  • Meika is back in Melbourne for the holidays and came to the studio for a shoot, and Peter made her be the client. He decided on the lighting but she was in charge of everything else. He then tried to take her to the next level by getting away from her usual posing she does every day on commercial shoots and get her to be more ‘real life’ Meika.

Great to watch you work and interact - so much more useful than 'the usual' videos focusing on unimportant technical details! I too am moving more and more to constant lighting (as powerful enough constant lights have become more affordable) - the other bonus in addition to pre-vis is being able to create videos as well with the same set-up saving a lot of time!

Wonderful video Peter. Very natural flow with Meika. We just shot two days on the sunscreen campaign in our studio with constant lighting as we were also shooting video for the Tradeshow reel in the same session. It worked out well and I think it helps the newer models flow and drift a bit more instead of reacting or anticipating the pop of the strobes.

The good ol' Mamiya RB67, what a boat anchor they were! I went from a Mamiya twin lens to one of those, and then a Hasselblad 503. It was just to heavy to lug around doing weddings. I was surprised at just how soft the RB was in the video. We really have moved on with sharpness. Nice shoot too... Have a great silly season.

"The very handsome neighbour look" excellent captured.
Always have a bit of a laugh when you explain that super sharp is not the goal and then proof it with an amazing shot
By default I have all the sharping switch off in my RAW editor, basically it is only useful when you print (when needed), totally get your opinion.

You're the Master, Peter. Everything I've been taught, is your second nature. I love your process. It leans more toward acting and filmmaking, than still photography. The final picture you shared, expressed a transformation. It's interesting to see the masks we wear and how you break them down, to portray your desired look. This session really highlighted that skill, because you gave all the decisions to Meika, apart from the inner motivation/ dialogue. Technical ability aside, the way you draw out personality is how we see you in the photos. On the technical side, using the floor for fill and balance, was incredibly economical and effective. That's a new trick to add to my bag. Thank you.
    I really enjoyed this one.
Wishing you all a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year! 🙏🎁🎄🎅🌞

i like the whole effect with longer lenses, both the added "space" for the subject's comfort, and the slight "flattening", plus, of course, depth of field...i used to have a 200 mm imagine....sigh...on my 6x7 i use the 165/2.8, or 300/4.0
nice to see your "translation" among the different looks, and helping your "client" understand more of the process, and, actually, getting her confidence in "her" look...

I remember some of Meika's earliest shoots/videos. This one is really cool, and interesting, and the added Film shots at the end. Quote "When Peter Lindbergh took a group shot of five models in New York’s Meatpacking district in 1989, he didn’t know he was anointing them as the definitive beauties of the decade. The women were Naomi Campbell, Linda Evangelista, Tatjana Patitz, Christy Turlington, and Cindy Crawford. Though the models were known in the fashion world, their ascension to pop culture stardom began in front of Lindbergh’s lens." Well Mekia's Ascension started with Peter Coulson. Also Reminds of the Linda Evangelista Photographed by Steven Meisel which made her famous, and coined a phrase “get out of bed for less than $10,000 a day.”

@@PeterCoulsonPhotographer I just want to add one note about skin texture and automated photo processing by AI.
I tried Luminar Neo today and it is very careful with skin texture, I was almost impressed, because usually I edit everything manually to make people look like people and not porcelain dolls. So Luminar makes this work much easier and very fast. I don't know if I'll buy a subscription yet, but I had fun processing the first few photos.
Of course, it also allows you to break the geometry of your model with all sorts of eye enlarging and "body transformations", but using your own mind, this tool can be useful, especially for speeding up the final processing of a large number of photos. Judging by your comment, you don't use such tools, or you're not satisfied with what you get. You can try it when you have some time for it.. ;)

Getting the authentic expression and pose, and away from the commercial looks, getting that genuine from-the-heart looks completely changes the images. On the processing, and keeping what's done as minimal as possible,.. vs redrawing everything in photoshop,... Never understood why one would hire a model for that models look and features, and then change everything in software afterward, it'd be like hiring Marylin Monroe and redrawing to look like Sophia Loren.
