  • Have you ever tried to work outside on your laptop? Pretty difficult in the sun, huh? You probably need a higher nit screen. Higher nit screens are easier to view in a broader range of lighting conditions. The more nits, the more luminescent the screen. So what exactly is a NIT? In this video, Bob will break it down for you.

    03:16 | Conclusion
Bob teaches us about the NIT rating on screens and how this affects daylight readability. Some examples of the questions that we get on this topic are "how bright is the screen?" or "can I read it in the daylight?" A lot of questions come in because the Panasonic Toughbooks are used in outdoor situations in most cases. So, what is a NIT and how does it relate to the brightness of the screen? A NIT is a unit of luminance that represents how bright the screen can be which is very subjective. The brightness refers to how we perceive luminance. The definition of a technical NIT is that 1 NIT is equal to one candela. This unit of measure refers back to the 19th-century whale oil candles that they used- it's just one of those. Most consumer laptops like HP, Lenovo, and Dell are going to be between 200 nits and 600 nits. The 300 to 400 range is very common. With these consumer laptops, in direct sunlight, seeing that screen will be a struggle. On the other hand, rugged laptops are meant to be outside. One good example of a good daylight readable screen is the Panasonic Toughbook CF-19 which has a nit rating of 6,000. It's based on Panasonic's technology, "Transflective Plus" which means that whenever the sunlight hits the back of that Panasonic Toughbook CF-19, it bounces back and adds more brightness to that screen allowing the user to still see the screen in bright light.
