For anyone who has a Model #HRR2169VKA like mine, which was bought at Home Depot in May, 2013: There are six(6) bolts holding the shroud on, and the upper one in the back takes a 6mm Allen wrench, not a T40 Torx as shown in this video. Removing the shroud is somewhat of a challenge, at least the first time. I took off the blades b/c I didn't know any better, but now recommend it.
I took off all six bolts and still couldn't get the shroud out. This is a piece of shit design. I've had quite a few problems with the automatic drive so I just don't use it anymore.
Hi Albury, I have the HRR216VKUA which is probably the latest model to yours. It cuts and mulch’s the grass, and hence the back door appears to be attached to the shroud, and I cannot see where to remove the screws. I have six of the screws out, including the one held in by the hex screw, but it still won’t come out. Any suggestions? Regards Kate
Hi Albury, I suspect our machines are very similar. I have the HRR216VKUA model. I’m having difficulty changing the drive belt. While the Engine belt guard appears much the same as in this video, this isn’t true of the Transmission belt. There is no discernible way of getting the drive belt off the transmission. It has a central bolt, on which there is a nut, but when you turn it the whole thing rotates, and you cannot remove the nut. Can I ask how you did it. Regards Kate
I own a HRR2169VKA that’s probably 10 years old and this video was a 95% exact match to the process on my mower. The only different is the guard doesn’t just pop out because it’s connected to the mulch/bag flap panel. I snapped mine removing the guard. I drove a screw back in later to hold in place. Otherwise, much easier than other Honds models! However, it turns out that tightening up the nut to increase tension on the transmission was the real solution to getting my mower rolling again!
The bolt at 1:13 is the right wheel. I found it easier to unscrew this bolt before laying the mower on its right side. Also, you can rotate the height adjustment handle for each wheel way to the rear so the wheel doesn't block access to the bolt. So you can use a ratchet wrench with an extension instead of a combination wrench.
Replacing the belt on my HRR216k9VLA was similar to the video with a few significant differences. It appears that each model has a different configuration so be prepared for a few surprises. In addition to removing the six bolts on the shroud, I had to remove the clip director mechanism (2 bolts & 1 Philips screw). There were no bolts holding the transmission belt guard, so I had to remove the pulley. First you have to disconnect the end of the tensioning cable which will allow you to rotate the transmission/pulley mechanism. Next, hold the rectangular end of the pulley shaft with a crescent wrench to keep the pulley from rotating while you use an open end 10 mm wrench to loosen the pulley nut. The split pulley sides will open up and allow the belt to slip off. There is a retaining nut on the torx screw which I forgot about until after I had installed the other 5 bolts. The shroud appears to be solid without the torx screw, so I didn't bother to start over. Thanks to a couple of other commenters that got me on the right track of having to remove the pulley in order to remove the belt - I was close to taking it to the shop before I read those comments.
Thank you so very much for your post James. My HRR216VKUA must be very similar to yours because mine too doesn’t have a Transmission belt drive, and I couldn’t see a way of removing it either. Your handy hints have helped me a lot, and I now I feel confident to proceed. I was also thinking about taking it to the repair shop too. Regards Kate
I’ve uploaded 4 videos of how to do this for a later model if this lawnmower. Mine is the HRR216VKUA. This would bit have been possible without your comment James. So, thank you very much
My Honda mower also required taking apart the pulley. I gave the tensioning cable more slack with the screw adjustment so I could disconnect it easily, exposing the pulley. Next sprayed some liquid wrench on the nut, waited a bit, then used a medium sized cresent wrench on the shaft end and a racheting box end wrench on the nut. Also used a allen wrench on the top shroud fastener (5.5 or 6 mm). That cilp is really the only one you have to attach to the shroud with a bit of glue or whatever during reassembly becasue the rest of the clips are easy to position with the shroud in place.

For anyone that has a mulcher, you have to remove this to get the shroud off. The shroud has a Spindle which is part of the shroud. It goes up through the hole in the frame, on to which the mulcher mechanism sits. Two bolts, and one screw need to be removed to remove the cover. Both bolts have loose nuts, and one is longer than the other. Take care when removing the shroud because I suspect that the spindle will not take kindly to being caught on the metal frame when taken out.
Hi. My propeller isn't working, when I lift it on the 2 front wheels the left back wheel moves a little bit when I hold the bar down but soon as i put it back on ground it stops but doesn't pull. Any suggestions? The thin bar that runs along the back wheels is that meant to turn as the mower drives?
Sounds like the drive belt is stretched out and the trasmission will not engage. You can try adjusting the cable to the transmission, which will take up some of the slack in the drive belt. If that isn't enough you have to replace the drive belt.
Bought my mower at Honda Home Depot. The belt guard by the trans was built onto it. Had to pry it up to get the old belt off and the new one one. If it ever goes bad again...I'm buying a new damn mower.
This is a very common belt design which is horrible because the belt is basically loose and it tends to slip a lot but it "works". I wish they would add an adjustable belt tensioner to this design. Some older lawn mowers has it but it's rare.
Yep… I dropped to by to see if there was a tension adjustment as mine is beginning to squeak .. about 7 years old… ah well… it runs good and the drive works… guess I’ll order a new belt.. and what’s with the tires? To all those with the HRR216VKUA, I’ve uploaded videos of how to remove the Transmission Belt Guard. You have to rotate the whole mechanism anticlockwise. See my channel

Why I didn't replace that one first is anyone's guess, but after I tried for an hour, I said to hell with it. Shroud held on by other bolts, and yes, absolute SHIT design.
Any design engineer `That has been on the tools` knows that the two captive nuts on the side fixings are a SH*! idea. AND why put 1x T40 torx bolt in. They just have to do it don't they.
I was able to remove that bolt when I discovered what was holding on to it using a mirror. Knowing that the other end of this bolt has both rust & dirt to deal with I unbolted it like a stuck bolt on a car. You try to loosen it to about 1/8" then tighten, then loosen then tighten and before you know it you're loosening the bolt more than tightening it and then its out. It's all just clearing the gunk out of the way of the threads by going back n forth. The captive nut has nothing to do with the difficulty. It's rust and dirt that is the culprit. And any design engineer would know how to remove the bolt using captive nuts.
Note that some of these procedures don't apply or are not relevant for the Honda mower model# HRX217HYA with the gray NeXite plastic (lifetime) deck. The mounting connections for the belt cover (underneath the deck) are completely different & without being able to remove that, it appears that you'll have to pull the engine assembly off the deck to access the belt from above. Perhaps you could demonstrate the procedure for replacing the belt for Honda mowers with that type of deck, if there's an easier method?
@@kateryder530 do those later models you mention have the same NeXite deck as the model I mentioned above? I did manage to access the belt, but only after removing the engine mounting bolts to the deck & lifting it off.

As always good vids on brand new machines and this does aid in seeing the process more clearly however it will likely be more difficult on old dirty possibly rusting ones. After watching this process upgrading to Honda’s HRX model with the hydro transmission may be well worth it, if you can afford it.
I had a shuddering coming from my mower's wheels and transmission when the drive was engaged and I figured the belt was just old and needed to be replaced. Turns out the sleeve and dust cap on the rear axle had come out of place and the axle was moving around. Moved it back in place and everything normal.
When you have adjusted out most of the adjustment cable and the paddle won’t engage the drive any more, either your cable is broke/worn out or your belt is worn out too much. My belt broke, so it was easy to diagnose when it just up and stopped propelling.
Good question. We just bought this same model and have only used it 4 times and now all of a sudden the belt slips bad. It doesn't seem right that the belt needs to be replaced already.
@@johnhernandez3134 I had the same problem. I already replaced the belt once and that one already wore out. I just cut the belt off and don't use the automatic drive.
My mower doesn't have a removable transmission belt guard (2:04). I had to use vice grips on the guard and bend it out of the way enough to swap the drive belt.
+david nicholls You probably need to adjust the cable controlling the belt tension, which is a lot easier than getting that damn shroud off and putting on a new belt. Directions for your model are most likely here: powerequipment.honda.com/lawn-mowers/maintenance-and-support

I also had the same issue. I decided to just gently bend the belt guard just enough to squeeze the belt out from between the guard and the pulley. I'm guessing the correct way would be to remove the nut on the pulley and take it off, but what a pain in the ass that would be considering you would have to find a way to keep the pulley from turning to loosen the nut. Bad design IMO.
@@brian4693 You bet it's a bad design! I've already replaced the belt once and I'm not doing it again. I cut the belt off and decided to push the mower.
No! GCV160 is an engine model. The drive belt is depended on the model of the lawn mower. HRT216TDA, HRB215, HRR217's are Honda lawn mower models which use the GCV160 engines.
After removing the six shroud bolts on my mower, I then removed the door positioning mechanism by removing two small bolts. This allowed me to remove the door and door shaft that was preventing the shroud from being removed. Then all I had to do was tug, pull, pry, jiggle and cuss out the shroud.
@@kateryder530 I first removed what they call the Clip Director (the mechanism to move the door from mulch to bag). Then I was able to pull out the door which includes the rotation rod that is in the shroud. After the rod is out, you should be able to wiggle/jiggle the shroud out (assuming that you have removed the 6 attaching screws).
I am trying to replace the belt on an HRR216K9VKAA. Instructions are pretty good until I try and remove the belt guard on the transmission pulley. Belt guard is different and it impossible to remove without removing the pulley itself. Can't lock the pully so can't replace the drive belt. Poor design. Replacing the drive belt should not be that difficult.
I can't believe how difficult this was. Trying to dismantle the guards was a nightmare. The guard at the clutch end was not retained by two screws. The lock nut holding the pulley had to be completely removed before the belt. could be removed. Every step had to be carefully thought out. Very poor design. I still have not replaced the blades because the nuts are are so seized. I have to wait until I have a whole day to do that I suppose.
This is not a good tutorial. The "clip director" mechanism is attached to the shroud on one end and handling it during the repair is an item that requires some explanation. Also, the hex bolt in the back - the retaining nut is a major pain in the neck as it simply falls out when you detach the shroud, and there is no reasonable way to put it back in place for reassembly.
I glued my retaining bolt at the back in the shroud before reinserting the shroud in the frame after reading your comment. Can’t think why it was ever loose in the first place. Thank you

I had a shuddering coming from my mower's wheels and transmission when the drive was engaged and I figured the belt was just old and needed to be replaced. Turns out the sleeve and dust cap on the rear axle had come out of place and the axle was moving around. Moved it back in place and everything normal.
Do they make Kevlar belts??? Part # for v belt for hrn216vkaa 22431-vr8-no3
My goodness he makes this look so easy. Heh heh 😉 putting the shroud back on is tricky.
My HRR216K9VKAA did not have the 2 belt guard bolts at the trans.Everything was EZ until that point.Had to take it to a repair shop.
Yeah you have to take the pulley apart. See comments above.
I wonder if this works on a mower that has ever cut grass.
I need the belt part number
I wish I could find one of these HRR in this condition. 😂
How do I know when I need to replace the mower "drive belt?"
When you have adjusted out most of the adjustment cable and the paddle won’t engage the drive any more, either your cable is broke/worn out or your belt is worn out too much. My belt broke, so it was easy to diagnose when it just up and stopped propelling.
How does the belt tension? That looks very loose... seems like it will just slip
The transmission rotates. There is an adjustment link in the cable you use to tension the belt.
@@markflierl1624 I ended up giving it a good clean and found a different video o. How to set the tension. and it worked wonderfully
John Hernandez link please
My mower doesn't have a removable transmission belt guard (2:04). I had to use vice grips on the guard and bend it out of the way enough to swap the drive belt.
Pulley has to be taken apart; it's two pieces.
Next time ill pay the dealer to replace the belt! The retainer nut behind the wheel kicked my donkey along with mostly everything else.
Ive replaced this belt but still very little drive from the wheels ,,any ideas ?
+david nicholls You probably need to adjust the cable controlling the belt tension, which is a lot easier than getting that damn shroud off and putting on a new belt. Directions for your model are most likely here:

David - you saved me half-a-day's worth of work. The maker of this video should spend 10 seconds saying 'first adjust the self-propel to see if that helps'.
@@dr.energysavercincinnati1706 Yah! That would be a lot more helpful than telling us to remove the spark plug wire. I've yet to see a lawnmower start itself!
Albury Smith this comment for the win! Thank you, it seems obvious but I hadn’t solved it. Thing flies now ;)
Mark Flierl it’s a 2 second thing. Never skip this when working under the deck period.
The rear adjustable height wheels will swing completely out of the way. No need to work behind the wheel.
Thanks for the clear demonstration! All, please remember to wear protective gloves when working around the mower blade and the mower undercarriage.
The belt looked very loose after replacement, is that normal?
Drive belt tension adjustment. I haven't tried it yet, but will be doing it today.

Does anyone know what the gear oil is in size the transmission on this mower....?
I bought my mower in 2017 and it is exactly the same as this one, except the transmission belt guard is different. I cannot, for the life of me, figure out how to remove it. It looks to me that the bolts to remove it are underneath the pulley. I can't mow my grass until I replace the belt. Somebody please help! Model is HRR216K9VLAA
Have the same problem as Greg.. see no way to remove the pulley belt guard bolts on my model HRR216VYUA.
Sure would appreciate some help/advice on this, thanks in anticipation of any help. VG
Im having the same issue. Did you ever figure it out?
I also had the same issue. I decided to just gently bend the belt guard just enough to squeeze the belt out from between the guard and the pulley. I'm guessing the correct way would be to remove the nut on the pulley and take it off, but what a pain in the ass that would be considering you would have to find a way to keep the pulley from turning to loosen the nut. Bad design IMO.
Take a pair of pliers and lock down on the pulley. Grab a deep 14mm and bam the belt is free
@@brian4693 You bet it's a bad design! I've already replaced the belt once and I'm not doing it again. I cut the belt off and decided to push the mower.
Does (part #22431-VL0-P01) fir my Honda mower Model HR821648DA?
Where can I locate the carburetor drain bolt on a Honda lawn mower HRR2162SDA?

Good job. Thanks!
I took off all the botes on the shroud, and in the deflector shoot, but the shroud is stuck on. Any suggestions?
You probably have it working by now but I had to take off the deflector adjustment mechanism to get the shroud out.
Great, thanks
What is happening starting at 4:05. What is the tool and what is it connecting?
We are using a magnet tool to secure the nut that secures the shroud up inside the mower deck. Thanks!
I looked at mine I think I can take off the blade and feed the belt into the shroud without actually removing the shroud and all the attachment bolts.
Maybe not if mine has a belt guard I probably have to take the shroud off to get to it.
Husqvarna mower rear wheel drive how to change drive belt.
+RepairClinic.com What's the total bolt count holding the shroud? It would be somewhat helpful to know before trying to wrestle it off.
Will this fit Honda GCV160?
No! GCV160 is an engine model. The drive belt is depended on the model of the lawn mower.
HRT216TDA, HRB215, HRR217's are Honda lawn mower models which use the GCV160 engines.
Well done! Thank you.
My machine is a mulched, so the door is attached to the shroud.
After removing the six shroud bolts on my mower, I then removed the door positioning mechanism by removing two small bolts. This allowed me to remove the door and door shaft that was preventing the shroud from being removed. Then all I had to do was tug, pull, pry, jiggle and cuss out the shroud.
@@jimguidetti2814 Does the door mechanism come out as part of the shroud?
@@kateryder530 I first removed what they call the Clip Director (the mechanism to move the door from mulch to bag). Then I was able to pull out the door which includes the rotation rod that is in the shroud. After the rod is out, you should be able to wiggle/jiggle the shroud out (assuming that you have removed the 6 attaching screws).
@@jimguidetti2814 Hi James, Thanks for getting back to me. Does the hatch need to be open or shut, or does it not matter? Regards Kate
@@kateryder530 If I remember correctly, I think I wiggled it out when it was partially open.
Same with mine, what a waste of time, and now expense as I can't get the belt off.
Did you ever figure out how to take the pulley off?
Such a poor design. All this just to change a belt. Why dont they add a top access panel like Toro does on the super recycler?
your belt is loose.
Where the fuck are the bolts that hold the transmission guard on a hrr216k9vkaa? As you can tell it is driving me nuts!
If your mower isn't propelling, try this and see if you can turn a 4 hour job into 5 minutes: ruclips.net/video/B8vil1lhkQE/видео.html

Not particularly good design.
Change your cars serpentine belts. This is nothing.
@@breeze787 I let my friend replaced the serpentine belts for $40 labor.
Thank you
@@kateryder530 yeah, I taped it with duct tape
