I have been shooting percussion revolvers for a good many years. Even though I am a big fan of black powder, (I make my own), still I have shot a lot of Pyrodex over the years and have no problems with it. To me, making my own powder and molding my own bullets is just part of the nostalgia. The biggest argument I hear from others is the corrosive nature of Pyrodex. My answer to them has always been the same answer you just gave, "Clean your guns and that won't be a problem". I really enjoy your channel especially the fact that you don't just regurgitate the same old spill that I hear on 95% of the black powder channels.
I make my own powder and bullets too..but I'm new to the hobby...I have a conversion cylinder also...the same 45 cal bullet 200 grain works for both..I'm hearing a lot about the brass frame "stretching" is this something to worry about? Or is there anything I should know?
@miraxus6264 as far as brass frame…they will loosen with heavy loads over time. I dial down my powder loads. Check out my video on the Griswald-Gunnison a while back I talk about this at length.

The reasons I use Pyrodex are 1/ My local gun store doesn't keep BP. 2/ I've used Pyrodex in revolvers and cartridges for the last 15 years without them rusting before my very eyes as some would have us believe. 3/ Pyrodex is proven to be more powerful than BP. 4/ Pyrodex costs less, and as you rightly say, being lighter, there's more volume in a 1lb bottle than 1lb of BP and therefore goes further. 5/ I've used BP and find Pyrodex slightly easier to clean. I began shooting at age 8, in 1958, under the watchful eye of my great uncle. He carried an 1882 Colt SAA in 45 Colt. He loaded 40gr of ff black powder and his own cast bullets. For a treat he brought out his father's brace of ivory handled 1851 Navy Colts for us to shoot. I was fortunate to have had such a wonderful mentor as a boy. And I still shoot many percussion revolvers and cartridge revolvers to this day. I was in my great uncle's will, where I was to receive his old 45, and the brace of '51 Navies, but his no-good rat of a son grabbed 'em all and sold everything to cover his gambling debts. 🤬 As to Pyrodex, I've been using it quite a bit since it was introduced in the 1970s with good results. And my great uncle was a fanatic about weapons cleaning and maintenance. And I'm the same way. 😏

That makes sense! I’ve never left mine loaded for long period. But I have used it in paper cartridges that sit and they went off. That must be different. Thanks
Gun owners are like truckers and fisherman. Blackpowder has a lower flashpoint than pyrodex. Using my greatplains rifle with no11 caps, I get misfires all the time. Blackpowder in my greatplains, zero hangfires or misfires. Pyrodex in my revolvers, much more reliable. Cones Caps and Powder. Finding the right mix.
Sadly, in a way, I have only fired one true BP shot from any BP firearm in my life. That one was from a .58 caliber "Buffalo Hunter" rifle that way back in the 1960s was sold/produced(?) by Navy Arms. The gent that allowed me to cap off that one shot (a .58 caliber round ball into a Maxwell House coffee can full of concrete and gravel) opened my eyes to BP/muzzle loading. Over the decades I have owned a number of BP firearms and enjoyed every one of them....Loaded with Pyrodex! Sadly, finding a store that stocked real BP of any brand was not an option and I have had no choice but to utilize substitutes with Pyrodex being the easiest, and often cheapest, to find. I've yet to have a failure to fire with Pyrodex nor had any difficulty cleaning any of my firearms afterwards.
Hey partner do your puck or press your powder wet? Some folks use a cannabis pollen puck press and then when the puck is dry they rescreen it, I have not yet tried it.

Putting aside the black powder/Pyrodex debate, I've wondered if the reason we have "hotter" percussion caps today is because of the substitute powders like Pyrodex, which supposedly is harder to ignite than real black powder. These hotter caps, along with their thin material construction, are a large contributing factor to the modern cap jam issues.
Shooting synthetic has many advantages and it is not until you make your own black that you fully realize that today's black is not even close to historically accurate. I love Pyrodex but the best synthetic was a brand called alliant, it no longer exists. Synthetic urine is a laboratory-made substance that mimics real urine, with similar ingredients like nitrates, sulfates, and urea. Pyrodex contains more energy per unit of mass but is less dense.
I exclusively use black powder substitutes in all my percussion guns and save my black powder for my flintlock guns. I live in Oregon and there is only one gun store in five Western states that sells black powder that is in Springfield Oregon. It is almost 4 hours away.
I shoot black powder because I make my own and enjoy having a part in the whole process. Just have fun and shoot what you have and don't worry about what folks say. Many years ago I got laughed off a range for pulling out a can of Pyrodex. Here I am 40 years later still making smoke. From time to time I use a little Pyrodex also mostly when messing with duplex loads. Don't worry shoot what you got.
You are correct. I will use what is available. Yes, I have a lot of BP in my cabinet, but I also have Pyrodex and Triple 7. I do like shooting BP but not because I am a BP snob. But, I have found that a flintlock has a hard time with both Pyrodex and Triple 7. I do not know why. Anyway, there is a place in the BP community for BP substitutes.

I used to use pyrodex... I wont knock anybody who does, but my mileage was a little different. After i seasoned my barrels im 5 minutes getting my guns clean. Hot water is all i need... Let em soak for a few minutes, the fowling almost removes itself. Pull them out of my bucket, give em a shake, 5-6 patches, last 2 oiled, and its clean. Wipe it down with an oiled cloth, reassemble, back in my holster it goes. Hilariously, almost exactly the instuctions in the 1860s era ordinance manual. Glad its doing good for ya, ive still got some for a rainy day and im in a bind, but ive even swapped from swiss 3f to 4f now in all my revolvers. Same load, and for me, burns cleaner.
@@CapBallFanatic-gb3jb exactly... 4f makes em bark a lil more, the recoils a bit more, but with a conical, ill take all the energy i can get being a smaller powder charge. 25 grains with a 225 grain kerr in my Dance and Brothers. Been my EDC the last few months, and i dont feel under gunned. Its hittin as good as my 45 colt, maybe a little better based on the depth im getting under ground when i target shoot. Hitting higher too. Got my hands on an old lyman black powder load book with some numbers in it like a smokeless book, it said 4f was a safe load for all of my guns, so i figured I'd try it. Definitely bring the hearing protection... Lol they bark louder
As someone that’s been shooting black powder rifles, and cap and ball revolvers since the Reagan administration I’m going to chime in. For the vast majority of my time shooting BP firearms, I’ve shoot exclusively Pyrodex out of both my percussion rifles and cap and ball revolvers. It’s only in the last year I’ve shot real black powder, and probably made the exact same way people like Wild Bill Hickcock and Jessy James's powder was made. Can I tell a difference in the two shoot? Yes I can! But that’s because one is made commercially the other isn’t, if I was shooting Goex or another commercially made black powder the difference would be almost non-existent. Now I shoot Pyrodex over Black Powder, because I can buy Pyrodex I have to make my own black powder as I cannot buy it locally and I do not like the hazmat charge to order black powder.
I started shooting traditio al bp guns in 1993. I started with pyrodex because it was available and I didn't know anything else. About 1995 I discovered Goex. I had many problems with pyrodex p not being set off by my RWS caps. Never had that problem with bp. So I stopped buying pyrodex. Today I make my own bp .
I live in Hawaii, I have NEVER seen real black powder for sale here! I’m perfectly fine with using whatever I can to make my black powder guns go boom!
I have seen other RUclips videos that show that Pyrodex is actually more powerful than black powder in equal measures. It produces more energy and sends projectiles faster. I’d say the best use for black powder is in flintlocks as black powder substitutes just won’t light consistently.

Yea. A big deal is made of that. It all comes down to the right size ball to me. I use 380 in 36’s and 454 in 44’s. But even with 375 in 36’s it’s ok. I don’t worry about chain fire from the nipple end. But…if you’re cutting a lead ring on your loading…even a thin one…you’re ok. Never had one. If you’re doing this you’ll be fine!
The only difference I've noticed is if the pyrodex is old, then it still works the same but doesn't go off good if revolver is left loaded a few weeks or more , ,new stuff may work better ❤
Yea. A friend just gave me an old pound…the price sticker said 12.99! And I shot through it with no problems. I’ve never left my revolver loaded so I can’t speak to that. But this old stuff had fun shooting that old stuff lol. Thanks
Its very corrosive much more so than black powder but I clean my guns right away so no big deal. I had a partial can someone gave me I had ignition issues with it.

777 powder is sugar based if I remember correctly. It's hotter than BP or Pyrodex, and it was something I tried when it came out, but after that pound was gone, I never bought more. I couldn't get decent groups with it either. 😒
@@CapBallFanatic-gb3jb Well sir, in a 2nd model Dragoon, loaded 20% below max by volume, it was stout! In a '51 Navy, at 15%reduction by volume, it had the recoil of a 38Spl +P. I finally lowered it to 20%, with a bit of cornmeal filler, and it felt more like it. I finally regulated the remaining of the 777 to loading 45-70 405gr cast with again, cornmeal filler, to 1250fps from a trapdoor rifle. And it took me an hour of combined cleaning over three days get it properly clean. There's something odd about 777 fouling that defies conventional cleaning. And in an early Marlin Guide Gun in 45-70, the same load was accurate, but produced rust in the bore, 2 hours after shooting only three rounds on a hog hunt. That's when I discontinued its use. Personally, I don't think that it's a good thing. But that's my opinion.
@anangryranger thank you! Like I said I have no experience. My issue is calculating the lower volume load. Not sure I want to mess with it. Everyone says it’s clean…but as you know, there’s a lot claimed about a lot that’s flat wrong. So I take your word for it. I’ll let you know.
ive never fired real black in my kentucky rifle it the stores here dont carry it also 80 grains of hodgdon 2 fg packs a pretty good kick in fact im gonna probably drop my load (hehe) 80 gtains and kicking that point crescent moon butt stock into my shoulder hurts after about three shots
Is it true that if you shoot a duplex load, maybe 2-3 grains of smokeless mixed with pyrodex will clean up the fouling per shot ? Making it easier to clean your Black powder guns at the end of the day.
Nothing wrong with Pyrodex !! I started using it late 70’s and now my go to is triple seven. Lets face it real Black powder is sorta a hassle to get because it’s now classified as an explosive. Now to run my flintlocks real black powder is mandatory IMHO.
I find that the sub stuff is more expensive than real black. And I know where I can get real black in West Michigan. Only 15 minutes from my house. I prefer the real BP to the sub. I do a lot of reenacting and sub doesn't work-- it comes out like sparklers.
@macebell. Flintlocks are not the discussion here ! Your argument has no merit . Use real Black all you want, I'm 900 miles from the nearest real black that I can purchase over the shelves. Trip 7 and Pyrodex all day everyday for me in my cap and ball revolvers and it works 100% of the time.

When leaving a revolver loaded for extended time pyrodex will misfire so I won't use it because I hunt a lot with my revolves

I finally regulated the remaining of the 777 to loading 45-70 405gr cast with again, cornmeal filler, to 1250fps from a trapdoor rifle. And it took me an hour of combined cleaning over three days get it properly clean. There's something odd about 777 fouling that defies conventional cleaning. And in an early Marlin Guide Gun in 45-70, the same load was accurate, but produced rust in the bore, 2 hours after shooting only three rounds on a hog hunt. That's when I discontinued its use. Personally, I don't think that it's a good thing. But that's my opinion.
@anangryranger thank you! Like I said I have no experience. My issue is calculating the lower volume load. Not sure I want to mess with it. Everyone says it’s clean…but as you know, there’s a lot claimed about a lot that’s flat wrong. So I take your word for it. I’ll let you know.
These Italian reproduction weren't around in the 19 century so there not historically accurate either
ive never fired real black in my kentucky rifle it the stores here dont carry it also 80 grains of hodgdon 2 fg packs a pretty good kick in fact im gonna probably drop my load (hehe) 80 gtains and kicking that point crescent moon butt stock into my shoulder hurts after about three shots

Is it true that if you shoot a duplex load, maybe 2-3 grains of smokeless mixed with pyrodex will clean up the fouling per shot ? Making it easier to clean your Black powder guns at the end of the day.

Yes it is true! But of course only in Black Powder Cartridge guns, it will give higher velocities as well as burning much cleaner.

Nothing wrong with Pyrodex !! I started using it late 70’s and now my go to is triple seven. Lets face it real Black powder is sorta a hassle to get because it’s now classified as an explosive. Now to run my flintlocks real black powder is mandatory IMHO.
Yes it is. I run real black in my flinters too.
I find that the sub stuff is more expensive than real black. And I know where I can get real black in West Michigan. Only 15 minutes from my house. I prefer the real BP to the sub. I do a lot of reenacting and sub doesn't work-- it comes out like sparklers.

@macebell. Flintlocks are not the discussion here ! Your argument has no merit . Use real Black all you want, I'm 900 miles from the nearest real black that I can purchase over the shelves. Trip 7 and Pyrodex all day everyday for me in my cap and ball revolvers and it works 100% of the time.
