Fun fact. I had been sitting on my Ryzen 3600 waiting for used 5800x3d prices to come down until I ran across a 5800x for $120 early last year. Thought that was my final form AM4 rig. Then last weekend I picked up a 5800x3d and Radeon 6700xt combo used for $350 and promptly chucked that bitch in my rig. GPU to be flipped with the old cpu. Good times.

Biggest issue with 5800x3d has actually become its popularity. Its motherboards are a scam. DDR4 motherboards should ALL run 3200 stock now, but now you are forking over more than the CPU's price to get native 3200. Motherboard makers are actively fking consumers over with AM4

Even a $370 5950X is great MT productivity performance for the money. The only real negative to having an early AM4 board is being limited to PCIe3.0, where as AM5 gives you fresh standards to grow into. You can have PCIe5.0 and USB4, and nothing else on the horizon is going to be real a factor in the consumer space for at least 8 years. There is a future where the EOL products for the socket are going to be equally as cheap as the AM4 options are now, for a massive relative perf bump from where the platform began.

I disagree. Recommending upgrade path isn't bait because it is the cheaper option long term. Now, by how much is debatable and depends on a lot of factors however if you want to preach value, upgrade path should be what prioritize. The reason being is pretty self explanatory as for this example, when people do eventually upgrade as they begin to struggle to run games, ultimately their upgrades are going to be more expensive because now they have to get a new motherboard, CPU, CPU cooler if necessary, new RAM, and if necessary also a new power supply. It's far more affordable to make smaller upgrades over a longer period of time than to just buy the cheapest thing now and then having to spend double that amount later on if you want to upgrade.

the problem is, if this purely gaming build you wont need cpu upgrade (nor gpu) in next 5-10 years, ppl chasing insane powers totally forgetting that gaming marked barely quitted 1060 era yesterday, there is only a couple of games demading 3070 lvl of gpu that exist/will release and usually its unoptimised garbage, ppl also forget that gaming graphics market will be cockblocked by consoles soon because its still target platform for devs (check ps4 era)
choosing Ryzen 7 7800x3d instead is good for potential upgrade right, but can you even imagine the games in next 10 years that will ask for something higher? i personally cant, and esp when there is MANY of those games so you wont upgrade just for single techdemo game
my advise, if you cant go overbudged with those 4070su 5800x3d (and with am5 you will need to overbudget a ton), you saved money for a long time, and you are not planning to do upgrades just for upgrades - sticking with your choice is insanely right
P.S remember - gpu and cpu powers rise MUCH faster than graphics of games this days, heck i dont even know for who nvidia gonna release their 6000 and 7000 series gpus, who gonna need them from a gaming community lol? it kinda one of the reasons of 5000 series delay btw

Simply because of the extra threads.

Good advice, if he has the budget for the 5800x3D then it makes no sense to go for AM4 in the first place when he could throw an extra $100 and go for the combination of 7700X (20% faster) and DDR5 and AM5 mobo.
I was building my brother a PC and he gave me a budget of around $500 to build it for him. I made the best I could with that budget for an AM4 build with a 5700X, and B550-A Pro motherboard. I had an extra 600w PSU and a GTX 1080 which I gave him for free until he decides to upgrade his GPU properly when the prices go down as the next gen is released. He doesn't do incremental upgrades so going for an AM5 with similar CPU performance was going to cost $150 ($45 for CPU, $35 for RAM, and about $80 for the mobo) extra which was quite a bit over the budget. For reference, he was using an old i5 3rd gen PC with a 1660S GPU and DDR3 RAM.
I like to use CPU Benchmark to compare all CPUs of a certain socket type, and PC Parts Picker to evaluate total prices (I add tax in the cost manually).
My personal next build is going to be an AM5 (goodbye intel). I will likely wait until next year when the prices of the 7900 CPUs go down.

      Bro, i'm from FX8320e to 7700x. It's basically 100% IPC jump or 2x performance.
      I won't upgrade my PC until AM7

I was expecting you to slag it but, yeah. Makes sense. I had a 3900X. Perfectly solid chip. But certain games I play make better use of the cache in the 5800X3D. Made sense for me to upgrade directly to it.

This gave me everything i needed for me to upgrade my core, recently bought a 7900xtx and am still rocking a r5 3600 so its time ti upgrade 🥳

Upgraded from 3600 to 5800X3D just this week. Wow what a difference. I'm seeing between 100 to 150% performance increase in my main game which is iRacing (paired with an RTX 3080).
My 3600 was running with boosted voltage and all-core overclock of 4.4GHz. My undervolted 5800X3D blows it out of the water and is actually using less power than my 3600 in iRacing.

Already had a 3700x and 3080 build from 2020. Bought a 5800x3d bundle including b550 asus tuf 2 WiFi board and 16gb ram for 329. I kept the 58003d for my 3080 and took rest of new parts and my old chip and started a build for my 11 year old. Last thing to get is graphics card going with 6750xt.

7500f + 32g + a620 used is almost the same price at my place as ONLY 5800x3d(350 vs 300), not including ram and mobo, so it's cheaper for almost the same performance. Thou 5700x3d for 230 seems much more interesting than 5800x3d.
p.s. sold my am4 to move to am5

I built mine a couple of years ago and when the 5800x3d came out I bought one. I had the MB about 3 months earlier from ebay a X570 Gaming Plus by MSI for 99.00 bucks and 32 gigs of ddr4 3600 cl16 corsair for 110.00. The case and PSU I already had. After a Bios update it has worked with not issues. GFX are a A770 16gb card and I haven't looked back. Nvidia is WAY to much for me dollar wise and with driver updates my SYS is very happy!

I actually just made this build new last month. I did it anyway because I saved 180 dollars using a microcenter bundle plus the am4 motherboard and ram cost much less allowing me to stay on budget.

I have to agree completely with this build.
As someone that just upgraded from a 2600x and a 2070 super to the 5800X3D and a 4080 super; the only reason I went with the 5800X3D was the fact I didn't want to be force into upgrade the mobo and ram as well. I would've essentially had to have an entirely new build. So, I got the 5800X3D to avoid a fresh build.
Though, if I wasn't just upgrading, I would've went with the newer socket.

Bought a r5-3600 with x570 in 2019, upgrade to an 5800x3d a couple of months ago + a 4070ti, and i feel this setup could reach nearly 2029 without struggling too much. 10 year plattform. Props to AMD.

Yes the 5800x3d is on a dead playform. Its also still a BEAST of a cpu and will last you well into AM5's lifespan. Id personally still consider it a viable option until ddr5 and lets say the 8th gen Zen CPU's are being phased out.

I've been waiting for the 4080 super. The 4070ti super is way too damn close to a 4080. Ended up just ordering a 4090 for actual retail price and not inflated

@@rambosausage8881 4070 ti is not the same as a 4070 ti super. It literally has a 4080 die in it

@WCGwkf apologies I didn't see the super bit, but btw there's a quite a difference between the 4070ti super and the vanilla 4080 which I have, and basically negligible difference between the 4080/4080 super.

The super on the end of 4080 basically means "cheaper" 3% if that it's a mild overclock in terms of difference.

you're absolutely right, however, if you don't have the budget to cover an entire am5 kit with ddr5, then the best way to go is with the ryzen 7 5800x3D. It may not be future proof but your gpu will and the a new case aswell. (if you go for a bit one.) This'll last you a decade and afterwards, you'll go for the newest and hopefully can afford it then!
