- Kishi Bashi joined us in the early morning hours for this visceral performance of “Manchester.” Buzzsessions are performance music videos produced by The Wild Honey Pie. With each new episode, we capture footage of our favorite bands as they record alternate studio quality versions of their songs.
Kishi Bashi is the pseudonym of Athens, GA-based singer, songwriter, and virtuosic violinist Kaoru Ishibashi. His music is utterly unique in the original sense-that is, literally one of a kind. It is a beautiful beast catalyzed by intricate, intertwining loops of violin, which work together to create colorful emotional tapestries that are far more than the sum of their already breathtaking parts. Ishibashi’s lyrics are brainy, imaginative, and poetic musings that often read like vignettes of surrealist fantasy.
In this 2012 Buzzsession, he performs extended versions of two tracks-the effusive and jubilant “Manchester” and the undulating, introspective “I Am The Antichrist To You”-from his debut album 151a. Pronounced ichi-go ichi-e, the album is named for a Japanese term that, as he explains, “signifies the joy or the beauty of a singular moment in time.” What’s striking is that Ishibashi’s style of performance is, in itself, a celebration of that concept: because of the spontaneous, semi-improvisational nature of looping, every performance of a given song differs from the next, each acting as its own singular moment unlike any other.

Kishi Bashi is, to me, one of the most beautiful composers and songwriters of this generation. The meanings of all of his songs and the compositions behind them are so in depth and this is just absolute perfection. Definitely the most underrated artist now.
Just found Mr. Bashi yesterday. I have not really been living for 31 years apparently. Can not get enough and this performance brought tears to my eyes.

Just once in a while you see something so mesmerising, so complete, so beautiful, it almost resets your mind. To say Kissi Bashi is talented an understatement, a genius is closer but even that is so often used it pales. Suffice to say having seen him and listened to all his work, he is someone I'll definitely be revisiting and seeing again and again.
His music calmed me down this morning on my way to an important exam. I was really stressed but this song made it lessen :') Thank you, Mr. Bashi
