    I work at a vet hospital. A well-known phenomenon in vet med is pets who do better with women/owners who believe their pet to have been abused based on their response towards men. The transphobic comments that my trans woman coworker gets are wild. A recent client, wearing pride flag accessories, told her she was uncomfortable with her handling her pet (due to pet being better with women) because coworker "is not a complete woman." She went on to say coworker should "work harder to present as more female." It's totally messed up. A guy client yesterday called her "sir," noticed he messed up, muttered about "uh oh, I think 'he's' offended." I talked to the client as he checked out, he technically apologized, but made it clear he barely wanted to refer to my coworker as a human being much less her preferred gender, and emphasized what a hassle "all this woke stuff" is for him. I told him, "it's ok to make mistakes, as long as you learn from them." He looked at me like I slapped him. I'll never get how he justifies all the effort it takes for him to be that relentlessly transphobic, when learning to use a new pronoun is so much less effort.
    For the record, pets don't care what's in your pants or on your birth certificate. If pets do sense hormones, a trans woman has higher estrogen than most cis women. But from experience, even pets who prefer one gender to another, mostly respond to attitude and demeanor. I've had "women only" pets that do fine with 6 ft+ bearded cis men because they have good body language and emotional awareness.

      My parents adopted a dog who was very nervous around my dad at first, probably because of this. But we worked with her, chummed her with treats and fun one-on-one time, and helped her become much more comfortable with tall AMAB people. People can help their pets recover from and deal with trauma. And you're right about relaxed body language and emotional awareness. Unless the dog was actively showing more stress toward your coworker than present AFABs, Ms. Pride Merch was just using her dog as an excuse to be an asshole.
      I hope your coworker's doing well. Glad you're supporting her. The other client may not become a better person, but he knows people around her will not put up with his shitty behavior, and will hopefully act accordingly. That's important.

      While that's not a large sample size, as trying to indoctrinate someone into being a gender they aren't is super unethical so we don't try to do it for purposes of experiments, the fact that in the one case it was tried it failed, and the fact that trans people can often figure out that something is, in some way, wrong, or even that they're specifically trans (even if they don't know the word), even in social situations where they're denied access to information about trans people... Offering you therapy is not in and of itself bad advice, it would help them and you find out if you are transgender or if your feelings are more a side effect of something else, but the utter state that is mental healthcare provision in the UK (you say GP so I'm assuming British) renders that worthless as a suggestion.

    The reason there was boys and girls chess was because boys were taught chess earlier and girls weren't. It wasn't lady-like for a girl to be playing a cerebral game like chess. So girls were excluded from playing in a competitive way.
    Then when they were allowed to play it was only allowed separately because "what if they beat a boy 😲😱. Can't have some upstart girl beating out men who would have placed higher if it weren't for her. And obviously she didn't win because of her skill it was because the boys were distracted by her feminine wiles."

      @suchnothing 7 месяцев назад +4

      @cielvt noooooo im so sorry youre dealing with that. Yeah mental health care in Canada is awful. Unless you have money to go private, your only option is a GP, and they don't know wtf they're doing for mental health. I had a good psychiatrist when I lived in Edmonton, and it was covered under a program at the U of A hospital. But now I'm in Toronto and pretty much all I can do is maintain the progress I've made because my GP doesn't want to refer me to a government covered psych, and I don't have money to go private. My experience has mostly been similar to yours, it's almost impossible to find a doctor who will listen and take time to solve mental health issues. They just give you some excuse for why you don't really need it and move on. It's slowly improving, but while they get their shit together, people like you are left hanging 🥲

Like no changing table in the men’s restroom for example. Using the word “parent” doesn’t erase women when it includes dads, it’s no different when including trans or non binary people.

      You have to keep in mind that terfs are intrinsically sexist and resent womanhood. They define it entirely as being able to carry/raise children, no different than religious fundamentalists do. So when they see parenthood and reproductive language made gender neutral, they view this as”erasing women” because womanhood to them is defined as motherhood, or potential for motherhood. There’s also a particular irony in the fact that many terfs who accuse trans people of erasing women refer to themselves as “large gamete producers” or “adult human female” rather than women.

      For me, if i was trans, it would be totally free, and i'd require no more than just informed consent (that is how i think it should be). In the US, i've heard it can be really expensive, and requires "permission" from a therapist.

    • @Internetexploder1
      @Internetexploder1 7 месяцев назад +1

      @@Giuliana-w1fin the state where I live (heavily Republican right-wing state), the model is 'informed consent'. This means that to get HRT, top surgery, or anything except genital reconfiguration surgery, you don't need a therapist involved at all. Having diagnoses can help make sure insurance pays their part of the cost, but it's not required at all. Your endocrinologist or surgeon or whatever, will only need to sit with you and explain what you can expect to happen, what risks are involved, etc., and then you can get your hormones or surgeries or whatever.
      So it's not like that in all of the US, fortunately. Even some really terrible places allow you to access medical care with very little gatekeeping. On the other hand, the individual cost is much higher here than in some other nations like yours.

      I see it too. Across the board, divisiveness is intensifying - the "us vs. them" mentality, fueled in large part by people believing that everything their favorite podcast bro or televangelist or whichever unqualified-but-speaks-with-conviction-so-they-must-be-right source tells them is true, and it gets regurgitated over and over until it's just accepted as fact. Not once among the many times I've asked for a citation/source of a questionable 'fact'/statistic has one been provided, just crickets (hopefully that means they did do some research and figured out they'd been misled; I don't ask unless I've done some research myself that indicates their claim is flat-out wrong or lacks any valid evidence to support it).
      It's concerning how it's becoming more acceptable to outwardly express any incendiary and dangerous view one may have, including the desire to eliminate other people whom they view as 'different'; it saddens and frightens me as well. I believe in free speech, but that doesn't guarantee freedom from consequences. It's like the pendulum is swinging away from tolerance, away from "reaching across the aisle". History has shown us the atrocities we are capable of when people jump on a bandwagon of fear and hate without questioning the veracity or the implications of the toxic rhetoric they're supporting and spreading, and it usually doesn't end well. Yet I remain hopeful that the "culture wars" (well, all wars) will end in peace or at least a truce, without resulting in extensive collateral damage.

    The attacker was not trans or LGBTQ+ in any way, yet he easily accessed the women’s bathroom, I’m sure this isn’t the only time it happened in the world, and if anyone else was in there at the time I’m sure he wouldn’t have been able to do that.
    Those kids should’ve been safe to use either of the gendered bathrooms, really all public toilets should be unisex, the disabled toilets are and nobody has a problem with that.

    -Get a binder (it can cause permanent damage to ribs if you're not careful, but I'm being careful with it)
    -Wear clothes from the men's section (I get my older brother's hand me downs)
    -Come out to my doctors, and 5 people. Only 5 other people know. 4 of which are family members. I am in a family of 12.
    My doctors did not try to get me to transition. I was at the appointment for other reasons (anxiety med adjustments), and I mentioned being trans as a part of my anxiety. They recommended me a therapist that specializes in trauma and anxiety, and is trans friendly.
    My therapist has told me that while I can't change my body right now, a few years down the line I possibly can. She's also told me that if I come to the conclusion that I'm not trans, she will still support me.
    I'm not being pushed in any direction.

      Exactly! Having the help / info available isn't pushing anyone in a particular direction. I started transitioning at 30, and even then, while I had access to the medical transition, nobody pushed me towards it. I had to voice the fact that I wanted to go on t. I had to voice the fact that I wanted top surgery. Nobody will force-feed you hormones or whatever just because you're gender questionning.

      @viverra 7 месяцев назад +7

      It's actually more complicated than that. A penis and a clitoris are essentially the same tissue, just with developmental differences, and the same is true of ovaries versus testicles. And development can be weird! Emily Quinn (Ted talk here on RUclips) is intersex; as she says in her talk, she has both a vagina and (internal) balls. And despite having XY chromosomes, she is not a man. Being intersex to one extent or another is actually not at all uncommon.

    The gay erasure by trans people caught me off guard...
    I remember when someone who I'd got to know as a lesbian woman (in a relationship with a bisexual woman) bravely announced very publicly that he realised he's in fact a trans man and I later jokingly said to him in private "so you're straight after all" and he looked at me in shock and yelled "Oh my god you're right! I've GOT to tell my girlfriend!"
    I found that very cute, and even though in this case a gay identity might have been "erased" it was still right, semantically. He's a guy, attracted entirely to women.
    But maybe this just shows that we should abandon all these terms altogether and let people be who they are and love who they love.

      I've found that this can actually be touchy in relationships. I know a couple in a traditional hetero marriage, and when the "wife" transitioned, his partner had to adjust to being socially perceived as being in a gay relationship. Luckily, it was not a problem for them. But I also know of a lesbian couple, who after one transitioned, found it distressing to be perceived as straight and sometimes they felt excluded from the lesbian community.
      We SHOULD "abandon all these terms altogether and let people be who they are and love who they love."
      But sometimes, rightly or wrongly, gender can define one's sense of membership in a community.

    A note from someone in America on why people are super upset about gender neutral toilets:
    Here in America, public restroom stalls often are very easy to see into and get into. The doors go from about head height to knee height, with a huge gap by the floor that it’s easy to crawl under. And in many cases, the restrooms aren’t maintained well, so the locks often don’t work or don’t hold tight. It’s very easy for creeps to spy on people or get into stalls. I’ve seen stuff like that in the news on tv before.
    Why aren’t things better maintained or made with better quality? Because no one wants to spend money to fix them up or make them well to begin with. And once the restrooms are made, nobody wants to clean them or take care of them. It’s seen as an awful job no one wants to do. My aunt worked a hardware store and her coworkers refused to clean the restroom and made her do it despite her having disabilities that make it impossible for her to clean all of it without assistance.
    I can’t speak for in other countries, but where I’m from people don’t like the idea of gender neutral restrooms because they’re not safe and private as it is right now. But of course no one wants to spend the money to fix them up and make them ok.
    There used to be a lot of family restrooms in malls and stuff, which are basically a small room with one toilet, a sink, and a changing station for babies. These have a door that fully closes. But people don’t like to build these, because it’s a huge waste of space. If we brought these back in new buildings and made them gender neutral restrooms I really doubt people would have a huge issue. They wouldn’t even need to be labeled as gender neutral if people have a problem with that term. Just call them family restroom like they used to be called and anyone who needs a gender neutral restroom would have one.
    Personally, I’ve used gender neutral restrooms that are like the first kind I described and I’ve never had a problem with them. All I’ve ever seen people do is use the restroom and then leave. Sure there might be people who would abuse the system, but they’re not trans people. The only news stories I’ve seen on tv of people getting hurt in restrooms was when a cishet man did something to a woman. I know people personally who are scared to death that a cishet man will dress up as a woman and go into restrooms to hurt people. I don’t get it at all. Trans people are wonderful people who just want to live their lives and be happy. Not that there couldn’t be an awful trans person, but I’ve never met one. On the contrary, I’ve met plenty of cishet men who went on to commit acts of violence towards men.
    Just my random thoughts on the topic. Idk how other people feel. For context: my family is super transphobic/homophobic/racist so I deal with these sorts of arguments all the time. No matter how many facts I have, they trust their own made up facts in their head over real scientific evidence and research. I even have some people in my family who openly don’t believe in science and scientific research. It’s awful to be around.

    I'm for abolishment of any gender/sex/whatever split in sports. Just people competing. People of similar physical attributes AND similar skill will end up competing with each other, naturally.
    The concept of "Women Sports" was born out of necessity, as women (of all kinds) were deemed "unsuitable" to compete in anything, save for maybe poetry and knitting. Like chess - female league was established to give essentially a whole legion of relatively new and unexperienced players a space to be serious about it.
    But now that any sane person will agree that any person can attempt any sport and it's none of our business, having that split is unneccessary, or even harmful.

Gender ideology didn't change me- I was trans forever. In fact, being told what being trans was from an early age would have saved me a lot of heartache and self-hatred because I would have realized early as opposed to my late twenties that I was trans and could have accepted myself earlier on as opposed to thinking I was just a really butch lesbian and not fully recognizing myself. I spent a bit over 7 years in a US federal prison for sex offenders (over 80% of the population of the prison were there for a sex offence).
    It housed around 1000 inmates at a time, and with turnover of people leaving and new people arriving I can't give an exact number, but I can say with absolute certainty that I met over 2000 inmates over this period.
    Out of that over 2000, there were a total of 4 transgender people if you include me (I was identifying as cis at the time but have learned otherwise since).
    The number of non-white inmates wasn't much higher, maybe a dozen or so.
    That leaves the vast majority of sex offenders in the US as, you guessed it: cis, white, men.
    If you're curious, I can't give exact numbers on hetero vs. homosexual, things get a bit fuzzy for people in prisons, but straight was still an obvious majority.

    But this can still be a good thing to highlight, that this act isn't specifically saying homo or bi, but all sexual orientations including hereto/straight. This to show that this isn't for supremacy but for equality.

    If people are mad that women don't like their breasts, and i know many female presenting women who don't like their breasts, can we take a step back and look at how we think AND SPEAK about breasts? There's a lot of harassment out there that needs stopping. This won't fix gender dysphoria, but it will make life easier for everyone.

They were basically talking about it the whole time to the point I was like “okay I gotta see this bathroom”, and it had an open doorway, a shared sink area, and floor to ceiling stalls. Likeeee tell me where the problem is?? They brought up weird points like how “women like doing their makeup in the bathroom and gossiping”??? My dad even said the last time he was there he washed his hands next to a little girl and it made him uncomfortable, like bro.. why?

    I have cancer. I have now had two different surgeries, the second of which required almost 2 weeks in hospital, and begun a year of immunotherapy in a specialist cancer care center. I have nurses coming into my home to change dressings, physio, and adaptive equipment I need while I regain mobility provided free of charge. Without these interventions, I still had a 70% chance of surviving the next decade, and I probably would have had fairly decent quality of life for most or even all of that, and yet I don't think you could find anyone in the UK who'd argue that treating me is not a good use of NHS money. And yet providing puberty blockers to kids and medical transition to older teens and adults isn't considered a worthwhile use of that same money, even though their survival odds are, in many cases, worse than mine. It's insane. And so horrificially cruel.
    (Mind you, people also say the same shit about chronic illnesses and long-term disabilities, so despite the fact that every person on earth who doesn't die tragically young will be disabled during their lifetime, so if people can't even advocate for their own future selves, I don't know why I expected them to be capable of caring about other people!)
