I love being from New Orleans, but it’s a whole different experience being black and from New Orleans. So much deep rooted culture, it’s like no other ⚜️
Gullah -Geechee culture. They have so much crafts and art that is specific to their cutlure. Like palmetto flowers and sweet grass baskets and earrings and other decor. Bright Gullah paintings. Red rice, gullah gumbo with a peanut base not a cocoa base, conch stew and a lot more.
@@kekelangston4363 Wow I know a man from Africa the Sudanese people. He made his gumbo with peanut butter and I thought that was nasty. My mother's side is from Louisiana although I am allergic to seafood. But now you speak of peanut butter gumbo. So I guess the joke was on me.

Omg, in tears. I LOVE this video. Thank you. Born, Raised, and (still) Reside in New Orleans. 9th ward, downtown New Orleans. Most famous for many things, the area that was widely focused on after Katrina. I never truly left home, even after being rescued during the hurricane. My roots are here. The culture, the sound, the tradition, the heart. Music flows through our veins. But resilience is our birthright. My blood is African, Jamaican, Native American. I’m from New Orleans, Baby; not Louisiana (lol)

Your recognize the culture because it’s a port city. Rooted in African culture and spirituality. Savannah Ga and the Geechee and Gullah islands in Ga have a similar culture. Accents are similar too. ❤️

Mobile Alabama here that’s how I feel when I watch shows that try to mimic the southern drawl or southern twang, the movie Forrest Gump somewhat got it right, but other movies sound down right ridiculous trying to mimic southern dialect I’m 2 hrs away I’ll admit coming to orleans since I was a kid and being there millions of time y’all dialect is different from your typical Southern dialect its unique and New Orleans is the only place in the south that doesn’t talk like the rest of us…y’all unique shout out to New Orleans it’s always been an on going argument between New Orleans and mobile of Mardi gras but shout out to New Orleans

Having visited New Orleans several times I really enjoyed this! It's great to see black people in a different light I hope they air this on tv as well to bring some balance and get more of our stories and perspectives heard plus I love how it was educational and still very entertaining. WELL DONE!!!
I’ve always loved New Orleans. I was enamored by the idea of their funerals were celebrations. Later, I learned enslaved Black people in New Orleans had more freedoms than other parts in the South, so they were able to keep many of their traditions. So much love to the city. Such a beautiful, resilient people.
Even before the Civil War, New Orleans had a thriving community of Freedmen-- freed slaves who were artisans & business owners. When you visit the city, look closely at the magnificent embellishments on the architecture, the big windows with the hurricane shutters, the beautiful wrought-iron balconies & fences, and the statuary & ornate above-ground crypts in the famous cemeteries. Know that strong, creative black hands made these things.

I attended an HBCU in New Orleans, and there is no place like the city. I recently returned to the city after 20 years, and it was akin to being reunited with a long lost love ❤ I look forward to returning permanently very soon. This video was a little added motivation to speed up my return. Thank you.

We need to love and respect blacks from all backgrounds because we all have out own culture depending on our region. Here on US soil we het looked down upon like we’re renegades from gangs and are uncultured. We are far from that. Im from Memphis and its different, just like where you from is unique to you. Im proud to be black regardless and shouldn’t be thought of as anything less. Met my bestie from Hurricane Katrina 16 years ago and visit her once a year. She respects Memphis like I respect New Orleans ❤️🤝

I LOVED THIS!!!! I'm from North Louisiana but I always went to New Orleans as a child and from my first experience ever since I've had an emotional attachment to the city. My attachment only grew once I went to college is South Louisiana. The city is such a culturally rich place and you can't help but to have an attachment to it and of course the people. This was great representation of the black population in New Orleans. I smiled the whole time watching it.

Facts
I went to New Orleans for undergrad and it became my second home. It’s one of the most beautiful and magical places and I love visiting.
Louisianan here. New Orleans is a Great City. However, the whole of Louisiana is so unique. If you visit New Orleans, then you should make sometime to visit some of the other cities. You will love it. Boudin, Zydeco, Cracklins, Cochon de lait, etc..So many places with amazing food, music, people, and culture. New Orleans is the biggest tourism city in Louisiana. I can take you to some other places where the grandma’s still speak that broken French and can cook up some food for you that will make you not wanted to leave. The women are beautiful, and you don’t have a clue what they’re mixed with..black, French, Indian, etc. The guys are old school generous with new school swag..but still that Southern Hospitality. Guess what in Louisiana a lot of men throw down..be careful down here. You just might fall in love, and never want to leave!

My daddy and I always say that when we watch documentaries on Louisiana. They never explore the whole state. They normally talk about NOLa, BR and occasionally Shreveport or cajun country (briefly). The history of the state is so awesome. Each area has it's own unique identity. I loved travelling throughout the state

Mobile alabama here, New Orleans the only place in the south that has a unique dialect. Shout out to New Orleans here on the gulfcoast New Orleans only 2hrs from mobile I’ve been going since I was a kid and been there millions of time I always enjoy myself and the music when I come down. I like the way New Orleans people talk with all our southern drawl and twang down here in bama we can pick out a New Orleans accent when someone from there comes to our city because it stands out in a good way tho… much love from mobile, Alabama

I’m sure all 221 who agree with you, also agree that they wouldn’t care to watch a show called, Growing Up White. Yes, I know why, and it’s the same reason why this show shouldn’t exist. Keep allowing media to continue racism and dividing the world. Like really? You’re proud you’re “black”? Why would I care if I was “White”? These are literal colors. By definition, none explain being a specific ethnicity, but people have allowed the media and other corps to keep it mainstream and relevant so racism continues. To end racism is to see beyond the person color and who they are inside, being a specific “color” has nothing to do with who you are, unless you want to believe that, continue. Change can only happen with effort.

I love this!! Keep this going. We have several rich cultures in Black America. From Mobile, Alamaba to Mullins, South Carolina to Baltimore, Maryland. We need to showcase all our different cultures in Growung Up Black in America. People put us in a box. We are more than Hip Hop! Being black in New Orleans is way different than being black anywhere else I learned that after Katrina when I was forced to live other places New Orleans has a lot of culture everywhere you turn
that part. I was 18 when Katrina happened, my freshmen year of college at Dillard. I wound up in Philly with family. It was like going to a different country and made me realize how unique New Orleans was and had me deeply homesick.
I love being from New Orleans and I love Me. Duck. The stories he's told me over the years are priceless. He's so Ol skool New Orleans. His breed is rare and almost extinct. The building that collapsed on Canal St. was once a Woolworth that this man helped integrate with the Freedom Fighters. The building was never supposed to be torned down. A living legend.

We being "Black" in New Orleans starts in Congo Square and Algiers point. Our Ancestors DNA came from The SeneGambia, The Bight of Benin, The Bight of Biafra, The Kongo and Ngola..... West and Central Africa.
The delicious foods, the polyrhymic music, the high steppping dances , the accented Dialect, the spirital religion is in that same DNA.

My family just visited New Orleans for Thanksgiving. We had to adjusted our itinerary because covid-19. My husband and I were so happy to share the rich history with our youngest son. He is 12 but he plays the piano, trumpet and breakdance. I loved him watching him watch the bands in the street. We loved the swamp tour, Mardi Gras World, and Jazz Museum. We'll make it back when the pandemic is over
In New Orleans being in the band is like being a football star. I grew up wanting to play the trumpet more than anything and preform at the games.
It's so refreshing to hear from native black New Orleans citizens who have pride of place and culture. So many videos focus on Mardi Gras, partying, drunkenness, lewd behaviour, crime, voodoo, and all the weird stuff. These people give me a much better balanced view of New Orleans life and culture.

This was well done! I love my city, and we are more than just good food and exceptional music. New Orleanians are multi Layered full of soul and the embodiment of true culture. I now reside in Dallas, Texas and even though I appreciate this city and it's surroundings it lacks culture. From an African american standpoint. Sure there are many blacks. But from a culture basis it has much to be desired. That is the mystique of The N.O. it's rich in black culture. It comes through in our passion, our cooking, our relationship, our drive. If we love you. It's for life! If we hate you. It's for life! When you are born it's a celebration! Sadly when you die. It's a celebration! There truly is only one.......New Orleans! Hey Pockee-way!

Absolutely! I just moved back home from Dallas since Hurricane Katrina 🌀 you don't know how different we are until you have to live somewhere else. I was truly culture shocked in Dallas after Katrina. It took some getting used to.

I was born/ raised in New Orleans / when I was coming up everybody looked out for each other/ each other's kids.the difference that I see is that when I was growing up / got into a fight.win or loose you shook hands /moved on / sometimes .you became best friends get n a fight nowadays / it'll be your last fght.because the guy you just beat up will go/ get a gun / kill you.now I have to give a shout-out to the people that are doing positive things in New Orleans.thats only gonna make things better for the new generation.

If they are from New Orleans, say that. But when you say Louisiana it's like we're a monolith with other cities in Louisiana and I mean no disrespect to other cities in Louisiana. We don't share the same culture as other cities in Louisiana. People love our culture and adopt parts of it in other cities, but when you come to New Orleans there is a huge difference.

*This is a fascinating & well produced documentary. As a West African born and raised in the UK, I feel a combination of respect and admiration for New Orleans and its citizens. Actually, my default setting is to respect fellow Africans wherever we are in the diaspora.
I was at work when #HurricaneKatrina happened and we stopped to watch the tragic events on TV screens in the canteen..I hope things have improved drastically since then. Have they?
Sidenote, I cannot get enough of these mellifluous accents. So rich & lovely. It complements the rich cultures, historical legacies & delicious cuisine (I have YET to visit or taste!) Shoutout to all participants/contributors*

I'll say this as a black man New Orleans is the only place where I feel you can really be free to move about how ever you want.. ONLY Orleans parish no other parish in the state of Louisiana or any other states and cities can you have that piece of mind in my opinion from my experiences

It was a blessing to be a kid in the 70’s living in the city of New Orleans, over the years and decades my city has gone through many trials, but some how New Orleans always persevere...
Lived in New Orleans for 5yrs. Before Katrina but that will always be my 2nd home Love it you leave it but it never leaves you I'm originally from a town an hour away
This video filled me with SO much joy. I'm from Donaldsonville which about an hour away. My people, my culture, my lifestyle. Louisiana is a place like NO other. Just a few months ago we were able to get most of our relatives from CA to visit New Orleans & our home town. It was an absolutely beautiful experience!!
