Restoring an Abandoned Mechanical Keyboard for my Gaming Setup! (IBM Model M)

  • In this video I completely restore and bolt mod an abandoned IBM Model M that has been sitting since 1994 in an abandoned mental asylum that was repurposed into a data center in the late 1980s. After 4 months of using this keyboard, I have to say that the hype is real. This really is one of the best feeling keyboards out there and is a joy to type on. Glad I saved it, otherwise it would've either been destroyed when they take the building down or destroyed by vandals.

    Also, yes im aware model m uses a membrane to register the keys. Majority of people accept buckling sping keyboards as mechanical.

    DUDE! this video is my savior :) I had an old IBM Model M in my dads attic piling up dust for who know how long. I later found out that he had worked in IT for 20 years back in the 80's with a guy name Tom Gore. He told me I could have the keyboard and so now I'm here wanting to refurbish this old thing but not knowing how. I decided to search the internet for answers but with no results. So after 3 years I decided to come back to this project and to my surprise, stumbled upon this video. I am currently working on the project and will hopefully get it finished this time. Great video btw keep up the great content!

      The Model M is membrane, yeah. They designed a lot of their own internal switch mechanisms in the 70s and 80s. Capacitive buckling spring and beamspring boards use capacitive contacts on PCBs.
      There are no strings in a Model M.

    If you don't have the right socket for those deep case nuts, you can take the barrel of a Bic pen, soften the end with the flame of a Bic lighter, then push it into the hole against the nut and the plastic will mold itself to the shape of the nut as it cools. You can then use it like a makeshift screwdriver to deal with those nuts.

    I'm surprised that you were able to get it back in the shell after doing a bolt mod with the nuts under the steel plate. I modded my circa 1992 PS/2 Model M a couple years ago and had to use very flat head screws and run them up from below with the nuts on top of the plastic deck. Otherwise I didn't have enough clearance with the bottom row of nuts and the steel sheet wouldn't fully seat in the shell. I wonder if there was a manufacturing revision somewhere along the line that slimmed it down a bit?

      I used the toilet suff because it was the strongest stuff i had that wouldnt damage the plastic. Also, its not water proof but wouldnt hurt it in most cases. Ive also washed a Corsair board and a few other no brand ones in the water. You have to dry them good. If keys stop working you put 99% rubbing alcohol in the mechanical switch and spam the button till it works (for mechanical boards, idk about rubber dome ones). Try at ur own risk lol.

      I bought this cable: www.pckeyboard.com/page/product/1395113 It's an AT cable, so you'll need a AT to PS/2 or USB adapter to use it on a modern PC.

    8:12 PS/2 is NOT hot swappable. There is a chance you could damage the port and keyboard (especially on older computers) by plugging it in/out when the system is powered up.
    Make sure to power it down next time. The only reason you did not immediately kill this port was because newer motherboards have internal breakers that somewhat protect it from damage.

    • @Shyzah
      @Shyzah  3 года назад +1

      Oh, didn't know that. Does that apply to the Model M or all PS/2 devices?
      I've never ran across as ps/2 device that I could hotswap except for the Model M that seems to work without restarting the computer.
      Even on the newer PCs, I have to power it off when plugging a ps/2 mouse or keyboard.

      I lubed a few keys but it's not the same as lubing a regular mechanical keyboard. It actually makes this one worse. It just feels a bit mushy. Gets rid of that clunky feeling.
