  • It's the Time of year again. Everyone is getting into the Holiday Spirit. Everyone is decorating, putting up Christmas Trees, House lights, & watching Holiday specials. As we near the end of the year, it is that time of year when Polar Express Trips are happening in various parts of the country. In 2021 my first chase with the Western Maryland #1309 was during the Cumberland Polar Express trips. In 2022 the 1309 would operate the Frostburg Polar Express trips, and watching videos I instantly regretted not going for these excursions. On the weekend of December 8th-10th, 2023 I would finally chase the Frostburg Polar Express excursions.
Each morning the 1309 would ferry from Ridgely to Cumberland. After taking water they would ferry from Cumberland to Frostburg. After that, the Diesels would tow the train down past Sunnyside, at 1 30, 3 30, 5 30 & 7 30 to where the North Pole is set up for 2023. The diesel lashup this year was #558 & #501 After reaching the North Pole 1309 would lead the trip back to Frostburg. Allowing for shots that would be difficult to achieve during the normal runs due to the hiking in. Over the course of all 3 days, I would chase the Ferry, and the excursions with the Diesels & Steam leading. From Various spots along the beautiful Allegany Mountains on the old Western Maryland with Great Diesel & Steam action I hope you all enjoy my coverage of my chase with the 1309 on the Frostburg Polar Express
    Day 1 1:10
    Day 2 24: 39
    Day 3 41:27
A huge shout out goes to ‪@APSL2018‬ for the night time lighting on Day 2 at Trimble Road.
I also chased these excursions with my good friend ‪@DroppedSignal‬ and ‪@MiddleTennesseeRailProductions‬ Joined us as well. I also ran into ‪@TheBigBananaRailfan‬ & ‪@NorthRaleighRailfan‬
The Western Maryland #1309 is a Compound Articulated H6 Class Mallet Steam Locomotive built by Baldwin Locomotive Works in 1949 for the Chesapeake & Ohio Railroad. It would operate until just 1956 before being retired. In 1972, luck played in favor with the Locomotive as it went to the B&O Railroad Museum in Baltimore Maryland. In 2014 it was announced that the Western Maryland Scenic Railroad would acquire the 1309, and restore it to operation while the class 734 went down for it's 1472 day Inspection. In 2020 after 7 years the engine would move under its own power, and in 2021 it debuted in Revenue service during the Cumberland Polar Express Trips.
One more adventure remains for 2023, and if all goes well that will happen this weekend with the Pere Marquette #1225 during the last runs of the 2023 North Pole Express season!
