My titmice love, and I mean LOVE shelled peanuts. They take one from the feeder, fly to a nearby branch, then hammer away until they're done and ready for the next! And the name is perfect, just a "small bird". Yeah, the word "titmouse" might get a few giggles from a few people, but I love that you broke the word titmouse into its Old English roots. Nomenclature is a fascinating study in itself! Thanks for the video Leslie!
Tufties are such adorable birds indeed full of personality too having been regular feeder visiters for years particularly in the context of mixed winter flocks. One of the most magical things I have ever seen was watching a nest of tuffty fledgelings fledge thanks to serendipitous timing some years ago.
These sweet little guys are what I have the most of at my house next to the woods in WV . They are also the most brave lol they love coming up on my porch stealing the cat food (I put out for the strays). These guys are hardy and loud little birds lol they almost scream at you 💛💙I love these birds thank you so much for sharing
I’m blessed to have the Tufted Titmouse year round in my area. My husband 3D printed me a window bird feeder and a pair visits it daily. Makes me (and our cats) very happy.
This is my number one favorite backyard friend. We have one of our bird boxes that is home now for the last 3 years by Titmouse, we love listening to them and watching them day after day
I have these beauties at my feeder almost daily. They do have a "call or sound" that is a lot like the Chickadees who are at my feeders every day, usually twice a day. Beautiful little birds. I'm in Texas and I am very thankful we have such a variety of birds. I also have a pair of red bellied woodpeckers, and two pair of blue jays, a pair of white brested nuthatch, many Cardinals along with many Chickadees! Loved the video! Thanks Lesley! 🐦
We have daily visitors of Tufted Titmice to our feeding deck here in southwest Ohio. They're one of our favorite birds to watch! They never stay at eat but will grab a morcel of food and take it to a nearby tree to eat. Then it'll come back for more. I guess they're shy eaters!
Here all year round mid-Michigan. Cute as can be. They love the nuts & sunflower seeds. I actually have a rose gold cardinal hanging around, with PLENTY of other birds
Lesley, thank you for your footage & information on these sweet, perky little guys! They are part of the feathered crowd at our Maryland backyard feeders. We love them all! To all you commentators & watchers: Don’t forget to hit the Like button - we want Lesley to keep making these wonderful videos!
Love Tufted Titmice!! I watch them everyday, and love seeing them grab peanuts in the shell that look as big as they are! Thanks for sharing this sweet video!😊❤️😬
These little birds are one of the cutest around our feeder and the ones around our house will respond to whistle calls similar to theirs and come in to check it out, then will often hang around for a while after. They’re a real treat to have around.
What a coincidence that you would release this video today! I saw one of these for the first time this afternoon! I just put some seed out on my porch for the juncos and within a few minutes one showed up. I couldn't believe it! Happy birding from central Wisconsin!
Thank you as always - it's an attractive little bird. The European crested tit is of a similar appearance but with darker and sharper coloration. In the UK it's mostly restricted to some of the remaining old pine forests in the Scottish Highlands. Therefore not at all common.
@@LesleytheBirdNerd That would be a great idea. There are many bird lovers here and feeding garden birds is really popular. There is a national garden birdwatch at the end of January and we have some great bird organisations including Royal Society for Protection of Birds, a charity with millions of members and British Trust for Ornithology who are professionals. There seem to be some good British birding channels on You Tube. I'm sure it would be interesting for your Canadian and US audience to learn about some of our distinctive birds, perhaps the "cousins" of your favourites - sadly we have no cardinals or bluebirds but we do have nuthatches, several familiar titmice, gold- and firecrests, wrens, robins and European jays among others, however. If I could help at all I'd be delighted but I'm afraid I'm not a photographer. Good luck if you do go ahead.
Thank you again Lesley. With my low vision, I can't follow these small birds outside, but with your great camera work, I get to see them much better, on my smartphone.
I'm blessed to have many here in my yard. They are absolutely adorable to watch and so funny! This past winter I had a few to stick around but I didn't see them daily.
I learned a lot more about a bird that's a regular visitor in all four seasons to my region, New England. I always hear them before I see them, titmice have a very distinctive call. With their crests, they look like miniature versions of the bluejay and cardinal, but of course have their own coloring and behavior. Titmice are so fun to watch! Thanks for another great video Lesley ✌️💙🐦
This was a very fascinating video, especially since I never had the pleasure of seeing a Tufted Titmouse. I always hear their "peter peter" song, and I was under the impression that these birds were very elusive. I will definitely try to look for them perched in high tree branches, as you suggested in the video. They've always looked like little gray cardinals to me :-) I would love to have them at my feeder and have not given up hope; it took the White-breasted Nuthatches two years before they showed their sweet faces at my bird feeder. Also, the derivation of the word "titmouse" from "mace" was very interesting! I've always wondered about the name "titmouse". Thank you for another great video, Lesley!
I love the Tufted Titmouse! They are so adorable! I see some footage in there from @Luna's Window! So great to see two channels I watch working together.
Cool birds- I don't recall seeing any in this area, but knowing what they sound like will be helpful- keeping my ears peeled. Their alarm call is like a cross between a chickadee and nuthatch. :^) Also, could Feisty Jay be considered a Tufted Blue Jay? Seeing some similarities there... ;^)
Thank you everyone for these lovely videos and photos, incredible to me the beautiful shots that come from this community. Such talent and just lovely to see. 💗 I always learn so much from these, thanks Leslie! 💗
I live in Virginia Beach Virginia and for years Chicadees, Cardinals and Blue Jay's have been the majority of who we see. Recently in the past two years we are seeing Juncos when the weather flips and Titmouse, Bluebirds, and Finches have been showing up. It might be development taking down more trees than I would like to see but I am glad to have these guys hanging out. The Woodpecker is occasional but because we are seeing lots of these little guys has brought Kestrals into the area. The Red Tailed Hawks, Eagles and Ospreys rarely attach these birds but the Kestrals go for them a lot. That has prompted the past 5 generations of Cardinals to nest in my overgrownrose bushes (that I won't trim if they are nesting there). Great posts Leslie. Always bring a smile when I see you post on here.
Thanks so much for the video on these adorable birds. You told me last year that a video would be coming along and you did it. I like when they chirp repeatedly. It's amusing.
These little darlings are a big presence in my N. Georgia yard. I'm so grateful for my big trees, high porch & ability to stay mostly native & chemical free. Thank you for these Lesley!
One of my favorites...they'll readily take an unsalted peanut-in-the-shell, bigger than their head, competing with the giant Blue Jay who wants those even more...
They are usually regulars at our feeders. Hopefully they, and the other regulars, will be back when these huge flocks of Goldfinches leave. Have never seen anything like it. 😳
I found that when I moved the platform and hopper feeder away from the cylinder feeder that the smaller birds came back to feed. We have had a flock of Blue Jays ever since we bought a platform feeder and began feeding a mixture that has a lot of nuts in it. The nuts were meant for the woodpeckers that also enjoy the woodpecker suet. Instead we got a huge flock of Jays. We do have woodpeckers but they will not even come near the suet while they Jays are around. Even though we have the cylinder type feeder for smaller birds they do not want to be around the Jays either. Once the smaller feeders were farther away from the platform and hopper feeders, which the Jays have taken over, some smaller birds came back. We actually got the platform feeder to attract the Cardinals that had also disappeared even though they used to dominate the area. It seems that they do not like the Jays and Grackles either. Having such a dry summer has brought the black bears down the mountain earlier than usual so the heavier feeders are put away until the bears are definitely in hibernation. We leave the smaller feeders up because I can carry them in at night to help protect them from bear destruction. We are going to have to do some planning to decide how we are going to change things up long term. The Jays are really a bother. They eat all the nuts and then sit out there and scream on and on when the nuts are all gone. 🙄
I have them here. I'll never forget one that came up when I was whistling his song back to him. He didn't get close enough for me to hold him, but he was determined to find the "other bird" in his territory.
Treasure of treasures Leslie!!! I think my resident titmice love to play a game of seeing HOW FAST they can swoop in and grab a sunflower kernel from my feeder. They are ALWAYS hanging out with chickadees and my canary goes absolutely APESHIT when he hears the peep peep call of the males it’s like they’re taunting him 😂🌎
I gave a Like, but want to give a Love! I've watched your videos for quite a while, and you have given me the confidence to become friends with all my backyard birds who I believed were all unapproachable. Now, I can whistle a specific whistle, and sometimes I get lucky enough to hear a return call - and eventually a visit from a pair of Tufted Titmice. They visit my feeders regularly, and I love it when they stay at the feeder and eat while I'm standing a few feet away. The chickadees do the same, and I feel blessed. I also think of you when it happens, and wanted to say thank you.
You're most welcome, Paul. I am so happy that you get to connect with your birds like that. It really is something beautiful to know those wild birds so well, plus they are just such a joy to have around. Thank you for the kind comment and sharing your own experience. :)
You hope we got 'some enjoyment from watching this video'? 🤔! I hardly blinked through the whole thing! They are such characterful little birds and your commentaries are always so enlightening. Thankyou very much! 😊
I've been subscribed to your awesome feed practically forever but obviously haven't commented much. I think this may only be the 3rd time! LOL.. I often just enjoy knowing how much knowledge and insight you share with a captivated audience & find myself nodding in agreement with you. Today I have to come out of viewer mode to commend you for doing something I was *so* hoping you would! You immediately followed up your comment regarding the Titmouse being of stable numbers with how important it is to not take it for granted, and I can not thank you enough! I've found myself, especially the last 10 years, literally leary of sharing the 'positives' of some non-human animals simply out of fear of people thinking they no longer need us to try to keep them at safe numbers. I often use the idea of us having to hang nest boxes as a Segway for looking at how much of their natural environment we've abused and stolen.. I'm truly sorry for this novel but so grateful for you, your vids, and this chance to share my thoughts too. Thank you so much! 🕊 🤍 🕊
Hey! Thanks for taking the time to leave a comment and sharing your thoughts. I agree wholeheartedly with what you said. It is our duty to ensure that animals on this planet continue to be cared for by protecting their habitat and things like that. Just because a species is doing well doesn't mean that we take our focus off of them. Its important to understand why they are doing well and keep that intact for them. So glad you commented. Have a great week ahead 🐦🥰
The first bird that came to our new house's feeder was a titmous and I was enchanted. Although that was over 24 years ago, we've always had at least one pair here on our 17+ acre property. I love that they are so bold, coming to the feeders even when I standing at the window watching. I love your informative videos! I've learned a lot and will improve my feeding habits thanks to you.
I love my tufted titmice. I have them year round. I feed them suet, mealworms (fresh that I cultivate) and black oil. They are non confrontational at feeders. They crack their seeds on tree limbs and the gutter. I enjoy hearing their rhythmic banging on the gutter near by my office. One year one would fly up when I put mealworms out. The closest any bird has any come to me. But it was not repeated. We love our bird friends and creating a safe food secure environment. My Bluebirds are bullies and attack any who try to investigate nest boxes even if they choose another. Same for suet and mealworms. Though woodpeckers will cause Bluebirds to back down. Thank you for this video on this sweet and cheery bird.
This little bird is my primary visitor to my feeders..they are always the first in the winter. They help give the other courage to check out the feeders. From chickadees..Cardinals. wrens primarily. Good video
Thanks Leslie! I see a Titmouse pair every day and I have been giving them seeds and almonds- which they love, for a few years now. However, I can't seem to gain their confidence. I often wonder how much friendlier they would be for you. Take care.
Aww too bad about not being able to gain their confidence. Whenever a bird is stand offish to me I let it be and often think to myself, that it's a good thing it is cautious. Not too sure if I'd gain the trust of the titmouse or not, it would be so fun to see and get to know them though. You take care too :)

Tufties are such adorable birds indeed full of personality too having been regular feeder visiters for years particularly in the context of mixed winter flocks. One of the most magical things I have ever seen was watching a nest of tuffty fledgelings fledge thanks to serendipitous timing some years ago.
Its my favorite little bird! It is so nostalgic for me to hear it since it reminds me of my time as a child at my grandmothers house in Carolina
This is my one of my favorite birds you would love them! super cute with lots of personality!
I can see their personality so clearly in videos, I would be fully into getting to know those birds. Awesome, and you are so lucky to have them
Wonderful video on the tufted titmouse Lesley! Thanks for sharing with us!💖👍😎JP
These little guys have been here year round, their chirps wake me up every morning. Great video, thank you.
Aww how sweet hearing them in the morning. :)
Hahaha what a character, sounds like what Blue Jays often do. Too cute. I'm glad that you enjoyed the video, thank you for watching. :)
They do the same on my porch in N. Georgia! When I brush my cats, I send it to the bushes for the birds.
I wish so much I had little tufted titmice, they are the cutest birds ever! Great Video Lesley!
I’m blessed to have the Tufted Titmouse year round in my area. My husband 3D printed me a window bird feeder and a pair visits it daily. Makes me (and our cats) very happy.
Great video Lesley! These are one of my favorite birds, I am fortunate enough to see them at my feeders all the time 😀
My favorite bird!!! I’ve moved out of those range, but I grew up with them all around me… I miss my birds. 🥺🥺
:( Aww, that's too bad. I bet seeing them in this video was nice :)
@@LesleytheBirdNerd yup, im glad you cover all sorts of birds on your channel. :D
@@LesleytheBirdNerd my favorite bird
One of my favorite visitors.
We have daily visitors of Tufted Titmice to our feeding deck here in southwest Ohio. They're one of our favorite birds to watch! They never stay at eat but will grab a morcel of food and take it to a nearby tree to eat. Then it'll come back for more. I guess they're shy eaters!
They are so sweet. You're lucky ri have those little rascals 🐦🥰
Never see em in my backyard in Houston, but drive an hour to the sides of the city and you'll find em. Fun to watch!
I love their nasal call. One of my favorite back yard birds.
You're so kind, Dan. Thank you. I love making these videos and I love reading the comments from other people sharing their own bird experiences.
I have these beautiful fun birds in my area. They are a friendly bird and fun to watch. And they are pretty. I love them like I love the chickadees.
Oh wow that is awesome. I'd be so thrilled if I saw a Tufted Titmouse show up at my feeders :) Happy Birding to you too!
@@LesleytheBirdNerd cute little gray bird🥰
Endearing is the perfect word to describe this wonderful, cheeky species. I love seeing them at my feeder!
I love those little birds and they are quite vocal. ❤❤
I hear this bird a lot in my neighborhood, they have that sweet song they sing.
It really is a sweet song 🐦🥰
Thank you as always - it's an attractive little bird. The European crested tit is of a similar appearance but with darker and sharper coloration. In the UK it's mostly restricted to some of the remaining old pine forests in the Scottish Highlands. Therefore not at all common.
I really want to do a video on the birds in the UK.
Wonderful. So glad these videos help you see the birds that you enjoy better :)
I'm blessed to have many here in my yard. They are absolutely adorable to watch and so funny! This past winter I had a few to stick around but I didn't see them daily.
That is awesome!
They sure seem like wonderful birds. I have to see one someday. Glad you enjoyed the video. :)
I've never seen these birds, they are absolutely beautiful and I love your voice. Thanks.
🙂🐦 thank you
I love the Tufted Titmouse! They are so adorable! I see some footage in there from @Luna's Window! So great to see two channels I watch working together.
Ty for another great, fun, delightful video! I have titmice at the peanut feeders in the winter here in Wisconsin. Always great to see them!
They are so cute and fun to watch. We are fortunate to have many visiting our feeders. Thank you for creating this video.
Darling little birds!
Cool birds- I don't recall seeing any in this area, but knowing what they sound like will be helpful- keeping my ears peeled. Their alarm call is like a cross between a chickadee and nuthatch. :^) Also, could Feisty Jay be considered a Tufted Blue Jay? Seeing some similarities there... ;^)
You'll definitely have to keep your ears peeled :) YES! Feisty Jay the Tufted Blue Jay. Love it. :D
@@LesleytheBirdNerd these are cute birds I see these in spring 😀 now🥰
@@LesleytheBirdNerd I never see tuffed titmouse eggs 😔

What a cute little bird! We don't have them here in SW Wa. But if they came, we sure wouldn't turn them away! Thanks for sharing Leslie!
I have always loved these little sweeties. Thank you for the great information!
You are so welcome!
Thank you everyone for these lovely videos and photos, incredible to me the beautiful shots that come from this community. Such talent and just lovely to see. 💗 I always learn so much from these, thanks Leslie! 💗
So adorable. I hear them where I live.❤
I love the tufted titmouse! I call them the “eba eba” bird.
Great work as always Lesley!
I've seen countless bird behavior, feeding and watching videos and yours are, by FAR, the best! Thanks!
Have lots of these in my garden. They are very smart and always the first to find new food drops. They LOVE peanuts.
One of my favorites...they'll readily take an unsalted peanut-in-the-shell, bigger than their head, competing with the giant Blue Jay who wants those even more...
yes I'm amazed how their tiny beaks can pick up a big peanut.
They are usually regulars at our feeders. Hopefully they, and the other regulars, will be back when these huge flocks of Goldfinches leave. Have never seen anything like it. 😳
Omgosh, us too! We have a huge flock of gold finches this year!
These guys always know the second I put down peanuts at the feeders. I dont even have time to walk back inside before they swoop down for em
Too adorable. I love it when birds come to investigate. 😄🐦
Treasure of treasures Leslie!!! I think my resident titmice love to play a game of seeing HOW FAST they can swoop in and grab a sunflower kernel from my feeder. They are ALWAYS hanging out with chickadees and my canary goes absolutely APESHIT when he hears the peep peep call of the males it’s like they’re taunting him 😂🌎
Hahaha too cute about your Canary going silly when hearing the tufted titmouse 😄🐦 thanks for the nice comment 🥰
These little cuties are my favorite backyard birds. I love their calls and their mannerisms!
The tufted titmouse is among my favorite birds. I never saw one until I moved into a woodland area in my 30s. It was love at first sight!
I can definitley see why you liked them instantly. Such adorable birds 🥰🐦
@LesleytheBirdNerd ..
Thank YOU as well!
May you and yours have an amazing week! 🤍 🕊
Yes!!! I love this bird. Can’t wait to watch this!
So glad I could help, and be a part of this video! Thanks Lesley!
I just love this bird! They are so friendly and cute. I hope one year they will make a nest near my house! Thanks for sharing 💕
With a cute bird like this, no wonder Homer Simpson can't say it's name without giggling like a schoolgirl
Adorable! Thank you for sharing, as usual!
Thank you! Cheers!
Your commentary is always so informative. It was fun to watch.
Thank you so much 🙂🐦
Thank you for sharing!!! I enjoyed very much. I. have a bird that looks like that. He is energetic movement. Fun to watch !
My favorite bird!
I can totally see how wonderful it must be to see those little cuties. I'd be so enamoured by them if they were here. 🥰🐦
This little bird is my primary visitor to my feeders..they are always the first in the winter. They help give the other courage to check out the feeders. From chickadees..Cardinals. wrens primarily. Good video
We are lucky enough to have these beautiful little ones in our garden! They are my favorite and so beautiful! ❤️
Loved your video. My wife and I look forward to your posts. We always find your information helpful and enjoyable.
Hey thank you both so much for watching the videos. I'm really happy to read that you enjoy them and find them helpful. Happy birding 🐦🙂
