing sessions...
What a lovable character and what a drummer ...the pocket is just incredible!
Thanks for this...and God bless Gadson
Yes, still working!
So amazing!
One of my favourite drummers of all time. Would have loved to hear if he knows anything about drum production or how they got the drum sound of the records he played on. Especially the Marvin Gaye and bill Withers stuff.
Great question! So many of those songs would have had a very limited amount of mics, so the sound is the sound of an extremely balanced drummer!
LEGEND!!! Love the Gadson groove! His work with Bill Withers changed my perspective on groove. So good, thanks Warren! Thanks James!
Very well said!
James Gadson!! One of my favourite drummers - understated, mean pocket - his playing is unmistakable. The work he did recently with Vulfpeck is sublime - but, I always go back to his work with Bill Withers for a masterclass in groove! Didn’t know until recently that he also played on IGY - another favourite track of mine………great to hear him speak about his career.
Agreed, one of the greatest drummers of all time!!
Great interview. The live at Carnegie Hall Bill Withers album is amazing and being a drummer, wonderful that you got to interview this hard working funky man! Thanks for everything and being a fellow queen fanatic! ❤️
Thanks ever so much for sharing!!
He’s certainly extremely talented and very hardworking!
Ever since I saw him drumming away before turning to the camera to give a happy stoned looking smile, whilst laying down the most understated beat for Bill Withers' "Ain't No Sunshine", on a live performance from the Old Grey Whistle Test, I've highly rated JG's funky cool groove.
Thanks ever so much for sharing!
Legend.
Absolutely
Really enjoyed this! Love hearing those stories!!
Glad you enjoyed!
This was so wonderful, thank you both!
Glad you enjoyed it!
Fantastic interview Warren. Thank you, and thanks James for all the great grooves. :)
Thanks David! Glad you enjoyed it!
Just love his playing on Ain't No Sunshine Bill Withers Live!
So amazing!
Fantastic Drummer!
We agree! Thanks ever so much!
Brilliant interview Warren of a fantastic drummer. One of my absolute favourite groovemasters who like Bernard Purdie just sat in the pocket and made any song he played on feel great. Favourite James Gadson recordings for me have to be Donald Fagen ‘I.G.Y, Doyle Bramell - Your Mama Can’t Help You & Bill Withers ‘Lonely Town Lonely Street’ amongst many others.
Thanks ever so much for sharing!
James is one of a kind, one of the greatest of all time
Agreed 100%!
I have just found this channel because I'm researching about the stone roses. I'm so happy you're still posting really great channel! Learning so much!
Awesome! Thank you!
Absolute legend! Thanks Warren! Favorites? Got To Be Real by Cheryl Lynn is one. I.G.Y. by Donald Fagen is another.
Both amazing!
70's Tavares Miracles Cheryl Lynn. Freddie Perren stuff was my thing and James Gadson grooves. Class act !
Thanks ever so much
James Gadson is the master of the groove!
THE Master!
a pocket so deep it leads to another whole universe...
Agreed 100%!
Class act is Mr. Gadson!
I feel fortunate to have seen him play around town here in LA over the last 15yrs or so. Years ago there was a neighborhood restaurant/bar on melrose called the Foundry. I would go in there and see him and some other old school funk/motown guys laying down nasty bizness !!. All these years and I NEVER knew he came from the jazz world????. A couple years ago I picked up an original copy of the Watts 103rd Street Band (Together), damn good!! 😎
That's wonderful! I'm sure it was an incredible show! Thanks ever so much!
Smashing interview. James is a cool dude, what a great history. Thanks very much for the video
Glad you enjoyed it!
Thanks ever so much Joey!
I recommend watching Doyle Bramhall II - Mama Can't Help You (Music Video) on YT- with James Gadson in it released a few years ago. ..That si something else. . I'm fascinated how the camera panned to his face - what a character! Als I am realizing how many hits James was on - it explains why I always liked that type of groove...many of it came from him.
Thanks ever so much for sharing that!
Learned of this guy through Vulfpeck
That's marvellous!
What most touched my heart was hearing Mr. Gadson talk about the way Mr. Paul Humphrey helped him out and showed him what was up regarding styles with which he wasn’t as familiar. Everyone can use an Onesiphorus in their life (2 Timothy 1:16-18). I certainly hope to have already been/be/become that in others’ lives.
Wonderful interview!
Thanks ever so much!
❤ heartwarming for sure
Thanks ever so much
Amazing interview
Thanks ever so much!
❤❤❤LOVE Mister Gadson
Marvellous! Me too
❤FUNKY WALK❤

I have the singles he released under James Gadson. And they are also wonderful.👍
Marvellous!

Such an incredible thing to be able to talk to this absolutely legend
Agreed! Thanks ever so much!
Do your thing is a jam...we use to rock that at the rec center friday night party
Amazing
The greatest hi hat that ever hi hatted!
Haha indeed!
The best of the best!
@@Producelikeapro I mean it. Kissin My Love is so funky that one cant barely handle.
@@drebatista very well said!
Bill Withers - Live at Carnegie Hall. A masterclass in understatement. Whole band is pure fire. Gospel chops can get tae feck!
It’s a truly brilliant album! One of my favourites!
Only just had time to watch now and see this gets talked about. Great to see how much he loves it too. Great chat, Warren!
@@simonhodgetts6530same here. Talk about they don't make em like that anymore!
Very well said Tom!

😃💕
Thanks ever so much Audrey!
Legend
Agreed! Thanks ever so much!
cool
Thanks ever so much Dan!
Mr Gadson had named several drummers that he listened to way back and couldnt think of the main drummer for soul singer Wicked Pickett. That drummer was Roger Hawkins. There is another bad drummer whose name is Freeman Brown of muscle shoals who backed clarence carters funky stuff.so many bad back in the day ie Kenny Buttress who backed Joe Simon on moonwalk and Farther on down the road, chokin kind
FAQ friday question: Is it important to have more then 1 set of monitors while mixing?
Not important but certainly gives you more perspective. You're making music to be heard on a wide range of speakers and headphones, so it's good to check out your mix on multiple speakers, including really cheap ones/bluetooth/airpods/in the car as well as your studio speakers.
@@rarianfields thank you sir. I always test on iPhone pods and the car but I was thinking of incorporating a second pair of studio monitors. Was thinking about the kali lp6s
HUGE Question!
@@rarianfieldsdefinitely good to have multiple ways to check your mixes, especially as you’re learning your room.
@@andrewarbogast1we are big fans of the Kali’s! I use them myself in one of our rooms! They are great!
Let a man be a man, let a woman be a woman..More Soul...Do your thing.
Til you get enough..many funky songs before Still Bill you dig
You know James Gadson drummed on Beck's Sea Change?!
Yes, indeed
Yay! Yet another icon I've never heard of.
You've got to get researching! James has played on so many amazing songs!
Smh he said because the jazz guys didn't know him they wouldn't let him play after he had walked 75 blocks to get with them...smh to think after all of the discrimination blacks had gone through up to that point..sorry sucka's...its their loss..proof is in the pudding..dude is a great great great drummer
GO!
.
poor man ... believes in a mask ... maybe a supercool drummer, but ....
Poor guy thinking it was worth posting that comment.
