I did the same on my N62. It's a job for the experienced mechanics. But glad i did it, after removing the engine mount if found brittle powersteering wires snapping in my hands.
Oh a little tip: check the oil pressure switch they are known for leaking and making a mess ;)

George Thanks for the link to this video. Yeah my N62 is going to be a fun challenge. I’ve worked on mostly the top of the engine and basic maintenance but now it’s due for quite an overhaul as explained earlier. Clear concise instructions you have displayed on here! I know it takes a lot of time and hard work with both working on the car and editing the video so thank you very much! For the Algo! 👨🏻‍🔧

I wish I had your confidence levels. For me taking off the slightly small thing off in the engineer bay gives me anxiety. LOL. I replaced the boot wiring on my E90 for my last project which BMW wanted £280! Cost me £8 with some wire from Halfords and some crimps!

Much Respect George, glad I’ve came across your video cause I’ve just purchased an 04 E65 745Li with this same issue; also after finding out from the BMW service cntr it was going to run me about US$2500 😳 I found a local mechanic for around US$850 So I’m looking to do it myself as well hopefully when I have the time lol.
    Cheers!

Great vid... maybe an idea for a vid on the BM's you have had with the common problems encountered during ownership on each one?.. then maybe links to your remedies in the description? More of a "go to" vid for us viewers who own that particular car? Particularly interested in the 5 series..:). great vids though as always 👍

also, how many o rings does the oil cooler thermostat need? it looked like 2

I noticed you were able to do this job with out taking out the motor mount and hoisting the engine. All other videos say to do that. Did you have any issuse with it. Im wondering if it is because you have the 760 ?

I'd recommend a COOLING SYSTEM UPGRADE. A N63INTAKE 80 CELSIUS DEGREE THERMOSTAT. A BMW 1.4 PSI BAR COOLANT TANK CAP. RUN A BMW COOLANT MIXTURE OF 70 TO 30. AND A VTT OIL BREATHER CAP. sorry for the capital letters I just copy and paste lol.

For the N62 you have to remove an engine mount bracket so will need to support the engine somehow

My mechanic said the motor mounts need to be released and the engine jacked up a few inches....i have a 06' 750 li and i dont believe what he said....surely the job would be the same on a 750....should be even more room without the extra cylinders on a 760. If you happen to know if it can be done the same way on a 750 let me know! It would save me alot of money and tbh id rather do it myself that way it gets done right!

@@GeorgeAusters ended up doing the alt bracket job myself by dropping subframe lifting engine a few inches, i got it all apart but i cant find torque specs for the bolts that hold the bracket to the side of the block....surely they would be the same as the motor mount bracket? If you happen to know what the torque specs are id really appreciate it cause i cannot find them anywhere online not even on TIS (my cars 06 750li with oil cooler normal alternator)

Do you have to remove the alternator bracket/housing on the N73 or could you have just removed the alternator from the housing it sits in? I am about to do mine and BMW wants $2500, but I would like the extra things done such as housing seal and coolant tube. Not sure if they would be removing the housing or not. Do you know?

    • @GeorgeAusters

@@GeorgeAusters Thanks…my alternator just failed and smoked the belt so I presume it locked up. I parked car in the store I was near and have to have it towed. BMW quoted $2200 to change alternator and I asked if they will be removing the bracket as I want the seal, tube and Orings changed. They said that would be additional as they only need to remove the alternator. Wondering if I need to roll up my sleeves and do it myself. I’ve had the 760 for 17 years and am comfortable with figuring it out…but strapped on time and it’s winter. Was wondering if big difference to change bracket vs removing just the alternator.
