The thing I like about Charlie PUTH is that he's unapologetic about having learnt music academically. Most musicians in the mainstream act as though they were all self-taught and I get that it's a better look, makes you seem like an absolute prodigy but realistically... I mean Jacob COLLIER literally claims to be self-taught... So does Lady GAGA, Bruno MARS, and the list goes on.
Le Rigoureux Jacob Collier grew up with a family that’s heavily in music academically and otherwise, his mother is a music teacher. So he grew up with it “organically”, because he didn’t actively choose to study music, it’s just there. Kinda like how someone might have to Academically learn English vs native speaker.
Everybody is self taught with varying degrees of support, direction, and tuition. We are all radically different, and subsequently learn and understand concepts in very different way. Nobody is self taught.
Jessica Stewart, Ok wait, My 7th grade ELA teachers name is Jessica Stewart. That would be crazy if we just happened to stumble on the same comment on the same video.
God damn. This brings me back to college theory. I was the only one to study jazz on top of classical theory and I’d sneak into the choir room after hours because they had a fully restored steinway grand that I’d practice on. I’d play for hours finding chords and making music. I miss it.
That could have been me making that comment. Dont let it slip out of your life. You don't have to miss it. Close your eyes and your there again. A simple exercise in remembering the past can end up being a journey back in time. With enough practice you will find yourself able to do it at will. Music and fragrances trigger my crazy time warps... I feel the bench I'm sitting on. Then I feel the actuation of the keys. I hear the chord progressions, then suddenly I smell the piano and the room around me. It all seems like its real. I swear Its like time jumping. Try it. Don't be scared...happiness and a piano are just a thought away. Sounds crazy but it works for me.
I recognized Emily immediately! As a trombonist I’m a huge Carl Fontana fan and I love listening to old recordings of him. I’ve done a couple tributes to him and played arrangements of Emily that he did
Most of people who's trying to learn music theory is sick of trying. It makes no sense until all those letters and numbers are translated into music itself. But while watching this dude, learning music theory is alot more interesting. Furthermore, you can find what you missed in music theory and learn it. Even if you're not educated in music theory(which is totally fine) can find this kind of things pretty amusing because music is such a mysterious thing and this guy is explaining it.
Charles, you probably won’t end up reading this, however, the direction of your channel is amazing right now. I love the pertinence to sort of “mainstream” culture while still incorporating educational info and chord talk 🥺 This type of video makes me want to practice. Thank you
Anyone can make beats since it’s easily accessible and since there’s a lot of tutorials out there nowadays, but it takes serious SKILLS to do what Charlie does, especially his piano playing. Dude is so good at what he does that it becomes second nature to him. He doesn’t even have to think hard about it. That’s the kind of level you want to be at if you want to be good at something. And all it requires is real dedication, patience, and hard/smart work.

Also like that moment from Bleach, where their power levels were so far apart, he couldn't even sense his enemy anymore?
Yeah. That's how high. ☝😅
@@ShovelChef oh man, seeing a musician's skill metaphorically as their spirit level/reiatsu just seems so funny but accurate to me lmfaooo
D' Angelo's song, 12.50, has so much Soul, you see Puth feeling it.
I love how much joy he gets from breaking down like 30 seconds of jazz
The Beatles were self taught
Wait. When did Gaga claim to be self-taught?

I think that I'm wrong about this one because I can't find the piece again.
I apologise.
The song around 14:30 is "How does it feel" from D'Angelo. The voicings in the original track are good, too.
12:50 is D’Angelo - Untitled (how does it feel) if anyone wants the source :)
"A little rough"...
Dude just improvised an arrangement while sight-reading.
I FELL INLOVE RIGHT HERE : 9:16
and also here 10:45
Me: *plays in high school jazz band*
Charlie: *Pathetic.*
Never! He would tell you to keep it up! :D
Jessica Stewart he said Charlie not Charles 😂
@@nai978 oof, well the sentiment still stands lol.
Jessica Stewart, Ok wait, My 7th grade ELA teachers name is Jessica Stewart. That would be crazy if we just happened to stumble on the same comment on the same video.
@@turnernorman4798 lmao hopefully it's ur teacher, but those names are fairly common right lol
I don’t care if it gets dislikes in the future, right now this video has 463 likes and 0 dislikes. This is such a supportive fan base I love it.
1:18 MC - Really nice chord progression paired with bass and groovy drums track
Yeah what is that jam? It's smooooooove
yeah what’s the song name
"Hear the five one?"
No Charles I hear music
🤣🤣 same
Charles: You can just skip to 12:45 if you wanna hear the next commentary
Me: NO I WANNA HEAR SOME JAZZ
I LIKE JAZZ
Exactly I didn’t skip!!
DO U LIKE ..JAZZ ?!?!
6:43 shot me back into the Debussy obsessed phase of my life. And im here for it.
For those of you who skipped to 12:45. Go back and listen to the whole thing

God damn. This brings me back to college theory. I was the only one to study jazz on top of classical theory and I’d sneak into the choir room after hours because they had a fully restored steinway grand that I’d practice on. I’d play for hours finding chords and making music. I miss it.
Which college did you go to? I'm planning to go to Berklee
That sounds beautiful man I hope that to be me someday in college living the life👍
That could have been me making that comment.
I read this comment with Charles playing that beautiful song on the background and it made me miss it too lol
@@Nairrrrrrr don't go to Berklee overpriced
I recognized Emily immediately! As a trombonist I’m a huge Carl Fontana fan and I love listening to old recordings of him. I’ve done a couple tributes to him and played arrangements of Emily that he did
who else knows like nothing about all this music nerd stuff, but still watched the whole 16 minutes and 52 seconds?
yes
I am liking this before halfway thru the vid cuz I am definitely gonna finish it
Dope
I am here just for the great jazz tunes
Most of people who's trying to learn music theory is sick of trying. It makes no sense until all those letters and numbers are translated into music itself. But while watching this dude, learning music theory is alot more interesting. Furthermore, you can find what you missed in music theory and learn it. Even if you're not educated in music theory(which is totally fine) can find this kind of things pretty amusing because music is such a mysterious thing and this guy is explaining it.
Charles: You can skip ahead to this timestamp if you want.

I know I'm way behind, but the tune @12:50 is Charlie jamming on Untitled (How Does It Feel) by D'Angelo. Fantastic song.
Last progression sounds like “how does it feel,” by D’Angelo.
YES SIR From One of the best albums ever "voodoo"
That's what I was thinking. I'm learning to play it on guitar... Untitled (How Does it Feel).
It definitely is. It's the same melody.
It is 😊
That's exactly what it was
Hey just FYI. That last song charlie was organ soloing over was D'Angelo's song 'How does It Feel" those were his chords.
Housemusic Pro that’s exactly what I was hearing too! Nice ear! @Charles, take a listen: ruclips.net/video/-7hbqxnhzU8/видео.html
Third to this, good catch. (good record too)
Yes! I knew it sounded familiar
Charles: "A little rough, but you get the idea"
Me: Dies inside.
Charles, you probably won’t end up reading this, however, the direction of your channel is amazing right now. I love the pertinence to sort of “mainstream” culture while still incorporating educational info and chord talk 🥺
This type of video makes me want to practice. Thank you
I'm only a few minutes in but I don't think I've seen Charles this excited for a video before
Anyone can make beats since it’s easily accessible and since there’s a lot of tutorials out there nowadays, but it takes serious SKILLS to do what Charlie does, especially his piano playing. Dude is so good at what he does that it becomes second nature to him. He doesn’t even have to think hard about it. That’s the kind of level you want to be at if you want to be good at something. And all it requires is real dedication, patience, and hard/smart work.
This is when you finished learning one technique and you start using it everywhere in your pieces
ii-V to the IV ftw
D’angelo “How does it feel” is the last song he played. You would literally destroy this song with your own rendition of it!!! Ur amazing and love all your video!!!
He made a beat on his tiktok with this exact chord progression called stress me out, check that out :)
Dude, i love when you just let yourself be with a certain topic. Keep it up, love your videos.
This comment section confused me for a second with Charles and Charlie.
🎶 I want, I want, Charles in Charge of me!
Charlie’s playing Untitled (How Does It Feel) by D’Angelo at 12:50 in case anybody was wondering.
I don’t even play the piano but I have never skipped one of this guy’s vids xD
12:45 The track he is playing over is Untitled (How Does It Feel) - D'Angelo, it has such amazing instrumental.
Funny you put that disclaimer 😂 I was about to post this is in “D”
“hear the five - one there?”
no but ok i believe you
Lmao
Perfect Cadence
isn’t that the guy that has perfect pitch????? wow
Yep

I know one of the musicians that plays for him and he openly admits that Charlie Puth is actually better than him on the keys haha
I would pay money just to listen to Charles improv whatever he wanted for a solid hour straight.
