Hi Dawn👋. Hubby and I used to have a "media" business and I did bunches of things with photos for clients. This is what I learned. Although there certainly is a time for a lot of photos (like your great idea for Disney books for kiddos!), you are also right that you need far less than most of us have. What I saw in working with clients is although the weddings and vacations and birthdays were enjoyed, the most treasured ones often were ones that documented life. You wouldn't think that the picture of a Dad in a hospital bed after surgery would be valued but Mom was holding his hand and he was looking over at her) or a child getting their tonsils out and eating a popsicle. I had more "kids" love a picture of a simple memory with Mom... Like eating watermelon and laughing or her pushing them on the swing. Or sitting at the table sewing or reading her Bible..yelling at their brother with her hands on her hips... Or waving down to her from the end of the church pew. Whatever is unique to that person and shows relationship are the truly valued ones. Also people loved objects that were ordinary or "new" "for the time" (like now might be the Instant Pot) or even something someone loved. Like Mom putting on her favorite perfume she always smelled like or making coffee in her Keurig like she did every morning with her hair up in a towel. Anyway you get the idea. And if someway you can also briefly document that ..writing in white space in book? One thing we lose in the digital age is writing on the back of the photo. (Year/who/why). Being involved in people's photo collections made me much more selective and MUCH more aware of paying attention to our family's everyday lives. I never would have thought to take a photo of the kids with a favorite pastor or teacher or friend (a memory for them)... Or hubby sitting at our kitchen table with his cell phone tucked in his neck helping tie a child's shoes. But it's a great picture. She's laughing at something, he kinda half smiles back. But relationship/connection between them is obvious. And "kids" (adults!) Also really love pictures of their parents obviously enjoying each other and those are harder to come by if you don't have a good sister like Diana keeping her eyes open 😁. You have some great ones with just your vlog. Just my two cents of experience of what to take and keep...for what it's worth. Hugs.

Yes, those everyday photos and relationship photos were our favorites when we selected photos of Dad for his funeral. I had made a nice big scrapbook for my parents for their 40th wedding anniversary showing them as teenagers and then following their love story, which has been great to go back to. We also did a slideshow for that which included photos of us kids. My mom now has a tentative diagnosis of dementia (we go back to the doc Monday), and so my idea is to go back and put photos together into little albums like these chatbooks, except with writing in them. I know there is (or was) a service that you could actually type in what you wanted printed with the photos because my niece did it for my wedding. Alternately, with more effort, what I have done before is to edit my text right onto the photo on my computer.

Had to pop back to comment again.. I've deleted 5000 photos from my phone!! And so much anxiety and guilt lifted off me. I'm planning on printing some of the good ones that remain and making nice albums for my boys and for us to keep. Today we went walking and I didn't bring my phone, so liberating.. didn't take one single photo. Just simply enjoyed the experience with my kids
Thank you Dawn. So glad I found your channel. Our lives are becoming simpler and it is wonderful

The thought of going through my digital photos gives me anxiety. It seems like such a HUGE task! Thank you for the advice. Honestly, it's cool to have phones that take such nice pictures, but I really miss the simplicity of the "snap and develop" cameras. It was so simple. Take the pictures, wait a week or more for them to be developed and what you got was what you got. ❤️

I love how you say to take fewer photos. I think also go back and delete the one you don't like as soon as you have taken them. In that way you avoid having so many uninteresting pictures you have to go through.
We don't get books printed (I honestly don't know where I would keep them), but we make albums of our favorite pictures that rotate on our TV. We then switch them out every few months. The kids love it and we see the pictures a lot more often.

Each season, I upload our photos to Walgreens and select 10 or so of the best pictures and make a collage. It takes just a few minutes. I add the season/event and year in a text box. If we have had a special event or trip, then I will make another collage for that. The whole process takes about 20-25 minutes. Usually there’s a sale, so it’s not expensive. I have a 3 ring binder with page protectors ready to go. When I get my collage, I slip them in and I’m done! It doesn’t take up much space and it’s only 4x per year. Time, money, and space saver! No elaborate designs to fuss with!

Here’s another tip for organizing your digital photos, especially when your kids are little. Make a folder for each child and put copies in the folder to prepare for high school graduation slideshows and/or wedding slideshows.
When my oldest graduated from high school I had to compile photos for the yearbook etc. and while I did it I made a folder for my other child. When she graduated it was all ready done!

Having lost a hard drive before, I highly recommend having a back up drive. I have 3. I'm paranoid lol. I keep one attached to my computer, one at home away from the computer and one at work. I switch them around regularly. I aim for monthly but it doesn't always happen. I do annual photo books. I do them slowly throughout the year. Again I aim for monthly but I'm currently 6 months behind. My daughter keeps asking me when I'm going to start so this might just be my motivation 😀
Great tips Dawn. Thanks for sharing.

If photography is a hobby of yours, like it is for me, I highly recommend Photo Mechanic! Since I am very snap happy, I tend to have tons of photos on my camera, so when I upload through Photo Mechanic, I can cull photos so fast and easily, and that way I end up choosing 10 solid photos out of 80. 😅

Chatbooks lover here too! I made custom yearly ones from 2011-2016 to catch up, then switched to the subscription. So easy. We laugh a lot now though because I almost always forget to edit before it ships so we are never quite sure what we are getting into when we open a chatbook. It's actually made it more fun, though we might be missing stuff now if I forget to favorite it.

I have to go through my photos and it seems like such a daunting task because I have let it get it of control! I need a new system going forward. I think it is best to have two external hard drives that you store in different locations to be safe incase of fire or if 1 goes corrupt (which I have had happen and it wasn’t fixable). Fire boxes are not fire proof for long if you look into it. Maybe 20 mins so I feel like that is a false sense of security. Thanks for sharing your organization tips. I have some work to do! 😬😊

I just use Google photos and it stores it in the cloud. I use an Android phone and use Google for everything, so it just makes it one simple platform. Haven't run out of space, yet, but I have other cloud accts if needed. I love the chat book idea. I have a similar one I printed years ago with Snapfish of my daughter's 1st princess bday and it's still fun to flip through💕 I need to make more of those!

TOO MANY photos is total my problem! Along with too many years doing nothing with them - we’ve been married 12 years this fall and the only photos I’ve done anything with is our daughter’s first year - I take way too many as well for example we had an awesome snow day this winter and I took over 300 photos lol - I need to learn how to be more present and understand like you said just a few from and event will do - it’s overwhelming to now have to “manage” going back over the 300 and to decide what ones to keep. Something I need to get better at - once again thank you for sharing 😊

I love that idea ! Thanks for sharing about the app!! I currently use online folders on (free) OneDrive app . One ‘family’ folder per year , and a few for special occasions and just put the minimum special ones on . That way I can look through them anytime I want but there’s zero cost and zero clutter .
That way I can erase ALL of my camera roll pictures every now and them but know I still have the most special ones to look through if I want to . Or if I do want to print afew ,I’ll save them on a folder and get them printed on freeprints .

I think using Chatbooks (I just started but I'm addicted) has also helped me to - not take as many photos! Decluttering the photos DAILY has helped me realize- I usually take a lot more photos/videos than I am able to 'take care of'. Only a few each week (usually) are really special to me. I'm also much more into our family STORIES than photos, I like adding text pages into chat books.

I have been using Chatbooks for over a year now. I have it set to print the photos I put on Facebook. I love this option, as it's usually the best, most memorable pictures I take and also it includes not just the date, but whatever caption I said about the picture. So, it's more like a scrapbook. I like your idea of clearing out the phone to a hard drive. I also have 4 kids, and it seems even thought my phone holds lots of pictures, I'm always pushing the limit and need to delete some to make more room! I love the app timeshel! Every month I get 30 pics printed from my phone (I select) automatically printed and shipped to me without my having to upload or place an order. They come in a cute little heavy paper stock box on which I can write the month and year and they stay neat and organized that way until I get them in an album. It has eliminated my stress and sadness about having photo memories stuck in digital form and never getting shared or seen by others.I recommend this for every young family! I wish it existed when my kids were growing up. It’s simple- nothing complicated or difficult. Highly recommend!!

This is the rough one for me...photography is a hobby/passion of mine. I've needed to "let go" and not keep all the photos. A word about ext hard drives (love them!). They do fail; my church lost all their history when theirs fried. Wait for a sale and get 2. Back up to one and then use that one and back up to a second; it's worth it. I upload all my pics from my phone to my computer about every 2-3 weeks (and delete from my phone); then go through that when I have the time. I know too many people that had their phones die and lost ALL their pictures.

I've hooked up automatic backup with Google Photos on each of our phones under my email. I use the high quality option (instead of original quality) because it gives you unlimited storage and honestly, the quality is good enough. At the end of every season, I organize the photos... Instead of deleting the bad ones, I just save the good ones to a yearly album. No stress about losing memories if one of our phones gets stolen or lost, and adding photos to an album instead of deleting them is way faster!

    3. I too am not an 'organised' person so need simple solutions. I've used an external hard drive for years and it really works for me. When my phone memory fills up I move the whole lot across to the drive. I make a lot of online photo cards for family using Moonpig.com so its super easy to plug in the hard drive and search for what I need. Moonpig also email to remind you of birthdays which I find really useful. 👍

Yes to being present in the moment and needing far fewer pictures than you think you do to remember something! I have found that limiting the number of photos that I take from the get go is the best way to manage my library. I even set a number limit for myself to hold myself accountable, especially when I'm travelling. It also means I take higher quality photos instead of snapping a shot of everything that I see. Thanks for the chat book recommendation! Sounds like the type of thing I need in my life haha

Fun ideas with the little books! Your goal of diligence in unloading the photos seems like a great way to keep up. I've been trying to do the same. (I know it's been too long when I have to turn to kid-tech support to remind me how to download them!) Currently, I just keep them in files on my laptop (backed up with an external hard drive).
Recently, I had a couple of situations I wanted a collection of photos for. Sorting through them started as overwhelming, but eventually became kind of fun. It was a treat to see pictures I hadn't looked at in years.
Since then, I've created a file folder for each of my children (that way wedding slide shows will be much easier ;-). I've also chosen to use some of my downtime to sort photos vs. too much FB time, etc. I find it pleasant and easy to spend a few minutes here and there to categorize the photos and make them easy to locate. Then I can do more fun stuff with them, like books and gifts (and slide shows), etc.

Google photos is amazing. Super simple, auto backups to the cloud (i.e. your phone is never full), and you can search anyone's face or anything object to find a picture. It's a lifesaver and super easy to delete, organize in albums, create a shared album with family, etc. Plus, my husband's entire library is shared with me so I can always pop into his if I know he took a photo I want. We have a shared album of our kiddo with friends/family and we just add faves as we go and they can all check it out whenever they want (and comment/like) and it's all private and not on social media if that's not your thing (it's not ours). We're not insane photo takers either, but of course we still end up with tons...totally with you on enjoy the moment. Might be worth checking out :)

I do the same thing. I love it. And our google chromecast picks them up and displays them on the tv when it is idle. I love the face recognition too. My kids love to tap on their picture and flip through their lives. :) Several family members use it too so when we visit together we start an album for everyone to share to it.

I was about to recommend Chatbooks and then you said that's what you use lol We LOVE Chatbooks! Well I do. My husband is old fashioned and prefers to print them out and stick them in an album but that's way too much work for me haha. Maybe I'll check out Amazon photos for that though. And I am excited about the mini books Chatbooks is coming out with. That'll be great for kids and gifts for Grandparents when we can't afford a full-sized book or whatever.

I just did a big declutter of photos. Groupon is a good resource to find coupons if you want to digitize photos. Also the app Photoscan is great for taking photos of photos to make them digital. Pic Scanner gold is good for Apple. I make calendars on Shutterfly every year and I find it is so good to simplify the year into just a few photos for every month.

You are getting closer and closer to 100K :) I have so many photos and they are sp unorganized in my computer. I love the yearbook idea. The external hard drive is great, because in the event of a fire, you grab it and go. Genius!

I love Chatbooks and I do make a “Year Book” each year with it! It’s super simple and easy and you can add dates and location and captions if you want. You can also upgrade to a nice, hardcover book if you want. Mine are usually about 200 photos for the year and only about $100.

I use a reminder app to remind me once a week to purge pics on my phone and right away upload to shutterly what might be in this year's book. I'm gramma - I do a annual shutterfly book for the whole family - mostly from all the family whattsapp. Make the book - order 5 copies - my Santa shopping is done :-)

If you want to print photos, you can install the Shutterfly app to your phone and you can order unlimited 4x6 prints (or 4x4, I believe), have them printed for free, and just pay shipping. They also make little books like Chatbooks, though I think you pick the photos to go into them, but it's pretty simple since it's so small.

Chatbooks! I’ve been using them for about a year. I love it! I feel like the photos are actually being utilized and not just taking up storage on my phone.
As far as the cost. Thinking back to the days of film. If you wanted to buy a roll of film and develop it, it would be around $20 today. Chatbooks by comparison is pretty reasonable.

I have a plastic multi pocket thing for the wall in my sons’ bedrooms. Very few months I print photos and then they choose which ones to replace. It can also hold postcards and cards. They are still little so they love seeing themselves and different family members and friends.

I'm going to check out chatbooks! If I know that every time I've taken 60 pictures that it's going to automatically design me a book, it might help me realize how many I take and hopefully I'll get rid of any that I wouldn't want in a book right away so I wouldn't have to edit them out! Thank you for the videos!

    Hi Dawn,
Ok we are in that boat with new grandkids and photos coming to us quickly that we want to save..somewhere. I like the idea of the external hard drive you mentioned but....can you load them without having to upload everything to a computer first?? Will this thing connect directly to your phone of iPad? I'm guessing not??!! Thanks for all your help.

You inspired me to create and order a printed album of digital photos featuring my two young granddaughters, who are sisters in elementary and middle school. The first pick was 200 photos, then I narrowed down to 100, but the album still would have been a lot of money. I divided those in half, breaking at a point where they were becoming young ladies. I ordered a Shutterfly album of the more recent half, which I'm calling Volume 2. I plan to order Volume 1, the younger part of their lives, in the near future.
I love your idea to leave photos the way they are, printed or digital, and not feeling pressured to scan printed photos or print digital ones. There are exceptions, of course, but what a burden lifted!

Great tips! Chatbooks are my favorite too. I just can’t keep up with them even now. Too many pictures...🥴
Also, hard drives WILL fail. Not a matter of “if” but “when”. And it can cost upwards of $1k to retrieve data from them. Ask me how I know. So I would suggest at least a copy of your main photo hard drive stored elsewhere (like at a relative’s house).

Thank you!! I have been dying for you to talk about photos! I love your thoughts. My husband and I store our photos on a hard drive (on Apple Photos) and it all goes in date order which I love. Trying to get better at going through photos on our phones BEFORE putting them onto the hard drive!
One of my personal goals for this year was to create photobooks for 2017 and 2018. In the last month I have just started. I’m using Snapfish because their quality is great and prices are good (plus regular amazing deals too!).
It’s funny, though. I had already gone through these photos from 1-2 years ago, deleted bad ones, duplicates, cut down a lot, etc.... but in the process of creating photobooks I’ve gone back another1 or 2 times and have ebded up deleting MORE and really cut down so much more. Because as the months and years go by, I’ve gained more perspective like you said at the end; of one event I don’t need 20 photos! Evengoing by dates - do I really need 3 photos of my toddler on the very same day?! Don’t think so!
    Thank you for sharing!!

Vacations photos are the hardest for me to scale down. I just took a Disney trip in December. I ended up making a 60 page photobook with all our Disney memories. I can’t imagine how i would be able to choose just 3 or 4 pics to put in a year book. Some events you want to keep a lot of photos for so I like making special photobook’s that are just geared to that one event so we can include all the memories we want to remember about that trip and then I always back them up onto a flash drive in case I want to print one in the future.

I know I would like to keep in mind the idea that I read somewhere, when you take digital photos, imagine that you’re back to the old 35 mm film camera days. You could only take 25 maybe 30 photos per roll of film so it was a nice way to think about what pictures are really worth taking and which ones wouldn’t be worth it. Because we used to have to wait until they were developed to even find out if they were any good and still pay for the print. So there are some things that are old methods but are still useful.

I use a combination of cloud and external driver... I upload and keep sync then at the end of the year or begining of the next I download that ending year photos into the external. So currently I only have 2019 photos. Then when they are in the external drive I divide into albums with one called At Home for random photos at home or not and then by event. Iuse that time to purge. My problem is that since 10 years ago I havent made an album and I want to get back at it. I USED to make year photo album, so that might be my option. But chatbooks sounds like a great idea...

Great video, we used a external drive and we can not get it to work, so we need to see if we can get someone to get them off for us. My dh just got a photo stick a few months ago, it stores and collects all photos from your computer, and it has it where duplicates won't show up. I have not tried it myself. Not really computer savy.lol I lov ethe littel books and will try them soon. I'm like you in thef act I don't have time to design a book. I do need to go thur and spend some time on deleting ones I only need for a short time and don't need to store. Great video, wish it had been longer. As for now, phone is up loaded and stored on photo stick. Always looking for a better way. An I love printed photos.

As a professional photographer, it's very hard for me to not take a lot of photos of my family! It's even harder to delete them! Lol....I have my iPhone automatically back my photos up to 3 different places - Google Photos, Amazon Prime Photos and Flickr. I try to get into Google Photos and make albums of certain events so that if I ever do want to actually print one, they are already in an album. I gave my married daughter a subscription to Chatbooks for a year for her birthday because she takes a lot of pictures too. She really appreciated this gift!

We have a similar system for our digital photos & home videos in which we use a external hard drive for storage & I try to make it a monthly thing to download photos & videos from our camera & phones. I want to create photo books as well but there is no such service here in our country for that. Any idea on other services that can take international order please let me know. Thanks for this video & love from the Solomon Islands. 😍
