Thank you for doing this. For speaking up. Like Dr. Augustine said, "True healing comes from getting uncomfortable." My prayer is that our Church dives deep deep into the uncomfortable.
I remember the first time stepped in a Black Catholic church. I walked in and saw a statue of St. Peter Claver and a portrait of the Black Madonna. As a black man I was amazed. I didn't know about Black Catholic and grew up Pentecostal. I recognize all of the songs outside of the Mass parts. But nothing could prepare me for all of the "amens" and "hallelujahs" coming from the pews during the homily. I joined the Church the next year.
I absolutely love this! I live in NC, where it feels so rare to see other Black Catholics. This is a beautiful representation of our culture and the Church. It makes me want to visit NOLA even more.
Yes I think on some level it’s why I left. So often I felt out of place. I can recall visiting ministries and being the only POC and it was so so uncomfortable.
@@Powerranger-le4up Aww thank you. I’m still thinking about it honestly. For me right now, it truly is about finding like minded people and a good church home. I’m in a small town and my church is here from my youth. Yet the dynamic of that church has changed drastically over the years while I was out of state. Many of the people I knew there are no longer there and a whole new group of people. So it doesn’t feel familiar any longer.
Every time I get an opportunity to see Dr. Augustine speak, I take advantage of it. There are some awesome leaders of our Church who are Black, and I am grateful that this moment in history provides us the opportunity to point to their leadership and listen closely to their voices. May we be the Body of Christ. Thank you, Spirit Juice.
It is a trying time in the world today, but your comment is very encouraging and nice to receive ! Thank you Angela, God Bless and we hope it's a great week for you
Ansel, As usual, you help us see the truth through the Truth. May God continue to bless your ministry with grace and strength. You are an inspiration to many and a beacon of hope to all. I am recommending this documentary to my Racial Harmony group and will show my high school students, as well. Thank you.
Excellent documentary. Thank you for sharing this story. This is a much needed resource in our Catholic community. I stand with my Black Catholic family.
I'm also a Black Catholic. I grew up in a parish with 3 black families. But, we were treated equal, as far as I was concerned. However, as a young man, I went to the Black Catholic Congress. How powerful!!! I'll never forget it. That was about 40yrs ago.
Seeing a black Catholic Church is so interesting to me. I grew up in a Baptist/non denominational churches in Canada in a very multicultural church . I’d never seen any black catholics until I reached well into my adulthood and knowing that it is possible makes my heart swell. Travelling around the world allowed me to see how diverse the Catholic Church is. Going to Australia showed me how accepting their churches were versus the experiences I had in my childhood in a progressive city. Thank you for sharing this with the world. I would love to experience a service at a black Catholic Church because it fits me culturally with the hymns AND I would get to experience the rich traditions. Maybe I’ll make it to NOLA someday.
Tiffany Martin 5:51 - all Black Catholics feel you. While visiting other parishes, we've endured the stares, the people sliding down the pews, or that awkward Sign of the Peace moment. Yet we stay because it's our Church too.
Ah my heart, thank you for this. I cant lie, I am angry about the school being shut down - please let us know if there is anything we can do to help? God with us man
I only recently started learning about African American Catholics in 2020. I was looking for a way to respond to the sins of racism without violating my Catholic faith. Because I’m a white guy and didn’t really see a lot of African Americans in my community, I basically had to start from scratch. I ended up learning about six different African American Saints, but it was the story of Venerable Augustus Tolton that affected me the most. He went through so much to become a priest, but was able to live a holy life. I’ve since learned more about African American Catholic culture and have watched a couple of Masses via Facebook. I will admit that the way the Mass is conducted is a little different from what I’m used to, but I like it. I feel bad for how my African American brothers and sisters are being treated. I will do my best by praying for them.
Love the soulful music and flavors of the food. I bet celebration is just as colorful and deep. Sometimes I think the catholic church missed an opportunity in america. Especially in this part of america.
How sad that racism still exists but most troubling in the Catholic Church. We are all made in the image and likeness of God! We are the body of Christ. ✝
I’m definitely sorry to hear and see this divide. I hate seeing the way there’s class and ethnic prejudices. The cool thing is that when the church is actually being the church, it’s one place the issue doesn’t doesn’t exist. As a “white” guy, one of my brothers of a another ethnicity once said, he hated all the talk about racism, because the truth is, there’s only one race. The human race. I look forward to Gods kingdom where people won’t make a problem out of skin culture and arbitrary cultural customs.
I cried for a little bit of everything! I grew up on the west side of Indianapolis. Called Haughville. I got my first vaccines at Christamore House. My reading touter teacher in 3rd grade was teaching a 1st generation on father’s side, and lot’s of generations on my mother’s side. Latino American kid. At St. Anthony’s, known back when in school as All Saint’s. My life was black and white. And brown at home. In reality we all have Black American life in us. I love this video. Hope to see more. Especially the Catholic Church songs!! The Catholic Church isn’t perfect because we are sinners. But it is Holy because of Our Lord Jesus!!! It would be nice to see members of the choir on EWTN daily mass. God bless y’all. Viva Cristo Rey!!! 07/02/20.
I ask your forgiveness for the injustices you endured because of skin color. We are all children of God, loved into existence, and worthy of our Lotd’s salvation. Let us all strive for unity as members of Christ’s body. God bless.
We are all God's children. And God has no color. Being marginalized is often base on color as well as economy. We should have images which reflect who we are ( I've never seen a blue-eyed Jesus, honest). See video by Father Joshua Johnson. The discussion of education was in error...first African American school was started by St Katharine Drexel...a rich white lady who used her means to open schools...the Catholic faith is rich. God bless.
No more victimhood. It is universal brother and sisterhood. Maybe it’s different in New Orleans. We are all in the same ship. We are all sinners praying for Salvation but we cannot carry all the sins of the past we can only create our present reality. We are Americans first.
I love this so much. This needs to be shared with literally every Catholic media network.
Thank you so much Monique ! God Bless you

Yes!! Yes!!! Let us share❤🙏💙
As a Black Catholic, this is definitely part of my personal witness to my faith.

Didn’t know Catholics still were around. I’ve only met a handful that were from the ww2 Generation. Especially with how people are nowadays
