  • How to grill.
    For safety reasons, please move your grill away from the house further than I have it.
    I cover a lot of the basics in this video, so it is a little long.
    How to attach a propane tank
    How to start a propane grill.
    How to start a charcoal grill.
    Here is a link to the Charcoal starter - amzn.to/3hyJbbJ
    I refer to the Montreal Steak Seasoning as "Sauce" a couple of times...oops.:0)
    Here is my Amazon Affiliate Link;

    If you want to help support my mission of encouraging and empowering people,
    please visit my Amazon store. When you buy things from my store that you would normally
    purchase through Amazon anyway, a small percentage goes to support my cause.
    I have also included items that I can feel good about recommending.

    Couple things you should emphasize: 1) MAKE SURE THE NOZZLE ON THE PROPANE TANK IS SET TO CLOSED WHEN YOU ARE REPLACING TANKS (you said it, but too brief!). 2) MAKE SURE LID IS OPEN WHEN TURNING ON PROPANE AND SPARKING THE BURNERS (otherwise it goes boom).

      I don't know if he will cover it in the video, but something I find that people don't suggest often enough is just a really, really good knife and an axe. I am not a knife guy, I do not carry knives on me normally, but when camping I do. Just get a solid knife off Amazon, don't spend more than fifty bucks. Axe is for firewood, trust me when I say you will wish you had one if you forget it simply because its easier for firewood.
      However knives:
      - Quick and easy kindling scrap with bark and wood shavings. One person just quickly scrapes/whittles away wood for a minute or two while the other gets some sticks. Pair with a few Doritoes and guaranteed fire. I am not joking Doritoes make great kindling because of the dense chip, light dust, and fat content helps the wood considerably.
      - Use knife, clothespins/binderclips, string to make a clothesline between branches or trees. We can hang up our wet clothes in the sun and not on a rock. Easy.
      - You can also use string, your knife, and a tarp to make shaded areas by tying between trees. You can also do it to help deflect breezes, or extend cover past a tent. This again takes up little storage room and can really help improve a trip.
      - You learn how to comfortably hold a knife and gain confidence, this can be a plus for many as knife handling is a skill.
      - Learn to carve and whittle! I still have my hiking stick from three years ago and it is covered in cross patterns, carvings and burns. It looks like a seventh grade kid made it but I love it. Your ancestors did it with pride, you can too.
      - Eating. You know, and I know, and EVERYONE KNOWS that plastic knives S U C K (so does any non-metal alternative). This is 75% of why you bring a knife and it just makes everything better. Plus now you don't have to buy or use plastic knives, which is good because single-use waste is one of the most environmentally damaging problems of camping trips apart from fires.
      Please do bring your own metal/reusable utensils and plates. This will greatly reduce garbage on the site, and please don't burn plastic waste. You can burn food scraps that's fine. If you run low on soap for utensils, you can literally boil them in water and they will be fine.

    Another good video sir!!!.... Quick tip I want to add, for all the kids out there who might be a little worried about connecting the propane tank on the grill...
    Propane grills in good condition are REALLY safe as long as you follow the instructions, but, if you want to make EXTRA sure that your connection isn't leaking, all you have to do is gently mix up some dish soap and warm water (be gentle so you get as few bubbles as possible), and after you hook everything up, but before you turn on the grill, pour some of that soapy water on the connections and give it a minute.... There shouldn't be any new bubbles... Then turn the gas on JUST a little bit and watch the connection (this will take less then 20 seconds) If you don't see any new bubbles forming everything has a good seal. Turn the gas back off, and leave the grill cover open for a minute or two to let that propane you let out dissipate a bit, while you use a paper towel and dry up the soapy water, and then you can confidently start your grill knowing everything's connected with no leaks.
    You only need to do this when changing out the tanks, and especially for new gas grills it's probably not necessary, BUT if you want a little EXTRA peace of mind about it, there it is.

    13:08: "I'm going to get my other grill." Might be the daddest of all dad things ever said by a dad, thank you! Close seconds are "not this drill, we need the OTHER drill", and "that's a framing hammer, not a finish hammer." We need more people like you in the world!

    What I love about Dad is that he doesn't talk down to us, and includes seemingly unimportant details... like, let the links cool off and then put them in a plastic bag and into the freezer. Some kids want to make sure they do everything right and don't mess up, and these little things matter. It's like he's talking to his 14 year old kid who just hasn't done whatever it is before. Thanks Dad!

  • @carol629
    @carol629 4 года назад +12

    Thank you so much for this. My own dad died when I was 6 and my mom never remarried so I've never really had a father figure to learn these things from. I'm a full grown adult now and doing just fine but there are still somethings I've been nervous about and one of them was grilling. I was without electricity for two weeks after hurricane Irma (lots had it worse so that's not a complaint). And, although I had a charcoal grill and plenty of charcoal to use, it was so unbearably hot out I couldn't work up the energy to start the fire. So, went without boiled water or a cooked meal for those two weeks (again not a complaint at all, I know how lucky I am it was only two weeks). Soon after though, I bought a gas grill so I would not be in the same situation again in the future. But, I had it for almost a year before I worked up the nerve to use it the first time as I was terrified of the propane. I watched so many videos but none of them included the info you have here about connecting the tank and turning it on. Such a simple step but if it's not something you've done before or seen done, it can be nerve wrecking! Thank you!!!

    dad, can you show us how to pick the best air filters for our home + how/when to change them out?

    • @Gecko4nine
      @Gecko4nine 4 года назад +5

      Just another subscriber to him, but from experience buy cheaper air filters, change them every 2-3 months. Never buy the expensive ones. They are made to filter out a lot of contaminants but they make the furnace work a lot harder to heat your home. Same with cooling your home with the fan and A/C unit. The air flow is constricted, so its better to get the cheaper air filter and keep up to date on when its time to replace the filter.

    • @AllFormsElectronic
      @AllFormsElectronic 4 года назад

      The sizing should be in the current air filter. That’s the only way to tell the size, as all air filters are different per house. It’s based off three dimensions (A x B x C) write that sizing down, and when you go to get a new one have an attendant show you the exact one based on the measurements you took from your original filter! As for quality? There like $10-$15 give or take. You can’t go wring with any of them, but some might be over kill, and depending on the health of the people living in your home, compromising in the middle dollar range is totally reasonable.

    • @linsaa
      @linsaa 4 года назад +1

    Thanks for another how to video Dad! Loved the tip of pre-boiling the bratwurst in beer and even freezing them for later, definitely going to try that.That wooden paddle thingy is on my list of must have, we are still using that horrible wire brush. I'd like to return a tip for the steaks. Don't put cold meat on the grill (meat will stick to a hot grill if the steaks are too cold), a bit of olive oil and salt and pepper first on each side, grill each side once then slather your butter and Montreal Steak spice on. Once you put the steak on the grill don't move it, if the steak isn't cooked enough before you move it you'll tear the muscle fibers and juices will leak out. Always let meat rest first so that the first cut doesn't release all the tasty juices.
    Hope all is well and keep making great videos!

    • @DamienDarksideBlog
      @DamienDarksideBlog 4 года назад +3

      What Dads don't tell you is that it's to test the tension in the tongs. They don't even know that's why they do it, it becomes such a learned behaviors. However you KNOW when a Dad knows his tongs are "acting up" just by the look of his face when his "click-click"s the tongs. Plus it's so you don't explode a sausage by gripping the damn thing so tight.
      Basically the Tong Test is checking to see if the tongs suck, and you won't know until you try or see your Dad try.
      also its fun
