Curved jump dashes are better in 3D, when the goal is to go fast, but in 2D, straight lines are better, as they're easier to land platforming with and you can better predict your landing spot, although the curved jump dashes feel much more natural.
That one depended on how the physics were feeling that day, or if you picked the PS2 version over the good ones on Xbox, GameCube and PC. Sometimes it was good, but other times, it'd screw you over for no reason.
I love the blue streak effect on the other adventure era jump dashes for sure, but for me nothing compares to the satisfaction of the original from Adventure. I think it just comes down to the pose Sonic does as he falls, it’s perfection.
Finally someone who appreciates the jump dash! I have missed it since Generations but never heard anybody mention it till now. I do prefer the kind in generations though as it really helps with platforming, especially in 2D. Curved jump dashes do maintain momentum better but I feel the boost achieves a similar effect anyway.
If they replace it with the double jump then they should make it an option to choose which one you want. I just noticed that the ds version of colors has the jump dash while the console version has the double jump….why
The console version of Colors has both the air dash and double jump, was even used in the footage in this video, although it is like in Unleashed where if you have boost meter you can't use it and just air boost instead.
Heroes jump dash my beloved Shoutout to Project 06 for allowing you to customise your jump dash. I much prefer the curved types to the Generations style.
The dream cast era keeps the momentum after u jump dashed but the modern era doesn’t. The only game which mix both together is sonic dream team. Think about it, dream teams jump dash push u straight instead of curved while maintaining the momentum. All being said I think dream cast is the most natural
I still only play Adventure 1 & 2 since they came out so I honestly didn't know that was gone wow. It looks strange af completely straight but it's better than nothing! They need to bring back the bounce bracelet too mang
If both moves achieve the same outcome, I don't see what the big deal is. I mean, yeah, it was bad in Forces, because you needed to have some energy, but in Frontiers, your boost auto regenerates.
My favorite thing about jump dash was the fact that if you timed it right before landing, you could carry the momentum of the dash into a run and get a big speed boost. Was it the best option? Not always, spindash would usually suffice in a lot of cases. But there were points in levels where you could use it when landing on higher elevation, making it a more worthwhile option. This is also why I prefer curved jump dashes over straight ones because the straight dashes never really let you land on the ground fast enough to get that instant momentum boost. In fact, it almost feels like the “straight” dashes (at least in frontiers) curve upwards and make it basically impossible to even land with it. Of course, straight dashes are overall better for general platforming and clearing gaps, but something about the curved dashes made it feel more tactile and engaging to use. It made you think more about the level’s terrain and how your movement would interact with it. I even feel like it encouraged you to approach basic platforming challenges by experimenting with your movekit, like trying to generate enough speed with spindash to launch yourself across gaps for example. And this is coming from someone that completed Frontiers 100% before playing SA1 😂 Moreover tho, I think that is also why Homing Dash was so well-liked in Frontiers. It was a strong and fast option that could optimize your run times, but it required you to think about how you could use the level design with your kit rather than just yourself. For example, thinking about enemy and spring locations and your location relative to those targets. Aspects of the level design that you will always see, but you would need to recognize and think about the potential setups for Homing Dashes. I would love to see Sega return to curved dashes in future games, but I could see people missing the straight ones as well. I’d be cool if they let us use both types in Sonic’s kit. That would probably suffice for most players too.
Sonic heroes air dash sounded so vicious aswell, if you stand there as sonic, you can hear tails and knuckles air dashing/homing attack the enemies. It looked so clean with the speed and sound
I’d prefer the jump dash over the double jump since the former is a move that’s unique to Sonic. Double jumps are used in other franchises so it’s just normal
I love jump dash a lot. It hasn’t come back for years! Jump Dash in Sonic Heroes was perfect and I love it!😍 But ever since Sonic Colours and Sonic Lost world, they’ve replaced with double jump and it’s boring and I hate double jump. Which is way Sonic games was going downhill. At least in the remake of Sonic Generations, the same short Jump Dash came back, but unfortunately not for Shadow.😢 I hope they will bring back Jump Dash in the future Sonic games. I want the same Jump Dash from Sonic Heroes back in the future.❤
It was certainly more satisfying to use in the older games. You'd gain that quick dash when you jump which I feel it gets slower when close to hitting the ground. The newer jump dash would give you a straight dash that abruptly ended and left you in the air. It's rather slowing you down than giving you a quick boost.
I don't think I mentioned that Shadow was getting it. I was talking about how we havent seen Jump Dash in 13 years and now we finally get it back after so long. This wasnt focused on the Shadow portion of Sonic X Shadow Generations but the Sonic portion instead. Their different abilities will be on full display that's for sure and I know a lot of people are hyped for Shadow's story, but I still wanna give attention to the remaster side of things that is Sonic Generations
The curved dash feels MUCH more natural. I know its unlikely, but I wish there would be customization to bring it back, lets say they include new shop items and its there.
Sonic heroes and shadow the hedgehog actually have a different type of jumpdash that scales with your upwards momentum. For example if you’re going up the jumpdash will send you a bit higher and if you’re going down it will send you way lower
I’m kinda surprised that the jump dash lasted up intel generations (besides colors) because of how the double jump felt like natural evolution for *those types of games* But I’m wondering if we might see the return it in more future games with the director of frontiers possibly wanting to remove the boost in future titles. (Also I like it curved more)
I don't like it when jumpdashes don't uncurl the characters on activation, something about them throwing their arms out midair (plus the trail of course) makes it look more like a proper dash... oh yeah, and the double jump feels like it's only there because steering in modern games kinda sucks, even in Frontiers there's a weird arch to turning midair and it really sucks
Since boost is now activated via the right trigger, I see no reason to not have both double jump and air dash. Air dash on X/Square and double jump on A/Cross. Idk just seems right.
it’s labeled as an air dash in Sonic Dream Team. Also looks very different than what I’m referring to in the video. But if you see it as a Jump Dash, then that’s fine too! I like that
Don’t get me wrong, the ability is very useful in Adventure Style games as it allows, you to pick up speed really quickly. But it’s far less practical in a boost game since you can just perform an air boost. And even if you’re just trying to get to a platform slightly in front of you, you can just perform a stomp quickly after. Honestly, I would prefer a double jump in boost games to help with vertical platforming
