Music video by The Who for their U.S. single "Call Me Lightning" shot c. Feb. 27, 1968 at an abandoned warehouse in Hollywood, California. Directed by Austin John Marshall.
in some ways i think this type of tunes by the who is great because they had the balls to do it and weather it tanked or was a hit it made an impression. love the humor in the video. miss keith
Five actually... Finest lead performance: Keith Moon. Finest musical arrangement: Keith Moon. Best Supporting Actor: Roger Daltrey. Best bass arrangement: John Entwistle. Best Original Songbook: Pete Townshend.
Dum dum dum today? Terrain?..dum dum dum...let's modulate ...a bit of noisy bass ...dum dum dum...I like the Bartman and Man with money better...so sad about us...dum dum dum
Like so many other people, I've known this only from TKAA. I knew it was originally the promo for Call Me Lightning, but I never saw it. This is why RUclips is so cool.
First time I heard this song it sounded to my ears like Led Zepplin ran smack into the Beach Boys! Fun little tune, which juuust cracked the American top 40 in '68.
The Who were considering doing a show like The Monkees and this was the promo. It sounds like earlier mod Who material as opposed where they were in 1968. I guess to sound more like the stuff written for The Monkees at the time by the likes of Goffin, King, and Diamond, among others.
@accadaccasuperstar Obviously its the call me lightning video seeings how "dum dum dum doo day" pops up just as it is played in the song. Not only that but a lightning bolt appears right after. :P
@LarryRickenbacker Really? I believe you , but , I've got a couple of copies with "Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde" as the flip , a much more appropriate choice. "Jekyll /Hyde " may not have been very commercial , either , but , the two WORK together....The Oldies station in Dallas used to play "Lightning" , and , occasionally , even "See Emily Play".
In '68 this song just barely cracked the American top 40. Barely. It's better than "Dogs" and Pete thought "Dogs" would be the biggest hit since "the Twist"!, LOL. When it came time to release "Dogs" in the U.S., with the B-side being "Call me Lightning" , the record company reversed it and made "Call me Lightning" the A side, since "Dogs" tanked in the U.K. as an A side. Surprised "Call me Lightning" isn't head on radio.
blahblahunicornx He probably was. John was attracted to dark kind of things like that. It's all good though as it was part of the pre/PC era when all images were up for being recast as rock n roll fashion.
This song actually cracked the top 40 in the U.S in '68. It went all the way to #40. Catchy little tune!
in some ways i think this type of tunes by the who is great because they had the balls to do it and weather it tanked or was a hit it made an impression. love the humor in the video. miss keith
"This drum machine is defective. Let's keep it."
--John Entwistle upon unboxing his new Keith Moon, 1968
This song was on the charts when I was born, April 1968. Loved the bass solo, even though John Entwistle hated it.
Haha what a great video! Keith and John at the end are very sweet too.
One of the band's most endearing tracks. Fantastic melody, and you gotta love the part where Moon just gives Daltrey a good smack on the lips. 😊
Pure rock and roll in 67 TOP!!!!!!
@@benbeusenberg3206 Indeed!
how many oscars did this win?

Best rock video EVER. I first saw this video in 1987 when I was 13 and it got my hooked on The Who!
One of the best bass solos ever! Got to meet John & his wife in Dallas. What a classy couple!
Ha ha ha ha...I love when Keith kisses Roger at the end ....too funny!!
This no budget video is better than those million dollar videos shot for MTV.
o
Amen.

"I'm gonna show you why they Call Me Lightning".
Great song by The Who!
They are always the best! Long Live The Who!
Like so many other people, I've known this only from TKAA. I knew it was originally the promo for Call Me Lightning, but I never saw it. This is why RUclips is so cool.
For some reason somebody was playing this on commericial radios YEARS ago...REALLY great hook, beat! How long HAS IT BEEN since rock 'n roll died?? : (
+John Erwin the good old days! 60's & 70's
since all the squares turned out to be "hip". those jerks with their computers ruined everything...
I once heard Heinz Baked Beans on the radio
Both winging and rocking.Another great Who song.
Never seen this before, THANK YOU SO MUCH to the genius who uploaded it! My favourite era of The Who, too!
THAT FUCKING BASS BREAK JEEZ
Fantastic video. Wonderful tune. One of The Who hidden gems. Entwistle is using a wah-wah pedal for bass, I guess.
When I went looking for this 45 when it first came out I was looking for the tune dumb dumb dumb do day.😂
First time I heard this song it sounded to my ears like Led Zepplin ran smack into the Beach Boys! Fun little tune, which juuust cracked the American top 40 in '68.
A Closet Classic!
All these years of being a fanb, I had always thought this "promotional video" had been filmed in '67.
That is hilarious! I love The Who.
I was always more of a Who fan than a Zeppelin fan!
The riffs are simple enough but rock like hell. Especially from 1:27 to 1:34.
Then everybody figgered they had to play about a hundred notes a second.
awesome video.classic THE WHO.
Yeah baby!!
The Who were considering doing a show like The Monkees and this was the promo. It sounds like earlier mod Who material as opposed where they were in 1968. I guess to sound more like the stuff written for The Monkees at the time by the likes of Goffin, King, and Diamond, among others.
Great song, loveable video and Keith Moon is cute!
Oh Keith, why did you have to go? :.(
"Hey look! It's a Keith-In-A-Box! Let's beat it with sticks and run it over in a car! Jolly good!"
I agree. This is the first time I have seen it in full.
okay coolest thing I have seen in a while lol - man beam me back to the 60's!
BUT It matches Cobwebs and Strange perfectly. It's been a while since watching "the kids are alright", but I'll take your word on it.
This is the cursed content I signed up for.
I never saw this video!
Wooooooooow ... is ... amazing!
EXACTLY. That's why it's awesome.
HOW I EVEN WAS LIVING WITHOUT KNOWING IT???? *
To think that lots of actual "musicians" have a bunch of money and not even a few of this creativity!
No one else is worthy of the title of the best band ever. No one.
rare. thanks for uploading.
I have it on wery strange winyl compilation.
I don't get why this isn't more popular
@accadaccasuperstar
Obviously its the call me lightning video seeings how "dum dum dum doo day" pops up just as it is played in the song. Not only that but a lightning bolt appears right after. :P
i didnt think this was an indie band when i first listened to this you did >:0
I thought this video was for Cobwebs and Strange. I really like this song too.
They look so innocent, young and funny. Good old sixties!
@accadaccasuperstar ViceVersa actually. It was changed to Cobwebs & Strange for The Kids Are Alright movie.
Awesome, Can someone please post just the music to Run run run. Thanx!
john too he was awesome
Cool! Way to make a good video. :)
The video (NOT the song) has a bit of the Beatles' "Can't Buy Me Love" feel from the film "A Hard Day's Night." One of my fave Who sides.
incredible Entwistle bass solo at 1:15.
Proof once again that Keith was the Who.
yes you are right it is the video for cobwebs and strange. its in the film the kids are alright
I really miss bands that would just have fun and rock out, I really hate some of the talentless music we have nowadays.
OK, Boomer
in his defense that part was edited out of the Cobwebs and Strange part of the film.
roger didnt expect that.
I've heard that John really didn't like his bass solo on this song. I think it's awesome, but he was just dissappointed about it. Crazy, John, crazy.
Ahahahahah!!! Love it so much!!!! :D xD
See Emily play was pink floyd
This is the "original" music but for "The Kids Are Alright" this was redubbed with "cobwebs & strange"...
So the robot's name is Lightning
cobwebs & strange vid?
Don't you dare mention the bass solo in front of John "The Ox" Entwistle. He may punch you in the eye.
Keith is so cute and now pete is the robot
This song sounds better slowed down. They speeded up the recording .probably because kit lambert felt the song was to slow?
This nickname Roger had was because he went through the groupies very quickly!
I thought this was the video for cobwebs and strange?
Why does entwistle have an SS patch on his jacket in this video
Shock rock
Hahahahahahaha classic!!
Cobweb and Strange suits it better
ClassicTVMan1981X 1:50
Cobwebs and Strange brought me here
I still swear John is wearing an SS jacket in this video.
blahblahunicornx He probably was. John was attracted to dark kind of things like that. It's all good though as it was part of the pre/PC era when all images were up for being recast as rock n roll fashion.
The video does nothing for the song
That's cuz that video goes with cobwebs and strange (I think)
hyptertextwho.html
works better as cobwebs and strange !!!!!
WHAT THE HECK?!?!?!?!
Gah, this is compressed way past 0dBFS. Ow
@warmadscot I don't know, Pete in a box might be better...
Dam dam dam du lait
Dum dum dum doo-rang (sp?) ... looks like they were trying to copy the "girl group" sound of The Chiffons and others.
ClassicTVMan1981X Dum Dum Dum Do Day. It appears on the video.
lol silly
