no it really is improvisation, what they agreed to is the scale theyre playing in and that one plays chord progressions and other the melody, but it is improvised :D
because theyre playing harmonic jazz scales and theyre playing both at the same time.. im playing piano for 6 years and i know some stuff, i can improvise but not jazz improvise because it is really another level..
because for them it is easier to improvise, rather than to fin a piece for two and try to learn it and then try several takes to paly it at the same rythm and tempo, and if you play piano you can really notice when it is improvisation..

Well he is also playing the chord progression, which makes it easier not to look at the piano than having to improvise a solo over it which is what Rudy was doing.
Charlie is just doing a regular chord progression. Rudy was playing the lead. Thats why. Lead are individual melodies like a singing voice which can go all over the keys. Thats why Rudy is watching the fingering because it is different every single bar and measure.
It doesnt matter what the face expression say some people play he hardest lead with a completely amused face others like rudy might express the easiest thing into face expressions for me ive always had a straight face while playing no matter what chords so yea
