So, as an OSP fan, I went through this video, your "Trope Talk", and the related OSP Trope Talk, and I never once got any plagiarism vibes from your content. Basic Skewmorphism is not a crime, and your tone and vibe is very different, as well as the content you covered (I learned about the names of UN tropes from you, as OSP never covers them). I know what that comment said was scary, but as someone who used to do YT stuff, just google your titles first. Keep up your work!
That was so thorough of you, thank you for all that effort and kind words T.T I was already too afraid that I might subconsciously remember any of OSP's video I didn't watch it entirely myself, I just accepted that the commenter was right because I don't think I'm saying anything nuanced. I am beyond happy my video was informative in the end though and provided something for you :)
three things. 1. I mainly follow Robot Co-Op, Phirmth, StarBoiBlue, and BigNoseBug, and they don't really talk about literary conventions and other book-learnin's, so I guess the algorithm was going off of how I've been subbed to OSP for a long time, but I've never clicked their new vids or anything; I think it was for a Phoenix Wright thing they did years ago? I guess there's no accounting for taste, really, but that's no excuse for the mic-bumping. Negative ten billion out of ten, would not watch again. 2. In your posit here about perspective VS baseline content, you touch on one of the most important things to making creativity continue to function in the overall creative bubble we can encase ourselves in as creators. I unnecessarily say 'we' as if I've done anything; I only posted stuff on my DA years ago, made a few blogging attempts, started some decent Angel Hare fanfics, and began my own writing 5 years ago, but I've yet to really post anything official. However, there's what you also talked about as well. I worried endlessly about either being thought of as a phony/copycat/hack all the time, or having it compared to something I never meant to copy, but do honestly acknowledge as a _contemporary._ A lot of that kept me from getting anything DONE though, let alone ATTEMPTED, and that's where a lot of stuff gets lost, including small, humble, but enjoyable efforts such as your channel here. I don't know what forces were at work to have you appear on my front page today, but I'm glad they did, and I'ma sub because I wanna hear more, and I believe in stickin' up for the little guy (or gal, in this case) 3. As far as internet comments are concerned, if this one is any indication, it's that they can largely be, as the Bard put it, "..full of sound and fury, signifying nothing." I've also never seen Macbeth, I just know that quote. I think with the speed of exposure the internet affords us, we can make snap opinions and believe our better-formed thoughts to NEED to fit into a smaller, faster comment, and that just causes them to devolve into a kind of internet formalism unique to these conversations. I just wouldn't put much stock by a commentator who wants to be heard, but can't take the time to properly spell 'please' or look beyond content that is more than a few months old. Bach wouldn't have survived in a market like that, and I guess that's just a tragedy right there. Good luck, Ollie, thanks for sharing, and I hope I can pick up more about what you're puttin' down in these vids. You have a terrific mind for explanation, a voice for long-form content, and a down-to-earth avatar, which is harder to make than it seems. Maybe she can transform into an actual Bucket of Good Faith in vids like this, little bucket with eyes and a mouth? ✨🪙
This is such a long and thoughtful comment, thank you for your time and words :) The good faith bucket is such a cute idea >.< maybe I should make stickers for the channel so I can throw my doubt away and feel extra unique? :D I totally relate to your own posting struggles. To be fair, DA was a mess back in the day, and you were likely to have someone claim you stole their OC just by breathing tho x) If your comment is any indication of the quality of things you produce, I hope you manage to work towards sharing your stuff online more :) You've also got a very nice, kind voice! Thanks again, I hope to see you around :)
Thank you so much T.T everyone has been so nice, I was worried any OSP fans I drew over would get mad that I wasn't only a ripoff but that I was click-baiting too, but I really just felt bad that I was seen as a copycat. Thank you again, I will carry the word "integrity" around with me as I move forward with the channel and grow :)
Just do your thing, Open Book. I've never heard of you before now, but I don't really see a lot of resemblance between you and OSP. I do legitimately hope you make it in, I can see you put a lot of effort into your videos.
Thank you so much T.T Everyone's nice comments have put my anxiety into perspective and I will do my best to carry on like normal and not driven by fear! :)
I don't know why this was recommended to me, but you seem earnest and well-meaning, and... I wish you didn't feel you had to justify yourself to dickheads on the internet. I'll be following from now on.
Oh ty, I wish I hadn't felt compelled to justify myself so much not too, since everyone's been so understanding ':) good to be forthright about it though I guess, thanks for sticking around :)
Subscribed and support. Too out of it to think of something more intelligent to say. Well put together video. We'll done. I'll go check out your other vids.
Well, that's the idea with idiots; they see similarities, they take it for plagiarism. Be it inspiration, similar themes or just plain coincidence, when you are on the internet, you *will* deal with idiots. My advice to you is to avoid engaging with them, or feeling like you owe them an explanation. Their one, and only goal, is to demotivate others.
Thank you for the words of advice! I'm going to come out of this much more confident thanks to everyone like you. I can't be any more *myself* than I am, but also need to accept I can't please everyone and maybe.. everyone isn't worth pleasing?
I vouch personally for how seriously you take plagiarism and AI principles in the art space when I shared with you my experience with someone knowingly feeding my work into an AI bot without my permission. I know there would be zero intent on your part to do anything like this on purpose. I agree with you on the logical absurdity of inferring all content creators must scour the Internet to make sure absolutely nothing crosses over. You can apply that absurdity to literally anything that's ever been created or observed--it's unrealistic A simple example would be movie discussions--If I search for reviews/critiques of a single movie, there will be hundreds of articles and videos for that same movie, and a few are bound to say the same things only with completely different people coming to the same conclusion (of which there are a finite amount!). The same thing with Tropes--every single one is known and discussed and documented and commented on, so... what's the hard cut off from further discussion? 573 instances of this trope has been discussed so it is now off the table forever going forward? "Oh, shoot, honey, someone else already painted a picture of an apple. You're not allowed to do that now. Pick another fruit. No, that one's taken... That one, too... Hmmm... Well I guess you'll have to invent your own fruit or you'll never be able to paint one." Sorry for the mini-rant there. Plagiarism is a fear of mine that I might accidentally do something similar and get sued/harassed/attacked for something I didn't intend, because I hadn't read the entire collection of books in human history to make sure no one else ever wrote the same thing the same way, JUST TO BE SAFE from having my career destroyed because of it. If anyone thinks I missed the point on the title/look of the channel, I think those are well discussed by you already. But I've seen both videos, independent of each other, and I didn't notice at all. (It might be because, though I love the content, OSP's host talks way too fast, and the awesome drawings accompanying the production aren't on the screen long enough to appreciate them. Whenever I focus on a drawing, I miss everything that she says, and vice versa. I don't know why anyone thinks that was a great aesthetic to have your audience miss half of the content unless they are literally pausing every few seconds throughout the whole video.)
Totally agree with this comment about how you can't be expected to always create 100% original content, there will always be similarities to pre-exisiting works, and the way that commenter talks comes off as thinking OSP owns the format, it's as simple as just talking and theorizing about stuff with a stand-in and relevant images. This is a presentation. Personally though, I like OSP aesthetic of accompanying drawings and fast pace, pausing isn't a huge issue for me, but that's why there exists multiple channels covering similar topics, because besides the topic and structure, their own personality and choices suit different people.
Thanks for the vote of confidence! The fruit analogy was also a really fair point. Especially for art. I think one of the scariest parts of being a creator on the internet right now is that everything is so saturated, the likelihood of someone feeling like anything you do is too similar is almost unavoidable.. And being on Deviantart back in the day was already bad enough with its "don't steal my OC" stuff lol It's interesting that OSP is too fast/distracting sometimes. If I was a teacher I probably would have shown their content in classes because it's so informative, but I hadn't thought about how with different learning styles it would definitely be too quick to actually learn properly from! Thanks for all that :D Helped get my brain in order a bit.
That's a really great point, both of you! I hadn't thought at all about the necessity of presenting information in different ways for the sake of what's best for the learner. I was going to step away from informative essays for a bit but this has really boosted my confidence with the value I may be able to provide, covering a topic that's been done already before :)
This just got on my radar and I am a fan of OSP. However, I never seen your videos so I cannot say if you did plagiarize. I would watch your videos anyway.
I think when the using a VR anime character fad passes you will look back at using one with a hint of cringe, but in terms of talking about what you are interested in obviously you are going to have similar interests as other people so to call you a rip off is silly
Of all the things I'm going to cringe at about myself in the future, I think my insecurity is going to weigh heavier than the avatar but thank you heh ':)
I can't believe you're copying the format of another RUclipsr who [checks notes] talks about things from TVTropes.
