hi i am in ontario canada i use to have lots of bird at my bird feeder but few weeks have past i dont see no bird is it cuase they all moved to usa?
@@yaad2226 It's so hard to say for sure what could be at play but I don't think they should have left for the US, not yet anyway. It could be that they found another good food source. If there has been a storm it could be that too, I find that my birds disappear when bad weather hits. I bet your birds will be back again soon.
@@LesleytheBirdNerd i dont get any bird at my bird feeder no more i use to have so many. few weeks after snow started they got fewer and fewer and now none there
Lesley the Bird Nerd, you’ve created another remarkable film about a lovely breed - nuthatches 🤗 I appreciate your detailed explanation of Lentils identifying behaviors and her series of mates. You are a talented film maker and your photography is stellar ✨ Thank You Thank You Thank You
@@LesleytheBirdNerd I’m in north Texas and idk exactly when but around 5-7 years ago my feeders quit having hardly any birds compared to previous 5-6 years. The sky in my whole neighborhood really emptied of birds. I get some doves a few sparrows and finches at feeders and some woodpeckers at their suet. Occasionally a couple of cardinals or the odd species here and there. It’s just heartbreaking 💔. Sky seems so sad without all the birds.
So beautiful! The only wildbird that ever landed and ate sunflower seeds out of my hand was a Red Breasted Nuthatch. I hadn't planned it. While refilling my bird feeders I felt something looking at me. I looked up and on the bird feeding station was a Nuthatch waiting for those seeds I slowly put my open hand out with sunflower seeds and that's all it took to land on my little finger and grab a seed or two.
Awww that is so sweet, what a nice encounter you had.
Yes, nuthatches do have bravery
@@LesleytheBirdNerd it really filled my heart. That bird came back on two more occasions in different days and again landed on my pinkie finger to help himself to more sunflower seeds.
Now, this was Winter time so he was probably hungry. But the bravest little bird I've seen. I still stop and listen for their little "honk! honk!"❤️
That is so awesome!
🐦🐦🐦🐦🐦🐦🐦🐦
I’m going to have to try that. I’d probably get so excited I’d scare him away.
She's quite a bird. I especially like the fact that she hides the seeds on you
😆
It's astonishing to me that you could differentiate between all of Lentil's partners over the years. Another great video!
Red-breasted nuthatches are so distinct, much like Blue Jays. They make it really easy for me to tell them apart from one another :) Thanks for the pleasant comment.
@@LesleytheBirdNerd Ha, I love the way you say "much like Blue Jays". I can't tell them apart either : ) I think you have a special talent.
@@LesleytheBirdNerd your penchant for the naming schemes is just as impressive as your knowledge on these little sweeties.
I've wondered how to tell the birds apart and how people do it, I've even always wondered how they know their mates from other birds in the area because to us from a distance they all look the same. I've noticed that they all have different personalities however and I'm sure up close they've got some little different markings or a coloring shade that's different and that's the way to keep up. I just wish I had a good camera for bird watching as many are getting so tame I could get beautiful photos. I've got a white breasted nuthatch that acts like he wants to land on me, and I do have a few little hummingbird friends that will actually land on my forearm while I'm hanging their feeders after refilling them.
I am so glad I found your channel. You have no idea how beautiful this looks to someone stuck in a city in the middle of a grey winter, with nature only in the memory and thoughts. Thank you.
How I love the sounds that nuthatches and chickadees make!
My favorite thing about nuthatches is their backwards zigzag hop up tree trunks.
They are awesome to watching walking around on trees for sure :)
If there ever truly was a Mother Nature, it would be you, Lesley!
Haha, she sure is a talkative bird, I think she is saying "Howdy" to her favorite person. Great story on Lentil she is a great little bird.
Hahaha I know hey. Her chattiness that day was off the charts, so cute. Thanks for coming by. Hope you have a very nice weekend 🥰
@@LesleytheBirdNerd sounded like lady gossip & commiseration 😉
@@LesleytheBirdNerd the brown headed nuthatch is the same size as red breasted nuthatch ☝️
@@LesleytheBirdNerd lentil is so cute 🥰
I think she was telling Lesley about her day.
Dear little bird 💖🐤💖
OMG that is so cute her hiding the seeds on you! Cracked me up!
Hahahah too cute hey!
I love my little red-breasted nuthatch. For such a small bird they're full of brass, chasing off birds larger than themselves. How they get so much energy is a mystery to me when the take an individual seed, fly off some distance to eat it. It seems that they use more energy flying off to whereever than they gain from the seeds they eat.
They are definitely bursting with energy, hahaha
Always, always bogles the mind you can tell them all apart. I would have thought she had the same mate the whole time🤣 . Also, ty for the cute alert! Lentil is quite something
Hahhhaha 😂 I spend so much time with these birds that I not can tell them apart both by appearance and personality. They all have their own little distinctions. I'm so glad you enjoyed the part about her hiding seeds on me, what a darling she is 🥰
So precious.
Thank you for your beautiful videos! Two winters ago we had a eurasian jay feeding on unshelled peanuts in our garden. Coming spring I wanted top ut on rubber boots that stood outside at the house wall. To my surprise they were filled with the peanuts that the jay must have hidden there! 😂
Oh my gosh that is so funny and cute too. Thanks for sharing
@@LesleytheBirdNerd their so cute and curious and chatted 🥰
"Nuthatch" sounds like a place I'd be admitted to without my birds.
😂 you and me both
I have a great number of nuthatches on my feeders right now, they are comical !
Too awesome! They are definitely a riot to watch :)
I never saw before the bird hiding the seeds on human! 😅Omg, you're privileged Lesley. What a cute little bird. Thanks for the lovely vid
Lentil sounds so adorable 💞 Her trying to hide seeds on you is too much!
I love all nuthatches 😍 They have those special feet (halux/rear toe) that let them run up and down the trees, and I never get enough of watching them do this. Plus, nuthatches also have some of the most adorable pipipipipi sounds! I think the only thing that could possibly contend with the cute sounds of the red-breasted nuthatch is MAYBE the pygmy nuthatch--they are pretty high on the cute sound list for me. The pygmies sound like they are saying, "pewpew!" 🎶 Cuteness laserbeams!
"pewpew" Sounds almost the way Juncos do, too darn cute. Thanks for the pleasant comment and for the kind donation. Appreciate it :)
Lentil is a sweetheart and I love her chatter, so cute. ❤️
Her chatter is the best :)
Assup they are called locally. If you watch them you'll know why.
Lentil is a strong, independent woman with personality for days! Thanks so much for introducing us to her. 🥰
You are so welcome!
In animal kingdom, every species, male is always the prettier one, except for human. The creator really has no logic.
@@seanleith5312 That’s not universally true, and when it is it’s because men like to show off and try to impress the ladies with their plumages and dances. God knows women are smart enough to see past that and use their brains. ;)
@@LesleytheBirdNerd Their so full of energy ⚡
She might have lost her mates, but she will never lose her best human friend. I love that she sings to you. I don't care what anyone says, she loves you for sure. It's so heartwarming.
I’m envious of your birding knowledge, kinship and filming skills! I’m usually surrounded by cats, dogs and barn animals. I feed the birds well, but I will never get to be best friends. I love Mother Nature and all animals. Please keep sharing!!! 💜🕊️
My mother in law used to love watching her little "upside down birds".
The looking around, observing and assessing the environment ❤
Love that chatty conversation. Cute how she pecks at the tree when you take too long with snacks, haha. Thanks for sharing and happy birding!
Thanks again Lesley. Enjoy all your videos ! The Nuthatch seems fearless and determined !
Nuthatches are perhaps the best to watch for their silly acrobatics and sounds. I remember back in NY I would notice that not only can they climb upsidedown on a wire, they can actually land on the top then swing below the wire while loosely holding like a trapeze artist! Still haven't seen a red one, but I live in northern NV now so I'll be more likely to see one eventually.
And that wing dance! I know they're trying to be scary, but it's simply hilarious and adorable to me
Had my first two red breasted nuthatch at the feeders this year. Only saw them one or two days. Haven't returned, but I see my white breasted crew daily
White-breasted nuthatches are so pretty
Such a sweet little bird. How adorable is it that she hides her seeds on you! Thanks for another lovely video!
Sweet, beautiful little Lentil. A tiny bird with a big heart ❤️😍
Thank you for another smile on my face from your videos. My favorite feathered friend is the Carolina Wren. Adorable overload!
You are very welcome, I'm glad that you enjoyed it. By the way, super jealous that you have Carolina Wrens, they are so stinking adorable. I'd love to see one some day.
Wrens are absolutely hilarious, they yell at each other in the morning, then spend the rest of the day yelling at us mere humans who put out the birdhouses and feed they like 😂😂
I adore these mini bosses. ❤
Thank you, Leslie, for this darling little story! Precious!🕊️🍂🍃
Your ability to individually identify and catalog the lives of these birds is impressive 😁
She so adorable!! ❤️😍
So cute! Lots of personality and charm!
So true, they are full of charm and have fun personalities :) Thanks for watching
Love Lentils antics! She is so sweet. ❤
I have never seen anything as cute as Lentil hiding seeds on you Lesley! My daughters & I were cracking up watching that part. A little for later -very wise. Thank you & happy birding!
That mee-dee-deet takes me back to my youth when Nuthatches would take advantage of my father's feeder in Maryland. I recently learned (read) that we have a Nuthatch here in Florida, the Brown Headed, which doesn't mee-dee-deet but I will endeavor to spot one next time I'm out walking about the pine forests here in South Florida. Thanks as always for your amazing content!
Amazing, Lesley. Thank you for sharing Lentil with us.
Thank you for checking out the video :)
One of my favorite birds, next to Chickadees. We get them on our feeders, usually in the Spring and Fall (in Wisconsin) but sadly they only stay maybe a week. Certainly not long enough to get to know or name.
It's funny how fearless they are. I've had them land on my while I was filling the feeders, as if to say Hurry up! :)
Thanks Lesley, this was a fantastic video of little Lentil. your video skills are really top notch. You're the best !!!
Aww thanks so much 🥰
Thank you so much for sharing this incredible relationship. Nuthatches are just too darned adorable
That little bird is quite the character. It’s no wonder you love her so. Thank you so much for teaching me more about Nuthatches and sharing how special little Lentil is❣️😊
Crazy nuthatches. I love watching them hop on trees.
Hi Lesley. 🌞 I Loved watching this video. Sharing those precious moments with us, I thank you so much. I laughed out loud when the red breasted nuthatch were doing their mating dance. We have white breasted nuthatches here mostly. Slightly different behaviours than the red. Great hearing your stories about the journey and observations over the years. A lot I did not know. Excellent editing and photography not to mention story teller.
All the best of Wellness sent your way sunshine. 🥰🐦🌲
Nice meeting you Lentil. 💚
Aww thank you so much for the pleasant comment. I'm glad you enjoyed learning about these precious nuthatches and especially of Lentil :) All the best wishes to you as well 🥰
Such enjoyable videos. And one of the most attractive voices I've had the pleasure to experience.
Thanks a bunch for the kind compliment. I'm glad you enjoyed this video of little Lentil
I’m on the Long Island region of New York. I have plenty of white breasted nuthatches visiting us at the feeder, and I was so happy to see that among the flurry of nuthatches, a red breasted nuthatch decided to drop by. They really are expressive and sassy birds! I’m so happy you explained their behavior of them with the bark of trees, I have seen them pecking the bark in my backyard oak, and I always wondered why in the middle of winter when bugs are more scarce? That explains all of what you mentioned! We love you, Lentil!!!
Lil Lentil telling you news of her travels and appreciation of the bounty you offer, she is delightful, so happy for you and your bird companions. ❤
Those little R2 D2 noises absolutely slay me, I love my little meepers. One of them sometimes goes to the feeder ahead of me when I'm walking by. I pause and wait for her to eat before passing the feeder. Animals are the most wonderful thing in the world, I think.
Oh my god, Lesley, I LOVED this video and everything you shared about Lentil. What an amazing, adorable creature! I can't believe she hides seeds on you LOL LOL LOL Too endearing. When you said nuthatches can be chatty, I never imagined THAT chatty as when she was getting you caught up on everything that was going on that spring (at least, that's what it seemed like to me).
Also incredible that she has such a large territory, all on her own! And those mini-Lentils! Oh my gosh ADORABLE! I am in awe and so grateful you made this video. I'd love to see videos on each of the birds you've named, if you're up for it, and hear what their personality is like in more detail and their story over the years you've known them.
Thank you for lifting my spirits with this endearing video and truly the cutest nuthatch there ever was!
Hahhaa she was so chatty and it was actually like, as you described, that she was trying to catch up with me, lol. She is one awesome little nuthatch. What a life :) Thank you for pleasant comment and I'm so happy that this little video lifted your spirits. Take care
You are truly the ‘Bird Whisperer’ Lesley! Your connection with birds is amazing! And your photography is fantastic! I learn so much from watching your videos. I envy your closeness to the birds. They trust you so much! Thanks for sharing. ❤ Teresa
What a sweet little bird.
Oh my gosh...hiding the seeds on you is soooo cute!
She is a darling little creature! How lucky you are to have her trust and companionship,
Impressive little feisty bird. Love those close ups!
Awesome, glad you enjoyed it :)
Fun glimpse into your bird world, Miss Lesley
That is just magical. Lentil trusts you enough to hide food on you, trusting you enough believing you'll return. I love your videos!
Thank you so much!
This camerawork deserves an award!
I was wondering about these little guys. I've lived around the southern most edge of Great Lakes for around 30 years now and this is the first year I've seen Nuthatches here. I know they like to eat from cones and there are next to no conifers around here so I never expected to see any. I thought they were just passing through, but they've been showing up at my feeders pretty consistently this winter. Man I've been missing out! They're such cool little birds and fun to watch too. I hope they come down here every winter.
That swaying is so hilarious🤭🤭. Lentil has the perfect name. If any bird tried to bury and hide seeds on me I would turn to liquid💖
Thank you for this beautiful, educational and entertaining video❣️❤️❤️
So happy you enjoyed it :)
What a super lovely video! Lentil IS the most adorable little bird!
Thanks a bunch, Maggie. She is definitely high up there on the cuteness level
Absolute Angels!! This made my day! ❤️
Thanks for checking it out :)
That was charming, thank you Lesley 🖤
Thank you too, 🥰
I love them. There's mostly the white ones, but occasionally there's a red couple now and then. Love them hanging upside. Today, I got two treats. Some kind of warbler was in the bushes. And a big ole red-breasted woodpecker was on my deck, and exploring the big walnut trees in the back yard. I thought it was a flicker at first. But nope. I got a downy woodpeckers coming right up to me, but the nuthatches just look at me and wait for me to go back inside. I try doing their call. But no luck yet.
What a cute little character she is!! Thank you so much for sharing about Lentil! Made my day!
I loved hearing Lentil's story 🥰 And their names all seem so fitting!! Nuthatches are one of my favourites. Also seeing the nuthatch climb the tree in slow-mo cracked me up for some reason 😂 Thank you for sharing ❤
Hahaha, they are so fun to watch in slow motion. Thanks a bunch for watching and for the nice comment. 🥰
My favorite trait of all, btw, is Lentil's seed hiding on your clothing!! So Cute!!! I love that the most of all! 🎀💖🎀
It's definitely a heart melter. Such innocence. Thanks for the pleasant comment
My two favorite birds… thank you for this much appreciated infusion of cuteness!☺️
I get a big smile on my face when these little guys show up at our feeders they don't show up every year at our feeders like the white breasted do... But last fall they showed up at our feeders I seen two of them they don't stay but a few days and then their gone hopefully this year they will come back for another visit...
I also love the noisy, bossy little bully birds 🎉
They are the best🥰
@@LesleytheBirdNerd she's so cute hiding seeds🥰
What a brilliant video. Thank you so much. I have been a bird watcher in the UK for over 65 yrs!!
I remember seeing my first European Nuthatch nesting in a garden box over 40 yrs ago! They had filled the slot with mud leaving just a small hole. Thanks for posting, regards, John. UK.
I have a lot of Red-breasted Nuthatches in pine trees in NE Oklahoma! They began arriving in September. They are very vocal, incessantly so at times. One flew down so close to me I could here the wingbeats.
Ive seen both the white and the red nuthatches at my feeder at the same time this winter. I rarely see them at all even in winter in my area. They are more the welcome to hangout at my feeders.
I like how the chick-a-dees never seem to hold a grudge. They are like OK then, I'll be back in one nanosecond.
Here in Washington State, our Nuthatches live here year round. I see them every day, and love their tiny horn like voices. 💖
Awesome Lesley! Nuthatches are so cute! Thank you for mentioning my channel at the end!
Hey, thank you. And yes those nuthatches are so cute for sure. My absolute pleasure to give you a shout-out, you have so many wonderful videos and you have been so generous to us. I hope you have a great year with the nestboxes.
I love how you really get to know the birds personally. Especially noticing Lentil's various mates over the years. Incredible!! I'm in the midwest and we get these little beauties from time to time. Thanks for such delightful videos! 🙂
I was trying to take some photos of a red-breasted nuthatch in my yard today with my new zoom camera. He gave me a lot of chances going back and forth grabbing seeds than stashing them in the trees, but he just moved to much for me to get a good shot! I love these birds though, and am always surprised that they show little fear of me and will land on a feeder as I hang it back up after refilling it.
Keep at it, you will get better over time.
Love the little nuthatches, both white and red breasted. We didn't have any red breasted nuthatches in '21 and '22 and so far I haven't seen one this year. If we get a few later I'll be sure to get some pictures to post on FB. I usually post a bird picture almost every day.
She's really adorable and beautiful 😍
4:15 Listen to her! She sounds like she's chatting with an old pal 😉
Thank you for this wonderful video 🙏
Lentil really is adorable! What a sweet little bird! I wonder if she thinks that by stashing some seeds in your clothing, she’s ensuring that you’ll always have a supply of seeds for future visit :-). I’ve been enjoying having my first Red-breasted Nuthatch here in TN this winter. I see her frequently at the bird pond but haven’t noticed her yet at the feeders. She’s so tiny, I may have just missed her! I’ll be sorry to see her leave in the spring.
Thank you for sharing your bird knowledge and encounters.💕
I hear and see Red Breasted Nuthatches all year at my home, in Saskatchewan, this is the first year I've gotten one to notice my feeder. He is quite aggressive with the chickadees often driving them away to get a seed, even though he's out numbered 6-1 he is the boss. He is a bit more causious around me than the Chickadees but he still comes close and scolds me when I'm tending the feeder.
😂tooo darned cute. I can see him now, holding his own against all those pesky chickadees 😆
Oh, Lentil, you are so strong and resilient as well as cute! You have enchanted Lesley by hiding seeds on her! I haven’t seen any red-breasted nuthatches in southeast Virginia, but there are white-breasted nuthatches - and plenty of those Carolina wrens you mention! I love hearing these little wrens sing - they are pretty loud! With the unusual cold spells we are getting, I know the birds are waiting for me to refill the feeders and birdbath in my yard. Water evaporates quickly in it, so when I put out fresh water I get lots of visitors. I’m so thrilled to see my winter visitors, the yellow-rumped warblers, again! Every bird is so precious to me.
I love the Nuthatches also!
Preciousness with wings❤
Lol! That was adorable, hiding seeds on you. I love Red-breasted Nuthatches❣️ The funniest thing (and noisiest) is to hear a young one…They have such a loud, repetitive “meep, meep, meep, meep.”
This little legume brings a smile to my face. Her R2-D2 style vocalizations crack me up. I also am fascinated by the way these birds scale trees. Such deft, purposeful movement. I will keep an eye out for the red breasted nuthatch when I resume weekends at my 'up north' spot in the spring (northern Michigan, solidly in their breeding range). Another fantastic video!
Lesley, I loved the video! You're amazing with birds!
